- No matter what Fallout game you play, the Maxson name will make an appearance, whether it be in a diary or holotape, in the flesh or mentioned by someone else, a name belonging to those who created and maintained one of the most influential and well known factions in Fallout. But not many people know the history of the Maxson Family, a family which starts with Roger Maxson.

I love how the Brotherhood of Steel is like a few months older than the Great War making it technically a Pre-War organization
I think it was more like a few days, according to Maxson's diary in Fallout 1.

Arthur Maxson is 20 years old during the events of fallout 4 so it makes sense that he has no heirs

Hehe Elder Scrot's hehe😂
The septims are better but maxons are more realistic. They feel human, like real people with stupid ideologies or idiotic mistakes doing their best in a post apocalyptic world.
tiber septim is not a god and should not be worshipped

“There must always be, an Elder Maxson.”
I think Arthur Maxson is deeply misunderstood by a large group of the player base. To be fair that's on BGS for the way you interact with him and the way they presented him. I found once you dive deep into this version of the BOS you see they are acheving incredible things and many of the improvements and reforms are directly from Maxson.
most of it was from Lyons actually. Maxson went backwards so the west coast bos would leave him alone. which is the only reason the outcasts came back cuz hes leading them into being like the west coast. hes also a deeply distrubed individual who thinks way too much like the Enclave for more taste. i get the hatred of super mutants but to immediately want to murder a good solider just cuz he found out they were a run away synth that didnt know and only joined the bos after scavanging for a bit (danse never took over a different Danse's life) and thought all ghouls need to be shot to be "put out of their misery". he either too dumb to know how hes getting supplies or hes okay with the bos acting like raiders. hes not as good of a person as he thinks he is. i still think the west coast killed Sarah to have easy to control Maxson put in charge. Sarah very much believed in her father's work and was too stubborn to be swayed while Maxson would do anything for a bit of praise and recognition. which makes sense for a child. Maxson is only 20 no 20 yr old should have as much power as Maxson does. hes lucky so many people in the capital wasteland loves the bos for getting rid of the enclave and the super mutants and the lone wanderer is gone and hes a Maxson or else i feel like he'd have been killed by now.
@@Kris-wo4pj that's your opinion
@@Kris-wo4pjMaxson was very conflicted about Danse. Even in the final confrontation he takes the time to talk to Danse and use his name when trying to convince him, you, and probably himself why he needs to be destroyed. Maxson is a firm believer in the BOS Codex having it memorized from a young age. But he was also mentored by Lyons BOS who had a different interpretation of it. Arthur Maxson’s BOS imo is trying to find the balance between the two. Something he will reevaluate as he gets older (if he gets older).
@@Kris-wo4pj Alexander the great was 20 when he rose to power and half a decade later he had one of the most impressive empires in all of history. hes a good leader to be so young yet respected. just because all 20 year olds cant handle positions of power, doesnt mean he cant
Not sure if It's canon, but I wanted that coat so the Maxon bloodline definitely ended

@@ConspiracyOpossum the bos is bad you realize that if you weren't in it and they ruled the wasteland that you'd be essentially trash to them right. It's a big club and you aren't in it.

I will in fact give half of the capital wastelands BOS the credit they deserve for being the good guys for a couple of decades in the 200+ years that they existed. That was a pretty kick ass time for them
What is crazy about Fallout 4 is Arthur is only 20 years old leading an entire factor of men and women. His childhood, growing up around soldiers in the Citadel very much so hardened him and made him very mature. I’d expect him to continue to lead the Brotherhood as they expand up and down the East coast. The canon ending for Fallout 4 very much could be the Minutemen ending.
that is true but do the minute men shoot down his air balloon
@@Strawss5 depends if the player made enemies with the bos or not.
When you say Minutemen ending are you referring to when all three factions live or when some like the Railroad and BOS are taken out?
@@corypowercat7277 Maybe it means letting the bos and railroad live?
@@thewendigonerd5104given the Minutemen are all about mutual presevervation I highly doubt they would make them coming into conflict with the BoS canonical.
Unless they want the BoS to become a more villainous faction and their having initiated hostility.
I really like the irony of an event of a Brotherhood Elder being brought down by a poisoned arrow. It shows that beneath the tech and steel, these are just mortal men like any other. And that incident of dying in a moment of brief vulnerability would drive the other Brotherhood members deeper into technology as a faith.
An arrow in the knee?
I would say it was also a bad idea to take out your power helmet and leaving the most vulnerable part of your body exposed while in enemy territory 😂
Arthur Maxson definitely would have worked with the minutemen after fallout 4s ending as they essentially had the same goal, as synths were definitely a threat to humanity, so I hope they keep him alive for the next fallout perhaps he might fully connect the brotherhood across the entirety of America.
Not going to happen, the railroad would attempt to cause a war between the Minutemen and BOS.
@@Alex-pj8nz Not likely since the Brotherhood either wipes them out, or they just continue helping synths until there is none left then dissolve.
His quartermaster basically tells you to steal food from local settlements. That's not going to sit well with the Minute Men.

