  • This is the last Epson I am planning to work on. At least until service info and parts are more available. This Epson 5040ub was the last straw.
    This PowerLite Home Cinema 5040UB came in for a failed Exhaust fan. The fan alone was $80 my cost. After replacing the fan, the projector stopped booting past the Epson startup logo. No matter what I checked, nothing could help me understand why. The only solution was to replace the mainboard at my cost. Instead of a $200 repair, this became a $350 costly reminder as to why I dislike working on Epson projectors.
    I made a real go at trying to not hate working on Epson. I really did. I am at peace with not working on Epson anymore.
    This is not to say that a working Epson is a bad projector. Just that I am unable to work on them due to how freaking awful Epson is for servicing. Hope that clears it up.

    Having my EPSON really on for 10* hours every day I must say that I really love them, AS LONG AS they work. Tried to clean the inside and I was in awe by the severe complexity of the unit. Am I getting a newer EPSON in the future? NO! DLP all the way, my BENQ is a breeze to work on unlike the EPSON. Nice work my friend, as always.

      Yeah, when they work they look great. I wont say they are bad projectors. Just bad to work on. Those DLPs are just intuitive I guess. But even NEC and Panasonic LCD are not that bad to work on. epson is just something beyond me I guess.

      I have 2 Epson and 1 DLP laser (Xiaomi) both Epson are much better like image. More Natural and much better contrast. I use the Xiaomi like TV to save time lamp, but for movies Epsons are another Planet.

      Hardcore-Watchers should prefer DLP, especially smokers. The organic LCD-displays (with surely some advantages: no rainbowing, high saturation, wider lens-shift) still have problems with color drift, dust, stains by polarizer-burnout, reduced longlivity, convergence, fly screen. The exchange of the LCD-Panels is a PITA (also for the purse ^^). Their failure is mostly an economical total damage.

      @@pinomauro2426, i owned LCDs and DLPs too, and don't see this with an ideological bias. LCDs are "sunday-devices" 🤡, while the Micromirrors are doing the dirty work on the long distance run 😎 in the living room. With a laser engine (even faster grilling LCD-Panels ^^) DLP improved contrast and (this way) shadow detail massively (D-ILA still rules, if one can afford it), in the absence or at least dramatic reduction of spill in the light path. Besides, polarizers will always swallow 50% of the energy, a problem not occuring with the filter free DLP-laser or LED-designs, making them very efficient. (i am living in Europe 🥶)
      Last but not least the enormous size of most Non-DLP-devices has a very low woman-acceptance-factor. ("This or me will have to go!" 👧 - Real freedom means loneliness! 💪)

    If these projectors (of any make) were easy to strip down and repair risk free then you would be out of a job. Your video highlights how fragile and delicate these machines can be. Technicians who know the risks involved undertake these repairs for a certain sum of money for good reason. Unfortunately, things don't work out as planned but your customer is not interested in this side of the repair story. Thanks for being so honest, making things right at your expense and showing us the down sides of your repair business. Cheers buddy and good luck house hunting in this crazy world we live in now. 👍👍😀

      Much appreciated Karl! I hate that I don't know what I did to cause this. While Im far from a doctor, I like to follow the 'do no harm' ethos of the Hippocratic oath. Somehow I did harm here. Thankfully it was only the mainboard and I wasn't on the hook for a whole projector. That would have been a real sore situation.
      Thank you also for the house wishes. I'm hoping we can get the $$ together by March. The place we are in now is a rental but we can buy it if we can lock in a mortgage. I just need some extra zeros before the period in my savings account. :)

    The last Epson to repair. I don't blame you. I've been there myself. I cleaned the 3lcd block once put it all back together and powered it up the lamp lit but no projection I spent hours to make the iris function but I failed. I hate working on any Epson projector. No spares, no service repair manuals no customer support. Simply crap. Btw, I used to stick some aluminum piece of heatsink, glue it on the chips that got hot, sometimes you can get away with it.

      You know exactly how it is. It's not worth the money to work on these. I really wanted to get comfortable with Epson, but if its not the mainboard, its weak LCD cables, cracking flat flex, wires that aren't meant to be unplugged. Its just nuts how unrepairable they make these.

