  • BATMAN: 1989. Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Tim Burton! Often overlooked after Batman Returns weirded everyone out and Batman and Robin made everyone sick, the original 1989 BATMAN movie was less a summer film and more of a massive culture shaking event. 1989 Batmania would have aftershocks well into the 1990s, paving the way for the mainstream image, followed up by the Animated Series, of the Dark Knight. Moody, dark, more like a classic horror movie than the pop art 60s TV show, BATMAN set the tone And provided the template for all the “serious” comic book and super hero movies that followed. And for those of us just becoming aware of the wider world, those 80s and 90s kids who grew up in the BATMAN era, the caped crusader was a daily companion through the TOYS !
From Toy Biz’s original wave of BATMAN movie figures and DC super heroes in summer of 89, to the Kenner Dark Knight Collection that changed the way toy lines were marketed for the next decade, the various plastic Batmobile, Batwing, Batcycles, and Batsuits were staples of the toy box and status symbols among playmates for an entire generation of kids. From water-squirting joker and rope-belt Batman to the multicolor bat variants that packed the shelves of every toy store in the nation and across the world, BATMAN was everywhere. And although he gets short shrift and only meager mention from bloggers, reviewers, and has heretofore been left out of the toys that made us, Batman was every inch the phenomenon that the contemporaneous ninja turtles were or that later kids would find with power rangers and the like. So...
On today's episode of Randomland... Come with me into my own bat cave as I’m finally fulfilling a long series of promises over the years to show you my humble 1989 Batman collection!
And by the way, if you have 1989-1992 Bat items you want to “dispose of” I’m all bat ears 😂 and side note, if you know anyone who worked on these toy lines at Kenner or Toy Biz let me know. I’ve been dying to ask questions for years, and looking for the archived box art for years too! Wouldn’t that be something... a whole room full of replica bat boxes ...

I was born in 81, so in 89 when this was released, I was just about to turn 8 and we went to go see it. I was so excited, it was on a Sunday and I had school the next day. So being out late on Sunday was something that never happened. I was still playing with the Kenner super powers toys. So untill I got the updated figures I played out the movie with my blue and grey batman, my joker and my blue batmobile. Then a couple of months later I got some of the toybiz figures for my birthday. On Halloween I went as Batman in my very awesome homemade costume. Then come that Christmas I got some ninja turtle stuff, the batmobile and the batwing. And lastly in the stocking was the Batman VHS! I bet I watched that movie 5 times that day.
Thank you for sharing your story and sparking my memory.

Same here! July of 81 so for my 8th bday I saw Batman with my dad who was a pastor. I remember him telling me not to say that when joker called him a gruesome son of a bitch. 🤣

Anton Furst (Production Designer) deserved the Oscar for Batman. The car and Batwing were just amazing in design. The car in the film seemed as if it had a life of its own

This was great! I was a young mom at that time and hunted down those action figures with equal tenacity. You just brought back all these fun “I was a mom in the late ‘80s and ‘90s” memories, so thanks!!!! I honestly think I had just as much fun raising kids in the ‘90s as my kids had being raised in the ‘90s!

I never comment on UA-cam videos but this is one of the best I’ve ever seen. I was born in 1983 too and my dad finally let me watch this in 1992 before Returns came out when I was out of school with a broken arm. Great memories and what a nostalgia trip. Thanks man!

We're almost the same age and for me was the same, my parents weren't rich and I never had all the Masters, Ghostbusters, Ninja Turtles or complete collections and I always had to choose one or two 😅 When I had to choose a Batman toy from the 1989 movie toys I chose Bruce Wayne that can turn into Batman! That was cool! Never had the Batmobile but in return my parents bought me an Ecto 1!✌🏻

Batman 1989 is the greatest film ever made; I love every second of this movie. I've been obsessed with it since 1990. I love everything and Michael Keaton became a god to me, just like Robert Englund when he portrayed Freddy Krueger

I was 8 or 9 when this came out and let me tell you, the marketing for this movie was next level. I had a significant amount of the trading cards, making-of magazines, Batdance was on the radio in constant rotation, the NES game was blowing up. I never saw any of the toys but fuck me I was hyped for the movie, I already knew almost everything about It. We only had a dilapidated old drive in theatre, and it re-opened and closed again within the perfect window to show Batman at its release (the last movie it showed was Return of the Jedi, for which the poster was up on the ‘Now Showing’ board for most of my childhood). My mum sent me with one of her younger co-workers (who also introduced me to Bill & Ted), we watched it on a massive screen with the sound coming through the car’s FM radio. What an experience.

