As a storm chaser, I've been to every one of these towns, and multiple times... I can say for a fact Topeka is the only one I get sketched out in, and avoid it most of the time... Traffic during rush hour here can be straight up crazy on certain roads. I almost get in wrecks here on a regular basis.
At 8:25 into video you are showing Independence, KS, while showing news from Independence, MO... Yes the Missouri Independence is straight up crazy. Independence, KS prolly not so much.
Nick. Spot on. Kansas was at one time mainly farms. Now, a few large farms and the towns get older and older. Look at the homes in the video. I've spent time in all these places and you have it right.
Maybe it's poverty? Most of these places have a poverty rate of at least 20%, whereas the suburb of Overland Park has a poverty rate of 3%. It's possible that when you go to a suburb full of mansions, people lack the incentive to break into cars in the middle of the night.
I live in Wichita, born and raised here, and it’s actually not too dangerous of a city, especially compared to places like Chicago or NYC. It’s also very specific to where in the city. The north of town, and especially north-east is like the calmest and safest part of town, while Hillside is known as “the hood” part of town for lack of a better term

Craziest bar fight I’ve seen happened in Pittsburgh, Ks. Broken teeth, teeth through lips, broken fingers, broken toes and ankles. Some one had a class ring on and hit really hard. He left split/torn skin on people faces and necks. It lasted almost five minutes and migrated down the block. I never went back to South East Kansas ever again.

Born and raised in Southwestern Kansas and have lived many places in the country. even traveled around the world a bit. One of the safest places in general has always been Kansas. Not that we don't have our problems here, but I feel safer on any street in Kansas then I do in LA, Boston, Jacksonville Fl, NYC, DC and even Dubai. Been on the streets of those cities as well. Your video is entertaining and even got a chuckle out of me but incorrect on many aspects.
My tools were stolen from my truck in Iola once. I was a corrections officer at the time, and my neighbor (a city police officer) had some money stolen by the same person. They found the guy with some of the stuff on him and he was arrested. He bonded out of jail a few days later then proceeded to go home and overdose on meth.
I was raised in Wichita have lived in several other states but always came back to ks. I finally moved from Wichita to Lincoln then to Wilson. You never talked about the beauty of Kansas it is TrueType ‘gods’ country! Beautiful hills , lakes, ponds and trees. The grains of wheat, milo and corn. For most part it’s pretty quiet here and very pretty and I’m 45 minutes from great bend!
You're so right Patty! Thats what I have tried to explain to many in this thread of my original comment. There truly are some beautiful areas and it's definitely NOT FLAT--except in western Kansas.
Moved to Wichita in 1973. Our neighborhood used to be family friendly. Can't really think of seeing the police when I was younger. However....in the last 3 years we have had a murder-suicide, 3 drive by shootings, a/c stolen, cars broken into (stealing mostly change, but going through everything). All in the same 2 blocks. Police are now an everyday sighting. Problem is the "old timers" are passing away, homes are now mostly rentals and we're forced to live in this shi# hole until we die as well since our house is paid for and cannot afford to move.
I roamed the streets of Wichita in the 60s as a young person and every bar that we frequented had a trail of blood leading out from the fights and violence. had enough in January 19 70 packed my bags and me and my buddy headed for Texas and never looked back. Best decision I ever made
I’m from Texas, I passed through about half of Kansas to Salina and back over a weekend. Passing through Wichita was neat to see, just because it looked like a different city than anywhere I’ve seen in Texas, the highway system especially
I live in Topeka, and in the one year I’ve lived here so far, I’ve had my car broken into twice, my home broken into once, been threatened with knives to give someone money at my front door, then threatened with tasers a couple months later. I hate this place, but I was stationed here by the military, so I had no choice.

Just for reference, Wichita ranks 64 out of 328 on the most dangerous cities list (according to FBI data). The top 3 are Memphis, TN, Tacoma, WA, and Pueblo, CO. This "dangerous city" stuff is WAAAAAY dramatized. As a Wichita resident, it is (almost) perfectly safe here so long as you don't stay downtown for too long.
@@maryshoemaker1334 well its a common misconception. Dont get me wrong there are vast stretches of farm land that are flat here but it is mostly rolling hills. If you want flat, Florida is literally the state that has no hills.

Coffeyville KS was the town where the Dalton Gang tried to rob the bank and 4 members of the gang were killed in a shootout during the robbery by citizens of the town.. Happened on October 5th, 1892
I am from a tiny town in Kansas and I can honestly say where there are people, there is crime. The issue with Kansas is there are few drug rehabilitation centers and mental health services so we tend to have a large number of meth addicts out and about. And due to lack of funding and spaces available they cannot receive the help they need. Also, small towns are great for classroom size, but can lack due to funding issues. My school didn’t have any AP programs, and our special Ed classrooms where limited in funding so they couldn’t offer as many opportunities as the bigger schools. Just something to consider for families thinking about moving.
There are 2 really. LEAVENWORTH prison is a fed prison . Lancing is next to it with a state prison. It also is home to an army base were the Officer training center is for all of the Army.

Two places I'm surprised weren't mentioned (but in comparison to Topeka, Newton, and Witchta no shock) are Liberal and Dodge City. They have lots of gun related violence and gang motivated shootings that goes unchecked.
Osawatomie, Kansas is a picturesque little town. There was a antique store on Main Street that I used to visit. I was shocked when the owner told me that "every" store on Main Street had been robbed at gunpoint.
What a nice start to my day, another Nick Johnson video, and only one day after the last new one!!! 😊 I like how you mentioned San Bernardino, CA. Only people who have lived there know how sad it is. My sister has been in so much trouble and had issues that you talk about, but I have had very little. The worst thing I have had was when my sister borrowed my car for the weekend and then let her at the time bf take it to go get ciggies, because she was too lazy to get up. He never came back with it. About a week later it was left running in some people's driveway. It was full of gang and drug signia so the police said and it was totalled. Nick.

My tools were stolen from my truck in Iola once. I was a corrections officer at the time, and my neighbor (a city police officer) had some money stolen by the same person. They found the guy with some of the stuff on him and he was arrested. He bonded out of jail a few days later then proceeded to go home and overdose on meth.

shh. don't tell them that. we have plenty of fires.