    This issue kinda makes me wonder if Epson pulled some Apple shit and paired the fan to the mainboard. Wouldn't surprise me tbh. I have picked up a 2045, that the ex owner was claiming, that sometime it happens the same thing(no video signal), but as many time I have turned it on, it has video. • @liminalsunset

    The fan can actually be had for much less, but the key is to not search for a projector fan. You are looking for a "Fridge Evaporator Fan" or a "Fridge Condenser Fan". It visually looks exactly the same with the blades that stick out. The version used in fridges sometimes has green blades and can be either NMB, or Nidec. The connector will be different, but that can be adapted.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Рік тому +2

      I politely disagree(just about this fan). These fans use specific reporting methods on the status wire. I went through all possibilities. Epson is very particular. Now if you can show me the real fan for less, I would be curious to see but $72+ shipping and tax was the cheapest I could find it. I am very well versed in finding parts for all sorts of devices, not just projectors and this fan was specific for epson. Not to mention, I don't want to be adapting connectors for someone else's projector. I then lose any warranty if I cut the ends.
      epson specifically is very proprietary.
      Here is the Part # 1193255-13N-AK if you get inspired to look.

      @@FixitFrank Ah yes, I can see where you are coming from. For a professional repair, it's always best to get the OEM parts. I mostly posted this for those who might not have access to the original parts, or if the warranty is already finished. It seems that in many parts of the world, it is worth people's time to do things like adapt connectors, replace bearings in computer fans, solder wires, or even install little microcontrollers to get around proprietary locks etc, which are all things I have done before. (though I think these kinds of people would have figured out this trick by now by themselves if needed)
      The fan I was thinking of (FBA12J15) or FBA12J12M was a 25 dollar part, but as you note, it isn't a hundred percent identical. The frame itself and the blade geometry looks like it'd fit, but 0.18A 12V vs 0.28A 15V. From personal experience, the actual motor and electronics in there are probably almost the same, and the change in voltage rating probably explains the change in current. I am kind of curious how the projector detects this proprietary fan - I have never seen a computer fan that did not do a 2-pulse-per-rotation open-collector third wire. It would be interesting if the fan actually had a microcontroller inside it on the third wire, instead of a commodity fan driver IC. On closer inspection this one has a PWM line where the fridge ones don't (might just need the wire attached) but in a pinch, at least the bearings, impeller, and motor coils may be used to repair the old fan.
      I personally wouldn't fault them for using a special fan like this, just because this particular design of fan has a much better than average noise and airflow performance, which must have been important in this application. Furthermore, I'd expect that the primary driver of parts cost isn't the design of fan being special in itself in this case. 70$ is a pretty typical price for a small-ish electromechanical OEM part.

    • @liminalsunset
      @liminalsunset Рік тому

      Actually on second look, seems like the OEM one is available for about 50 dollars or so on AliExpress, which is nice to see that the price is lower now I suppose.

      As much as it pains me to say, I would not put a single dime into a failed 5040ub at this point. There are more parts that are worn or wearing out that will fail soon. Hey Frank. Thanks for the video. I have a 5 year old 5040UB that won't power on. I took it in for a repair and was told the Mainboard needed to be replaced and a new board requires a matched optics engine as well. The quote for repair was $1700. Is that accurate? Do you know if it's possible for me to order a mainboard on my own and do the replacement? If not, are you willing to reconsider your stance on Epson repair?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  10 місяців тому +1

      I don't believe the mainboard is matched to the optic block. At least in my limited experience with the 5040. The price is not too far off though. Epson is extremely anti right-to-repair. It's impossible to obtain new Epson parts unless youre an authorized Epson repair shop and they won't sell parts. The only non Epson repair center option is e-recyclers. It's hit or miss of a mainboard is available. It'll cost around $5-700 and only come with a three month warranty.
      As far as the diagnosis, I can't really say. Mainboards could cause a no power situation. It could be another issue as well. Unless you had it at an actual Epson repair center, the diagnosis might be a polite way of them saying they don't really know and they are aware of the lack of parts available.
      Part of me wants to look at it but the rest of me is reminding myself how much money I lose trying to work on Epson. With a roughly 20% repair rate(lack of parts available) it's really a bad financial decision on my part.
      Another thing for you to consider is the rest of the parts that might be bad. Namely the optics. Epson uses parts that optically degrade starting at about the five year mark. Rarely does a normally used Epson last past 7years. The polarizers and prism coatings degrade and you get color blobs on the screen. If that's a problem you are right up into the $1700+ area again. But this time with used optics that might start failing at anytime. Repairing Epson is like tossing water up the stairs. It keeps running back down.
      As much as i hate to say it. Cut your losses. Sell it for parts on eBay. I hear about a lot of 5040s with problems these days. Put your money toward something better. Buy a Sony or JVC and leave the Epson marketing hype on the floor. Epson is great at advertising and the projectors look great when they are new but they do not hold up in the long term.
      If you really want me to look at it, we might be able to work something out but I'd have to charge a 'check out fee or bench fee'. I normally give estimates for free but I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from. I wish I had better news for you. Thanks for asking though, I do appreciate it!

