  • Disassembled and cleaned an Epson Home Cinema 3010 LCD projector. Projector worked OK, but had some image issues that were cleaning related. I find that the less you touch in an LCD projector the better. This one turned out well. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Frank, kudos for your content here, it's extremely helpful to the inexperienced projector repairer. I've had my Epson TW8100 since new, nearly 10 years on now. It's been powering our cinema setup the whole time. Single config, in same place with no change to cabling. It's been great. Yesterday, exactly half the screen started showing a blue hazy , circular hue against dark background projections and it's yellow when the projection is white background, with a very visible line down the middle to divide the half image. I changed the lamp with a spare, all the cables, tried VGA and HDMI, no dice. I'm also seeing this issue on the setup's main menu screen too (ruling out all inputs). I've reviewed other people similar problems with half-screen projected discolorations and now I'm not sure if I'm dealing with a dirt issue in the optical path, an electronics issue with the main board or optical path burnout damage of some kind to one the polarizing filters or to the LCD panels. I've got an Epson service centre nearby and ready to chicken out and take to them. They want $100 for diagnosis only. I fear that might be waste of money if the projector is toast gauging from similar comments below. Your thoughts, or anybody else, who's had a similar experience, would be very much appreciated before I go and start spending money to try and fix it. I'm happy to do so, if I'm confident it can be fixed at a reasonable price.

      Hi John, save your $100. While I wish we could save them all, the goal of my content is to inform and save folks money. You are looking at an expensive repair. Its a polarizer or prism coating failure. I have seen that circle issue so many time and the most common age of projector that I hear this with is 10 years. On average its 7-10 years. Treat yourself to a new projector. They have gotten really nice lately. If you are in the USA, there is a company in NJ called Projectorscreen.com They are incredibly helpful and have really good pricing. I am not affiliated with them at all, I just know about their reputation and have dealt with them personally.

      @@FixitFrank Thankyou !.....I'd buy you a beer, but I'm in Melbourne, Australia mate. I called my original supplier when the issue started, they're still in the cinema business. They said price and availability on a new one in Aus was 6 MONTHS or more, and maybe. All due to residual Covid supply-chain issues. Tears from the family. We're exploring the option of a new BIG LCD lounge TV (to replace the old 50" plasma) to supplement viewing needs until then. The hunt for a new proj has begun. If you (or anyone else) have an opinion on equivalent units in that class of proj. it would be much appreciated. I'll checkout projectorscreen.com.

      If I use a hand driver too long, my hands will hurt like mad for a while. I started using a drill driver maybe 15 years ago. Once you get used to them, you almost have the same 'feel' for the screws. I still use hand drivers when I have to, but I try and minimize it.

    So is this process very similar to the epson hc 4010? I look inside the lense while turned on and there is a fly inside at the very inside part of the lense and some kind of filter behind that. The layer of glass at the very end where the fly is at is kinda smudgy i think because the fly and the filter behind that is kinda hazy and or foggy i think its dirty. If i take it apart like you did in this video, will i able to clean those parts? The visual showing on the projector screen is kinda hazy. I just changed my bulb to a new one. I’ve taken apart a 100$ projector and am familiar with how to deal with this. I just want to know if it will be able to be cleaned out if i do the same thing you did. And would Cotton swabs be good enough or should i get some type of lens cleaner materials to clear off the coatings on the inner part of lenses and the filter behind that?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 місяці тому +1

      That haze is most likely a bad/failing coating. If you even touch it, it will scratch or get worse. If you put any chemicals on it, it will ruin it. If that 4010 is 7ish years old, its failing. Thats how epsons usually die. They use an organic coating that wears out and degrades and nothing you can do will repair it. It's the main reason I stopped working on epson. In my opinion they are engineered and built to fail after certain amount of time.
      Believe it or not, deionized/distilled water is the only liquid you should ever use on optics. I try not to use them all if possible. The myriad of glass fuming and sputter coatings can get destroyed pretty easily. I learned this the hard way. Photo lens brush or other soft brush is okay and sometimes microfiber if its bad. But this is only on lenses or obvious glass. Anything that is a filter or polariser should just be left alone or maybe gently puffed with air but zero physical contact. again I learned that the hard way.

    Hi Frank, thanks for all the help you provide to the community. I have an Epson 3700 with only 800 hours but out of warranty, the power light is solid blue, the status light is blinking blue non stop and I get no image. what do you think is the issue? is it worth fixing it?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 роки тому

      Hey Bob! Hope all well with you. Thank you! I hope it helps people.
      My experience with Epson is limited due to their lack of out of warranty info. However, I would check the Iris, and the cinema filter. They should be right next to each other in the front end of the optic assembly. If the gear rack of the cinema filter(I think that's its name, the glass that slides in and out of the light path) is jammed or out of time that can be an issue and the iris can also jam. That particular error code is not in the manual(as you probably saw) so I suspect it is one of those issues. I'd start there. I doubt its a fan since the temp light should flash in that situation. Lastly, you may want to try pulling error codes via the service port but I am not exactly sure how to interface with that. It might need epson software. It does offer wireless LAN, maybe there will codes listed on the web interface page.

