Thank God for this video. I have 3c hair and I only wore my hair naturally for the last 12 years, wash in go air dried. My hair was full of single strand knots and tangling was a mess. I recently started putting heat on my hair, using the Rev air first then a ceramic iron. I use 370 degrees. I’m 6ft and my hair is a few inches past my waist. I don’t believe in “growth products), but I use oil on my ends and edges. With heat use, I barely have single strand knots and detangling is so much easier.
You didn't master your wash and gos, which is why you were struggling with single stand knots. You can grow your hair with wash and gos using the right techniques, products and immediately blow drying instead of air drying.
I *do* gently squeeze the plates of my flat iron to get a smoother result. However, I only flat iron at 400-410 degrees Fahrenheit and only use a ceramic flat iron. I do one slow pass on very small sections of hair and use a traditional thermal hot comb on my edges, nape, and roots for a bone straight, silky result. I have yet to suffer heat damage doing my own hair at home. I always use a heat protectant and flat iron my hair no more than twice a year. The only time I’ve suffered heat damage was in the salon. 😕 More than one stylist has *admittedly* used excessive heat on my hair rationalizing doing so because my hair wasn’t (heat) trained. Of course, my hair eventually became heat trained (damaged) and was dry, brittle, fried, and breaking off. I eventually quit the salon for good. My hair isn’t heat trained now yet I am still able to get salon straight results without exorbitant heat because of my technique and because I take my time. ❤
This was a GREAT video. You honestly had me once you (1) emphasized the importance of elasticity several times and (2) said you recommended ceramic flat irons over titanium and that you don’t go all the way up to 450. It’s way easier to get heat damage with titanium especially if you haven’t used them before. Definitely appreciate that the points in this vid weren’t surface level advice like a lot of other videos. ❤️
@@shelltalkshair I agree with Ayana, I'm not a subscriber because of what you shared! I'm curious how you feel about Protein treatments? I'm getting ready to look on your channel for a video.
Off topic but you are so gorgeous! I just found your channel because I do silk presses about every 2 weeks so it's nice to find other UA-camrs who also press their natural hair.
Back in the day our grandmothers used hair grease as a heat protectant. They kept their hair pressed always with no damage. I use grease now myself on my straight haired natural journey
I do a rollerset and bought a dryer I can sit under from Amazon. Then I use a Revlon brush blow dryer the next day and flat iron with infinite conair titanium on 455. I use two heat protectants, a olive oil spray and frizz ease keratin heat protection spray. My leave in is castor oil and moringa mane choice. I use hello hydration shampoo, scalp only, do not rub it all the way down, soap will naturally move down then deep condition (kcurlsys). I always oil my ends with rosemary and castor oil. Gamechanger for split ends.
I started doing mostly wash n go's recently, but I use K18 biweekly and focus on moisture and deep condition on alternating weeks, this has helped my hair not be so tangled.
This was really helpful! I decided to blow dry my hair and not straighten it this wash and I had to manipulate it a lot more than I thought I would. I've never heard of a texture press, but I'm definitely going to start doing that now!
I don’t use expensive products & my hair turns out so silky, shiny & lovely. I silk press my hair a lot as well & I don’t have heat damage. I get asked how my curls don’t change lol this was a great informative video thanks so much. Your beautiful w lovely hair. 👑 🤍
Hiii! Ty so much for these tips. I flat iron in Fall-Winter too and I’m sure I go overboard with heat protectants… but I’ve never had heat damage. ☺️ I don’t use expensive products either. Quality but not super expensive.
Ive been natural for 3 years now, terrified to press it lol. I only do a strand to length check but my hair has gotten so thick "untrained" that it won't go silk straight 😭 Ill try these tips ❤
Beautiful hair! I'm not a professional so I don't do silk presses a lot. I use oils that are heat protectant for the hair. Grapeseed, argan, coconut and shea butter are good heat protectant oils. I use cheap heat protectants and treatments. Not the expensive ones. Olaplex is a little on the pricey side for me. Heat protectants like Paul Mitchell,Nexus and Jane Carter are on the pricey side as well. My hair doesn't have that sleek straight look with just the heat protectant I use and it reverts back within 3 days. Grapeseed oil gives me that sleek straight look and it's light weight. My hair doesn't revert back. 350° to 400° is the highest I go when flat ironing. Very informative video! Thanks for sharing! 😊
What brand of ceramic flat iron would you recommend? Also what would you recommend for someone that is just starting off with heat training? How long would mine last?
Hello, I enjoyed the video. How are you able to moisturize flat ironed hair to keep it from being dry on the ends? Also are you clarifying & using protein each wash day as long as you're straightening it? And how often do you trim your ends? Thanks in advance.
