Man I had a 1995 PGT, it had a factory flip paint job that was light blue and purple... The car was fun to drive and after I changed the wires to hi performance ones, the spark plugs to ngks, replaced the distributor, cleaned out my injectors, replaced the gas filter and also replaced my O2 sensor and took the packing out of the catalytic converter and repacked it loosely it freed up some extra horses... It was able to spin the wheels in all gears up to 4th... The car was a blast to drive and the fastest I've ever driven it on the highway was up to 140mph... Changing the alternator is a B... The harmonic balancer went out on me in 2004 and the car eventually threw a rod back in 2006 may she rest in peace... Having said that I would love to find another one to be a project car because it was just a fun car... Good luck on playing around with it if you decide to keep it...

My escort of the same year was 600, and it's that same purple. Funny to know the name, I wonder if Knott's Berry farm could have sued FORD, They invented the boysenberry. I've put 20k on it, in a year and only needed breaks.

This really brought me back! Loved seeing the interior details again. When these were new, I recall the cupholder kind of sprung into position automatically, so you didn't have to manually drag it out like that. In the early 90s, one of the big magazines did a Long-Term Wrap-up after a year with the car, and they wrote "whoever designed this cupholder deserves to have a million cups of hot coffee spilled on them."

You do have some issues it seems. The 0-60 should be 7 seconds, quarter in 14 to 15. And most likely you have valve cover leaks. The KLDE is notorious for leaking from there especially if it is still on factory valve gaskets.
Save this thing. While Probe GT's are typically a sub $1k vehicle running and driving. They are insanely fun to drive, and are faster than all Mustang GT's of the same era. There is a ton of knowledge on the Ford Probe/Mazda Facebook page. Many of us have owned their Probes since they were new.

My best, with a good driver in the quarter did a 14.9 prior to me moding it in the early 2000's. My best prior to mods was a 15.1. The KLDE seemed to have a ton of variables that gave a lot of people PGT's and MX6's faster than stock numbers.

    • @DamnedSilly
      @DamnedSilly 4 роки тому

@@chetkelsey1447 So long as it has the 5-speed. The auto specs are way, way more sluggish. Beyond that there are two main areas for failure. The clutch and, sadly, the electronics. A lot of people burned the clutch out of those, not ready for a car where casual cornering was often more comfortable in third than second. Also, the variable timing had issues sometimes and needed a reset. Remember, this is a guy who's looking for the cup-holders the first time he get's in so a slipping clutch might not be the first thing he notices.

Just recently watched this video, i'm hooked on different stories about how people get some pretty old or nostalgic cars for super cheap. I grabbed a 95 mirage sedan for $200 running and driving perfectly, 91k miles. Lots of cosmetic issues that are getting fixed, no mechanical issues, and one little electrical gremlin that was caused by the aftermarket security system.
Gonna try to take good care of it and put a 4g63 turbo, as well as give it the Evo 1/2/3 body upgrade :D because that's what it was in japan, chassis and all.

Parts are very hard to find for major issues but the car sounds and drives beautifully. All it now needs is a paint job and window tinting and the car will be back to its prime time condition. Good job on the deal and thanks for making the video. These cars are nonexistent on the roads so it's cool to see another one exists out there.

Nice vid and great memories of my wife's first new car in 1993! I specifically recall just how liquid smooth the clutch and shifter felt. Shear heaven! The visability was outstanding and the engine was really spirited, at least for the times. The handling was strong and I liked the sound from the factory exhaust too. However, the problems with the car were constant. The rear brake calipers needed to be replaced every 6 months, the spark plug tubes would fill with oil destroying the plug wires and it ate oxygen sensors annually. Too much effort overall to keep the car beyond 7 years.

I've always wanted to own that car. When I finish my current project car, It will be a hard choice what to buy next, Japan car, Old car, or maybe get a Probe GT. So many nice cars and so little time to get and repair them all. 😅 It's hard to believe that Ford replaced this model with ZX2 and Cougar.

I had a 1993 PGT in Rio Red exterior with 5sp! Kept it for 4 years and replaced it in 2000 with a nearly new 1999 Honda Civic Si in EBP! Loved the PGT!! Hotshot headers, intake, KYB struts, Eibach springs, etc. Built up an ICE system for 1997/8 Spring Break Nationals Sound Competition in Daytona Beach. The V6 was smooth all the way up to 7000rpm, the shift linkage (short shifter installed as well) was a little notchy, but positive. Upgraded to an Exedy organic clutch. Ran Goodyear Gatorbacks to the cords then kept Dunlop DM40 directional tires till I sold it in 2000.
Maybe one day, I'll either buy a 2nd gen, or get the 1st gen with the turbo engine. My Dad actually had an 89 GL model, which was a decent "sports coupe". Cork Sport used to cater to the Probe community; unfortunately no longer.

