Great video! This vid brings to light a lesson I learned the hard way.; remove the filler plug before the drain plug. If you remove the drain and can't get the filler out, you're screwed!
As usual Peter, you do such first class thorough inspection and work. We definitely learn all the important things from you to care for our Toyota's so we have great reliability and longevity. 🚙😁
Another great video, Peter! I have a ‘99 Tacoma 4WD and have rebuilt the entire suspension front to back and replaced the fluids in the front and rear diffs and transfer case. And I didn’t even know there was a rear diff vent until now!!! Headed out to the garage to check it now. Thank you! Keep them coming. I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. Update: Yep, it was stuck. Those breather caps are soft metal. If you use more than a metal brush and your hand, go easy on it, they break free pretty easily.
ALL those fluids need to go - NOW! Your analysis is very thorough and quite correct, in my opinion. It is a joy to watch you work - you are always so cheerful and also have a great sense of humor. Looking forward to more videos on this truck, hopefully.
Thank you for this video. I changed the rear diff oil two weeks ago. And have been seeing people talking about the breathing vent. So I took mine off and there was a poof when I unscrewed it telling me there was pressure in there. I ordered one and it’s coming. But I worked the old one over and got it cleaned up and free working so I put it back till my new one comes in. Once again thank you. Your videos are top notch.
Thanks for that reminder! My 2003 Tacoma has 191,000 miles on it and I did change the rear diff oil (2wd) about a 100,000 miles ago but never checked the vent. My truck is a daily driver on the streets.
Very interesting vlog Peter I never knew about a vent/breather valve I have a Nissan nv200 and you have given me the confidence in renewing my transmission oil after watching your vlogs many thanks and take care regards Mark from billericay in the Uk 🇬🇧👍👍
you are inspiring, I always use to let the circumstances take over and have a dirty work area. My retort was this is construction, but you have inspired me to go in a new direction. you work on dirty cars, yet you maintain a clean work area. Thank you sir for changing my point of view!!
2004 Tacoma zero maintenance, not a spot of rust on it. Here in Michigan they only look like this until their first January if you don't undercoat them and profusely monitor them.
@@jimknowlton342 As a Canadian, I am absolutely confounded by the fact most people do NOTHING to prevent their vehicle from rusting despite the fact our roads are salted 4-5 months per year. Back in 2005 my car was built in the same factory as this Tacoma . It just got its 16th annual Krown application and has no rust. Refusing to rustproof in the international Salt Belt is as destructive as refusing to change the oil.
@@jimknowlton342 I hate to steal your thunder, but Michigan is not the only place to have the honor of ruining the underbodies of motor vehicles. Personally, I would be quite content not seeing snow again for the rest of my life.)
Update: Checked my vent valve and it was stuck closed with just minimal dirt on it! Replaced the gear oil and what a difference! At first I thought my tires were low on air but they where right at the correct pressure. The drive is much smoother!
Laughs in 3rd gen 4runner in the northeast. That's not rust by a long shot. We have been conditioned to spray penetrating oil on anything at least 24 hrs before working on it.
Peter, you are a sauerkraut eating super-hero ..... I wish you were close so I could entrust you to service my Tundra .... keep up the honest work and thanks for the videos ....
Wouldn’t it be wise to completely remove the vent to be sure it isn’t plugged internally? Vent for front dif’ is harder to find; might be good if you could show us how to find it.
Many, many people don't do any maintenance on any car or truck, "it's running, why would I need to do anything?" Or "it will be too much money!" Or "I need my truck I can't have it tied up in a shop" there's a long list of excuses, and many times it's just ignorance. Most cars and trucks rarely get anything more than gas in the tank and a quart of oil when the oil light comes on.
My dad drives an 04 sierra with the 5.3L V8. He changes the oil every 3000 miles and... That's where the maintenance starts and stops. It has 180k miles and a lifter tick, battery drain, rust everywhere and anywhere, nuked suspension, bald tires, and no brakes. That's not how that poor truck was when he bought it 100k miles ago.
This video gave me nightmares. I went and replaced both diff vents on my 2020 4Runner w/13,000 miles. Then to be extra safe, I relocated both to the top of my CB antennae.
YES! I have a lexus GS sedan, which is a Sedan with Toyota truck parts, and my front rear breather was clogged, I had a leak from a seal. I cleaned it and it stopped.
My tocoma will go into 4 wheel drive but to take it out I have to shut the truck off turn the switch off then whenI turn it back on it disengages, any idea what it could be?
I just changed the transfer case and rear diff fluid in my 2012 rav4 with synthetic 75W-90 and I am getting a smell of burning gear oil inside the cabin after the vehicle heats up, but not outside of it. I rechecked the level and it seemed low and I added more oil until it began running out. Ran the vehicle again and I still get the smell inside the car, but not as strong as before. Any suggestions for getting rid of this smell would be greatly appreciated. Love your videos.
I've gone through 3-4 axle seals in 2 years on my 2000 4runner. I have not checked the dif breather. i bet it's stuck and causing pressure on my seals. I'm gonna check it tomorrow morning. I currently have a axle seal leak, yet again.
Just get the money meter running. Cleaning, disposal, toad testing, etc are all in the clock. No book labor estimating on this. Ps. What sauerkraut is your choice?
Why not use an impact wrench instead of a breaker bar to avoid the risk of swaying on the hydraulic lift? Please keep making more Tacoma vids. Thank you!
You sir are a mechanic, most are not. Wish you were near by.
The Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Tacomas has been alerted in regard to this 'person's' abusive actions.
@@tj4034 I'll take it and give it the kind of care it deserves.