I don't like the bone straight glued to the head look either. I use 350° (finer strands - lower nape and temple areas) to 415° (medium/thicker strands - top back, and crown areas) heat settings and that's good enough for me. I'm able to get my hair silky straight without the bone look.
Your hair is beautiful! Thank you for sharing. We have the same hair type. I cannot get it mines to grow past its current length. I get my hair blown out twice a year. During the year I wear protective styles, braids, locs, etc. thanks again for sharing.
What is the best heat/speed setting to use for a sleek blow dry? Example: high speed and high heat? or high speed/medium heat? Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I want to be a client so bad lol so you can grow my hair and I like wearing my hair straight as well but I like my curls too I would get the best of both worlds with you such a dream stylist
Your videos are so informative. What city do you do hair in? I’d love to be a client. I’m in SoCal and unfortunately there aren’t many stylist in the suburbs where I live at that are licensed cosmetologist that specializes in straight and curly natural hair that believes you can go between both and not sacrifice the integrity of the hair. When I do run across one, they either move to another state or they are so rude and full of themselves that it’s not worth the hassle. I have found a young lady who is good and licensed but she doesn’t like or use Olaplex. She feels that it’s just a rip off. She uses Kevin Murphy products. My daughter and I usually get a silk press every three months just to get trims but my daughter who’s 16 wanted it pressed more this year. So, we got it silk pressed 1 time in August , 1 time in September and 1 time in October, never putting any heat on in between. We kept it straight for a month each time by just pin curling. In November I discovered she had heat severe heat damage. One more thing, we caught COVID in July and our hair had just been shedding so much. Her edges at the temple area is all but gone. I’ve been shampooing with a clarifying followed by a moisturizing shampoo then deep conditioning with a steamer once a week or bi weekly. I’ve been just doing braid outs with rods on the end. We need to get a trim but I’m afraid to put heat on already heat damaged hair. Should I just get a blow dry and trim for her at the salon? The stylist says it’s better to get a silk press because she can see all that needs to be trimmed but I’m afraid of more damage. Any suggestions on this or how to use Olaplex to care for her heat damaged hair? Would you recommend soft locs to grow out her hair if I did them with little tension for about 3 weeks? I know it’s a lot of questions😊. I wish you were in Cali.
The olaplex mask that I showed in the video is really good. I also like design essentials rosemary mint conditioner for high porosity hair and the almond one for low porosity hair.
Hi 👋🏾 great video! Super informative! What do you think about the texture release treatment? I have been thinking about getting the treatment instead of my normal silk press but I am not sure if it will leave any long lasting damage?
From my understanding it’s mostly protein. So with that you would want to know your hair porosity first. With any treatment like this you’d want to keep up with your treatments and fully understand how to maintain it without your hair being damaged. Make sure you go to a professional and they’ll be able to teach you how to keep it healthy long term.
Hey Shell, I just found you and in record time. I really want to straighten my hair but there is no one here I trust. I don't know where to begin or what products to use. I'm tired of the curly look, but I don't want to be done with it completely. I just need a change. Where are you located? Thank you for all you do.
You can’t stop it but you can try to control it. I have a really good video on my Instagram that shows you how to prevent yourself from sweating out your silk press while working out.

What protein treatments do you recommend for low porosity hair?
I have frontal scaring aloepia so I can not use heat and straighten my hair
What do you think about oil washing?
what heat setting should i use on my titanium flat iron if i want it flat and to stay straight?
Do you recommend using a brush straightener instead of a flat iron?
If you’re looking for more of a smoother blow out look, yes but not for a silk press
Hi. I have lost my curl pattern due to using heat. Will you tell me if I can reverse this and NOT cut my hair? If so, please tell me how. Thank you.
What flat iron do u use ?
EAP ceramic iron or Babyliss
But the question is how do you maintain this if you workout regularly aka stop the sweaty scalp
You can’t stop it but you can try to control it. I have a really good video on my Instagram that shows you how to prevent yourself from sweating out your silk press while working out.
Tips for high porosity hair? I feel like my hair never holds straight
Thank you
What if a titanium iron is all i have ?
Lower heat?
How many silk presses do you get before taking a break usually?
Typically I can do about 4-6 before I take a break. I do pay close attention to my hair and let it tell me (limp or loose curls) if I need a break.
What state are you located ?💕
Wisconsin
This!! The oil causes the hair to fry and be chronically dry it doesn't even wash out with sulfate shampoos 👀
My hair definitely grew faster when it’s stretched and was heat trained ima go back
I welcome heat damage though 😅😅
