I lived directly across the street from the Sauer Castle at 936 Shawnee Rd from 1985 to 2002. Me or any of my family members never saw any ghost, no hauntings in or around the Sauer Castle, that was and is a myth (only stories).
Mr Berry lived in the Castle for many years and he said he had never experienced seeing any ghost. All he had experienced was vandalizers; that would continually damage the property. When Mr Berry died, his brother had an auction and sold all he could from the castle. Individuals came from all over the US and other countries. Individuals came wanting to use our phone to call their backers. People offered to pay to park on our lawn and my husband wouldn't have it. lol
The lady we purchased our home from was in her late 70's, she told us of growing up across the street from the Castle. She said she remembered when it was still owned by some of the original Sauer family; she told us of experiencing large parties on the Castle lawn. She also said they would have opera singers perform from one of the second floor balconies for entertainment.

I'm a bit late to comment lol, but this castle is also an ancestral building for me. Anton Sauer is my 5th great grandfather, and my current grandma still carries the Sauer name. It would honestly be a dream to visit this castle one day but it would be a bit of a mission to get there considering I live in another country. A shame the owner isn't doing anything to repair it.

I drove by it today and it's covered up on three sides by scaffolding. Also lots of macherery around the castle and tons of building materials scattered around the castle. And the new owners apparently live in the house just next to the castle within the fence, because the gate was open and there were 2 cars in the driveway of that house and it appeared to be lived in. I've grew up in Kansas City and have seen this property in various states of disrepair over the last 30 or so years... I am SO INCREDIBLY happy to see that there are finally some steps being taken to preserve this rich piece of Kansas City history, and US history for that matter considering this is one of the first private homes to have indoor plumbing in the whole country!

I would LOVE to see pics of the wine cellar built in to the side of the cliff behind the home! I just realized recently that it even existed, and I bet it's pretty amazing too. Anton Sauer was certainly a man who liked and could easily afford the finer things in life.

The guy giving the tour is the present owner, Carl Lopp. He comes off as such a pompous ass. Saying the old glass is warped because its a liquid? Silly. Old glass came from the manufacturer like that because when it was molten and poured the glass was not completely level when hardened. Anyways, I don't know how he cannot feel such shame for allowing that house to become so derelict. Let's face it, it is not going to now suddenly get renovated. Its decaying to the point of no return. It will eventually fall in on itself, as the back area already has, before he does a damn thing. Shameful.

There's many other beautiful buildings around KC that have met same fate. Unfortunately this building is in a not so fantastic area. If it was located somewhere like Johnson County or even Leavenworth County it probably would've been wrestled away from owner & restored. If the owner owes so much in taxes, HOW can it not be taken away? Or perhaps the owner has been paying the taxes?

They tried. You can look up but this jist of it is: "Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., attempted to wrest control of Sauer Castle from him.
Back then, local governments in Kansas had the power to take private property for private purposes if a case could be made that it was for the betterment of the community.
A private developer had wanted to restore the castle and add new housing units on 44 surrounding acres owned by Lopp and others. A tax-increment financing district was proposed to underwrite the $7 million redevelopment project.
But after neighbors objected to the big project and put their trust in Lopp to restore the castle, that project fell through.
Since that time, the power of local governments in Kansas to take private property for private purposes has been severely limited.
No longer can Kansas municipalities force private owners to sell their land for anything other than public purposes, such as building a road.

  • @armanflint
    @armanflint 4 роки тому +8

The tour guide is actually correct, but what he meant to say was that, glass is an "amorphic solid." Glass in a window sill will eventually become thicker at the bottom of the pane because of years of gravity naturally slumping the glass. You could probably pull empirical data with the use a micrometer to measure the thickness of the top, center, and bottom of the glazing.
I'm thinking that this house isn't being repaired or restored, because the owner probably feels violated every time he visits the site. He made mention of a care taker that sold off all the possessions in the home... and, then the constant discoveries of things that are vandalized, or missing out of the house. The discovery of pissant pilferings of personal things that have sentimental value, it just takes a toll on the motivation of moving forward with 'fixing.' I'm sure that there are other factors, but the culmination of theft and vandalism are enough to halt progress on a lot of projects.
If I were the home owner, and I desired the complete preservation of the home, but had no intentions of ever living there, or selling the property, (Emphasis on selling... neighboring low income rental properties are a real drag on real estate values) I would probably consider donating the entire property to a place like KCAI, KU, UMKC... Universities are more likely to utilize the space as an auxiliary campus, and the preservation of the structure could be realized. The structure would be preserved and could be utilized like a library, or campus coffee shop, with offices for security, faculty, faculty in residence...
Thank you to the baby toting videographer!
I've always wanted to tour that incredible home.
    Now, I'm content.

