Now that my $300 Ford Probe GT is back up and running, will it survive a road trip? Today let's take this purple beast on a drive up Angeles Crest Highway to the iconic Newcomb's Ranch, where we'll check out some super rad cars that are certainly worth a lot more than my Probe. On the way, let's talk about what makes the Probe special, and find out if it really is an underrated vehicle. And of course, we need to answer the big question-will it actually make it without breaking down? Come join us and find out!

Always here for the Probe content! These were on at least one list of best handling cars back in the day. DO NOT SELL IT, PLEASE!! Many of us that no longer have one, live vicariously through your videos. Patina = Character and personality.
I had an 89, 4 cylinder Probe. Everytime I looked at it funny the transmission would blow up. In the cars defense, I was a teenager.
I had a ‘95 GT, I took care of it and it never was a problem. Not gonna lie, it was hard to work on, at least in the engine compartment. I know you probably think it’s a s-box, but gawd seeing those lines and pop ups headlights makes me so happy.
Had a 94 gt. Love the lines
I got a 93 gt ❤
Great to see the Probe FINALLY behaving! I would love to see it repainted into all its glorious, shiny purple-ness, but then you would have to keep it forever!
Once sorted out these cars are solid. I drove my 93 GT from Detroit to Eastern PA two back-to-back weekends without incident. Also, an inexpensive paint job goes a long way to really making the car stand out.
I’m glad to see the Probe again!! 🎉
You've inspired me: bought a Probe GT sight unseen, to replace the one I had when I was younger..... From IOWA and back home to MASS stopping at various cities on a victory lap - will I make it? Will it blow up? Probably not and probably yes respectively.... Mini probe meet up?
My 1990 Probe GT was so reliable. I drove it from Detroit to Phoenix and back with no issues. Including realzing the alternator belt only had 1 out of 4 ribs left... it never snapped somehow 🤣
I bought my 96 GT for $900. Once you work out the common probe bugs, they're very good cars! Several months after I got mine, I was forced out of a wildfire zone and drove this car 2000 mi w/o a single issue. Mine also had a faded laser red paint, so I sanded it down and painted it primer black. I've had people follow me into parking lots off the road to check out the car! Also had an airbag code one day. I fixed it by cleaning *every* airbag wire plug on the car (that was fun). And replaced the green airbag module with a new one.
Please Post more details on the airbag fix. Mine is flashing a code 41. My 94.
Watching this video gave me the same feeling I get every time I drive my Probe, (worried, watching every gauge, hoping nothing breaks), and I loved it! Great video man!
Got the 16V version which at times is a bit underpowerd but damn reliable. Currently at over 143k miles and it just keeps on running
Ford probe genius here, it’s throwing all those codes and has the check engine light on because she wants to go back to the 90’s! Back when friends was on, and people used to read magazines instead of staring into a light box 12 hours a day. Back when I got to second base with my then girlfriend (Ooh so provocative🥰). Take her back brother, take her back
I love the Probe as a reoccurring character on this channel :)
YES! I'm stoked to see the Purple Probe GT alive and crushing mountain roads and not overheating on you! Great vid, Ethan!
Wheels n tires! Performance tires really help on these, always ran z rated rubber on ours!
That's a keeper now
Do a less expensive paint job the same color and wet sand and polish yourself. This way it’s still a fun beater but looks amazing.
Had 2 of these over the years. Tachometer failing is caused by internal distributor failure (signal for tach comes from the distributor). It is an early sign, before the engine starts misfiring more noticably and eventually leaves you stranded (I used to keep a spare distributor and tools in the trunk for this reason). The most common airbag error on these cars is code 52 (count the short and long flashes in the gauge cluster). If it's the case, capacitors inside the airbag module have failed. Overall, a picky car with some questionable engineering, but unique in a way and fun. If not maintained religiously by prev. owners, can be a nightmare to own and a massive money-pit.
What air bag code is it throwing (2 digit number based on warning light flash). I have 3 - 97 Probes and have quite a few parts that might be able to correct.