I still remember the night my parents surprised me with the ToyBiz Batman play set. They didn't have a lot of money, but they knew that I loved Batman and was absolutely gutted that I was too young to see it in the theaters. I've been gifted a lot of cool stuff in my life, but I think that still takes the cake as the best present/surprise I've ever gotten. Thanks for this trip back to the 80s, Justin.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Back to the Future 3, Dead Poets Society, Do the Right Thing and of course the long awaited Batman!!!! Saw it opening day at the 11:30am showing Friday morning!!! Ended up seeing it in the theater about 3 times. Still one of the best Batman films.

When I was a 7 year old kid in 2009, I saw a shelf named "20 years of Batman 1989" And then I bought that movie and saw it at home on TV and instantly became a huge fan of Keaton's Batman!

89 was like the best year ever all the greatest movies came out then. I still remember seeing an exclusive preview for Batman 6 months before it came out in June on Entertainment Tonight. The Excitement was loaded and I just couldn't wait Batman was explosive and massive when it came out you could feel it peaking months before. Toys were sold out and you had to wait for an action figure when I finally got mine I got 2. I still have my Batmobile, my Michael Keaton Batman and Joker all from 89. Love the toy catalogs.

WOW I love this video so much......I was an 8 year old kid when this glorious piece of film/comic history came out, so the massive amount of everything Batman during this time period was just an amazing time to be alive!! Like you said, I knew Batman mostly from reruns of the the Adam West show, as well as the Super Friends cartoon and subsequent Super Powers figure. This took my kind of passive interest in Batman to an entire other stratosphere of fandom!! So cool to see stuff like the catalogs/magazines and whatnot that I always saw references to, but never actually owned. I still have all my old '89-'90 Batman toys, and I was fortunate to have they entire ToyBiz collection, as well as a large chunk of the Kenner Dark Knight Collection growing up. Sooooo many memories of not only playing with those figures with my friends, but the hunt to find all that stuff in stores!! I remember that looooong search for the actual Batman ToyBiz figure, that was pretty much non-existent in any store in the bay area. My best friend went on vacation and somehow found a store with them somehow in stock, and his parents bought one for both of us....THAT was up and above the call of our friendship!! hahaha..........anyways man, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I think I'm gonna dig out all my '89 Batman related stuff.......

    Nice collection my friend.

I turned six in January, 1989. My dad took me to see Batman a little late in it's release. We might have even went to the dollar show to see it. He was lenient on letting me see it. It wasn't even an issue. I remember a friend telling me his mom won't let him see it. I just remember saying to him, "But it's Batman." I saw no reason for his mother to not let him see it. I couldn't wrap my head around that. It's not like it's Nightmare on Elm Street.
My dad took me to see Terminator 2: Judgement Day at the cinema.
There was a comic book adaptation of the 1989 movie that I remember seeing for sale at the movie theater. I wanted it, but my dad didn't buy it for me that day. I eventually did get it at a comic book store. I wonder if this guy has it. He'd probably like the recent continuation of the Burton-verse in the comics. They've continued where Burton left off, ignoring the Schumacher movies.
My mother took me to the comic book store for the first time in 1987 when I was four. I was collecting before I could even read. Comic books helped me learn to read before anyone else in kindergarten because I wanted to read my collection so badly. I learned to take good care of my comics and keep them in bags. I take good care of all my belongings because I learned to take care at an early age. I've loved Batman since I can remember, before the 1989 movie. There was nothing gonna stop me from seeing Batman, and there was nothing worse in it than what I already saw in the comics.
My comic books were stolen from me in 1995 when I was twelve. It crushed me. I haven't collected the same way since. I collect things still, but now I let go of it and sell my material possessions as soon as they become too prominent in my life. It's like a reflex now. Just let it go when it becomes too sentimental. It's healthy for the spirit. Not having attachments will spare me the pain of someone stealing it.