    It really sucks that a lot of manufacturers are now making their products very irreparable. It’s a pretty scummy tactic they use to maximise profit when the item fails and forces the user to buy a new one. I love EPSON’s design and projector menu easiness and the power on and off sound (because I don’t like silent startup) and their 4 corner keystone. I remember when I was cleaning my EB-905 and I was ultra cautious. Put it back 200% the same way, same timing, same place and I hit the power. It came on for 3 seconds. All three power, lamp the temp indicators blinked red and all fans were blasting at full power. It was doing the overheat sequence. For 2 minutes. I managed to bypass this by immediately pressing power the millisecond it turned off after the overheat sequence. It was working fine then but I had to repeat that bypass everytime I wanted to use it. Opened it again, nothing wrong. This happened 7 times and it fixed itself so I don’t know man. Weird for sure.

      That is tough. Epsons are notoriously troublesome out of warranty. There is a 6v regulator that is known to fail and a few fans that are known. I stopped repairing epsons because of the lack of parts you can get and how problematic they can be. In your case, I'd try reseating the lamp, make sure the lamp door is on and that the power cord is secure. If its still not doing anything, then I'd put that projector up on ebay and buy yourself a JVC or Sony. Epson has only declined in quality. I would never buy an epson today. I will say the image looks great when they work but they now are failing after 5 years so save your money to spend on a better brand.

Is it worth spending the money to resurrect this projector or do you think I should just move on to something newer and modern. Was the 5040UB an anomaly and all other projectors are great without such major flaws? I can see that you are not a big fan.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  9 місяців тому

      it's hard to say if they are right or not. they tend to just blame the mainboard because epson doesnt repair things. They just replace them with poorly refurbished units.
      It might be repairable if it has no response what so ever. As in there are no leds lighting up. Partial power is harder to repair than no power usually. That said, it depends on the age. epson lcd units tend to start to degrade the optics after 5 years and it is not repairable. its one of the main reasons I really dislike epson. They design these to have a finite life. They could choose to use better parts like NEC or Panasonic but they don't. I have seen 15 year old NEC projectors with thousands of hours that look fine but then I see 4 year old epsons with bad polarizers. Epson is very against right to repair. Sadly your experience is far from an anomaly. The main reason I stopped is that so many of that series and the 6030 etc all have the same failures and all have lack of parts availability dure to epsons stance against your ability to repair your own gear.
      If you can afford it, buy a Sony or JVC. They are far better in so many ways and their price is not much more than an epson. I have seen both sony and jvc projectors that were 10+ years old that worked perfectly as they did when they were new.

      Thank you very much for getting back to me about my dilemma. I might have been on the fence about sending it somewhere for repairs, but I think you have told the truth about Epson and more specifically about throwing good money after bad with a 5040UB. It's looks like I will have to bite the bullet and write off this 5040UB as a total loss. So then to move on to a replacement. I do like Sony very much but at this point I will have a budget limitation of $2500 or so. The contenders are BenQ and Optoma. Don't know much about them in terms of build quality, failure rates, strong company warranties, etc.
      Speaking of Sony, I found a 5 year old VPL-VW695ES refurb for $2500 - hard to know if that's a good deal or a disaster waiting to happen. My tendency is to buy something brand new to minimize the possibility for failure plus a mfg warranty.

      hi Ned, I know its been a few days but I wanted to weigh on the used gear/no warranty concern. It's definitely a valid concern. I don't pay much attention but only because I am confident(or foolish enough) to think I can fix it. Thats not for everyone. But I also notice that electronics tend to either fail immediately(within the first year or so) or not until they get very old or are neglected. If the Sony is a few years old, is just being replaced because of an upgrade, then I would not expect any issues to appear until it gets old. They are built much better than benq or optoma so they tend to just chug along. My vpl45ES is 6 years old and works like a charm.

      That truly makes me smile. I am not a fan of epson. but I will say when they are new, the picture is great and they work fine. Its the lack of longevity and repairability that turns me off. they are made to fail after a certain amount of time. I am convinced of that.
      If LCD looks better to you over DLP, check out Panasonic, Sanyo and NEC. Their LCDs hold up far better over time. If you can find a WUXGA Sanyo from 2012 or a panasonic WUXGA projector from 2015 on, you can't go wrong. If you dont care DLP/LCD then I like BenQ or if you can find one, Sim2 and Christie.

      @FixitFrank Thanks for the tips. Are the Sony projectors any good? Back in my bachelor days I got a Sony VPL-W400Q with a shocking sticker price in 1998; it still kinda works. But it spent some time getting work done under warranty. With a family nowadays it would be totally stupid to spend that kind of money. I just want to get something decent in the 5 to 7 hundred dollar range, which is kind of empty new, and a little uncomfortable to roll the dice used.

