Thanks for this video Sophie, I'm sending it straight to my daughter. She's 15 and just started learning last month. She has three passions. Heavy metal, makeup, and clothes, possibly in that order, so I guess you will be really inspirational for her! The stuff on modal scales would be a bit advanced for her but the first half on three notes per string is great advice, as she's learning the typical "box" method now. She'll take advice from you so much more than from me, so hopefully she'll become a dedicated follower of your channel and learn lots from you. Cheers!
5.32-5.36 represents hundreds (probably thousands) of hours practice. So bear in mind newbies, it only looks easy because it’s been practiced many, many times, slowly, over years. Anyone can play this well if they’re prepared to put in the effort. Unfortunately we won’t all end up being articulate, attractive blondes. BUT, we can all become better guitarists if we’re patient and diligent. This lady displays such dedication with perfect technique and a great teaching style. Wonderful job, thank you.
It's rather astonishing being a decent guitarist and then realizing I look like a beginner compared to your talent. Something to strive for! Holy smokes!
Great Vid Sophie. Great for those at an Intermediate level who have started playing with scales and want to get from there to the end game of learning to solo with them. In relation to your comment, yes I would love to see a modal video lesson. Would love to see how you use this soloing. To others in the comments, don't let it scare you. practice the scale as she covers in the first couple of minutes, over and over, and as you get comfortable with it, you'll gain more speed and more confidence. Getting from the beginning to Sophie s skill level is not a 2 hour quest on how to learn guitar, it takes dedication and practice for a couple of years. But a little patience and you'll get there. Keep it up Sophie!, great vid!
Thanks Sophie. A door opened when I suddenly realised mixing major and minor pentatonics together was not only allowed but unlocked fretboard freedom. I know a bit about 3 notes per string and know a bit about modes but you just opened up so much more! Pity I only just found this at the end of lockdown ...grrrr!
I'm an old guy trying to learn. Thanks for showing the 3-note per string scale. This concept makes a wider scale, plus I can remember and visualize it fairly easily.
Thank you very much Sophie ! Your lesson is great and you're amazing.. the way you present the tutorial is too good ..love it ! Please continue your great work.
There is alot more to music than 64th notes my friend, and alot to be said for having the ability to actually sing, and play well simultaneously. A good musician could tug on your heart strings with a simple melody on a toy guitar with a heartfelt vocal. I got some great advice from one of the greats when I was a kid. I could play lightning fast, and thought that was the ultimate. The advice he gave me was "There's more soul and feeling in a single bend played from your heart than there is in 64th notes played from your mind".
It is hard to find a straightforward breakdown of patterns/scales that are broken down to match the way riffs work sonically. Especially fast playing. So, the fact you broke it down visually, physically and technically is one of the better teaching tools I’ve seen. Even pros skip over speed playing. The patterns and how they work are rarely explained. So having played a long time now, I have always been stuck in learning how to how to navigate scales accurately to get the texture I like while playing them clean. Well done! Thank you! If you could also go over timing, how to play in time would also be helpful.
Great video. I've always played this scale this way; never thought to skip strings like that. I'll give it a try. I've been playing for 32 years, you are way better than I am.
I'm a beginner who's practicing due to quarantine, I'd appreciate a video on how to take a scale and work it down the fretboard. I've been working off of these scales. Good video! E minor pentatonic scale C major G major E harmonic minor scale (sounds so nice)
Hey sophie! Thanks for the lesson, I've been playing guitar for 20 years and this was good i apretiate it! I think you should do more lesson videos for sure!
I feel like I just learned a lot more in this short vid than I ever did with hours upon hours of practice on my own, even the mode section made A LOT of sense and it doesn't even sound hard anymore, thank you for this ❤
Just came across this and grabbed my guitar, but you being tuned down a half-step did stump me. So I got the additional benefit of a transposing exercise. Good work, keep it up!
This is impressive. Sophie you inject a lot of feeling into your playing, even if it’s just scales. This is simply remarkable. Music is not about speed but about communicating emotion through playing an instrument. You got that part down. Keep on going. Wow.
This was really great! I think it will be really fun to practice this, it made so much more sense to me than any way I've tried to teach myself. Thank you! You rock!

Sophie - Music theory and humor combined. Now, that's almost as amazing as your guitar skills. Thanks for the technique on the fast runs. I must admit that probably half of the view count on the Living on a Prayer shred is probably due to me having it on loop; it is fantastic! ;-)
I watched your video about performance anxiety first. What impressed me about this video is that you value both the CAGED system and 3 notes per string. I would really like to see a follow up video that combines the 3 notes per string with actual notation. Position groupings are great quick improvisations without music. However, connecting fret board positions to notation allows the guitarists to sight-read which is the next level of heaven. I grew up thinking notation was scary, now I just laugh at myself (in a good way). One of these days if I ever practice enough I might post some videos. A perfect example of less is more! So expressive with just the major scale. Short video, big lesson for me.🙏🙏🙏
Excellent lesson and demonstration. And your technical ability really shines.
I’ve been playing guitar for 30 years (self-taught, no actual lessons). Why am I just now learning this 3-notes-per-string concept? 🤦🏻♂️🤯😭
Because you waited 30 years to learn it. Der
Me watching her at the beginning of the video, "Hmm, there is no way that she can play those in a faster state".. at exactly 5:19 mins of the video... I subscribed.
Great lesson Sophie! I will indeed apply what I learned here since I've been working on my scales and theory! And btw, daam, I want that guitar so bad, such a beautiful guitar
@@trisin I think it is an Aries series guitar from Kiesel. Sophie endorses it ☺️
Sophie, you combine musicality, guitars playing art and beauty. There is everything for a musical success.
Nice lesson. Great stuff. From your solos, you have a really nice melodic sense to go along with the shredding (which we all of course love).
And y’all thought she was just pretty. Pretty knowledgeable! I lost her about the D string…
Lmfao
Her G string is what I think is even more interesting...
@@bubuguaiguai LOL
This the major scale I use for everything then I will just apply the intervals to get me the modes
sweet jesus on a bike , i thought there'd be more G string jokes
My first and second finger on the g string , 3rd and 4th practicing my fingering exercise...
That was actually helpful. I tried combining the 3 notes per string with the pentatonic of the relative minor and it worked great! Thank you!
Awesome lesson Sophie! I'm just a beginner but already I can blast up the scales using your method. One thing I noticed was how this same pattern repeats no matter where I started on the low E string. Very good info, I appreciate it. Thank you for helping me get faster. Mike from Boston
