I was at a Simon & Garfunkel concert. Simon said we have an album coming soon out here is a new song for you. Garfunkel stood alone on the dark stage under a single spotlight with his face & mass of golden hair glowing. Dressed in all black his form vanished. He started to sing a-cappella. It was Bridge Over Troubled Water. The song ended & after a few moments of silence the spell was broken, only then could the stunned audience applaud. I have always been haunted by the beauty of that performance.
Wonderful reaction. You are moved beyond words Paul Simon is an immensely gifted lyricist and composer, and Art Garfunkel's angelic vocals make this song reach deep. I feel the voice of God in the song, and we should all strive to embody Godly love. Thank you for posting.
Garfunkel had one of the clearest purest voices of all time. When you add the song writing talents and harmonies of Paul Simon, you can see why they have been musical icons since the 60s.
I am still somewhat shocked that so many of this generation's youth (20's and early 30's) have not heard of Paul Simon. When this Hall of Fame duo split, Paul continued to produce some of the best music of several decades.
Your reaction to this made my day! Simon & Garfunkel were my favorites growing up. Paul Simon is my favorite songwriter. Such intelligent poetry. They are native New Yorkers.
Ok....almost ALL of their songs are fantastic!!! Paul Simon is one of the most brilliant writers ever and Art Garfunkel has such an angelic voice. Just start going thru their library and you won’t be disappointed!!!
In 1970, I wandered into a "listening booth", in a music wing of my Jr. College during lunch, and grabbed this album for the 45 minutes I'd be killing between classes. Put on the 🎧 and this song made some impression. I never looked at Simon and Garfunkel the way way again. I mean they had all that music from b4, but, wow! This song, with headphones, it nearly made me cry that afternoon, at 20 years old! Luckily, the place was nearly empty. And, of course, I went and bought that LP very soon after. To this day, I'm 70 now, I still live these songs from that era! Good reaction, BTW! Also, Keep doing THE WARNING! I'm part of that army...🤘
"The Boxer" and "Homeward Bound" are excellent also. I was so fortunate to see them in concert in 1964. I - and everyone else - was so devastated when they split up so soon. They were perfection together. I have their albums and still listen to them weekly.
Yes. Art Garfunkel sings like an angel. They had so many great songs and then Paul simon went on to do lots of great songs alone and in collaboration with others. These two were huge in the 70s.
They are from Forest Hills, New York City. Met Garfunkel when I was 10. Took guitar lessons with friend of mine Lou Pearlman. His parents invite me over for dinner, and Lou introduces me to his cousin Art. Had No IDEA who he was at the time. Met him again there a month later, still no idea but still have the autograph he signed for me. And Lou went on to form the Backstreet Boys.
Art Garfunkel has one of the most eerily beautiful voices that has never been matched in the 50 years since this song was released. He is by far the most underrated singer ever.
Simon and Garfunkel were one of the most iconic music groups of the 1960's and early 1970's. Scarborough Fair was another favorite of mine. On the surface it is just a folk type love song, but if you listen to the words carefully it was an anti-(Vietnam) War song.
They have been best friends since they were teenages. Years down the road they went through some trouble when they didn't talk for a while. They are one of the best duo's out their and their songs are amazing.
There aren't many songs that make you think about where you have been and where you are now - the many people you want to thank for your journey and their uncompromised support. This song lays it all bare and nails the human traits of vulnerability and courage.
The tall guy is Art Garfunkel and it's his voice you're hearing. Paul Simon sings mostly backup, plays instruments and writes the songs. A fantastic team!
Paul Simon sings lead a lot! Yes, Art is the "lead singer" here, but Paul actually does more leads than Artie, if you listen to more of their stuff, you'll hear that.
@@rgoers Not often that two Ralph's converse on UA-cam. If you're right, I've been wrong about it for years. Yes, Paul wrote it for Art to sing entirely, and Art sang it alone, in Central Park for example. To me this studio recording sounds very much like Paul on the second verse. Their voices were similar, but I hear a different sound and slightly different vocal style on that verse. I was a singer and have a keen ear for voices. Do you know definitively that it's Art on the second verse?

