My wife got her car back from the dealer after getting the 12v battery replaced and they told her here’s your key and oh, btw we can’t get your car to turn off or get your display to come on. I searched the web and got the car to turn off, but after trying every video I could find, still could not get her dash to come back on. That is until I found your video ! Within minutes of watching your video, I had her display working again! Thank you! Keep up the good work!

I have a 2008 and sometimes the dashboard doesn’t turn on, what I do is turn it off then turn it on without the break being on, then press the info button while turning the headlight switch on three times that’ll reset the dashboard then press the break and turn it on and that does the trick if it doesn’t do it the first time try a couple times and it’ll turn on. I’m going to use yours see if they stop from just working sometimes as they seem to not wanna work when I’m in a rush, also if I have something heavy in the back, this cars are too sensitive from my experience 😂

Thanks Chris. I've had a flaky combination meter (the technical term for the speedometer display) for about 1-2 years. When I changed the 12V battery, the display wouldn't come on at all as well as I couldn't turn the car fully off. Your fix did the trick

The git the same problem. I saw this problem after I changed the battery.if I unplug the battery, the dashboard comes back for a short time.
This seems to be a common problem, but toyota they didn't want admit.

If this works - which it must for certain model Prius's - you are saving folks a lot of money by having them do an "at home" repair! The Toyota Prius dealers in the L.A. area would start with $100 (or more) just to diagnose the problem, another couple hundred to do a "fix". Thank you for posting this - and encouraging people to take "ownership" over their own Toyota Prius cars!! I was pretty freaked out when the dashboard lights went out. I am no longer afraid - nor feeling the financial "squeeze" every time some small or 'fixable' problem occurs with my 2007 Prius. Thanks much, you're a gem. ELT

You can also put your remote next to the power button and press it three times and the dash board should light up mine did.

Amazing that after getting a new 12 volt battery my speedometer display went black like so many others here. My key wouldn’t pull out of the dash either and I discovered that if you hold down the on-off button for 3 seconds the car will turn off and the key can be removed. Maybe you don’t need to pull that white connector off the battery. Also, later, like overnight, the speedometer starts working.

Thank you so much for this video. (I have a 2006). I just had the 12v replaced and this did the trick!
I'm having terrible problems with my 2006 also. Various things work sometimes and don't other times. I think I may have figured something out though.... if you leave the door half open, not fully closed... so that the little red "door open" warning light is on, that seems to keep the dash lights on when starting it up. You can still lock the doors... just don't close it all the way.
What I do is turn my head light on and off, if the green light bulb is on, the whole dashboard will be on. If it doesn’t show and the headlight is on, most likely the dashboard will be black.
If I notice it’s off (using the lightbulb method) , I keep turning it (the headlights switch) on and off and press on high bead meanwhile foot is on the break. Once lightbulb indicator is on, I proceed to turning on the car.
I give up sometime and just drive with the dashboard off. LOL
I have a rebuilt hybrid battery 1/2019 and a new 12v battery 3/2021. Bad catalytic converter. 2006 Prius.

Permanent fix - at least for me. Replace the battery in your key fob. I had the dark dashboard problem until my fob would not unlock the car anymore so I put a new battery in it and the dashboard problem never happened again. Your owner's manual explains how to change the battery.
It worked for me too. I fixed my dark dashboard problem by following the steps in this video and several other videos but it kept coming back. I started thinking about what you said about your key fob battery and realized that my key fob and its battery were as old as my Prius - seventeen years. I opened the fob and checked the voltage on the battery and it was 2.8 volts. Probably anything less then 3 volts and the fob will be flaky or not work at all. It won't be able to unlock the doors or communicate with the computer to tell it to turn on the dashboard (among other things). So I put in a new battery and the dashboard lights up and works the way it should and hasn't gone dark since. Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

To save u all this trouble, what u can do instead is: press power button on wo hitting the brake, then a 2nd time also wo hitting the brake and then turn AC high all the way and the high beams. Hit the emergency light button and the brake simultaneously and then while still pressing the break hit the power button and that shld solve it.
(u might need to do it more than once sometimes)

Good gref,thats enough to get a car sales man confused! open the door, no, close the door, press the startbutton, get out and run around the car, jump up and down three times, opps you forgot to say captain may i.Wate, another guy jjust posted that you need to keep your headlights on, or was it off? I WAS THINKING ABOUT BUYING A2008 PIRUS, NOW IM THINKING ABOUT THE STRESS, AND AGRAVATION!

Similar thing just happened to me except I could not turn off the car. Start button did nothing. But a mechanic suggested pressing and holding the start button for about 10 seconds and sure enough! Fixed! That turned it off, then next time pressing the start button it turned on normally. May eventually need a new combination meter but it's good for now. Just like an iPhone - hard reset!

Chris, thanks for the battery reset tip. I had replaced a dead original 12yr old 12v Nippon battery following some UA-cam instructions. I had to buy the new battery from the dealer, as these are hard to find in usual places. At that time the dashboard was working fine, but a week later today, I saw this dashboard going dark. I have seen this dashboard issue off and on over these 12 years. This tip fixed the dashboard going dark issue. Many thanks.

