It blows my mind that someone who's job it is to deliver babies thinks 2 weeks is plenty of time off. Like even if you had a relatively easy time of it physically... um... you have this whole new human to care for... and it's hugely beneficial for parents to spend lots of time with that new human early on. Not to mention that having that new human in your life completely flips "normal" upside down for you no matter how prepared you think you are. JFC. How much did your life change after having your prostate out... not that freaking much. She was nice about it, I probably would have laughed in his face before cussing him out in front of god and everyone. I don't even want kids but I'm tempted to ask my OB their opinions on how much time people should try to take off from work after having a baby. If it's anything less than 8 weeks, I'm walking straight out that door and finding a new one asap.

I changed OBs with my first kid because all he wanted to do was look, ask if I was ok, and if I had any questions. The problem was that I wasn't ok, and I had a bunch of questions. He just told me the problems were in my head, and I should read a pregnancy book. After 2 appointments I was beginning to think that it was in my head, so I asked my husband to go with me. I'd ask a question, he'd blow me off. My husband asked a question, sometimes repeating my question, or coming up with his own, he answered immediately. Needless to say, I found another Dr really quick. And yes I was having an actual problem. He just didn't want to deal with it, the new Dr had no problems with helping me through it.
The funnier thing was that the old Dr refused to cancel any of my prenatal appointments. Despite telling him that I found a new Dr that listened better, he said that I was only allowed to see him. I'm like "you're still not listening!" Needless to say I had to go to my insurance company and explain the situation because the old Dr said that he was going to charge me and my insurance for my missed appointments. They called him and set him straight on my behalf.
BTW the second Dr was wonderful. She was very kind, patient, listened, answered all of my questions. Everything you need in a great Dr. I just wish that work didn't make me move away.

It was put in place because at the time, the main way to know wether or not you were pregnant was "when was your last period ?" And the doctors knew that women on the pill who did not have a period would freak out and think the pill had failed them.

When my OBGYN was a male, he told me that I had to take the placebo pills and couldn't skip periods. He also didn't want to listen to any of my side effects from birth control, so I decided to find a new doctor because I care more about my personal health than loyalty to an insentive doctor. Once I switched to my current OB, she told me that it wasn't necessary and that if I didn't want to have a period I could continue with a new pack. This saved me from having a period during a vacation and my wedding. She also helped me deal with side effects and helping me find a different birth control with fewer side effects. Have you tried other types of birth control besides just the pill? They make ones without estrogen, you can use barrier methods, spermicide, or a really common option is a copper IUD like the one shown in the video. Those are all additional options if you are having issues with hormonal birth control. They very rarely fall out, so if that’s your main concern it’s not very likely at all. What the two independent review committees that were monitoring the safety data of the study factored into their decision to shut down the trials were things like:
      - The 320 men who participated in the study reported nearly 1,500 adverse events, of which 900 were directly attributed to the drug.
      - "The pill" statistically shows a 70% reduction in acne in women, but the injection for the men resulted in significant increases in acne for nearly 50% of the participants.
      - Side effects included injection site pain, severe acne, mood disorders (nearly 20% experienced a mood disorder), night sweats, confusion, testicular pain, erectile dysfunction (which essentially negates the entire purpose for taking the medication) and a potential risk of permanent sterilization. The rates of side effects were significantly higher than the rates of side effects for female birth control.
Given that it is solely intended as a method of birth control and has zero other benefits for the user (unlike the non-intercourse related benefits associated with "the pill"), it's a simple matter of cost/benefit analysis. It's not misogyny or sexism. The costs (adverse effects) of the medication far outweighed the benefits (reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy from unprotected sex) and the independent study safety review boards (not guys being wimps) decided to shut it down.
And your secondhand smoke argument is a false equivalence. You can't get pregnant because someone else is having sex in your general vicinity. There are no secondhand pregnancies.

But if that person doesn't take male birth control, the risks are still there, it's just someone else who bears the side effects, they could potentially harm someone else by getting them pregnant so... the weighing of side effects and the outcome of being on or off the medication... the way I view it, it kinda ends up being the same. Sure someone would rather protect themselves than someone else buuut... Yeah... I dunno if that made any sense, just my jumbled 2 cents.

