I was at a Simon & Garfunkel concert. Simon said we have an album coming soon out here is a new song for you. Garfunkel stood alone on the dark stage under a single spotlight with his face & mass of golden hair glowing. Dressed in all black his form vanished. He started to sing a-cappella. It was Bridge Over Troubled Water. The song ended & after a few moments of silence the spell was broken, only then could the stunned audience applaud. I have always been haunted by the beauty of that performance.

In 1970, I wandered into a "listening booth", in a music wing of my Jr. College during lunch, and grabbed this album for the 45 minutes I'd be killing between classes. Put on the 🎧 and this song made some impression. I never looked at Simon and Garfunkel the way way again. I mean they had all that music from b4, but, wow! This song, with headphones, it nearly made me cry that afternoon, at 20 years old! Luckily, the place was nearly empty. And, of course, I went and bought that LP very soon after. To this day, I'm 70 now, I still live these songs from that era! Good reaction, BTW! Also, Keep doing THE WARNING! I'm part of that army...🤘

They are from Forest Hills, New York City. Met Garfunkel when I was 10. Took guitar lessons with friend of mine Lou Pearlman. His parents invite me over for dinner, and Lou introduces me to his cousin Art. Had No IDEA who he was at the time. Met him again there a month later, still no idea but still have the autograph he signed for me. And Lou went on to form the Backstreet Boys.

Simon and Garfunkel were one of the most iconic music groups of the 1960's and early 1970's. Scarborough Fair was another favorite of mine. On the surface it is just a folk type love song, but if you listen to the words carefully it was an anti-(Vietnam) War song.

Yes, Paul wrote it for Art to sing entirely, and Art sang it alone, in Central Park for example. To me this studio recording sounds very much like Paul on the second verse. Their voices were similar, but I hear a different sound and slightly different vocal style on that verse. I was a singer and have a keen ear for voices. Roy Halee produced and engineered the song. Larry Knechtel, a studio musician in Los Angeles in the 60's and 70's, is the pianist.

Paul Simon is one of the greatest song writers of the modern era, from 1960s to the present. You could react to a different Paul Simon song each hour for a week and not find a bad song.
There are so many hits from Paul Simon both when he was with Garfunkel and later in his solo career. Even the 'non-hits' are fantastic. But I would start by listening to the hits, like America, Scarborough Fair, Mrs. Robinson, and The Boxer.

Elvis covers this...it was the top song of 1970 in the US. In 1981, they gave a free concert in Central Park (NYC) where 500,000 attended. Paul Simon is the main songwriter and lyricist. After they broke up, Paul Simon released Graceland (Grammy for album of the year in 1987). Graceland is Elvis's house. Paul Simon's music always changes and I especially love Kodachrome, My Little Town and the songs "Graceland" and "Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes". Total rabbit hole here. Just the Simon and Garfunkel music itself is so stunning....

I like you and have already Subscribed and you said something VERY significant when you said " I could not pause it as I was sooooo absorbed!".
EXACTLY, my friend and that is why just any pauses ( for copyright purposes where applicable ) should be kept to the minimum as we are ALSO absorbed in it, and pausing breaks up the rhythm, flow, continuity, and momentum. Once it is over we then be really interested in your view and observations.
A salutary lesson I would suggest for us all, my friend. Good Luck :)

Simon and Garfunkel almost always sang as a duo. This was one of the few songs that Garfunkel took the solo on (until the last verse when Simon joined him). Paul Simon wrote all their songs, including this one. They were originally from New York and went to school together. They recorded a pop song in the 50s called Red Rubber Ball under the name Tom and Jerry. But it was when they moved into folk (or folk-rock) that they really took off. Their first big hit was Sound of Silence. The also wrote the music for the movie The Graduate (e.g. Mrs. Robinson). Sadly, Troubled Water was one of their last songs together. Simon,of course went on to a long solo career. He just retired a year or so ago. Garfunkel made a few solo albums, but didn't have the success Simon did. They were the backbone the music I listened to when I was in college. Were always one of my favorites.

Paul Simon (The short Dark Haired one) wrote the lyrics to this and Sounds of Silence. Art Garfunkel is singing(Tall blond). Although they usually sang together Paul Simon decided one clear voice would be more appropriate for this song. He felt that Garfunkel voice was more appropriate (even thought Simon wrote it). They split up right after this. Simon went on to be more successful than Garfunkel, probably because many consider him to be one of the best lyricists of the twentieth century. Though I have to say this song and the Sounds of Silence where his two best.
Disturbed version of Songs of Silence was good as well but Simon and Garfunkel's was very different, both are great but very different in tone from each other.

