In 1970 I was 11 years old, and this song was all over the radio, both AM and FM. You couldn’t escape it, nor did you want to. It was both gentle, and volcanic at the same time. It transports you to places inside your very being. You both heard the build from the opening stanzas, to the final ending. It’s about magnificent as it gets.

Come to think of it, the whole album was everywhere for awhile, and it was glorious.
Between this and Abbey Road and a number of other stunning releases in that little bunch of years, it’s a good thing we were too young to worry about getting anything practical done.
I personally spent about half of my life in the years from about 1970-74 lying on my family’s red shag rug, lost in a pair of earphones.

Paul and Art were not related, but you might say they went way back together. Friends since elementary school, they first found a little success as teens in the 1950s, performing under the names Tom & Jerry, with a hit, written by Paul Simon, titled “Hey, Schoolgirl.” A few years later, in the 1960s, they gained traction under their real names with a string of massive hits, including “The Sound of Silence,” “Homeward Bound,” “I Am a Rock,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme.” This song was from their fourth and last studio album, also titled “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” This album also included another of their most ambitious songs titled “The Boxer.” The duo broke up a short while later, but they eventually reunited and have performed many times together over the years. Paul Simon went on to a very successful career as a solo singer songwriter.

Thank you for sharing your time, and thoughts, with all of us. This is a bit of nostalgia. My Dad sung this since I remember. I cry when I hear it. Partly joy, and part sadness. First, they are NOT a band lol. They are a duo. But I totally appreciate your comment on the classics. it was really kind of an anthem to the end of the 1960's tumultuous decade of change, even though IMO the 1960's did not end until President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974. to learn the history of the 1960' early 1970's is to understand the music and how it changed and was involved in that change. Really the 1950's didn't end until President Kennedy was assassinated...that upended everything along with a few other things that some politicians are now trying to rewrite history for their own spin and agenda... but I digress....

After hearing the Righteous Brothers sing Old Man River, Art suggested to Paul that he expand the original quiet little two verse lullaby that Paul intended, into a three verse Epic that built up to a climax in the third verse. Paul was resistant but Roy Halee, their engineer and co producer, agreed with Artie so Paul went ahead and wrote the third verse in 20 minutes! Paul and Roy worked with Hal Blaine on the percussion elements while Artie sat with Larry Knechtel to work out the Piano arrangement (for which Larry won a Grammy for Best Arrangement 🏆). Clive Davis from Columbia decided right away to put this title track from the album as the first single which surprised both artists. They both thought of it as an album piece rather than a single, both because it had such a quiet start as well as it's length of around 6 minutes. Simon's misgivings were allayed when he first heard it broadcast over the radio. Artie's voice and the musical accomplishment translated well in the low fidelity of most car radios at the time. The rest is history. Many see it as the best popular recording of all time. 10/10

Thank God. A couple that let's the song play through without pausing. The most beautiful song. Personally I feel it's about Jesus in our walk of life and being there when times get rough. 🙏 He's there for us all.

One of the best of so many great songs from the all time best duo. Try my personal favourite "Kathy's Song" Art Garfunkel describes it as Paul Simon's best love song.

This is the original, it was written by Paul Simon ( he wrote all their songs ). It is sung mainly by Art Garfunkel, but Paul joins in on the third verse. No cover of any of their songs can touch the originals…..they were the best.

