I Remade LAKITHUNDER for Super Mario Maker 3

  • Mario Maker 3 is still a long time away and we don't know for sure if we'll ever get it. That's why I started creating my own Mario Maker game in Unity! In this video we'll take a look at my attempt at rebuilding Lakithunder which originated in NSMBDS.

    I do think it'd be better if the cloud would stay permanently (or it could be an option), I mean you defeated a boss for it after all.
    Also could perhaps be better if Lakitu slows down a bit when striking lightning, so it doesn't just swoosh from one side to the other while striking lightning, as there's no room for reaction time at that moment.
    Really cool execution though, love it!

      I think that Lakithunder's Cloud should be similar to the Fire Koopa Clown Car, in that you have to charge up te lightning attack to use it, and should pretty much have the same timing as it too as it seems fairly balanced already.

    I absolutely love how you're implementing the DS bosses into the game! I grew up with NSMB DS and I'm so happy that the bosses are getting some recognition!

    I think the addition of the ridable lightning cloud is an awesome feature, and makes me wish the level creator could make the cloud never despawn like a clown car. Then you could have full levels based around it's destruction ability.

    I feel like the animation on the lightning could be sped up. The sprite animation on the lightning looks too slow in my opinion, compared to the Zappa-Mechakoopa in SMM2. Other than that, this is cool! :O

    This looks cool so far! I would recommend using Unity's built-in title set editor to make a level editor, as I noticed you don't have any actual ground blocks in your level so far. A good tutorial is Coding in Flow's "Build a 2D Platformer Game in Unity" tutorial, particularly episodes 1 and 2.

      The same thing but 1.5 times bigger and 0.8 times faster (so its actually slower but bigger in every aspect*
      Also, they should get 5 HP instead of 3, unless is a script boss like the MultiMole Tank.

    Thank you so much for putting the DS bosses in your game, please recreate them all as bosses were so scarse in Mario maker 2 and making boss fights were my favourite thing to do in that game. Keep up the good work 👏 👍👍👍😁. Your making my dream of Mario Maker 3 come true 👍 😀.

    I think next should be the giant goomba, I know it's not very interesting compared to these, but maybe it would make giant other enemies a thing aswell

    Some critisism:
    Lakithunder chucks the spinies at a diagonal angle while lakitu tosses them.
    There is also the spinning thing that the angry sun does as well.

    The fact that you needed to use jump cuts to keep your boss fight interesting should tell you everything you need to know about Lakithunder as a boss fight. It doesn't do enough swoop attacks so the battle takes way too long.

    Man, I think riding the thunder cloud is a great idea! It was cool how you also thought of doing the getting shocked effect, and like, the fact that the cloud's face changes, like a Koopa Clown Car. 🌩

    Now a question for you Smashy, about the project
    Smashy you will add a system of Custom Layouts for levels? Just like transform a Forest Layout into a Florest/Rochedous Layout with the Custom Layouts System? It can be really cool to make them to different game styles it can have on the game! (SMB, SMW, SM3DW, SMBU, etc.)

    I think he should be able to throw spinies directly at mario like n nsmbds, as it would add an extra difference between him and normal lakitus. However, maybe the two versions of the spiny throw could coexist in one package, with lakithunder choosing randomly between the two.
    Also, is the cloud selectable to place as a standalone item? it would make for some really cool level design.
    Great work as usual o the lakithunder! it's cool to see more bosses from 2d platformers that aren't the Koopalings!

    Here's a suggestion: Make an option where the maker can combine themes together. (ex. Sky + Castle = Castle in the Sky) You could also make an option to add some special effects to the level. (ex. rain, sandstorm, blizzard, wind, etc.)

    You should’ve added the glitch from the original where if you were in a blue shell and hit him twice in quick succession before he fired his first lightning bolt he’d freeze in place. And I would add a little shocked expression to him for that reference

    I absolutely love the work you are doing and get excited for every single one of these videos. If I had some criticisms for either boss, it's that hitting them seems unsatisfying. Maybe some flashing elements, or some sort of other player-character feedback could be great.