The Sound of Silence was written by Paul Simon. They were the original singers of that song. Art Garfunkel has one of the most beautiful purest voices of all time. 👍
Paul Simon wrote all their songs, he plays all the instruments including guitar, he is the short dark haired man. Art Garfunkel sings the lead in all the songs, the tall man. He has the Angelic voice.

Simon (the short one in front) wrote the song, and sings harmony on the few lines starting with "Sail on, Silver Girl". Garfunkel (the tall one in back) is the solo singer. Roy Halee produced and engineered the song. Larry Knechtel, a studio musician in Los Angeles in the 60's and 70's, is the pianist.
Paul Simon is one of the greatest song writers of the modern era, from 1960s to the present. You could react to a different Paul Simon song each hour for a week and not find a bad song. There are so many hits from Paul Simon both when he was with Garfunkel and later in his solo career. Even the 'non-hits' are fantastic. But I would start by listening to the hits, like America, Scarborough Fair, Mrs. Robinson, and The Boxer.
Elvis covers this...it was the top song of 1970 in the US. In 1981, they gave a free concert in Central Park (NYC) where 500,000 attended. Paul Simon is the main songwriter and lyricist. After they broke up, Paul Simon released Graceland (Grammy for album of the year in 1987). Graceland is Elvis's house. Paul Simon's music always changes and I especially love Kodachrome, My Little Town and the songs "Graceland" and "Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes". Total rabbit hole here. Just the Simon and Garfunkel music itself is so stunning....
I like you and have already Subscribed and you said something VERY significant when you said " I could not pause it as I was sooooo absorbed!". Simon and Garfunkel almost always sang as a duo. This was one of the few songs that Garfunkel took the solo on (until the last verse when Simon joined him). Paul Simon wrote all their songs, including this one. They were originally from New York and went to school together. They recorded a pop song in the 50s called Red Rubber Ball under the name Tom and Jerry. But it was when they moved into folk (or folk-rock) that they really took off. Their first big hit was Sound of Silence. The also wrote the music for the movie The Graduate (e.g. Mrs. Robinson). Sadly, Troubled Water was one of their last songs together. Simon,of course went on to a long solo career. He just retired a year or so ago. Garfunkel made a few solo albums, but didn't have the success Simon did. They were the backbone the music I listened to when I was in college. Were always one of my favorites.
Paul Simon (The short Dark Haired one) wrote the lyrics to this and Sounds of Silence. Art Garfunkel is singing(Tall blond). Although they usually sang together Paul Simon decided one clear voice would be more appropriate for this song. He felt that Garfunkel voice was more appropriate (even thought Simon wrote it). They split up right after this. Simon went on to be more successful than Garfunkel, probably because many consider him to be one of the best lyricists of the twentieth century. Though I have to say this song and the Sounds of Silence where his two best. Disturbed version of Songs of Silence was good as well but Simon and Garfunkel's was very different, both are great but very different in tone from each other.

Simon & Garfunkel are american. Art Garfunkel (tall man in the front of vinyl), was the lead singer, so incredible. Paul Simon wrote & did the lyrics for them. Just superb. xx
The Sound of Silence was written by Paul Simon and is their song. It is sung the way Simon meant it to be sung with a sadness Disturbed’s versio is one of anger.
