Tomorrow we begin a journey towards recording an album of Erik Franklin's art songs. It's one that began during the pandemic when Erik finally had time to sit down and pour out music onto the page.
Since then I have been a fan and champion of his art song. They exemplify emotional and vivid storytelling through text interwoven intrinsically with music.
This particular piece comes from his cycle Verses for Children which dive back into the imaginative wonder that is childhood - talking to animals, sailing across the ocean, climbing trees, and reaching out to try to touch the moon.
Stay tuned for so much more about this upcoming album, Songs from Earth and Sky, and ways that you can get live preview performances and support the creation of this project. We'll be teaming up with pianist Hui-Chuan Chen @huichuan_piano to record with Oktaven @oktavenaudio in New York in November!
And did I mention Erik is writing a song cycle for me to premiere? It's about the humanity of the Norse goddesses and it truly lives up to the word EPIC.