Spent $3500.00 to finally repaint my 1985 Toyota Cressida that looked as nice as the crappy, blue Chevrolet Nova from Beverly Hills Cop.
I'm of modest means & saved up. It will never be a collector. But when that car returned, my goodness!
That Probe has the best of colors. Though "you will never get it back", it is really not about that. It is about one as the owner enjoying the sculpture as originally set up.
Anyway, something to consider. The Cressida is not frame off painted, but it is not Macco either.
The car is even more enjoyable now and i know that Probe would do the same. The key is finding the right people to work on our cars. That is the maker or breaker.💜
I'd love to see you fully restore the Probe. I've had both a 1st gen and 2nd gen gt. I miss them. You NEVER see them anymore so if you got it all painted I'd be really special in my opinion
The ignition coil/ ignitor is built Into the distributor so that might be going out. My tach wasn’t even working when I picked up a 95 probe and switched out the distributor and now it’s working. Keep it!
I love the fleet vehicle videos I hope to see more soon keep up the good work thank you I would love a fleet update!!!
Wow! Love to see it 👏
It sounded GREAT in the tunnel!!
😀😀😀😀
You should keep up. I would leave the paint alone, refresh the steering components and tires and do another video taking it up the mountain.
❤ love the probe content!!
Nice mix of cars up there, especially the Onion Redline! Looks like y'all had a great time!
Back in the 2000s I was looking for a used Probe GT but couldn't find one so ended up settling for a base Mazda mx-6 with a stick. A great little ride for around $800 bucks. Had it for a year and handed it down to my stepson. I miss it! Thanks for the video Ethan!
Wow that grand am 0:31 is nice. I realize I’m probably alone in that camp.
The Probe on BaT is now up to $4,900. Bidding ends at 2pm EST. This one is an automatic with low miles. Let’s see what it sells for. I am thinking $8,000. (The automatic will hurt the price) 🚗🚗🚗
great video-probe did well!
Love the new exhaust
Keep the Probe and then getting it painted will be worth it 😉 is cool to see one around!
Nice video 😀
Thanks :) :)
Love seeing the probe again! my 94 gt 5spd has been daily driven and my Only car for almost 30yrs, I know it like the back of my hand...They are Not reliable when they are old, thats for sure but they Are fun and highly communicative with the driver as far as road feel, steering ect and they sound Nice!... todays cars are so advanced that driver feedback is all but lost...pay attention to the check engine light, run the codes and see whats going on..the airbag light, I could have told you what it meant from the flashes but you didnt hold the camera on there long enough so I could read the flashes... Mines been flashing a code 51 for about 15 yrs..lol Keep it, enjoy it, dont over invest in it.. looks like you have the more serios issues taken care of...
I love the Ford Probe my 96 Ford Probe SE is the most reliable car I have. I'd give it a good custom paint job
I have a soft spot for the Probe. I remember seeing them on the road in the 90s and early 00s and thinking how cool they looked. Then they seemed to disappear overnight and I haven't seen one in the wild in ages. I'm glad it made it up and down the mountain without issue. I wouldn't paint it as your Probe has great character with that patina.
Excellent, finally road trip in Ford Probe without tow truck :D It sure is good looking car.
Maybe there are just bad connection somewhere for the tachometer, corroded connector, bad ground, or something like that, seems it at least tries to work for the best of it's abilities and not completely dead.
Probably good idea to read the codes to get some directions why the check engine and airbag lights are on.
Some cars show airbag light because bad connection under the seat for seatbelt tensioner, which I guess is part of the airbag system, not sure if this is the case for the Probe, but probably would be one thing to check.
It's good idea to disconnect the battery and wait something like 30 minutes before messing with airbag connectors. Better check if there's some spesific time to wait, or spesific procedure for Ford Probe airbag system in order to avoid popping the bags for no reason.