    Hi, I bought a refurbished unit HC 3700 and noticed some hairline scratches on or inside the lens and lots of tiny dust spots through the lens assembly, strange dark spots, and a fringing in the lens. In addition the for corner focusing is not uniform. But the picture looks good. Should I send back and get a dlp, or try again with another Epson? The used Epson is almost the same cost of new DLP.

      Hi Marc, Check to see if you might have blown the coating off the final prism. that square prism that the lcd panels are mounted to, has a coating that is important. Half of my projection has a distortion that is only really seen when the screen is showing blue for the most part. I contacted a place that does projector repairs and they say it is a main board issue. I am just wondering with only directly half of the projection being an issue (possibly from many hours in one usage and switching around modes too many times the last time using before this occurred) if it's really the main board or just a loose wire or some other build up. The cost of the main board and labor is over half the price I got for this projector and I have used it for many years, so debating if worth the repair or just get a new projector or TV.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому

      Do you have a BenQ W5000? That is a known issue on those. The second DMD controller goes bad. If you have an Epson and the blue is kind of "blob" like, then it is your polarizers rather than the mainboard and in that case, sadly the projector is finished.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому

      My personal feeling is that buying used Epson's is too much of a gamble. It might be as simple as a bad connection for the flat flex cable, but it also could easily be a bad LCD panel. That is not easily replaceable. My personal opinion is that DLP projectors tend to be more reliable in the long run. They are definitely easier to repair and maintain and have less parts that wear out from age. Three-four years old and having the blue line issue is a little early in my opinion too. You may end up with more problems as the unit ages.
      If the current owner will sell it to you cheap, it might be worth re-seating the cable. Otherwise I would not buy it. A new LCD and installing the LCD properly is a nightmare without proper tooling and alignment jigs.
      If they are available in your area, I would look at Mitsubishi, NEC, Viewsonic and then BenQ and Optoma (all DLP). I say BenQ and Optoma last because they hold their value more than the other 3. I see a lot of Mitsubishi DLPs rated at 1080p for in the $200 range here in the states.

      The white part should just flip up ever so slightly. They pop up maybe 2mm? It isn't much. I have not heard of them being glued but with Epson anything is possible. Does the cable feel more loose if you lift up on the latch of the connector?

    • @FixitFrank

      Hi Kevin, I must warn you, that's a tough job. The panels are aligned in the factory and glued in place. Merely loosening the screws in the panel corner is enough to throw off the convergence of the RGB channels. Getting a blue panel is definitely an option but alignment after the fact is your hurdle. LCD projectors are a real hassle with optic problems. I don't even mess with optic problems on them.
      Your best bet is finding a used but working optical assembly. That is all three panels mounted to the prism cube. They are already aligned. You can usually just put them in and go.
      If your budget is tight ($150 for an optical assembly on average), you may want to sell the 3010' for parts and buy a used dlp projector. They tend to be way cheaper and easier to keep going.
      I wish I had more positive news but I don't want to give you false hope.

    My original Epson EH-TW5400 lamp was failing (dim screen and flickering) after just 3000h of use because I ran it on ECO from the start (first projector, didn't know that was a bad thing) and I needed a replacement, but a new $170 bulb wasn't an option for me so I ordered a $13 bulb and a $20 bulb with the module off Aliexpress.
    The one with the module turned out to be crap - it was dim, half the screen was different color and the plastic started smelling of burnt electronics.
    So I tried the other bulb - I placed it in the original module and it actually turned out great - it's much brighter than my failing bulb, doesn't flicker and the screen is pretty uniform. The only issue was that I had to change the color temperature a little in the settings but I would say that Ali lamp is around 95% as good as a new lamp.
    Unfortunately the fan started ramping up and the noise became unbearable - so I decided to clean the projector with some compressed air - big mistake. While the fan issues got fixed another problem appeared - lots and lots of magenta and blue splotches on the screen - turns out that all the dust (and there was a lot of it) got pushed inside of the projector and that's why I'm now watching this video to prepare myself for cleaning the internals of my projector :(

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому

      Go slow and take apart as little as possible. By now your LCD panel cables are becoming very brittle. They can crack with minimal pressure. When using air, turn down the pressure a whole lot. I use a regulator set at about 8psi and then it has a 25ft hose so its probably a little lower at the nozzle. Keep a vacuum running next to things and it will suck in the loose dust. If you are in the states, this is a great lamp option. www.purelandsupply.com/epson-projector-lamp_eh-tw5400.html It is around $100 and uses an Osram bulb. Of course if your lamp is running OK, then there is no need to change it at this point.