Love this! I was born in 93 but Batman was and always has been my favorite superhero so I ended up with a lot of these toys growing up. Now that I’m collecting them again, I really wish I would’ve never gotten rid of mine 😅

I really enjoyed your story and experience...it was a magical time for movies and toys. I had just graduated from College when this movie came out but I loved ALL of the hype surrounding this movie...loved the toys too which must have inspired my huge collection that would come later. The franchise was so cool. Thanks for sharing....such a cool video bc you clearly had caught the bug like many of us did at the time. I’m still obsessed. Thanks again!!!

I was fortunate enough to be visiting my grandmother the summer Batman came out. My aunt felt sorry for me (only boy in a family of girls) and took me to the movie theater to see the movie. I think I was around 8. Movies then were a super special thing for me because I lived in the country, and had 3 channels on TV, the movie theater was 45 minutes away, and my parents were not rich. Anyways, after seeing the movie, my aunt took me to the toy store in the mall, and got me a Hotwheels batmobile. It was my prized possession for years, and I still have it to this day, though like 90% of the paint has flaked off because I played the shit out of that thing. That christmas I got the ERTL micro machine Batman cars, which was batmobile, batwing, and joker van. Lost those over the years, and re-purchased them a few years ago. They currently reside on my wall, next to a signed by Stan Lee poster of Spider man amazing fantasy. I love the Keaton batman. It has its corn and cheese, but it was well done and was above all, entertaining. It didnt go too gritty, and didnt take itself too lightly. I think it was the right amount of source material and edge. Is it the best ever? Hell no. But you can watch it today and enjoy the hell out of it, and the flaws in the movie do not hurt its watch-ability one bit.

Wow! Nostalgic feels. as you went through I went down a checklist of what I had. Batman, the bat wing, the posters, the cereal, the books, the frisbee, the magazines... and yes, the Holo shirt

Such a great upload and brought back so many memories from my own childhood. I was 8 years old and visiting my grandparents in NYC when the film hit theaters. I remember the Batman logo and Joker imagery being everywhere I went. I distinctively remember my parents ordering me a Batman figure and driving me up to Toys “R” Us to pick it up when it came in. Also remember driving up to Blockbuster with my dad and picking up a VHS copy of Batman which they had also pre-ordered. I visited my grandparents the summer of 1990 and instead of Batman, it was Warren Beatty‘s Dick Tracy that was everywhere!

Yep, I was a college student that year and was working at Sam Goody/Musicland in our mall. I totally remember the front window of our store being filled with the Batman signage, t-shirts, merch, and all the CASSETTES!!!

I was a teenager when Batman 89 premiered and at first I was not OK with the change to his suit being all black but I eventually got over it. I saw it in the theater opening night and the crowd was so pumped...they laughed at every joke and cheered and clapped too. I saw it two other times in the theater but the energy of opening night was never matched again for me.

Your video made my day! I was born in 82 and saw 89 Batman on summer vacation in Oregon, at old Egyptian theater. when I was obviously seven. When we got the VHS I watched it every day on summer vacation. A friend of mine gave me a model that he built of the Batmobile. I played with that thing even though you’re not supposed to LOL. To this day (just turned 38… ) I still have 89 Batman dreams sometimes… Sadistic joker type stuff… I’m pretty sure I can quote the entire movie. Favorite movie ever. Kind of feel like I was raised by those characters LOL
Course Batman returns was dark too and scary. The clowns, for a 10 year old. My mom dropped me off by myself to see that one in our small town in California. Lodi.

Lol. I went thru this with all three of my kids from Batman, Ninja turtles, Would-not-die Transformers, on and on for what seemed years. Every new movie or cartoon, it was crazy. Then came video games and we as parents were punished ruthlessly. Remember the overnight lines. We were not rich but we managed to weather the storm. I hated and loved every minute. Even now over thirty year old kids still plan occasional sneak attacks. Have you heard about memberships? By the way I bought the Batman cereal, lol, pissed them off seriously. Also, my kids liked Keaton better in Beetlejuice. But taking them to see Batman 89 was electrifying. It was great. They were wild eyed and electrified and I fell asleep when Prince came on. Thanks for sharing your fabulous memories!

That’s a pretty awesome Batman collection Justin and it’s funny how my parents wouldn’t let me watch that movie too. It’s crazy that you posted this video during DC Fandome which is crazy also that Keaton Batman is coming back on the big screen.