As a Prius owner, I like the car very much. Mechanically, ( the motor, brakes etc are first-rate) and you can expect to get 300 k miles or more from this car. But the electronics are a problem. Hybrid battery and especially the 12 volt battery are a problem. I have had to replace the combination meter ($800 +) and am on my 4th 12 volt battery. I hope that competition from Tesla will get Toyota to simplify the electronics and make them more reliable and less costly to fix.
Tesla cars aren’t competing with the Prius because they are not comparable price wise. The Tesla self driving feature is a $15k extra

apparently there are several ways to get around this problem, and two main ways to actually fix it. the cheapest way to fix it is to replace a small capacitor (electronic component the size of a cheerio). here's a video about that:

the capacitor is located on a circuit board that is part ofthe dashboard display (the "cluster" or "combination meter") which shows your speed, gas tank level, etc. it's actually only an inch below where you see the speed on the dash, but you have to remove the whole dash to get to it. then you have to solderthe correct capacitor into place. they cost about $1 orless each but usually come in 10-packs. 220uf 16v, i think, not absolutely certain.
a more expensive fix is to replace the whole cluster / combination meter.
Don't touch that battery. There is a high voltage disconnect and an easier and SAFER way to resolve this issue. Push the start button NO BRAKES, open your driver door (helps indicates this process is working) then car on (no brakes held) hold down CLIMATE button and turn fog lights from off to on to off to on while holding CLIMATE button on display. The open door indicator will light up. Now foot on brake push start button and your dash should display. I would not advise messing with that rear battery if you can avoid it PLUS it's just wayyyyy to much work involved. You have to clear trunk etc.
The battery version works 90% of the time. The open door, don't turn on all the way, go to other screen version only works for me 10% of the time. I have tried about 5 different versions and his is the only reliable one. Oh, and high heat and humidity, makes it worse. Cool weather means fewer problems
As @wesburkett has said, the battery thing works much more reliably. If the climate trick works for any people reading this, then you are the luckier ones, but for me this method rarely works -- maybe the capacitor in the combination meter is more faulty in mine -- ???. The battery thing has never failed me. Yes, sometimes I needed to disconnect that white modular plug two or three times, but I never had to drive with a dark dash.

I bought mine used, less than a month ago, and just happened two random times. Both times when I waited (guesstimate 5-10 min ) it then came back on. I'm thinking I better plan on replacing the combo meter....

Hello man I have Prius 2006 and I replace the battery when I try to turn on it will but. I have all dashboard lights on and it wouldn’t. Let me put it on reverse or drive what can I do ?
Is it an aftermarket radio and Bluetooth? I lost my radio, backup camera everything.
Eventually, this will not get things back to normal. However for a while it will make it so you can go down the road, and you may have to plug and unplug it several times before it will start your car with all the dash lights. If you're back at the battery, watch the dash lights. if you see the 'red car door' image appear on your dash, it's safe to close the hatch and go start the car. eventually, though, you will have to repair or replace the combination meter.

There are.two. make sure you get the one near the red positive . It's like one motion depress and pull under.the bottom.

This should bring the all the lights on but if it doesn't then pump the break hard, this should for sure (95%) bring the lights on. If the above doesn't work then instead of turning the head lights on.. hold the lights to high beams, this should work too. If all of the above don't work then keep the hatch open and driver side door open and try the above tips.
This used to happen a lot when I kept any of the door open for say 5mins mind that I had a weaker 12v battery, at times it used to show 10.5-11.5 volts. I recently replaced the battery, I can reproduce the same problem if I immediately try to start the car after coming from somewhere and then letting the water coolant pump run after turning the car off. However, if I give some time after the pump runs then the car starts normally.

the problem gets worse over time.... nothing serious but you won't have a speedo
Lost locksmith to replace my lost key however he could not make another key because dash was dark on 2008 Prius. Also is suck in park because no key and need to be moved. Please advise I'm in Los Angeles. Please advise. Thanks

what is the cause of the dark dashboard? have you found the source of the problem?
A capacitor needs replaced on the circuit board that controls the speedometer. But you have to disassemble the dashboard to remove the circuit board and for a hobbyist this can be an all day job.
My 2008 Toyota Prius lights doesn't work either it's comes on every now and then. Now I have a red triangle light is on trying to figure out the problem.
That is known as the triangle of death, sorry to say. Which usually means you need to see a mechanic asap

A Prius guy in AZ charged my partner $400 for a new board to fix this problem and has a 1 year warranty. Was I taken?
I would say no. These cars (although great overall) have some history of flaky combination meters most often caused by bad capacitors. You can "limp" along trying this reset every so often as I have done but the new board is a more reliable fix.
Don't work for my 07 Prius because the trunk won't open. No electricity. No some lights, can't lock or unlock the doors of trunk. A y other suggestions ? John
So there is no way to manually open the car doors? If so then that's a bad design.
Theres a little tab inside the trunk u can open it manually from inside
Some people have set the start button is faulty insight and can cause all this. Usually this button is pretty cheap to get but there's no guarantee this is your problem

Mine did the same then after a week did it again didn’t fix permanently the Toyota place wants me to pay 1000 but they work I bought a $300 battery in the back and after they changed the battery is when I had a problem with the dash didn’t before that so I did the trick but like I said it went out again after a week please help

OH MY... By pulling that plug from the 12 volt battery, all you did was to Reset the ECM and ALL CODES were lost including your radio presets, clock, pollution controls etc...