I'm mostly in healthcare but worked as a piercer for some time, formally for a year ish then on the side for years after that, so I have plenty of experience observing differences that correlated across genders. What I noticed is that men would vocalize about pain or otherwise indicate that they were experiencing it far sooner/with milder stimulus than women, but women would almost invariably show far less self-control once they did indicate experiencing pain. Guys would start verbalizing right away, but would hold still through an entire procedure, whereas women would seem fine for a while at first but then suddenly yip loudly and make jumpy/jerky movements. I'd rather pierce a male any day. Sure they complained but they held still far better and obeyed instructions better as well.

Regarding the side-effects of birth control (on or off) to those taking it (male or female), the risk of being *off the medication* is pregnancy, and all of its associated risks. In the case of men, of course that risk is born by their intimate partner, but ultimately, it takes two people to make a baby - it takes two people to confer that whole host of both likely AND possible (but less likely) medical issues onto one. And if a pair of people who are planning on intercourse are not in mutual agreement that it would be acceptable if the encounter ended in pregnancy, the responsibility of preventing pregnancy should fall on both of them _equally,_ no matter what kind of relationship they have (whether they're married, dating, or engaging in a spontaneous/one-off encounter). As a man, I am sick of "pregnancy-prevention" being seen as a woman's job, and I am eager for the day when there is a pill I can take as a form of reversible birth control...even if the side-affects approach those which women deal with every month on their own forms of hormonal birth control.

John Rock, one of the scientists who developed the birth control pill in the 1950s, was a devout Catholic who was eager to earn his pill the approval of the Catholic church. He thought it might appease the Pope if the pill mimicked a woman’s natural menstrual cycle and also figured the placebo week might make it easier for Catholics to practice the rhythm method, which was the Church’s only approved form of birth control at the time. Unfortunately for Rock, the placebo week did not garner the Pope’s approval. The Catholic Church maintained its strong position against birth control, with Pope Paul VI even releasing a statement in 1968 calling birth control “intrinsically wrong.” After John Rock’s placebo campaign failed, he stopped practicing Catholicism, bitterly disappointed that the Pope had not embraced the pill, but the format of birth control pills never changed.

@@rockabillymuffin "The Birth of the Pill" by Jonathan Eig, suggests that that wasn't entirely Rock's idea. Rock was studying treatments of progesterone and estrogen to increase fertility. These tests caused symptoms similar to pregnancy, tricking some of the women into thinking that they were pregnant. Gregory Pincus recognized the contraceptive effects of Rock's tests, proposing a tweak of a break from the hormones to allow the women a period. Rock compared the proposed tweaks to be similar in fashion to the rhythm method. Pincus then presented his pill for testing on Rock's patients as a contraceptive.
From this angle, it seems that Rock recognized the final product as a happy accident, or that it was close enough to Church stances, that he hoped to bring it before the Church for secondary approval. Not that he engineered the pill for the Church's favor.

What else to do with a prenatal appointment for an uncomplicated pregnancy:
    - Prepare her for what childbirth is like, including what interventions there are and how her medical team will decide when those are necessary.
    - If she's planning on breastfeeding, talk her through what a good latch looks like.
    - Talk with her about what recovery looks like, including what her lochia will look like and how to care for a tear.
    - Talk to her about her anxieties about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting.
    - If she doesn't have any questions, talk to her about herself, her life, and her plans. Prenatal appointments are often the start of the whole feeling of, "Yeah, I love my baby, but I'm still here and I still matter. What about me?"

It still blows my mind hearing about 6 weeks of maternity leave as the default in the US (depending on circumstances maybe? not American here obvs) while I'm on month five of my year long absence. I had a super healthy pregnancy and easy, fast delivery but as good as I felt 6 weeks postpartum I couldn't imagine going back to work so soon. The first time I heard about that time-frame it sounded so surreal and dystopian.

6 weeks is standard but some places give up to 12 weeks. Usually it's not paid and often you have to have worked there a certain amount of time before they'll give that much.