      I LOVE sony and JVC. You can't get a new one for under a few grand, but you can definitely find used sonys for under a $1000. you can search for "Sony SXRD projector" or "JVC DiLA projector" on eBay. www.ebay.com/itm/334966741074 for example. Any Sony or JVC 1080p projector is a good one. They are the next step up from Benq, Epson and Optoma. If you want to let me know what models you are looking at , I can weigh in on them. Even a 10 year old sony will look better than a new BenQ in my opinion.

    Thanks for the video, I'm after a different issue with this model but it helps to see what I'm going to be dealing with. I could use a second opinion though, if I'm seeing a purple bleed on the bottom of the screen with a light green bleed right after (both bands being on the lower 1/8th of the screen) am I looking at a color wheel replacement?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  10 місяців тому +1

      Unfortunately unless it is dust, that is a bad optic and unrepairable(within reason). LCD projectors don't use color wheels, they use a set of dichroic mirrors and other polarizer panels and what not to create color. what you are likely seeing is a bad polarizer or failing coating on a prism. Thats terminal as the repair costs well more than double the value of the projector. Its one of the main reasons I stopped fooling with Epson. They are truly built to not be repairable. The only other thing it might be could be internal dust. I'd have a professional clean it though as if you flex one of the LCE cables the wrong way it'll break and then the whole thing is trash.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Рік тому

      Epsons are a pain to work on plainly put. They seem to turn into Pandora's box. Open it for one problem and then 10 more appear. To clean your projector you need to use a gentle vacuum a photo cleaning brush like a lens brush and lots of patience(and some.good luck). There is also a chance that the coating used inside will flake off when you go to clean it so be aware of that (it's located on the prism in the center of the LCDs). The mantra you want to follow is less is more. I would try and vacuuming first to see if you can pull the dust out that way and then start removing things to get towards the LCDs but do not touch the LCDs and do not remove the LCDs by themselves leave the optics together if you can help it. I wish you all the best, but I would also make sure you have some money aside for a new projector. The Pandora's box thing is real and somehow Epson patented it...

      @@FixitFrank Hmm, ok. Thanks for the reply. I've seen mutliple recommendations to use compressed air to blow out the dust. I was told to just put the nozzle where the LCD ribbon cables come up through the main board. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Рік тому +1

      I'd use a vacuum. Compressed air can push dust places and also cause the flexible cables to tear from the flapping. You actually need to take the mainboard out to get the dust areas. they are all around that glass cube in the center. this is why I suggest against going inside. If those flat flex cables to the LCD panels are damaged, the projector is done. You can use low pressure compressed air(not canned air) and loosen the dust and then the vacuum will collect it. Canned air can blow too cold and cause moisture to get into places you don't want it.
      Seriously, you stand a real chance of ruining the projector. I don't say that because of a lack of skill on your part but rather epson makes these so unserviceable and after they get older the flat flex cables get very brittle and the optical coatings on the prisms can be susceptible to damage as well. Im going to go on record and tell you that this is not a good idea but I also fully support your right to give it a shot. I have a few other LCD cleaning videos, you might want to check them out. But seriously be careful. be so so careful. Good luck!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Рік тому +1

      Sadly it is dead. That is a bad polarizer assembly and likely a bad prism coating. What you are seeing is the way all epsons eventually die. Its very frustrating as that is literally the only problem but repairing it is virtually impossible unless you want to spend hundreds of dollars that you can put towards a new projector.
      However, the iris assembly, Cinema filter assembly, ballast, power supply and mainboard and fans are all worth money. I would sell it for parts if I were you. Easily worth $200-250 as it sits.

    Hey Frank! Thanks for this video. I’m having a similar issue with my Epson 5040 and wanted to see if you had any thoughts. my HDMI port 1 isn’t displaying video. I had an active hdmi cable running to it and yesterday when I turned it on… I got the Epson logo.. then a no signal. So I did some usual diagnostics. Power cycled, tested other sources, tried HDMI port 2, bypassed the receiver, etc. I noticed that the active hdmi cable was really hot. So… I thought maybe it went bad. I bought a replacement cable. Same problem. No source video. Just the Epson UI still. However…with the new cable hdmi 2 is working fine. So I’m curious if my HDMI 1 port has gone bad. Any thoughts? Appreciate your time!

      Hi Brandon, It does sound like that. If you used new cables and they worked on HDMI2, then likely hdmi 1 took a hit. Static is nasty for these. Ground loops are another issue. Make sure your projector ground and video source grounds are at the same potential. Or active HDMI cables can sometimes do this I have heard. I have not seen one do it myself but I have heard of people saying it. As much as I hate to say it, I'd just live with using HDMI 2. Repairing that would require a new mainboard and through epson itll be crazy expensive.

If you have some DC into the mainboard, check the little 8 pin regulators on the main board. Epson is a pain though. You can't buy parts unless you can find the discrete components.
