I loved this discussion. This was so good, I have nothing to add. I was nodding all throughout and only realizing I was doing it when you guys finished. I can't wait to hear more of your thoughts.
The tragedy of their relationship is that they don’t communicate or don’t know how to do it. Lestat doesn’t understand Louis’ struggles with race and vampirism because he is 1) a white guy, 2) an old guy, 3) a vampire that has been detached from humanity for a long long time. And he can afford to stay separate from society and no one will bother him, the doors are always open for him, while Louis, as you said, will always be perceived as a Black man first.
You are absolutely right when you say that Lestat fears loneliness. You are also right about Lestat and lack of family. There is a LOT of backstory that will be revealed in S3 that is related to his family.
I'm excited to watch y'alls discussions progress as more of the series gets revealed. Personally, I ended up liking Lestat by the end of the two seasons. I am very excited for the Claudia episode since she is my favorite. The point of Louis having to give up his family to receive social power was insightful and honestly is a good parallel to those who were Passe Blanc back in the day.
You guys are just so on point with these episode analysis videos ! I have very little to add since you guys are going ep by ep this is pretty great ! The writers are definitely writing Louis with the race aspect in mind, that change from the books was a welcome one and it was incorporated properly into the story imo. Rolin Jones at some point even refers to their dynamic as interracial and interspecies (because even though Louis is turned by the end of the pilot he is still much closer to his humanity than Lestat is at that point). The tragedy of these two is that the Love isnt enough in the absence of understanding. Lestat doesnt take the time to understand that Louis will need decades to see things the same way he does not to mention that will never be possible in 1910s NOLA since Louis is black. And Louis lacks the information to truly understand Lestat or empathize with him. I love that you recognize the isolation of Louis by Lestat as a way for him to deal with his own fear of abandonment.
That was such a good analysis! You brought up so many points (especially about Lestat) that it took me watching the series more than once to see, and you're picking all of it up on the first watch! Immediately subscribed and looking forward to more!
Oh 100%, Lestat is now too far removed from humanity and all that to know fledgling came off as a microagression to Louis in that moment, he just knows what's what baby vampires are called and cannot comprehend that such a word in Louis' context can come off as something completely different.
Really nice discussion I enjoyed it very much especially from a racial perspective. I cannot wait for yall to do the next episode. There's a lot of good stuff there
4:08 the word fledgling, in our world, means a baby bird. It's like bird terminology... and it's not really used outside of the context of birds in our world... But yeah, so it's essentially the sire/older vampire is calling the newborn vampires... babies. Padawan is a pretty good comparison!
Yall hitting all the points (Except racial with Lestat, I think the story is rooted in racism, just don’t know if it’s intentional from Lestat) But cycle of abuse, manipulation to keep Louis close Spot on
Making the comparison of fledgling to pandawan is inaccurate. A fledgling isn't guaranteed a teacher whereas a Pandawan is such because of their relationship to their Jedi Master. Lestat was created and immediately abandoned, he doesn't really have a point of reference on "how" to teach Louis. Lestat has abilities far beyond Louis due to one of his past exchanges. Also, keep in mind Louis is considered the most "human" of their vampire tribe. The show is introducing the race conversation so that adds a different dynamic to their relationship.
If you watch Season 2, you will learn why Lestat refrains from showing Louis everything he knows. It is about keeping control and not wanting him to leave.
To your point about Black men seeking power thru proximity to whiteness: I feel like they don’t just want the power that WM have, they also want the impunity to commit harm as well. I don’t rly think Louis’s lust for power is rooted in righteousness or liberation. I think he wants power for mostly selfish reasons and I think this is true for many Black men, especially Kanye and other celebrities. They want power AND impunity to commit harm.

Thank you for the kind words!

In terms of him saying it’s a warning and tying it back to Kanye, do y’all think this show is a warning about celebrity/fame?
If you watch Season 2, you will learn why Lestat refrains from showing Louis everything he knows. It is about keeping control and not wanting him to leave.
i lowv the reactions but im so confused on the order to watch