My favorite, was getting into an argument with a pharmacist whom kept telling my patient that the placebo pills in her pack were necessary and that the PA I was trying to get authorized was inappropriate. The next most aggravating issue is having insurance companies deny said pa and trying to force people to have periods they don’t want or need. Misogyny in medicine grrrrr.

I wish your channel existed when I was growing up. When I had my first period my mom just told me how long it would last and gave me pads. I wish my mom would have talked more openly about these kinds of things with me growing up.

I didn't get much more information, either. When she explained how to use tampons (after being in sports for 6 years, and not allowed to use one), it was super simple, and the closest I ever got to an explanation of sex from her. Bruh.

The idea of 8-10 weeks being seen as a long time for maternity leave is mental. In the uk you get a lot linger than that! Not sure exactly how ling but i remember when teachers had maternity leave they would be gone for the majority of the year

My mom has bad hearing and she always says it’s because “she went to too many concerts as a teen” and “is old” even though she’s only 45. I keep telling her to get a hearing test and that it’s better safe than sorry but she keeps saying that she’s a social worker and works in a hospital so she knows about these things and doesn’t need one. When I keep trying to tell her she just gets angry at me because I just keep pushing (my fault). Oh yeah and she also uses Q tips deep in her ears when I tell her that she’s just pushing the earwax back and that it’s not good for her but she doesn’t listen. I could whisper next to her in the car and she wouldn’t hear me. What do I do?

It's interesting to hear you talk about the uterus/kidney/hearing link because it is something I grew up knowing but most people don't seem to know about/believe. My mother has a unicornuate uterus and 1 kidney, my sister has no uterus and 1 kidney, and my cousin is deaf in one ear and has 1 kidney.

My birth control was always 21 pills, no placebo. I'd always take a 7 day break to have my period, unless I was going on vacation or something. Having periods reassured me that I'd used my pill correctly and hadn't produced a baby accidentally during that month 😂

I never understood why moms in movies set in the US go back to work so fast until someone told me it's because they have to, or they might lose their job (I know I'm making it too short, but I'm not from the US so I don't know all the ins and outs). The reason why I was so shocked is that because here in Hungary, where we argue that public helthcare is ages behind and underfunded (even though we at least have it), after you give birth, you are entitled to have 70% percent of your original monthly wage every month for 2 YEARS. After that, you are entitled for one more year of about 175 USD monthy childcare aid (sorry for the awkward translation). And when the child becomes 3 year old, they start going to kindergarden, so the mom can go back to work pretty easily. These numbers are the normal amount, there are some factors that might increase it, and if the mother decides that they want to go back to work instead of this, either the father or one of the grandparents can apply for it instead of the mother.
This is one thing I only learned to appreciate after finding out that it doesn't work that way at all in the US.

When I used to be on birth control pills I remember being told that the placebo pills were to help people remember/for the routine of taking a pill every day, instead of needing to pay attention and keep track of what day to restart the pills

I would love if you did a video on the different kinds of malformed uteruses. I have a bicornuate uterus and I did not find out until recently when I was pregnant. I still do not know much about it. Should I have my kidneys looked at?

You should have anything looked at that you want looked at. Especially get your kidneys looked at if you've experienced pain associated with your kidneys

I have a bicornate uterus as well. I found out at my ob exam as teen because I did not like the speculum (I didn't even use tampons, so it was very uncomfortable). My ob scheduled an ultrasound to make sure everything was okay. Then they asked me to come back for a MRI. Then I had a third test done.
Finally the doctor said what was going on.

The tip about getting seen if something changes in cycle if you have an IUD is the best advice in here. I started cycling irregularly with my Mirena after 3 years. Before it and after my periods are thankfully extremely regular. The IUD was fine, but my right fallopian tube had become blocked leading to a giant hydrosalpinx (18cm) and had to be removed.
If your body does something unexpected get yourselves checked out!

If you're pregnant with a female fetus, can a uterine anomaly (and possible corresponding kidney anomaly) be diagnosed during an ultrasound before the baby is born?

    • @Asharra12
      @Asharra12 3 роки тому +19

The kidney one definitely can, as they looked at my daughters kidneys at her 20 week morphology scan. They can't diagnose everything, so not sure about the uterus, but they definitely check that both kidneys have developed properly.
