It’s because that’s usually the black people they see and how they imagine them same reason we usually have a fucked up fade, a flat top or cornrows or dreads, or just bald, these are not people who normally hang around black people so they are used to one look, so I don’t expect Final Fantasy to ever come out with a black character as good as Cloud Strife if he is black he is most likely gonna resemble Barret, the strong black main character is usually a Jax looking character so no matter what happens until someone discovers the other cosmetics, Black characters aren’t gonna be received as well as the next generic White Military personality with a man bun and look or Shonen Main character

We've seen what artists branching out looks like. Stick to the hair and don't get any ideas. Artists are the ones lazily slapping the same hair on every character and all to appease a portion of the community that only cares about optics.

As an artist it’s pretty clear why this hairstyle is so common, constructing it is pretty similar to drawing straight/wavy hair. This is why artists who do character design should draw from all sorts of backgrounds, of course including black people
I agree on the sentiment that it’s similar to straight/wavy hair in that same style and is probably one of the reasons its so trendy. But i just need them to recognize that for other straight and wavy hairstyles, locs can just as easily be modeled from the silhouette of a white hairstyle, like a pony tail with bangs, you get what im saying?
@@Toonariithat’s what I been thinking for years💀they could dead ass do dread mullets and so many more hairstyles that aren’t locs but they settle for the most generic shit
Also an artist, but I'm a bit confused by this reasoning. This overused style is essentially a comb-over hawk made of dreads. Why not use those same dreads for literally any other style? And fun thing about dreads, you can vary their size and shape however which way, so you can make them more or less complicated easily. For any other artists reading this and interested to learn more, here's some advice: To start you off in your search of hairstyles for both black men and women, know that about any hairstyle can be done by black people. Just think a chunkier version of styles you see anyone else wear, along with styles more unique to black hair. The following are some terms you can look into, each have many variations! Afro, afro puffs, fro hawk, faux hawk, wash-and-go, pineapple, high top, fade, waves, jerry curl, braids, box braids, twists, corn rows, dread locs, sister locs, bantu knots, and a combination of all the above. It's very common to see a combination of these styles on one head in the black community (for instance, I tend to wear twists or flat twists, with a fro or a bun made out of more twists), basic every day styles yet you never see these in mainstream media. Games always default to 2-4 styles at most, and it's just so uninspiringly boring! Happy to see a tad more variety here and there, but we still have a long way to go!
Want to add, I believe the actual main reason this style is popular in games now is because these games were in development since Black Panther came out in 2017. Killmonger rocked it and all the development teams or higher ups decided to include it in their games... Despite the style not matching the personalities to most of these men. People don't care to do research on what else people actually wear is the sad truth, they just jump on what's "trending" from a single source. Even though of all the people I personally know, and all the hundreds of UA-camrs I've watched since then, only one of them is currently wearing this style. I've seen a few other men who also have dreads with shaved sides, but none of them wear it swept to the side in their face like this.
Still, if its thats similar its weird they just use the exact same position and shape and not just vary it a bit and adding other details like those other types of hairs?
This aint a video about hair, its a whole discussion of how out of touch the silicon valley types don't know what they are doing or think they know what they are doing.

As a 3d artist who wants to go into game design, these videos are both really funny but also kinda sad, lol. I really hope my generation can bring more hair diversity into the genre cause at this point it’s the bare minimum!!
And as a 3d artist who's been in game design this will only be decided based on trends, the topic of hairstyles never comes up as important, the focus is mostly on the how interactive the physics are and reacts so the less diversity they have the more they can focus on making a few generics look realistic. If you do modeling this will be one of the least worked on areas, and if you're using simulation for hair then those have its limits too. I hope you find a job with indie devs then you'll have more creative input especially if you're looking to change shit up, this can also eventually push you to be a creative director or lead modeling artist
Personally I think the big thick dreads are super underrated. We need more characters in film and games to rock those because it's such a striking silhouette. The Haitians from Bad Boys 2 and Ronin from Stargate Atlantis are very memorable for exactly that reason.
Look, I'm not Black, but I am Brazilian, I lived among a lot of black people, studied with them, moved to a bunch of different places with a lot black people. Why am I saying this? I won't say the hairstyles BG3 had were bad, but I don't consider them good enough to the point of praise. There was only like 3-4 black hairstyles and they were pretty generic at that. Though, I do appreciate the inclusion of the perm-fro. Wish they had even more variations on dreadlocks specifically.
i'm not dogging the game but bg3 really doesn't have much in the way of black hairstyles, bro. that game has way more generic caucasian irl npc fuckboi hairstyles than black ones.
BG3 kind of fell flat with hairstyles in general. A lot of them don't even work on some races because of clipping with the ears. By races I mean fantasy races in case that wasn't obvious.
I can 100% understand the frustration with this even though I'm not black. Even from just a character design point, it's lazy and shows absolutely no effort in branching out and doing research for PLENTY of other black hairstyles you could put on a video game / cartoon character. I genuinely wonder why they're sticking to this specific hairstyle in particular? Is it easier to draw and texturize when rendering a 3D model? No clue. On another note your editing makes me laugh so hard. I can feel how fed up you are and I love it 😂 Ever since your last video on this subject it's like they heard you and gave you the middle finger.

@tyon4187 I think mainly because there's a high percentage of us playing the game. I think many of these other game developers, if we're being honest, either don't really care about Black folk in their games or don't really think they get a high enough percentage of us playing them. I think they really half-ass it when it comes to Black folk and just throw in some locs or an Afro and think "there you go, some Black hairstyles." They don't realize there is a significant portion of Black people playing their games, and they just do some very lazy research about Black hairstyles. All they need to do have a quick call, email, or text to the 2K people and it could remedy that. Many of these game developers don't really understand how important a hairstyle is to people.
@dionis6602 just because it may not be important for you, doesn't mean it isn't for someone else. For many Black folk, in case you didn't already know from many of the comments from this video, hairstyles are an important part of their identity.

For any other artists reading this and interested to learn more, here's some advice:
To start you off in your search of hairstyles for both black men and women, know that about any hairstyle can be done by black people.
The dyed/frosted tips pushes it over the edge for me.
The Tekken example is very true.

And as a 3d artist who's been in game design this will only be decided based on trends, the topic of hairstyles never comes up as important, the focus is mostly on the how interactive the physics are and reacts so the less diversity they have the more they can focus on making a few generics look realistic.

It's actually always refreshing to see videos like "this is what I wanna see" which is something I always enjoy about this (now three episode long) video series.
arcane is the only piece of media that has like 3 of the character haircut archetypes and does them all really well
I've been playing Palia and lowkey I've been absolutely vibin the hair in it. You got braid space buns with the braid bangs WITH baby hairs. Classic fade but 3 different hairlines. Curly, kinky space buns with long flowing curls (my fav). Braids into a high knot with leave out. The comb over Kilmonger dreads. Clean dreads low pony. The short bob marley dreads wild and free. Curly, Kinky afro (not just round blob). For the Muslims out there they have a hijab as well. Plus all your straight hair/wavy variety. But honestly, the baby hairs really impressed me. Like someone did their research! 👏
People need to give this guy credit who made this video It just randomly popped up in my video list Do you know how much editing he had to do in that 10-minute clip alone if he's doing this by himself lol it's maddening. Great video man. Hell editing is what made me stop doing videos. So tedious😂