The album topped the Billboard 200 charts for 10 weeks and stayed on the charts for 85 weeks.[40] According to Columbia Records, 1.7 million copies were sold in the first three weeks in the United States.[38] In the United Kingdom, the album topped the charts for 35 weeks, and spent 285 weeks in the top 100, from 1970 to 1975.[40] Furthermore, it received 8× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and 4× Platinum in Canada.[40] Bridge over Troubled Water has since sold 3,163,789 copies in the UK,[61] and over 25 million copies worldwide.[62]
Simon and Garfunkel Knew each other from Youth and sang as a Duo in School sadly The Album Bridge Over Troubled Water Was their last as they Pursued Solo Careers Scarborough Fair is Great Live on the Andy Williams Show and The Sounds of Silence Studio Version is great
One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Id love to see you react to some of Paul Simon’s solo work! He wrote all of the songs (lyrics and music) for Simin and Garfunkel and Garfunkel would usually sing lead or harmonies on them. Here is a list of a bunch of Paul Simon songs to choose from (or if you wanted to go down a Simon rabbit hole you could watch them all!) They are in no particular order and honestly they are all equally fantastic. Any one of them could be released as a single and top the charts So here they are : Kodachrome - ( Super catchy guitar, melody, and just an overall happy a mood-lifting track) Still Crazy After All These Years - (Amazingly crafted chord progressions, beautiful melody and soul crushing lyrics about “the one who got away”) 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - (Beautifully written verses and a chorus that will get stuck in your head all day, fantastic drumming on this one too) Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard - (just fun and catchy. It’d be very hard to find a person that wouldn’t enjoy this song) Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes - (Beautiful African influenced harmonies and rhythm) You Can Call Me Al - (Lyrically and musically brilliant - I would suggest watching a lyric video over the music video which is a bit distracting and takes away from the song imo) Slip Slidin’ Away - ( catchy, melancholy but yet so relatable) Something So Right - (One of the best love songs ever written imo) Late in the Evening - (Rockin’ and bad ass! Also a fantastic horn section!) Have a Good Time - (catchy, good vibes) Father and Daughter - (this ones a tear jerker for me) The Only Living Boy in New York - (technically a Simon & Garfunkel song but he wrote it about Art Garfunkel while he was away shooting a film. That is what the song is about and it is a beautiful tribute to friendship)
My favorite song ever. I’m a doctor. To me, this song is about friendship but also about being a physician. Listen to “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme.”
Paul Simon is a song writer and a poet. Probably the best the sixties had to offer. Check out the boxer, sounds of silence or I am a rock. Continue to listen to them and you'll continue to be amazed
AMAZED you managed to miss one of Pop music’s most famous acts!! These guys are right up there in public familiarity with the Beatles or Rolling Stones or Sinatra or Elvis, and their music has been heard everywhere from cafes and grocery stores to movies. This album is only their finest (and final) hour - a legendary masterpiece from the title cut here to its casually offhand little finish. You must hear it, ASAP. 🏆
great song and great reaction! please react to the same song by elvis in vegas in 1970. after seeing Elvis perform the song, paul simon said "That's it, we might as well all give up now."
Simon's instincts were rarely good. He leaned on Garfunkel and Halee alot to guide his way. Without Garfunkel's insistent pressure to write a third verse and go epic with the ending, Bridge Over Troubled Water would have been a cute little lullabye sung by Simon in falsetto.(True story).
I've heard several versions of this song including Elvis version and they are good but none are as Great as the original as Simon and Gatfunkel they really pull on the heart strings
Can you imagine not having seen Rembrandt ? If you don't know Simon and Garfunkel, you should make the journey. Paul Simon's songwriting is among the greatest in the late 20th Century. And Art Garfunkel's voice is ... well just amazing. It's only too bad these elementary school friends could not overcome their personal differences.
So, just for the cultural reference, the song starts out simple, and maybe even a little campy. Obvious now, they were holding back. The sound of the piano, very reminiscent to church music in the US at the time. Churches with instruments either had an organ or a piano, the piano churches had lead- in music for hymns that sounded very similar. Also, Art was rarely at the forefront. Paul pushed for him to lead this, to the point of friction, at the latter part of their collaboration, to the point that it was the beginning of the end of their creative partnership. Always friends, still performed together after, but this was the end of their writing years.