My 07 Ion (manual trans) was making an identical clunk during direction changes. Ended up being the sway-bar bushings. They were so wore that there was a gap allowing the sway bar to "pop" up and slam against the top of the bushing. (I Realize mine is a GM and this is a Ford)
I'm doing something similar with my Ion. It's just such a fun car to drive. There's something about these late 90's early 00's 5-speeds that make them a blast for a low-budget daily driver builds. They kind of "stay out of your way" by not flooding you with needless features. Everything you need is there when you need it, and out of your way when you don't.

Hi bro, you got me as a subscriber as soon as you bought the probe! Fellow owner here, ive had my 94gt since new and can throw some light on the issues you are having....1st off, that oil smell and smoke under the hood after a drive is oil leaking from the valve covers, both front and rear..the rear cover will drip on the exhaust manifold and pipe and you will smell oil burning and see smoke at times.. the front one will drip on the damn alternator and shorten its life.. easy fix that May work for you is to GENTLY and carefully tighten the valve cover bolts just a hint more...that usually stops the leak in the front cover but the rear bolts are Under the intake manifold and cant be reached to tighten... so you gotta pull the intake ,in which case you may as well replace Both valve cover gaskets while ur at it...You may also notice the plugs are soaked in oil...thats the valve cover gaskets letting oil into the sparkplug wells.. You have obd2 which should help a Ton in fixing ur issues! Mine is obd1 and doesnt help much at all, its so damn simplistic in what it diagnoses...You probably have bad VRIS solenoids, they open the secondaries in the intake to make the engine have both torque and high rpm power..if they are out, you will loose Both lowend and topend.. the clunk Could be tierods either inner or outer..It can also be the pinch bolt is loose on the bottom of the front struts becauz mine was not that tight and i had the Same clunk when turning corners...easy fix that costs Nothing...Plug an obd2 code reader into that thing and let me know what you see for codes, i"ll be glad to help... mine is Not fast either but sounds nice... i have no codes and everything is stock...mine might be 8sec to 60 as well, I dont want to do a hard launch to get a good time becuz my clutch is original and im trying to make it last...208,000mi on mine... the other areas that go are the O2 sensors and the cats can follow.... im subbed and i;m looking forward to see the followup on ur car...I wish mine was obd2! good luck and bro, you got a killer deal at 300! i;d never sell mine for that!

I've had 3 ford probes in my younger years. I had a 92 Ford Probe, 94 Ford Probe and a 97 Ford Probe GT. I have always loved the probe . They will forever hold a special place in my heart! The 94 I had I had dropped on Eibach springs, addes 18's on spoke wheels, a big Wang... All the rage at the time in the early 2000's, headers, exhaust... again all the rage in the early 2000's to have loud fart cannons on your 4 banger, lol, repainted it Ferrari red, and finally an AEI I believe CAI, then one night got drunk at a party decided it would be fun to find a curvy road near my house and drive to fast and totaled it...I have missed that car ever since. I say, fix it and add some cheap power upgrades and new wheels and tires and enjoy the hell out of it. Rattle can it or wrap it in a nice vinyl.

My second car was a '96 Ford Probe GT in green that I purchased new from the dealership. It had the 5 speed manual in it. I loved this car. It had all of the options that most cars had at the time. The crazy thing was that it did not have cruise control. My buddy had a similar year SE probe that had cruise. It seemed like a fairly quick car and would easily do 80 mph in third gear without red lining. It's crazy that the '89 was going to replace the Foxbody Mustang, but you are exactly right. I actually had a couple of guys ask me if it was a Mustang. That emerald green paint job kind of disguised some of the curves etc on the Probe. The 2nd and final Gen like mine didn't have a turbo. The 1st gen had a 4 cylinder and 4 cylinder turbo. Another friend had the turbo version and "almost" beat a 5.0 with it. Too bad the GT didn't come with a turbo or supercharged version. Shortly after I bought mine I called the dealership, and they said they could add a supercharger believe it or not, but it was gonna be like $6000. I decided against it. LOL. You used to see these all over the place, but I haven't seen one in several months. I sold mine in 2002 or 2003. Never had any major problems other than some electrical probably due to the competition stereo that I had in it at the time. I sold it to a close friend for $2500, and he said that all he wanted was for it to get him through college. It did just that. It was starting to have a lot of problems under his ownership, but also he never would change the oil in it. It all but died, and he dumped it off to some younger guy that was wanting to fix it back up and mod it. It's probably in a junkyard somewhere now. Sad day!