Takes me back to 1994 in college when I bought a new GT 6 spd manual…..it was a good car until 80,000 miles….paint / parking brake / engine light…
Might be the wire on the top of the distributor maybe loose
Love the car and color)) As someone wise once said, paitionce will always be rewarded))😉 id' keep the car as is, just enjoying it) 😊😊
I got my '17 Mazda6 GT 6MT partially based on how well I remember the drive in my dad's '94 Probe GT 5MT
Keep it original, find that balance of patina and being cared for, vs looking like a POS. If you can fix that clear coat without respraying, some type of cheap paint correction, then I think this Probe will only appreciate in value. Check out all the Probe auctions of late. BaT has another one listed. You have a gem. Great video👍👍👍👍
Congrats! 🎉 Finally a win with this poor car 😅
Also I’m with ya…I forgot how much I missed Upper Big Tujunga!
Even beaten up it looks nice. I think the mountain pass is just an opposite magician: cars that should work break down on it and vice versa 😂
Just drive it and enjoy it! Not worth painting it usually cheap paint dont hold up as long as factory paint and I assume you keep it outside. Its good to have a fun car that isnt perfect, you dont have to worry about it
You get one or two days when it will get ya home! Leave the paint for the next guy. Until then see if a resonator can help with drone and rasp. Also, put a hot air filter on. Get rid of the stock air box see if more induction noises works for ya... in a tunnel. I have a Magnaflow off the shelf performance muffler on mine, but I have headers and 2.5" everything, hi flow cat. I hate to say it, tires too. You'll spend a lot less than a paint job would be.
I have a 1997' Pontiac grand am se, and I got it for free from a family member. been off the road since 2013 doesn't run, so it is bit of a basket case/project.
Paint it I know you don't really want to sell it you might loose in the long run but you'll have pleasure driving it I have a black 1996 gt I enjoy driving it
God that Z4 is gorgeous
Love all your content, but I really like the Probe content. If you decide to sell it I'm in the Bay area and would buy it.
definitely interested in buying but you should honestly keep it until it dies its pretty much a unicorn
I would change the rear wiper blade first.
Haha yeah it's one of the 7,000 things on my list. I did finally fix the trunk struts after three years so there's that
Poor man's 550 Maranello. These actually did quite well in stock SCCA autocross events.
I have a 1993 GT manual and it hasn’t given me any problems whatsoever over the past 8,000 miles.
ive owned my 94gt manual for almost 30yrs , 260,000mi ... when they miles gets up there, they can start sprouting problems like a tree sprouts leaves...
I had three of these cars. 1988. 1992 and 1993 GT. I love these cars and they only canceled the production of it because it was out sell Ford Mustang and would beat the mustang V6 in a quarter mile.
Ethan, I really enjoy your channel and I love the 80's and 90's cars that you review, but I really wish that the language was cleaner. The F bombs are just not cool. And I know you bleep them out but I think you can do better. Remember, you are setting an example for your daughter. Keep up the fun car videos. Thanks 😊
Check the wires on the 3 wire plug. May just be a bad connection there.
miss the nova videos, maybe another road trip for it
Also for the drone. Add a 18” or longer resonator.
Yeah I have been thinking the same thing. :)
Don’t sell it you’ll regret it, probes are great cars miss mine so much if u get bored with it after it’s all running good turbo that beautiful v6 motor to add some hp
How do I contact you about the Probe? I had a 1994 in high school. 1996 lol I beat the crap out of it and blew a clutch and blew the motor up. I replaced the motor and then traded it a few years later. I loved that car.
Don't feel bad about your Probe being unreliable!
I bought one brand new in 1997 and assumed because it was based on a Mazda it would be reliable!
It was the most unreliable car I have ever owned and I've owned French British and Italian cars!
Thanks for the public service message. I remember the Probe and the Cougar that followed it. Had I had the money, I might have been seriously tempted to waste it on one of them.
probes look good. especially red or black to me. i think you should keep it and continue to iron out the wrinkles as you drive and regain trust in it. if it fulfills that then treat it to a new coat of maaco paint or maybe painting it yourself could make some good content. id even keep it purple, lol
I'm a fan of the purple probe, and think it would great with proper paint. Might not make dollars and sense, but it would certainly pop. Not sure what inspired that exhaust though. It its day, the GT was reasonably quick and handled well. In segment it was a very credible choice - says the guy who bought an Integra GS-R instead (though TBH, my other half kind of won that coin flip or at least put sufficient pressure on the scale)
Exhaust was inspired by the old exhaust falling off!