It's nice to see the inside of this place. All I've ever seen is drone footage at window level. I've been hearing for the past 20 years that Carl is going to restore it, etc and even in this video he is talking about turning a room into a bedroom suite upstairs. Sadly I don't think this will ever happen. I'm sure there are people who would love to buy this and do a proper restore that it deserves. The Vaile Mansion has been doing tours for decades, and I think even now they are allowing paranormal investigations. Even if Sauer Castle is not haunted, it definitely has had a reputation for it as long as I have heard about the place. I have stayed overnights at quite a few places like this where you can stay the night, do investigations or whatever. Lemp Mansion, Belvoir Winery, and Villisca Axe Murder House come to mind. If you don't stay for the paranormal side of things, you are at least staying at a really cool location with tons of history.
I don't know why this guy doesn't just sell it. Make it a nice bed and breakfast like Lemp Mansion. Charge for tours and overnights with a few rooms to sleep in. Charging a couple hundred bucks a pop for an overnight stay could also help with maintenance costs. This place could be a goldmine since nobody can get in to investigate.

It's not everyday a house like that is passed on from generation to generation. From what I understand sounds like your "Second Cousin" is holding on to it but won't restore it for whatever reason. You being related and a descendant as well could take him to court and fight him on it maybe get his name removed so it an be restored. This house deserves to be fought for, if it was my family home, I'd do everything in my power to make sure it was restored and honored. Please fight for this not for the community or the City but for your family!

I completely agree with you but if your going to press the restoration you need to financially back up your family claim.

Than Why isn't Mr. Carl Lopp Doing something to preserve this Beautiful Home. Because I understand he has the $$ to do so. I've lived in the area all my life and right now this house looks like its ready for demo. What a Waste! Btw the top lookout (where you all were standing) the door is standing wide open for all the weather elements to damage the inside of house. Maybe you should be firing the "caretaker" and getting someone Who actually Cares what happen to the Castle, before its too late. Oh and it would be Helpful if Anton P. Sauer's Family actually took interest in restoring this Home, before the city decides its an eyesore and needs to be demoed.

shari fuller You are not being fair to this gentleman. He has stated the issues with this house and the current owner and how he and the rest of the family disagrees with what the cousin ISN'T doing and reasons why. Just because he is a cousin doesn't mean he can get anything done about it, nor does it mean he is responsible. I have no doubt efforts have been made. This is the kind of thing that tears families apart and it sure sounds like the owner does NOT CARE.

This was always a place we would drive by and take photos (from the outside). It's a shame that it's gone to hell that bad. It really is a gorgeous property. My question is, how did the owner not know the caregiver was selling stuff out of the house? Was he not stopping by and checking in on him and/or the house?
Also, to the owner, it's said that the first owner hung himself, his wife later committed suicide and one of their children drowned in a pool on the property. Any truth to any of that?

The original owner died of tuberculosis, his wife died of natural causes, they had an infant die shortly after birth (common for that time). Another daughter inherited the property, her husband committed suicide after a long depression (very sad) and then a pool was built, in which her daughter (granddaughter of the original owner) accidentally drowned. Considering the things that just happen over the course of generations, all of this is normal.

Carl Lopp, current owner and distant relative, comes up with back taxes, excuses and lies to keep anyone from taking any action regarding the deterioration at the last minute while it continues to deteriorate until yesterday. That place has been in disrepair for my whole life. I remember when we were teens, 40 some years ago, and we would drive by that place to scare ourselves. At night, there is NO place creepier in Kansas City. The surrounding neighborhood is fairly typical to where I grew up in KCK. I would guess it would take well over a million to get that place to be habitable; and no matter how much money you put into it, I would think it would be difficult to get your money back out of it. Probably better to just level it and turn the grounds into a nice park. I hope my comment doesn't make anyone mad. But come on, enough is enough already.

What pushed me over the edge and I had to finally stop the video was saying this was the first house in America to have indoor plumbing in a bathroom. Absolutely false. Even the White House had indoor plumbing and toilets by 1833.