Great video!

If you remove the drain and can't get the filler out, you're screwed!
When the socket almost fell down the funnel into the oil recovery reservoir, hahaha. Good reflexes, Peter!
I usually see workshops having a wire mesh guarding the funnel into the oil drain tank. So no risk of any objects falling in...
I would recommend all 4WD owners to get a power washer. Cleanup after off-roading is a critical maintenance step. 😲
As usual Peter, you do such first class thorough inspection and work. We definitely learn all the important things from you to care for our Toyota's so we have great reliability and longevity. 🚙😁
I extended my rear diff breather to the left rear taillight compartment. Really enjoy your videos!
Bombero33 ran mine to the gas cap compartment. Blew a diff seal cause the breather was kaput.
Good idea
70Marc That’s was my first choice, but opted for the tail light. Either one gets the breather out of the water. Take care!

You saved my Toyota Tacoma
I was pushing fluid out my rear axle vent was completely shut
Two weeks now no more fluid !

Some people get the notion that Toyota's are so reliable you don't have to do maintenance.
Thanks for sharing this video. Interesting video.
Great video as always!
Wouldn’t it be wise to completely remove the vent to be sure it isn’t plugged internally?
Vent for front dif’ is harder to find; might be good if you could show us how to find it.
I agree with you these vents do block internally he has done nothing to make sure the vent is clear
A new Toyota breather is very inexpensive... just replaced mine. good insurance.
should just buy 20 of them at a time.
if ever something was begging to be blasted with brake clean, it was that diff breather! thanks for the video!
You seldom see a Taco in a SMA video.
That's because all Toyota's usually ever need are fluid changes and brake jobs!
Yes, that’s why I bought a Tacoma.
"Now I have it in my mouth" LOL
I like the Forester grille on the wall. I have a Forester myself
Thank you!

Keep that accent!
Keep that work ethic!
True that you don’t see Tacoma neglected this badly…what a shame

Remove the vent and check if it is blocked internally.
I plan on moving my rear diff vent behind the brake light too keep this from happening on my 2020.
Why not change the vent valve?
How much sauerkraut do you eat? I notice you seem to have a LOT of those BIG sauerkraut bottles.
I see ur in California. I have a first gen taco and wondering if youre in the LA area?

I have changed about 5 seals on the left rear hub. But I still get some oil dropping. What could be the issue? I needed help.
Regarding the new Tacomas, with inferior parts being made in Mexico and China, I don't believe they will be a bullet proof as the older ones.
Great!
What's with the commenters talking about sauerkraut? Is it Octoberfest?
I bet it still pluged up inside the axel breather needs pulling and cleaning out
Can you tell me if the diff breather has a torque specification? Thanks 🙂
Rule of thumb is just till snug. Don’t over tighten it you don’t want to strip the threads. 😱
I am worried that one day he will completely snap. Such a craftsman should not have to work on dirt clods.

You should be pushing the breaker bar away from you, not pulling towards you.
