Great info Jason I’m 68 and a comeback player.I love that Bach 5V you tested . Also like the 3 c ,7c MV. ,and the Bach artisan 1C . Bobby Shew . I’m all over the place but I guess the 7c brings back lip memory. I love your concept of Septra Tone cause the throat and cup can be customized
This clarified a few things for me. I'm not really sure what my rim size should be as always played with a lot of pressure due to the flat perfect teeth. I'm trying to get back into playing at home and Jason your videos are a great tool. Thank you Jason for providing such useful advice.
Thank you Jason for the drawings. I think Im starting to understand the rim diameter size thing better. Lynn Nickelson says most players play on diameters to big for them. I believe this to be true. I with consider this information for my next harrelson rim.
I have another video coming that will discuss the Rim diameter as it relates to inner radius. Many players will likely find this information helpful as well.
So when playing a G scale down to the low G, what is the sound of a "too small" diameter? I assume it is an airy, fuzzy sound where the power and clarity disappear. This assumes no / minimal lip manipulation to "get the low notes out". Am I right? I find I only get a big, clear low G on my Curry 1 1/4C. I guess that is my size then.
Not really. Much of the world uses the standard system, but you can easily convert numbers in a few seconds with a calculator. Regardless, the information is universal. If you have a specific question about a size, just let me know. 1 inch = 25.4 mm
@@harrelsontrumpets no disrespect or offence intended. As I said great informative presentation But perhaps giving imperial AND metric units would benefit a wider audience... I.e Europe/US/Asia... etc. You deserve a wider audience.
@@DavidKelleher-uh4es We have thousands of clients in Europe and Asia. Converting to metric is literally a 2-second process. No one wants to hear me discuss every size in every system. 👍
I do have a question re: cup specs. Spoke with someone in Stork/Vacciano. He recommended their 1.5B trumpet mouthpiece. I am a "returning" trombone player, (after 25 yrs) and now playing trumpet also. Splitting pitch with Besson bone mouthpiece but much clearer and precise with my old Denis wick. Trumpet mouthpiece is also Besson 7C. Again splitting pitch and not any consistency with tone and range.???
@@DavidKelleher-uh4es The 7C is very small, especially for a trombone player. I would recommend a 650 diameter rim/cup in the Harrelson system, which means it actually measures .650 inches. This is sometimes close to the Bach 1 size, but varies as Bach mouthpieces do not consistently measure correctly. This helped so much!!! I picked up my crappy horn I rented from my school to test this out right away!

what are the cons if playing a oversize rim mouthpiece?

SCIENCE! Thank you for breaking this down into easy to understand format.
This is great information! I’m a complete mouthpiece novice so videos like this are really good. Thanks
Amazing information! I always wanted to know how to have a more precisely idea of how much a mouthpiece it's for me or not
Hey, does anyone know the name of the excerpt in the intro? It sounds like something by Rouse or Shostakovich but i cant quite remember.
Indeed, it's the opening of the final movement from Shostakovich's 5th Symphony.
@@Raab awesome, thank you!

the tone will change in a negative way or stop entirely
Tremendo , muy bueno...
Free me from mouthpiece madness . I need a your mouthpiece so I can switch out pieces
Right on the money 💰
good afternoon
I want a 15 mm rim size because of my very thin adult lips . What number is this
I'm afraid this while very well presented was not a help to me. The rest of the planet uses metric units.