    I love the idea of being able to ride lakithunder's cloud. It really is great. There should maybe be an option though to disable the cloud from spawning after defeating lakithunder in case players just want to use the boss and don't want the cloud to break their levels

    I think the Lakithunder cloud should be permanent,as the player fought hard for his precious cloud,only for it to disappear 14 seconds later and fight again. But this is not my game so I cant change anything,but for how far youve gotten,this game is beautiful and im so excited for the release date!

    Another cool recreation! I hope you add that thunder cloud as a separate item and make it able to break bricks and hard blocks. That would open a few unique possibilities.

    What if you could place a lakithunder cloud by itself without the enemy. Think of the possibilities for levels, it would be really cool if you add that into the game if you ever release it.

    One small nitpick though: the thunder takes a long time to get from lakithunder to the ground, and i feel like lakithunder should stop when shooting lightning

    heres an idea i had that id love to see implimented: a Boss Crown. it gives anything its put on 3 hit points and extra abilities, like koopas dash in their shells, pirahna spits spike balls, dry bones throw bones no matter what style, etc. it also makes the enemy bigger automatically, and if it was already big, it makes it even BIGGER. when put on something thats already a boss, it gives them FIVE hit points and even more abilities, like bowser throws hammers, iggy walks on walls, lakithunder could have his lightning aim for the player instead of straight down, etc.

    Also i think that lakithunder’s lightning attack should be buffed a bit because right now its very weak (for example make lakithunder always move towards you when he does it so you can get hit)

    i think when the lightning strikes, the screen should get a bit darker just like in the original game, it would add a very nice touch to it

    Gonna play off what Planetkid32 said the lightning animation feels very slow and generally think a black could doesn't work as well as a more grey cloud what lightning cloud would appear like. Aside from that 2 other things are kind of wished it threw them rarely at Mario directly or the lightning bolt was zapping more in the proximity of where Mario is rather than at random in locations nowhere near Mario himself.

    I feel like the thunder cloud shouldn't despawn after defeating Lakitu. The cloud staying around makes it feel like a proper reward and gives level makers the option to build levels around the Thunder cloud. Definitely should at least be an option.
    (Also I feel obligated to mention that the fight is really cool and well implemented. Good job!)

    The key doors are great, but if you want the players to fight two or more bosses and defeat them all before continuing the level you can't. So let the key coins be put on enemies so you can do that.

    Assuming the Koopalings will be added, if there’s a world maker planned, I suggest adding more potential levels. Many people will want to incorporate both mini-bosses and the koopalings, a feat which would become very difficult with such a limited level count. Raising it from 5 to 7, or even 6, could be a total game changer for people who want to add mini-bosses in the form of the ds bosses, as well as bringing in the classic koopalings as the final challenge.

    What you could do with the thunder cloud is make it placable by itself. That way players can place the cloud in pipes making for awesome reach the goal using the cloud levels

    Here's an idea for more thwomp based enemies you could add the grrrol and mega grrrol and what would be interesting is if you reference some SMM2 enemies Like shy guy's and the shooting variant and Some Super Mario Land enemies I mean unless your plan is to only turn the semi 3d characters into 2d enemies

    This is a suggestion that would only be implemented much later, but I think it would be really cool if the super mario world game style (if it will be included) was more faithful to the physics in the original game. There's already a large community of fans who create custom mario world levels, so it would make a great tool

    I think that making the cloud spawn when he dies something that you can switch off and on a good idea for level creation and anti-cheese.
    Also mountain/cliff theme when.

    u could take some inspiration from King Lakitu from Smg2 where he has this attack where he shoots a large beam of lightning while holding it and moving towards Mario

    I think you should change the cloud shine animation to the amp particle system. Something about the shine looked wrong. The boss fight still looks epic though.

    When SMM2 first was announced, I was excited for people being able to have fully functional custom enemies and characters using asm like SMW hacks. But that sadly didn't happen.

    Instead of a cooldown for the lightning it should be a charge up just like we see in the actual boss. Press the button and it shines for a second before unleashing the lightning, and can start charging again right after.

