I agree with you, the same here. Every part of this Concerto justs "fits" together like a velvet glove. The one very short section at 04.30 where the violins come in, in that extraordinary ?off-key? contrapuntal? way, justs transports me to a heavenly place. I dont really know how to describe it musically. JS Bach, how did you on earth did you manage to create this marvel?
The thing that makes this concerto stand out as one of the greatest keyboard concertos of all time along with anything written by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Schumann etc is the incredible sense of movement and the conversation between the soloist and the orchestra which all great concertos have.. Even for Bach it feels restless, like it can't stop.. it's wonderful.
The masterpiece of the master himself. I've been listening to this concerto since I was 7 years old, and it always is an experience to listen to it in all of its perfection again. Nothing is impossible for your mind if you listen to this.
A technicality: the piano sounds AWFUL because, tuned to "equal temperament" it isn't really in tune. A harpsichord would have been tuned to "just intonation" (i.e. REALLY in tune) to the nominal key of the piece.
I have been obsessed with this song for so long now, and when i was driving home from school today (mind you i"m only 14) the song came on! I was so excited and i hummed the whole thing. My mom (who is in love with classical as well) sang along with me. I seriously love this!
JS Bach reaches heights expressiveness and intensity that almost no other composer I have come across compares with him. From a purely technical point of view he is also virtually without equal. For artistry and inventiveness he is also virtually without equal.
Not expressive. You just play this stuff straight. I once played the E major unaccompanied violin prelude for my teacher Menuhin. He advised "Don't presume to add expression Let the music speak for itself" Those few words transformed my approach for ever.
Bach is the master of music, the master of all masters of music. His music is perfection, it touches your soul, mind and emotions. This is the most lovely music that ever was created. Music is one of the most magnificent things that has been created. Try to imagine a world without music, everything would be dull and unworthy.
I've had this song stuck in my head for like two solid months, I've been hearing it over and over for probably a third to half of every day. My adhd brain tends to compulsively loop music and usually that's extremely annoying but it's actually kinda nice when its Bach, I think it actually makes me a better musician to be forced to meditate on Bach pieces for months lmao
When I was a teenager, I was not into analysing music at all, but on hearing this work for the first time, I was struck by its impeccable craftsmanship and thoroughly satisfying harmony. It left me in awe of its creator, and wanting more. From that point on, the total genius of JS Bach has been pivotal in my musical appreciation. Thanks for the posting.
This is just gorgeous! I am a huge Vivaldi fan and am grateful that Bach was inspired by him(with certain pieces)! Both are geniuses in their own right! And both deserve the recongition that is due them!

I've heard a radio interview in which Glenn Gould said that Bach would not care much about the choice of instrument to play his music, thus making the piano VS harpsichord debate a red herring. Indeed, Bach transposed much of its work to whatever instruments available. But here, I think this concerto is best played on the harpsichord (Which Sir(?) Pinnock did marvellously). Trying to play this at that speed would be like trying to crack eggs with boxing gloves: you end up with a mess! :-)

I'm not one of those who thumbed down this video, but I can imagine, it might not be the piece itsel people have been displeased with, but the performance, which is so rigid and stiff it makes some listeners here think of heavy metal! ))
You are welcome to recommend better interpretation - that's exactly what it is. Don't confuse it with the limitation of the harpsichord ("rigidity and stiffness" ). I indeed prefer sound of the piano, but if anyone wonders how it sounded in Bach times, this is probably as close as it gets.
As much as I love this piece, I do respect and understand that others might not. Appreciation of music is cultural: If you're not used to this kind of harmony/tone/rhythm etc... you won't really get a kick out of it.
This was not written by human hand...it´s certainly extraterrestrial music. The The English Concert & Trevor Pinnock performance is the best that I´ve heard of this masterpiece.
Don't criticize this person's parents. They are just not knowledgable about music. That doesn't mean that they are barbarians, nor brainless. People who are saying those things are the ones who are truly ignorant. **Another big thing, this person presumably likes this piece since his/her parent's taught them some kind of instrument.**
Playing this piece made me want to cry. Cry tears of pain. Why would he do that?? All the drastic intervals ughhh. Nonetheless great piece. I enjoyed playing.
My grandfather, a Sheffield steelworker and church choirmaster, lay on his deathbed. My father said to him, in the dialect we Yorkshire folk reserve for emotional occasions: "Thi's plenty o' music wheer tha'rt gooin' Father" (short "a" as in cat) The old man lifted a finger and weakly conducted a few beats . "Aye" he said with his last breath: "Bach". Now I don't know if there's' a Heaven, and if so there are angels, and whether those angels are actually singing. But this I know for certain: if there IS a Heaven, and if there are indeed angels, and if so they are indeed singing, then without question they are singing the music of Bach. And, I like to think, my Grandfather might be conducting them!!?? THAT would be Heaven!!!
My wife had classical music playing very softly in my daughter's cot all night through. At 10 she played a Handel Sonata at the South Bank Purcell room. At 11 she was playing "Violin Girl" opposite Lesley Garrett at the London Colisseum for £900 a night in "Street Scene". By 15 she had passed 5 different Grade 8s. Keep it up love: you're a good Mum.
Listening to this in the harpsichord version makes it sound original, and with a different tone from the piano versions. One of Bach's masterpieces, one of my favorites, even though Bach was never my favorite composer (hated those Baroque stuff I played a few years back)
Bach wasn´t ever inspired by the Music of Beethoven. It was the other way: Beethoven said: his Name is a stream but must be an ocean - an ocean of music!"
After listening to Bach for almost 20 years, I still think this is one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of the music.