A deep cut, "Dangling Conversation" is very beautiful about an old couple growing old. The live version of "For Emily" is very good. They have a lot of great songs, but this is probably their best. That's the only live version of theirs that I like. They are generally not as good live as in the studio--my opinion, but Sounds of Silence live is usually just an acoustic guitar and Paul and Artie, where the studio version has a lot more going. I just like that a lot better.
They're both from the US. Art Garfunkel from NYC and Paul Simon across the river in Newark, NJ. Easily one of the most famous folk rock singers from the 20th century with a slew of great songs. Besides this and 'The Sound of Silence' there's 'Mrs. Robinson', 'Scarborough Fair', 'America', 'The Boxer', 'I Am A Rock'. 'The Boxer' is my favourite by them.
I will share what I know....Simon said he has never WRITTEN a song this quickly in his career......in fact....he eluded to the fact he didn't know where the words CAME FROM??!!! The song just wrote itself. This song started out as a religious hymn......I am of the mindset that GOD actually wrote this song....to bring hope courage and comfort to his children .....cause life is often hard and painful. It makes most people cry when they experience this song. It's a spiritual experience truly. This was their BEST CREATION.
These guys produced some of the most wonderful songs of that era. One you must listen to is Bleeker Street. (ua-cam.com/video/UgNx-fPHNYM/v-deo.html) The lyrics are pure poetry, (I saw a shadow touch a shadows hand), I mean how can you even think of that.

How rare is it that top-notch 100-drafts poetry is fitted to such good tunes, good musicians, and such good singing. Paul Simon (shorter guy) is one of this country's better poetic lyricists. Combine that with a generational tenor like Garfunkel. Masterful.
Simon originally wrote the first 2 verses with intention for Art to sing it. Art asked Paul to add another verse because he wanted to take to a higher level. Paul went to a room and wrote last verse within min.

Simon & Garfunkel are american. Art Garfunkel (tall man in the front of vinyl), was the lead singer, so incredible. Paul Simon wrote & did the lyrics for them. Just superb. xx
Beautiful music with a beautiful meaning
Every hear piano intro..that always want make me cry.. so sad voice for me...
The Sound of Silence was written by Paul Simon and is their song. It is sung the way Simon meant it to be sung with a sadness Disturbed’s versio is one of anger.
You should do 'Sound of Silence' by them as I think you will also like this.
Didn't he literally start this video saying Sound of Silence was, like, the greatest song he'd ever heard?
Hi, yes I did Sound of silence which was breathtaking. Please check it out in my videos. What do you think of Disturb’s cover of it?
@@Hawksmere you reacted to the live central park version of sound of silence, you could do another video of the studio recording. It is incredible.
@@Hawksmere the best cover was made by Pentatonix.
You left out that BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER beat out The Beatles' LET IT BE for album of the year! Not an easy task, by any means!
The guy playing piano is Lawrence Knechtel who was a keyboard player and bassist. He was a member of the Wrecking Crew and bass player for Bread

One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Id love to see you react to some of Paul Simon’s solo work! He wrote all of the songs (lyrics and music) for Simin and Garfunkel and Garfunkel would usually sing lead or harmonies on them.
Here is a list of a bunch of Paul Simon songs to choose from (or if you wanted to go down a Simon rabbit hole you could watch them all!)
They are in no particular order and honestly they are all equally fantastic. Any one of them could be released as a single and top the charts
So here they are :
Kodachrome - ( Super catchy guitar, melody, and just an overall happy a mood-lifting track)
Still Crazy After All These Years - (Amazingly crafted chord progressions, beautiful melody and soul crushing lyrics about “the one who got away”)
50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - (Beautifully written verses and a chorus that will get stuck in your head all day, fantastic drumming on this one too)
Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard - (just fun and catchy. It’d be very hard to find a person that wouldn’t enjoy this song)
Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes - (Beautiful African influenced harmonies and rhythm)
You Can Call Me Al - (Lyrically and musically brilliant - I would suggest watching a lyric video over the music video which is a bit distracting and takes away from the song imo)
Slip Slidin’ Away - ( catchy, melancholy but yet so relatable)
Something So Right - (One of the best love songs ever written imo)
Late in the Evening - (Rockin’ and bad ass! Also a fantastic horn section!)