Always warms my heart when I see younger ones discovering artist from the sixties and seventies.
You know, when unlike today, music was exploding with talent. No auto tune and this crap today. What makes me laugh is that these rappers today aren't even singing, they're talking and they all need auto tune to sound good. Artist today both black and white are all angry, its like all joyless.
Everybody has to drop f-bombs to get their point across, why? I'm 64 and I'm pretty damn sure that the death of music started around 1976 with disco and it's been a gradual decline up to where we're at now which is dead. I OPD today's music (Officially Pronounced Dead) and this isn't old grumpy guy complaining. I have plenty of evidence to support my claim. Let me start with black music from the sixties. This was called soul music back then.
The Motown Sound out of Detroit was phenomenal ! Check this out, Diana Ross &The Supremes, Smokey Robinson &The Miracles, Stevie Wonder, The Temptation's (who were crazy good), The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye,The Jackson 5, The Marvelettes,, Martha & The Vandellas, Gladys Knight &The Pips, Lionel Richie and these ate just the ones that I can pull off of the top of my head.
This is a who's who of Hall Of Fame stuff here and that's just artist's from one record label. Black music was exploding with talent back then, give it a listen. My favorites were the black girl groups, so cool and looking back some very attractive girls.
Where has the talent all gone? Now for pop or rock music, so much talent in the sixties and the first half of the seventies. The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Door's, Led Zeppelin, Queen, to name a few and then the two all time, all time GOAT'S The Beatles and Bob Dylan ! Not even close ! I sometimes want to believe that for the sixties to give us these two in one decade that the stars or planets had to be lined up in some unusual alignment. What's the odds that in 1957 a 17 year old John would be introduced to a 15 Paul McCartney and they hooked up and then 4 months later Paul introduced John to his 14 year old school pal George Harrison who auditioned for John as a lead guitarist. Drummer Ringo Starr was the last to join in 1962. Boggles my mind that the nucleus of the first three young teens along with Ringo go down as the most important and influential both musically and culturally in the history of recorded music. They hold every record there is. They have sold over 800 million albums worldwide as of 2014. 1.6 billion, yes that's billion in the US alone and around 2.5 billion singles world wide. All 13 Lp releases in the US between 1964-70 all #1 a record and with the 3 Anthology LP's and and 5 compilation LP's also all #1 for a total of 21 #1 albums in the US. Between 1964-70 they had 20 #1 hits and 34 top ten hits on the Billboard Top 100, both records. Their 1965 song "Yesterday" written by a then 23/year old Paul McCartney is the most covered song in history with over 2,200 covers of it by other artist.
I hope you two are comprehending all of these crazy numbers here.
I almost forgot, as you two may be aware vinyl records are a big deal again. Guess who sells more vinyl LP's every year over the last ten years worldwide and every year here I'm the US is? That would be The Beatles. Not too shabby for a band that recorded for only 7 years between 1962-69 and they only recorded 4 songs in 1962. The Lennon/McCartney catalog of 200 songs written in those seven years is unsurpassed in the history of recorded music. They are by far the most successful songwriting partnership in history and it ain't even close. Michael Jackson bought the publishing rights to the Lennon/McCartney catalog in 1985 for the then staggering sum of 47 million dollars. When he died he was pretty much broke. His estate said that they were forced to sell the catalog a few years ago so that his two children could live a comfortable life for 757 million dollars and I've also seen one billion dollars. Either way a pretty wise investment by Michael. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
Appreciate them because the likes of The Beatles will never be seen again. Now for Bob Dylan, this guy has been awarded evey major award that one can receive. In 2008 he was presented with the "Pulitzer Prize" for his "Profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power" These aren't my words but those of the Pulitzer committee.
In 2016 he was awarded The Nobel Prize for literature after he had turned it down for years. Dylan was never one for awards and accolades but I think that he's up in years he might appreciate now.
In 2012 President Obama placed the American Medal of freedom around his neck, name Dylan's got it. One Obama story I like is that when he presented Dylan with his award and presenting Paul McCartney the Gershwin Prize in 2010 that he was quite nervous meeting them as he grew up loving The Beatles and McCartney's solo music and Dylan's music. Who would have guessed that the leader of the free world would be nervous to meet two aging musicians. You can bet that he awarded these two because he very much wanted to meet them. Let me tell you that Dylan was rapping long before rap was even a concept. Think I'm kidding you? Then check out two songs from his iconic Lp
"Bringing It All Back Home" The songs "It's Alright Ma (I'm only Bleeding) which will blow you away and will show you that their was as much BS in America in 1965 as there is today.
Listen to the lyrics closely please. Another one is " Subterranean Homesick Blues" its incredible. Another great one from this Lp is "Mr Tambourine Man" he's not rapping but the poetry and imagery is spellbinding.
I've read that this was about an acid trip he had and coming down from it.
I love the lyric "I know the evenings empire has returned into sand, vanished from my hands, left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping.
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet, I have no one to meet and the ancient streets too dead for dreaming" Read that again,it's beautiful.
Take it from one who did his share of LSD in my late teens and early twenties.
That's coming down from a trip after expanding your mind for about 12 hours. You are branded on your feet for another 24 hours, your body and mind are drained but you can't sleep. That was the only downside to the drug and probably the main reason I stopped taking. 12 to 14 hours of mind expanding bliss as it sharpens all five senses in our brain by about 15% which doesn't seem like much but trust me, its a whole lot, like WOW ! I would suggest that you go on u tube and type in Bob Dylan reactions to these songs aside from "Mr Tambourine Man" but a must listen on this one but the studio version, not a live one. On the first two check out the number of young black males listening that say "This man was rapping, how long ago is this again"
I would suggest that all young rappers and want to be rappers, listen to Dylan as its invaluable information. Let me warn you two though that The Beatles and Dylan have the two strictest of all copyrights. I see enough people get around it but I don't know how you go about it. You could reach out to some reactors and ask how you do it. I don't know if you two are aware of who The Righteous Brothers are but check out You've Lost That Loving Feeling" video from 1964 and is still the most played song on radio to this day and from 1965 the video from the Andy Williams Show live performance of "Unchained Melody" in great color and great sound, you'll be blown away. These were two young white guys and their music was called blue eyed soul back in the day. Also the video for "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, amazing. Two more and don't laugh. Frank Sinatra "Fly Me To The Moon" and "My Way" you know Frank, "The King of cool" back I'm the day. Amazing songs. I've seen a lot of younger ones both black and white who have reacted to these and are blown away. I didn't mean to rant here but rather educate out of love about all of the great music from the past when the world was exploding with true talent. Do what you may with it. I'm going to subscribe now and see what you two bring to the table. If you lean way towards this modern stuff I'll be out pretty quickly.
Sorry but this crap today, that ain't music but it is a whole lot mind numbing, meaningless BS !
    Take care guysl