Philistines
As much as I love this piece, I do respect and understand that others might not. Appreciation of music is cultural: If you're not used to this kind of harmony/tone/rhythm etc... you won't really get a kick out of it.
Absolutly breathtaking.
The effect of the harpsichord is marvoules, doesn't compare to the piano with this concerto.
BRAVO
God wrote this song
evgeny04 you're right. A god did write this
"I didn't write this. I'm just a poor church choirmaster. I only held the pen".
This was not written by human hand...it´s certainly extraterrestrial music. The The English Concert & Trevor Pinnock performance is the best that I´ve heard of this masterpiece.
"I didn't write this music. I'm just a poor choirmaster. I only held the pen."
My parents, "CAN YOU TURN THAT SHITTY MUSIC DOWN!!!"
Eighty9forever wahahahahahhh!! so does my parent!!
Eighty9forever Thank god my parents got me into this kind of music since the first days of my life.
+Eighty9forever barbarians lol
+Eighty9forever Find other parents to hang with, mate.
Bach was a true master.... His musik was inspiring, challenging, and transcends all time..... Truely a master gifted from above...
Playing this piece made me want to cry. Cry tears of pain. Why would he do that?? All the drastic intervals ughhh. Nonetheless great piece. I enjoyed playing.
Bach the most stupendous miracle in all music.
The distiller of the essence of musical craft.
The immortal God of harmony.
This Harpsichord Concerto makes me want to become a
Lithuanian cannibal with expensive taste in shit.
agreed, hahaha
spot on! :)
whaaaa hahaha thats funny
I'm from Lithuanian and trust me, we're like that ! :D
Pursuing some Teutonic Knights.
so much going on with different instruments. so beautiful.
Jesus is God, Bach is human
if anyone knew music theory better than anybody was bach, great phrasing; no wonder he's called father of classical music
Whenever I listen to this, I always picture an epic chase between a cat and a mouse in a Baroque mansion. I don't know why. I just do.
The best version I've heard in my entire life
Fuck, 1:06 to 1:33 was too much for my spine
Same thing for me only it was the part at 0:00 - 7:25
Exactly, YouNolf. :)
DIOS MIOO!! esto es musicaa!! q hermosa melodiaa
through misunderstanding of bach's phrasing and use of chords, only about 10% of the music comes through….still better than most..
THAT would be Heaven!!!
i listen to this for my unborn child in my womb. i can feel my baby rejoicing.
Heavy Metal?????
+Giacomo Cáceres González A transcription of this piece to metal would so fucking brutal! Bach was a genius
yes the 3 movement in the 6 Brandemburgo concert is the best heavy metal.......i agree with youuuuuuuuuuu the 6 Brandemburgo concertó is awasome......
Symphony X used this piece in on of their albums. The name of the album is V: the new mythology suite and The song is "A Fool's Paradise".
J.S Bach was playing Heavy Metal without realizing.
No
Listening to this in the harpsichord version makes it sound original, and with a different tone from the piano versions.
It would have been kind of difficult for Bach to be influenced by Beethoven, as Beethoven was born 20 years after Bach died :D
***** that´s what I wanted to say. Some other user made the comment: Bach was inspired of Beethoven. It´s exactly the other way round ;-)
camposi I wasn't trying to criticise you, just to inform others, as you were too! Enjoy the music :)
My favourite classical piece