One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Id love to see you react to some of Paul Simon’s solo work! He wrote all of the songs (lyrics and music) for Simin and Garfunkel and Garfunkel would usually sing lead or harmonies on them.
Here is a list of a bunch of Paul Simon songs to choose from (or if you wanted to go down a Simon rabbit hole you could watch them all!)
They are in no particular order and honestly they are all equally fantastic. Any one of them could be released as a single and top the charts
    So here they are :
Kodachrome - ( Super catchy guitar, melody, and just an overall happy a mood-lifting track)
Still Crazy After All These Years - (Amazingly crafted chord progressions, beautiful melody and soul crushing lyrics about “the one who got away”)
50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - (Beautifully written verses and a chorus that will get stuck in your head all day, fantastic drumming on this one too)
Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard - (just fun and catchy. It’d be very hard to find a person that wouldn’t enjoy this song)
Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes - (Beautiful African influenced harmonies and rhythm)
You Can Call Me Al - (Lyrically and musically brilliant - I would suggest watching a lyric video over the music video which is a bit distracting and takes away from the song imo)
Slip Slidin’ Away - ( catchy, melancholy but yet so relatable)
Something So Right - (One of the best love songs ever written imo)
Late in the Evening - (Rockin’ and bad ass! Also a fantastic horn section!)
Have a Good Time - (catchy, good vibes)
Father and Daughter - (this ones a tear jerker for me)
The Only Living Boy in New York - (technically a Simon & Garfunkel song but he wrote it about Art Garfunkel while he was away shooting a film. That is what the song is about and it is a beautiful tribute to friendship)

And Art Garfunkel's voice is ... well just amazing. It's only too bad these elementary school friends could not overcome their personal differences.

Simon & Garfunkel were huge in the 60s and 70s. Art Garfunkel is singing. He is the tall one with the curly hair. Paul Simon is the songwriter.

You need to look at who wrote the original music. Paul Simon. Art Garfunkel sings this, so angelically. Beautiful

So, just for the cultural reference, the song starts out simple, and maybe even a little campy. Obvious now, they were holding back. The sound of the piano, very reminiscent to church music in the US at the time. Churches with instruments either had an organ or a piano, the piano churches had lead- in music for hymns that sounded very similar. Also, Art was rarely at the forefront. Paul pushed for him to lead this, to the point of friction, at the latter part of their collaboration, to the point that it was the beginning of the end of their creative partnership. Always friends, still performed together after, but this was the end of their writing years.

A deep cut, "Dangling Conversation" is very beautiful about an old couple growing old. The live version of "For Emily" is very good. They have a lot of great songs, but this is probably their best. That's the only live version of theirs that I like. They are generally not as good live as in the studio--my opinion, but Sounds of Silence live is usually just an acoustic guitar and Paul and Artie, where the studio version has a lot more going. I just like that a lot better.

They're both from the US. Art Garfunkel from NYC and Paul Simon across the river in Newark, NJ. Easily one of the most famous folk rock singers from the 20th century with a slew of great songs. Besides this and 'The Sound of Silence' there's 'Mrs. Robinson', 'Scarborough Fair', 'America', 'The Boxer', 'I Am A Rock'. 'The Boxer' is my favourite by them.

Simon & Garfunkel are the poets of our time. Right up there with the likes of Byron, Shelley. They should be studied in Eng Lit classes!

I will share what I know....Simon said he has never WRITTEN a song this quickly in his career......in fact....he eluded to the fact he didn't know where the words CAME FROM??!!! The song just wrote itself. This song started out as a religious hymn......I am of the mindset that GOD actually wrote this song....to bring hope courage and comfort to his children .....cause life is often hard and painful. It makes most people cry when they experience this song. It's a spiritual experience truly. This was their BEST CREATION.

I just subscribed after I watched your reaction to The Righteous Brothers " You've lost that loving feeling." Saw another video at your site, subscribed because I like your reactions and style. So Decided to watch everything I heard you say You reacted to only to find not only are they not here, but the Righteous brothers are not either. Only could find 8 reactions. Fine, looks like you are new, but where are the ones you have done? If taking request I'd like either Carrie Underwood ft John Legend ( who wrote it for her voice) new Christmas song ( before new year) " Hallelujah " or Carrie,s Song " TheChampion" ft. Ludacris. Thanks.

@@Hawksmere New subscriber here after this reaction. I believe you said you'd heard Disturbed do The Sound of Silence. It is a Simon and Garfunkel song...Im hoping you're aware that was a cover. PLEASE check out the original. Also check out The Boxer and Cecilia. Welcome to the rabbit hole...their discography IS huge. You really cant go wrong...you CAN jusr Google them and blindly pick any song. I've been a fan since ALMOST the beginning of their career from in the WayBack Machine in the 1970s. If you don't have some kind of an emotional reaction to this song then truat me, there really IS something wrong with your soul ok? This will always be a special song to me. Myself and my 2 brothers had a playlist put together for the day my Dad was put onto palliative care and taken off all his machines. We sat around him and sang to him all day a huge selection of his favorite songs. THIS was the last song he heard us sing before he finally passed awat and it was one of his true favorites. So it always reminds me of our special time we were able to have with him that day. Your ears have just been blessed by one of the most beautiful songs written. Listen to more of them ~you won't ever be disappointed. Peace Love and Good Music buddy! 😉❤😎🤘

How rare is it that top-notch 100-drafts poetry is fitted to such good tunes, good musicians, and such good singing. Paul Simon (shorter guy) is one of this country's better poetic lyricists. Combine that with a generational tenor like Garfunkel. Masterful.

  • @iselanelson1466

Simon originally wrote the first 2 verses with intention for Art to sing it. Art asked Paul to add another verse because he wanted to take to a higher level. Paul went to a room and wrote last verse within min.