It hurts my heart to think of lonely young Arthur and his only friend being a giant android. Only for him to be rebuked so harshly that he would carry an intense resentment towards machines into his adulthood. It explains why he was so unusually furious during the Blind Betrayal arc :(
Like a fallout version of the iron giant …
I'd like to think the canon ending to Fallout 4 is where Nate/Nora convinces Maxon to let them use the Minutemen to kill the Institute instead of "Risking Brotherhood lives". Depending on your main faction quest order, you can finish the game with the Railroad faction surviving, The Brotherhood surviving but being salty they were not the ones to assault the institute, and the Minutemen taking down the synth threat and reclaiming their reputation of the Commonwealths protectors.
This way we don't have the full fanatic BoS ending where they take out the Railroad AND mess with the Minutemen. Pretty well seems like the good ending and leaves the door open to Maxon surviving and continuing the Eastern Brotherhood in more games. We have the victimized synths surviving and going on to make their own lives instead of all being purged.
I had no idea this was an option, I haven't made a character that sided with them because their attitudes irritate me, but if I can get a more peaceful ending to things, I think I'll have to give it a go at some point.
Thank you for sharing this btw!
That's actually the ending I chose. I did save my game and checked out the Institute ending (had a soft spot for my kid and all) but my main save was with the Minuteman taking down the Institute, but doing almost the entire quest line for the BoS.
Ironically, Maxson HATE the idea of using the local
@@justnoob8141 Nate is more respected in the whole East Coast than Maxson lol and if you choose Minutemen ending while simulteanously joining BoS, you will become the Commonwealth first president and BoS cant interfere with the local politics since you are a Sentinel and Maxson respect Nate decision as well.
It all goes back to Mariposa MARIPOSA MEANS BUTTERFLY IN SPANISH, GET IT?!
The effects of Mariposa are felt throughout the entire series !
With what we've seen in the Fallout show, it seems to imply at least one of two endings is canon with the Prydwens appearance. Either an overall Brotherhood victory, or a Minuteman victory with a peaceful brotherhood outcome
I like either one of those, but it's also possible they used the plans from the Prydwen and made a second one. As mentioned in the video, the BoS had been using airships of one form or another for a long time to cross the wasteland.
@jakedunnegan I don't believe so. It shares the codename with the Prydwen and considering how long it took them to build just one I doubt they made another in such short time

So basically basically Nate was serving while Roger Maxson was
Nope. Nate was a veteran by then
Edit; Nate was canonically honorably discharged in 2074
Basically.
Do we KNOW if Arthur’s dad was the Maxson?
Because I kind of like the idea that it was his mother that was the Maxson, which to me would give a potential reason why she couldn’t go with Arthur to the Capitol Wasteland.
If SHE was the actual heir to the Maxson name maybe she was needed in the Brotherhood’s main base at Broken Hills not necessarily for an administrative purpose (the Brotherhood being a patriarchal institution at heart) but for morale purposes.

I absolutely adore Arthur Maxson. The only order I ever disobeyed was during Blind Betrayal where you are not only choosing Danses fate, but also determining Arthurs personality. Will you allow his leadership to be dynamic? Or will you cement him in being close minded or even ruthless?
i know fallout is about post war obviously but I'd quite like to have something set in pre war.
That isnt just
"run to the vault"
I found roger’s philosophy of hoarding pre war technology away from other people who would abuse like the institute or enclave justified . However after he passed away from cancer in 2135 the council of elders and other brotherhood members who were loyal to him wanted to remain isolated and distrustful of outsiders. But in my opinion I think it would be best if the brotherhood of steel in the fallout universe had open minded leaders like Veronica, Owen lyons, paladin rahmani and the mid west brotherhood from tactics should share pre war knowledge and technology to help rebuild the wasteland and for the the brotherhood to grow and expand for future generations.
No just like real life some groups be race religion for political ideology are not fit to be included in things we all can't get along and the world isn't big enough and have enough resources for everyone
The thing is that Roger Maxon's ideology wasn't that bad. It was the reclamation and preservation of technology and knowledge for the use of humanity in the future so that it wasn't lost and forgotten. He wasn't against helping other survivors and working with other groups, the issue arouse with future Maxons and the shift towards isolationism and the muddying and misinterpretation whether unintentional or intentional of the groups original goal. It went from preservation and study of technology and knowledge for a better future for humanity to preservation and protection of technology because they deemed no one else deserved it and would only cause more harm or repeat the actions of the old world.
My honest opinion is that Arthur Mason's BoS is perhaps the best lore to come out of fallout 4. The show touches on that but to truly see Maxson's brotherhood that essentially is, feels like, and acts like a state to interact with the west coast one would be hella cool.
Id love to see a video on the dlc point lookout. It was my favorite dlc in 3, i love the main quest and randomness of it.
Love your vids Synonymous, great opportunity to learn the original Fallout games
I didnt realize you had a patreon, ill be subscribing to that today. The least i can do for all the awesome content youve given us!
Thank you so much!
Excellent video!
What stood out to me about Arthur is his much harsher anti-tech stance compared to his predecessors, particularly when it came to synths. While the BOS always revered, collected and preserved technology, Arthur took the "keeping it out of the wrong hands" part more seriously, even at the cost of destroying it, and building an entire ideology around the idea that stopping dangerous technology was the BOS' main mission.
That was great! Thank you for making this. Can you do one for a deep dive into smaller factions and raider gangs? I loved the new Vegas gangs but was sad we didn’t get to explore them further and get to KNOW them. I think it would be an interesting perspective become one of them for a play through.
I personally feel the brotherhood ending is the most cannon as it would naturally have to be the railroad minutemen and the BOS because all three of those endings end the institute. The railroad, while one of my favorite fractions, is unable to fight the BOS outwardly at all and the Minutemen would honestly probably join hands with the BOS as the more "protect the people" group compared the BOS with their desire to retain technology