      @@FixitFrank Thanks for the info! Unfortunately the cleaning didn't go so well. The first time after cleaning the dust disappeared but instead much bigger color spots appeared all over the screen. So I opened it back up, cleaned it again, more thoroughly and put it back together. And now the projector turned on but the image was missing the green channel. After around 10 seconds though the whole image started turning green until it was completely washed out in it. So I probably did damage the LCD ribbons didn't I?
      Oh well, I was meaning to upgrade it soon anyway - lacking HDR compatibility is becoming more and more of an issue.

      @@Undy1 Oof. Maybe. The cable might also not be seated fully. Might be worth double checking.
      It's probably new PJ time. I try and stay neutral on some things but I do have a personal aversion to Epson LCD projectors. In my experience with them, they tend to fail in ways that make repair not reasonable. I don't know if its due to the lack of service info or the cost of the parts or maybe both, but I have the worst results with Epsons. To the point that I rarely will take them in to work on if its an optical issue. Electrical issues are OK for the most part (as long as its not too old) but optical issues (even cleanings) I tend to stay away from unless I am very confident in the course of action. I wonder if its intentional that Epson makes them in a way that when they fail, its not cost effective? It would be smart on their part. I can only speculate of course.
      I'd check your wires one more time. You can turn it on with the top off and try gently pressing on the cables to see if the image changes. It may confirm the failure or maybe get things working again.

      @@FixitFrank Thanks! I'll try that one last time then.
      Yeah the whole thing seems odd for me - if I was designing a projector like that I would seal the optical assembly and the LCD's entirely so that the dust wouldn't have a chance to get there in the first place!
      Are there any projectors you would recommend instead? I'm looking for something that at least supports HDR, and is ideally 4K. I probably want to stay away from DLP though. Never seen one in person, but I'm pretty sure I would see the rainbow effect because I can also see that on plasma TV's. And the price should probably be $1600 at most.
      I found Epson EH-TW7000 that matches these requirements, but maybe you know something better?

    • @FixitFrank

      @@Undy1 Depends what your budget is. The cheap epsons are not great. I hear people buy them and then are very upset at the lack of quality in the image that is advertised. You may want to try DLP though. The newer models use 6segment color wheels which tend to prevent the rainbow affect. I prefer DLP personally so LCD is not as high on my personal radar.
      If you can afford it, look at LCOS/DiLA. Sony/JVC. LCOS is better than both LCD or DLP. They are more expensive though. Worth it in my opinion(if you can afford it). I have an older JVC- DiLA RS1(up for sale actually) that has a gorgeous image. The only complaint I have is that its not very bright. In a dark room its fine but any light leakage and the image drops off quickly. Granted its an older projector but even for an older PJ, the LCOS image is fantastic.
      It's hard to recommend new projectors. Everyone has their own eye on what looks right. I would suggest checking projectorcentral.com though. They have a great set of information on the features and prices on all new units.
      I can suggest some brands. DLP: check BenQ, Optoma, Viewsonic and Acer. LCD: Panasonic, Epson, and NEC(might not have 4K). LCOS: JVC and Sony.

    • @FixitFrank

      Not a stupid at all 🙂. Unfortunately it's the projector failing pretty thoroughly. That is likely a few of the polarizers in the optic block. On average, Epsons last 7-10 years before the polarizer/prism coating/LCD panels start to go(it's an average, I've seen it earlier and later). While they are technically replaceable, the cost and time involved is stupid high. Being conservative, I'd say it needs all six polarizers and at roughly $85 a pop(if I could find them) that's well over a reasonable cost.
      Your 3010 is anywhere from 9-11 years old which puts it smack into the center of the known life span. It's nothing you did/didn't do. It's just the failure mode of an LCD projector. Not much you can do to prevent it from what I know. Sorry I don't have better news for you.