Let me know when the next rad car show. I want to bring my 82 Trans Am. To meet you Carlos Guzman
Keep it and paint it.
You deserve to enjoy the car now that it's running right. For at least as long as it was breaking down. Don't do what I do and spend a crap ton of money on a car, get it perfect, and then sell it immediately.
paint it mazda red soul color i think that color is perfect for Probes :)
Its could be your distributor going out if i remember right causing your rpm or mph going crazy.
The new free flowing exhaust may have fixed the overheating problem ?
Yep that's pretty much what happened!
It hurts my heart to say it, but it is not worth the expense for a repaint. Just keep driving it….maybe just spray some of that patina clear coat stuff on it?
Tough to make the call on painting or not .. 🤔
i am from Bulgaria and i aways dream to have Ford Probe got one but it was very rusty and i had to sell it this is my dream car sadly i will never own good one :) dont sell it fix it and enjoy it
Paint it! I wish that I still had my ‘92. Don’t sell t.
Worst thing you might will experience with this car are looks of sheer jealousy whereever you go. But you eventually grow over it. In the meantime Ford Probe Ganglord Numero Uno Souly Softgeld gives comfort with his multimillion dollar hit FORD FLOW (Official Music Video) [prod. by iMad Beatz] 😉😄
¡Ford Probe rules!
👽🤞 🌮 my fav probe
Ever for sale?
Later this year
I hope you sell it... To me, I got a 96 ranger and I've wanted the probe so I can have a pair of ford Mazda cars
Mystichrome ford probe
The purple color is to rad not to fix it
Hey, I'll take it if you don't want it anymore
I have an idea... RATTLE. CAN. PAINT JOB. Make it so!
ROLLER PAINT JOB!
@@donmynack Dont laugh, when i was 16, I had an old 72 datsun 240z ... rusted so bad it was falling apart.. body was orange with black primer grey primer and bondo ect.. I was so poor at the time, I got a can of white enamel paint and used a roller to do the car!
if you stood back a great distance, it looked not too bad but if you came up on it , you'd be like WTF?!!! it was hilarious!
I spray painted my 94. It looked terrific. Took my time with it. But it's not durable. Still looks terrific moving! Unfortunately it hasn't done that in awhile. It will this spring, maybe, if the crankshaft swap takes. I figure I spent about $500 in paint cans at least, primer, sand paper. Weigh that vs. seeing what Maaco could do.
If you ever think about selling the Car or scraping IT can i pleeeeease have your Spoiler and the headlights. Especilly the headlights i cant for my Life find them Here in Germany
And i'll pay extra
A loooot of extra
And its exactly my coulor
Hey there! I've put a bunch of time and $$$ into the car so it's not getting junked or scrapped. Check car-part.com and see if any US junkyards have the parts, maybe they'd ship to you?
@@HelloRoad i Love you so much for the Help🥲 you have no Idea what that means to me. I Loved that Car since i was a child BC my grandfather Had 3 of them
Euro Probes have different headlights. American ones come to a point. Euros are more square and have a filler piece on the bumper. Not sure about whether it can just be modded or whether it would be a legal issue on the road.
Get it repainted the original color
Wrap it. Can do it yourself for under a grand.
Leave the exterior alone. 90s petina looks good on it. Don't sell it.
Ethan, Here is a probing question for you. Have you tallied the money 'invested' into this $300 Probe? 🤔
Yes I don't want to talk about it 😔
@@HelloRoad I believe the applicable term is 'voluntary suspension of disbelief'. 🤣
Urge to get a purple car, rising....
seems like your is just beat to absolute crap by pervious owners and now your stuck doing 25 years if maintenance at once
Give me pride i still have my 93 gt 5 speed....🫡
never sell pls 🫶🏽
I hope you just keep it and do some fixup on the exterior. There are so few of these left on the road for a mass production car, I'd love to see one be saved.