It's funny to think about Nate knowing Arthur's ancestor and his family and telling embarrassing stories about him that Arthur would really rather not knowing.
18:43 SPOILERS: Elder Quintus in the Fallout Series is openly dissatisfied with how the Brotherhood is currently being run and has ambitions to take over. Fallout 4 established that the west coast recognized Arthur Maxon's authority as leader of the Brotherhood, so it's probably safe to assume that his disdain is directed at Maxon himself. Maybe Quintus killed or was part of the group who killed Maxon's parents in an attempt to end the Maxon line, only to have to contend with another Maxon who is now giving him orders once again. Potential conflict we can see in Season 2.
It would be absolute shock and awe if Arthur gets assassinated! 😨

There's no doubt in my mind that the canon Fallout 4 ending is the one where the Minutemen defeat the Institute and work with the Bortherhood and the Railroad. I don't like the Railroad but they have to survive for the canon.
Incredible work as always.
I hate what they did with Author Maxson and Sarah Lions. There was potential for Author to be a great character and possible companion. As for Sarah, my head canon had her marring my Wanderer and raising Author together. I know they couldn't do that in game exactly but just forgetting or burying the Wanderer is just insulting. Author should of at least mentioned him/her!
That would've been adorable.
I'm pretty sure that's not the cannon ending now that we see the predwyn is a back in west coast
Pedwyn confirmed in the series, Elder Maxson in season 2?
Yoo is that Elder Maxon concept art in the thumbnail? That art looks way cooler to me then the hot topic army boy we got in FO4
I think it's from fallout shelter: online
It is tradition in the fallout games for the brotherhood of steel to accept outsiders but only talented ones as they don't just except anyone into their ranks like the desert rangers did and they might might also be given a suit of power armour although it would not be a better suit like the T 51 more often than not it would be the older T 45 because they liked to save the best suits for their better fighters as a lot of brotherhood members who were born into the faction considered themselves to be better than the outsiders that were recruited for their skills as It was also a tradition for a senior member of the brotherhood to send a perspective candidate on a suicide mission to prove their worth which most did not survive
Guess Maxson is still alive after the Fallout show!
Well fallout tv show at least confirmed that Maxon survived the events of fallout 4.
When? I don't recall anyone mentioning Arthur, only that the BoS sent some of their forces from The Commonwealth to California.
@@Synonymous101 because the Prydwen still stands. He may not still be alive by the time of the show, but since Maxon only dies in the endings that the Prydwen in destroyed in, it means what ever his fate, he didn’t meet it within the time period of that game.

It appears it may be canon that the Brotherhood achieved victory in the Commonwealth. A chapter, based out of what i presume is Utah, says they got new orders from The Commonwealth. Plus the airship in the show i believe is confirmed to be the Prydwen. If thats the case that likely means it was never destroyed and Arthur Maxson continues to live.
Yep, it is. You can see its name in the first scene it shows up in, which means either the brotherhood or the minutemen without making enemies with the brotherhood is canon

By 2296, the East Coast Brotherhood of Steel is easily the strongest and most dominant faction in wasteland United States. The fact that they can project their power from coast to coast with the Prydwen and reinforce western chapters makes them top dog

I just had to kill that Paladin in 76 for denying me the chance to speak with Rodger, her destroying that transmitter was the most horrifying thing I witnessed in that game since launch.
Dude for real she’s just afraid of getting in trouble for making a horrible call
Steel Dawn was a very, very, good expansion to Fallout 76 and a fantastic one in general. I initially was going to side with the Paladin and yet cracks started showing with how bad her leadership was and how she quickly tried covering everything up. I did not like Knight Shin at all at first, but he grew up on me the more we worked together and we became friends. In the end I sided with him and told him that complete isolation was bad and so don't do that and he agreed. Guy was a way better leader than the Paladin and he also was willing to accept the consequences with the High Council by telling them the truth until Paladin destroyed their communications to prevent that.
