Great review. I’ve got the Ronhill mountain shakedry. Also expensive but like you’ve said never totally waterproof. But it’s the best one I’ve had. Looking at the weather for the Thames towpath 100 you’ll need this jacket! 😂See you on the start line! 👍
Thank James! We most definitely DID need our jackets on the Thames Path didn't we?!! haha
Worst running jacket that I owned was the OMM Kamleika the stretch fabric soaked up the rain like a sponge and would stick to my skin. It was replaced with the Montane Minimus jacket and it is grate. I wish Montane would place a zip between the cuff and elbow part of sleeve so that water from condensation can drain away whilst running.
Yes I've had both the OMM and the Montane Minimus. I got on ok with both of them but neither is perfect and you can certainly get wet in either depending on how much you sweat and/or how torrential the rain is!
I think the demonstration of sweat pouring out of the sleeves was my favourite bit 😂 Looks like a great jacket if you have a bigger budget 👍🏻🏃♂️
And that was all REAL sweat!! Honest!!
I've had the Kamleika jacket for two years and I never realised those velcro cuffs are thumb loops. I thought it was to adjust the cuff. Did wonder why they seemed a bit long though! 🤦♂😂
I'm in the market for a lighter weight w.proof jacket, as my OMM Halo failed in the pockets and was returned. One thing I absolutely must have though are the clips that allow the jacket to be undone but still stay together. I didn't realise how much I wanted that until I had jackets without it!
Yes one of my OMM Kamleika jackets had a pocket that failed. The zipper came away from the material so it was always open.
There are some amazing running jackets out there for a lot less than £300.00. I have run through the winter in a Ron Hill x Mountain Equipment jacket which is brilliant. I would highly recommend.
Definitely. I think it's a lot of money for a jacket and I'm not convinced it's worth it. But I went for it in the hope that I'll say it was worth it eventually!!
Great review as usual. I was looking at this and its big brother. Still can’t decide 😂 I'd love for them to fit pit zips.
Yea I think they are really trying to sell the breathability of it almost over and above the waterproof...ness of it.
I have the Mountain Equipment Firefly jacket. Same goretex material, similar features and construction, not quite as spicy price.
Thanks Ash. Yea, as I just said in the comment above, I really think they are marketing this as the top of the range in terms of breathability. Plenty of other jackets for less money with similar features other than the breathability.
@@FilmMyRun the Goretex Active 2.0 is the same material in both the Mountain Equipment and Montane jacket as far as I can tell. It's a new material that Goretex seem to be pushing since Goretex Shakedry has been abandoned due to the environmental concerns. Very few jackets have been released with the material so far as it's so new to market. Goretex Active 2.0 is 28000mm hydrostatic head and breathability RET
Good review as always, but way out of my price range
Yes there's no doubt it's expensive. There are numerous cheaper jackets which are almost if not as good.
I can see a slight issue with the elasticated wrists, considering that they're not adjustable and women with tiny wrists will have to put up with the gap through which water can get in. Also, Montane should have thought about making a loop on the top of the hood or on the sides for cinching the loop in, to protect the hood against coming off. They could have done better for £300 price tag.
The hood is honestly great. There are elastic pulls on the sides as well as the back. It won’t come off.
Thanks for the reassurance. When spending this much, I really expect a great product. I had some issues with Kamleika (similar to the ones described by you + weight when the jacket is soaked) and I'm on a search for something better. As always, great, detailed video!
Elasticated wrists are a no-no in any mountain jacket. They need to be velcro ties...
@@joggermac yes I agree. It’s the major downfall of the jacket.
I have two salomon bonatti waterproof jackets. The first one had been wore for more than 4 years and the inner layer of the jacket was slowly falling off. But still, I really like that jacket in terms of the price and performance, therefore I bought the second one.
BTW, does anyone has a suggestion for waterproof glues and waterproof trousers? It is really a pain to select these two pieces of equipment which are on the mandatory kit list. Thanks in advance :)
I use the Montane Prism gloves. The old version was not waterproof but the newer version is.
@@FilmMyRun I have completed the UTS 100km yesterday (30:25 hours)😁What a challenging course!
I just brought the OMM Kamleika as your always wearing it lmao, thought to myself you have been in all weathers with this jacket so why not give it ago, i like the material and the fact its made from the wettest place in England the Lake District it must be decent, i did sweat a fair bit in it but to be honest what waterproof jacket dont you sweat in ?
Hoping for a downpour the next couple of days to give it a decent run out.
Too rich for my wallet.
There's no doubting it's expensive and not for everyone. There are plenty decent alternatives out there which will do almost as well.
The hood has been cut back too much at the sides for mountain use. It didn't look like it stayed on your head that well in high wind.
it has inside adjustment on the sides. similar to the loops we used to have on the outside font he spine version. not sure why Stephen didn't show them. I was confused before someone showed me
Yea thanks for that Jon, just missed those side pulls out of the video but they are there and the hood didn't fly off my head once!
@@FilmMyRun its actually pretty cool. I had to message someone from montane about it as they didnt make it clear on the product page.
