why was Zerga needed on the team? Yen could have had the explosives on him instead of having Zerga bring them into the vault in a briefcase. It seems to me they could have eliminated the need for Mr. Zerga.
i thought of that too - Zerga faked a heart attack when Linus was walking around the hallways & was spotted by security, but Livingston Dell had control of the monitors so a diversion by Zerga wasn't necessary.
it was a backup which they clearly needed as he wasnt able to switch feature in time. plus Zerga, Ocean and Linus kept him occupied and distracted whole evening. as Linus told before "man is a machine"
i disagree with your explanation on both points - but if so where were the backups for all other positions? there were none. So the backup theory fails. Plus there was no reason to keep him occupied - their plan would work fine. Bottom line is Zerga wasn't needed.
They needed Saul-as-Zerga a) to get Yen into the vault under the disguise of a rich man gaining favor with Terry (remember he promised Terry doing this favor would be repaid unto him) and b) the heart attack diversion to get guards to not look at the cameras when Livingston switched the footage (remember the control room guards had actually spotted Linus right before the "heart attack")
R.I.P Carl Reiner!
Insurance for one, security another, but most of all; I just don't trust you.