    Hi Frank, if you remember, I have a 3020e which is stuck in 3D mode. I have pulled it out again, after sitting for quite a while.
    I have tested it now, with a 3D source, and I have a nice picture in this mode. If I input a regular 2D video source, the only way I'm getting a full screen picture, if I select side by side, or top and bottom mode, in 3D mode. This way I can only see one picture from the double image. If I select top and bottom, I can see the top half of the video(I can see the top half the video source). If I select side to side, I can only see the left side video(left half of the video). Did you ever encountered this issue? If I select Auto, or 2D mode(in 3D settings), the only thing I'm getting, is a thin band at the top. If it is in side by side mode, I can see in that thin band two side by side signals. This is software issue? Hardware can affect 3D mode? I would appreciate any help, that you could offer. If you can help, maybe we should go to a forum, to continue diagnosing this issue. repairalmostanything forum.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  5 років тому

      Hi Timothy. Unfortunately Epson is one brand that I routinely have issues finding parts for. The only source I have found is used projectors to pull parts out of. Alibaba has some parts available but not a lot. In your case the red polarizer is going to be an issue. You really need to replace all of them if you replace one. They all fade close to the same rate. If you did replace only the red, getting the color purity correct will be difficult.
      If it were mine, I'd find a bad 3010 on eBay and make a good one out of the 2. You should be able to use any model that uses the same lamp. Any model that uses a ELP-LP68 (V13H010L68) will have suitable parts. It's frustrating but Epson is not very repair friendly.

      Hi Chris, That is the most unusual issue I have seen with an LCD projector. It's like the red LCD is flickering but I can't understand why it would.
      This is a non-standard problem for me. I do not have a concrete answer but I have some suggestions on where to look.
      My theory is that the LCD controller has a problem. Possibly bad solder or a failing IC. Another possibility is something in the power section(either main PSU or one of the smaller regulators on the mainboard).
      I am not sure what they should all read, but they should have a part number and that should lead you to a data sheet that will say what they should read. Finding a service manual for Epson is virtually impossible, so checking internal connections( the red lcd connector for instance) would be a good place to start and then move on to verifying voltages. I imagine you already tried a factory reset. If not, it's worth a shot.

      Hi Angel, That is probably a slipped fish-eye objective array. Not likely thelamp. The lamp is only white light. There is a set of optics after the lamp that tend to have the glue fail and then the fish eye lens moves and causes this. It might also be a lamp that slipped but I doubt it. If you flip the projector over while its on, see if the red moves. Usually the fish eye array will move when you do that. the red usually will shift is that is the part that is the problem. it is repairable.

      Good question. I wonder if it's stereo all the way to the amp chip for the built in speakers? It has a 10watt amp chip that probably has an analog input. You would need to check the signal type going into the amp IC inputs. Depending on the signal type you might get away with soldering in some wires to a pair of RCAs or 3.5mm jack. Ideally, you would want some sort of line level matching circuit between the output and the taps into input traces to the amp chip. The speakers would need to be turned off. I would even remove the amp chip or unhook its power leads to render it off. If not you would have the speakers on at the same time as the output defeating your goal.
      The main unknowns to me are the type of signal(stereo or dual mono) and the power/impedance of the signal. An Oscilloscope is a must here.
      That would be a neat project and after talking it out, it seems feasible.

      Hi! Tibimakai is a great guy. I appreciate him thinking of me. Polarizers are incredibly frustrating. Epson tends to be a black hole for easily obtained parts. I shy away from polarizers most of the time due to how much time it can take to get things aligned again. Many times, I find it's better to replace the entire optic block with a used but good piece from a projector that was hit by a power surge.
      That said, I'm surprised that a 3010 is having polarizer issues this early. It's not a new unit but they tend to run for at least seven years or maybe five if abused and it sounds like you take stellar care of it.
      Would you post a picture of what you are seeing? Even in a clean environment, they can still pull in dust. Dust can also make it seem like a polarizer. I'll check into parts cost in the meantime. There an email listed in the about page if you don't want to post a picture here.

    Hi @FixItFrank, great video! Hoping you could take a quick look a green blob I am dealing with on my Epson 1080UB: ua-cam.com/video/t177cHU-_eA/v-deo.html - I am not sure if this is stubborn dust or the light polarizer going bad.
    I just had my 11 year old Epson 1080UB projector with 1,955 hours on it professionally cleaned by the local Authorized Epson Service Center. I also had the technician install the brand new spare bulb that came with my Pro version as I noticed the original bulb had lost a noticeable amount of brightness.
    Before sending it in, the picture was getting softer on the lower half of the screen and there was a noticeable dust blob on the red LCD panel (the Netflix logo showcased that issue perfectly).
    After cleaning, the dust blob noticeable during the Netflix logo and any sky (or mostly white) scenes was gone. The picture also much sharper. And with the new bulb, WAY brighter.
    Unfortunately, I now have noticeable green dust blobs during very dark scenes (may have been there for a long time and now I can see them with the new bulb). One really bad one in particular. I brought the projector back in to the Authorized Epson Service Center and sent photos (which appear in the video I made) pointing out the artifact. The technician called and said he couldn't see the artifacts, I explained his room likely wasn't dark enough and that he should play with the focus. He went ahead and cleaned the projector again in the hopes a 2nd cleaning would fix the issue. - It did not, same artifacts.
    I am hoping to benefit from your amazing experience! Thanks for your consideration and keep up the awesome work.