    Idea: add 4 difficulty levels to every boss with different color schemes. Lakithunder's colors could begin as gray, where he would dive slower and throw less spinies. Then the black one would be the regular difficulty. Then his next difficulty could be a dark blue, where the spinies he throws could be in their shells instead, and he'd dive faster. Finally, a yellow difficulty where he could throw 2 spines at once, his lightning bolt could spawn electric particles that would move along the ground similar to sumo bros in nsmbu, and his dive would be even faster. I would love if you added these to the game!

    If you haven't already you should add the flame chomp. The flying ball enemies that shoots fire at you. It originally appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3.

    Question, will you make only things from the 2D games or will you implement enemies, blocks, platforms, mechanics etc. from 3D games too?

    This concept is pretty cool. amd others have their own criticisms, but one I haven't seen is this: It seems that in the original NSMBDS, the lightning spawns on Lakithunder and goes straight down from that point, while your recreation carries the entire entity along with his movement. I couldn't find any recordings online for the fight that include this attack, but if I'm wrong your included footage at least seems to show slower movement or a much faster attack overall. Either way, when the Lakithunder in your remake is moving quickly across the stage with this behaviour, it creates a nearly unavoidable and unfair attack that doesn't feel true to the original. You can see this during a moment where it hits you during the fight, covering more than half the arena with the attack.
    The solution to this would simply be between two options. If the attack in the basegame doesn't move from the spawn position at all, locking the lightning's X coordinate to where it's created, and if that's too odd visually from Lakithunder moving away from it, possibly add an extra particle on top to prevent the sprite from cutting off. If the attack does move in the basegame and I'm misinterpreting the footage, option 2 is to have the lightning still move with Lakithunder but with a percent of his movement speed, hiding the top of the attack particle and covering a smaller area. Both would make the fight still remain difficult, but become more in-line with the original and how fair it should be.

    I think the lightning should move 2-3 times faster, because in NSMBDS it moves really fast

    I have a cool idea for his cloud: Maybe in a level, you do a boss fight against him but the only way to complete the level is to use his cloud after defeat.

    How about making a Thundercloud that you can place whenever? Just like you did with empty shells being placed at will rather than making an entire set to get one empty shell.
    Also you can add options for the separate Thundercloud to last for a limited time, or forever until Mario is hit, for Thundercloud focused levels.

    Ideas:
    -Super Mario World Theme
    -Tanks and Trains (like the ones in Super Mario 3d world but 2d)
    -Super Worlds
    -Ability to choose theme and music (like in New Super Mario Bros DS where in the castle in World 2 it looks like a desert but castle music plays
    -Snakes and Giant snakes (I love trying to stay on them without falling off, also by Giant snakes I mean like the ones in New Super Mario Bros U Soda Jungle Tower, and also ones that don’t require a player to step on them to move, also found in the Soda Jungle Tower
    I love how these are just a few of my ideas, sorry if it’s too much to ask for, I know the game is in early development.

    This looks super cool. If I could make three suggestions others have not made :)
    I think the "vantablack" cloud color feels too high-contrast for Mario. Maybe a very dark gray would feel more natural for Mario. I think the charged cloud with the pulsing lightning would be black.
    I think the stun animation needs to be more pronounced. It looks like he just froze to me.
    I think there needs to be a cue whether Lakithunder's doing a hovering lightning attack or a "dashing" attack, otherwise the player can't dodge it. Maybe a brief shaking a moving backwards?
    Overall this is really excellent!

    The cloud should last longer and the laser particles should fit a bit better to the lsaer sprite. And maybe make the cloud shine if you strike a lightning, exactly like it does when the lakitu is in it.
    Edit: It's really cool, don't understand me wrong, these are only ideas. I appreciate everything you're doing :)

    Suggestion for the far future : perhaps if you ever plan to go back and add larger/mushroom versions of the bosses. Instead of just making them larger. Give them special features like the Monty mole tank having extra layers or the lakiathunder shooting out 3 bolts with 2 facing diagonally