Have a Good Time - (catchy, good vibes)
Father and Daughter - (this ones a tear jerker for me)
The Only Living Boy in New York - (technically a Simon & Garfunkel song but he wrote it about Art Garfunkel while he was away shooting a film. That is what the song is about and it is a beautiful tribute to friendship)
Incredible!!!!Art sings this better than anyone ❤️ All I Know is a song by him and I strongly suggest that you check it almost as good as this 😊
My favorite song ever. I’m a doctor. To me, this song is about friendship but also about being a physician. Listen to “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme.”
You will gwt much more of appreciation of this classic if you didnt pause
Talent shines.
That's Larry Knechtel on piano, Hal Blaine on drums and Joe Osborn on bass, session musicians from the famed Wrecking Crew,
I've heard several versions of this song including Elvis version and they are good but none are as Great as the original as Simon and Gatfunkel they really pull on the heart strings
You just listen to One of the most beautiful songs ever written
Simon & Garfunkel were huge in the 60s and 70s. Art Garfunkel is singing. He is the tall one with the curly hair. Paul Simon is the songwriter.
If you like The Sound of Silence you must react to Pentatonix' cover. This is the best a capella cover you will ever hear.
You need to look at who wrote the original music. Paul Simon. Art Garfunkel sings this, so angelically. Beautiful
The Boxer, America, Scarborough Fair, Homeward Bound.....some S&G suggestions.
That voice is Art Garfunkel.
Art Garfunkel singing and playing piano.
Simon's family moved to Queens, NY when he was 4.
@@sjd5750 Yes, I think they met in grade school. I hope they make up their quarrel soon, while they are both still alive.
They first started singing together when they were kids, under the name Tom & Jerry.
Simon & Garfunkel are the poets of our time. Right up there with the likes of Byron, Shelley. They should be studied in Eng Lit classes!
You need to hear Gerry and the pacemakers you'll never walk alone .
"America" is very nice too.
I'm a kiwi, but i always consider Simon & Garfunkel as quintessential Americana as you can get.
I just subscribed after I watched your reaction to The Righteous Brothers " You've lost that loving feeling." Saw another video at your site, subscribed because I like your reactions and style. So Decided to watch everything I heard you say You reacted to only to find not only are they not here, but the Righteous brothers are not either. Only could find 8 reactions. Fine, looks like you are new, but where are the ones you have done? If taking request I'd like either Carrie Underwood ft John Legend ( who wrote it for her voice) new Christmas song ( before new year) " Hallelujah " or Carrie,s Song " TheChampion" ft. Ludacris. Thanks.
Hi Ginger, thank you for your comment. There are about 25 reactions you should be able to find when you subscribe - in my videos. Please let me know if you cannot locate the, 😁
@@Hawksmere New subscriber here after this reaction. I believe you said you'd heard Disturbed do The Sound of Silence. It is a Simon and Garfunkel song...Im hoping you're aware that was a cover. PLEASE check out the original. Also check out The Boxer and Cecilia. Welcome to the rabbit hole...their discography IS huge. You really cant go wrong...you CAN jusr Google them and blindly pick any song. I've been a fan since ALMOST the beginning of their career from in the WayBack Machine in the 1970s. If you don't have some kind of an emotional reaction to this song then truat me, there really IS something wrong with your soul ok? This will always be a special song to me. Myself and my 2 brothers had a playlist put together for the day my Dad was put onto palliative care and taken off all his machines. We sat around him and sang to him all day a huge selection of his favorite songs. THIS was the last song he heard us sing before he finally passed awat and it was one of his true favorites. So it always reminds me of our special time we were able to have with him that day. Your ears have just been blessed by one of the most beautiful songs written. Listen to more of them ~you won't ever be disappointed. Peace Love and Good Music buddy! 😉❤😎🤘
