Your one comment about changing the default setting in "Publish to Web" to "allow new and existing codes" saved my sanity! I've been looking for this fix for 2 days and you've solved it. Many many thanks.
Out of idk how many years (at least a decade) this is my first comment on UA-cam. Just want to say thank you. I spent so many hours trying to figure out why I couldn't publish to web even though "I was an admin". You answered everything perfectly.
This is very similar to what I experienced recently - since the option to Publish To Web was enabled for the tenant we decided to introduce claims management by only allowing a singular security group permission to publish, then this change was highlighted by some of the group members and was obviously a simple change to enable future embed codes in tenant settings. It's interesting that all the existing embed codes remain active and changing this setting (without a security group) does highlight to administrators what has been published and stops anything further being published until the setting is changed. I really feel this really does enforce data governance and the placement of measures to ensure potential sensitive data is not exposed.
Bear with me Adam since I haven't got a clue about DNS or other instructions regarding proving I own a tenant...Is there a simple step-by-step, plain language instruction or guide on how on earth I can enable the setting? I am a consultant, I work on my own, I own a tenant, I have been working with Power BI for a couple of years, I have listing in Azure Active Directory (not that I know what it's for…) and I still don't know what I need to do to let "Power BI" know that I am an admin for myself. (there is no-one else). I have used Publish to web to let potential clients play a round with sample reports as a sales tool (with dummy datasets if course) since it is WAY simpler than explaining that they need a "free trial PBI Pro license/sign up to the service" etc to play around with what I showed them in my sales pitch... The instructions start to mumble on about contacting the hosting provider, something about DNS and creating a record...I mean, that 's all very well if you know what you are doing or are an IT admin. I seriously cannot believe how complicated using the Power BI service has become for things like this.
As a charity, it was a cost-free way of sharing our data (that was pre cleaned) with the whole organisations and people who want to fund us. I fully understand locking this down, but it makes things really difficult, especially as the IT provider we use called PowerBI, Powerby...
You can still configure it to perform the way it did before. It just isn't recommended as it could inadvertently lead to data exposure. Also, the way you are stating the use of it sound like a way to potentially avoid licensing costs. Not sure if you've looked into that aspect of it. Something to be aware of.
For new Power BI users, this video is incomplete. For example, what are next steps for publishing on WordPress website... i wish that part would have been included in the demo. Thanks anyways, you have given great exposure on this subject.
Hi Adam. Is there a way for an offline report to be "published" in a way similar to publishing online for the report to be shared with viewers on other machines?
I got a question, if I publish it on the web, is there anyway to be found without the link or the embeded code? Like a search engine, bing? How can I can found a published report that I've done.?

Many of my small business clients need a simple way they can workwith the reports and analysis I prepare for them. Their issues is not security, its having to time and resources to setup PBI in their small organization. In the beginning I was able to create these links and simply share with my clients. Over the past two years I have spent many hours trying to change configuration to permit publish to web. I have the power user subscription and have changed every setting in the Tennents to permit publishing to the web. Still unable to share to the web and forced to convert my reports to power point to share reports with my clients.

Have you found a workaround to export data from a published to web page file? Currently, we are just hosting downloadable source files on our server and have a button to download a source file for a particular dashboard. However, you are downloading the whole data set. Our customers are asking for the filtered data they have on the display behind a chart or a table. :(
Hello Guy, I have published a public dashboard on the web and I would like to know how to enable it so that my users can download the tables that are presented on the screen. Thanks if you can help me.

I used publish to web on a few reports in a dataset. I then created a new report from the same dataset and published to Power BI Services, but when I want to publish this report to the web, I don't have the option under Embed. It is in the same workspace then my other reports. What makes this report different?
Hi I wanted to ask that we have an IT team of 12 people and total employee around 300 so do we need to buy power bi pro license for everyone or only the it team? Because rest of the employees will only see the reports via tha organization website /portal
you can purchase 12 editor licenses, and a bulk 300-500 visualization licenses (which are cheaper) talk to your local tech partners for guidance! by doing this, you lock your data to the people within the organization, thanks to Power BI's service login and role configuration, then you define access levels for users with row level security. This way you'll never worry about publish to web and the stuff Adam talked about in the video if you dont want to buy those licenses, then your best bet to share data and keep it private out there in the open (publish to web) is to use "security by obscurity" such as passwords and users embedded in the dataset... which is extremely dangerous, not to mention unprofessional. (edit: typos)
In Admin portal I tried to change the settings to be able to generate code but in portal there is no options as the one mentioned in video only 2 options shows (capacity settings and refresh summary) so how to get the other options
Well my problem is different. I want to use new workspace and be able to publish to web with a shared datasets. My data is insensitive publicly avaible data. And I have different publish to web NGO clients. Now with new workspace I either have to make data silos for every other report that I am publishing to web from same dataset or hope MS to put an option for us to use this with a insensitive shared dataset.
Well, im definitely loving it. Im a developer and trusted editor, so im always going back and forward with my boss and managing some of the publishing. I will get that permission, im sure. But i have been telling him that publish to web is not a good solution for internal data, but he is just adamant that we wont be getting more Viewer licenses. I legit hate that. I cant do any row level sec like this, we only have 6 people with PBI accounts
Hi Adam, have a report that uses a python visual. Now I have to publish it to the web, but when I use this option the python visual breaks. Why is this if the visual already worked in my workspace? How can I solve this? Is there any workaround? Thank you.
What’s the best way to get PBI tiles into a web app. I have responsive web pages so cannot use iFrame and my reports are taking 5-8 seconds for page load of full report. Can I embed individual tiles so I can get objects to load sequentially Thanks!
This option is not available now. Do you know how to do it. I mean i have shared embed code with web developer but it's asking for login. And you know now Microsoft have changed this layout. You see only one option as far as website is concerned
This has absolutely nothing to do with Power BI Premium. This means that Power BI Admins have control on what reports (and underlying data) is exposed to the internet without authentication. If you are a one person tenent then you can configure this by making sure you have access to the admin portal. You may need to go though the O365 Admin Takeover to get into it.

I see folks saying that using the link behind, say SharePoint online, that is secure. I sat in a presentation yesterday where the presenter said that. The report link is still insecure. Period. It does reduce discoverability though.
Hi @Adam, Thanks for the video. I'm hoping you can give me some directions here. I have a report that is connected to a Power BI dataset (which is also published to power bi service) but it seems I can't generate an embedded code under this scenario. Nothing happens when I click "Publish" and I don't get any message or alert from Power BI. Any ideas if there are any limitations when we try to publish reports that are connected to a live Power BI dataset?
I had published a report to a website but data is not getting refreshed on website but it’s getting refreshed in power bi service. Updated data not reflecting on website. can anyone help ?
R.I.P Power BI. One of the most important sharing options that made Power BI atractive to users has a huge obstacle and demands a huge burocracy to enable it. Also, it is apparently unabled for free users... very disappointing...
I published my file using the publish button in PBI Desktop. Does it go public to the web? Does it only reside in my workspace? Pd: Im still using the free version and figuring if i might need to go pro.
I Published one of my report to web and it works perfectly fine but the problem is that it doesn't refresh when I update my data. I have connected to my data through OneDrive, please advise how can I make my published to web report update, every time I update my data.
Do you need to be a paid user to activate the admin portal? Just stumbled upon Power BI and I think it could solve some of my problems but I cant publish to web since I'm not a system admin....the catch is I'm the only one who signed up for Power BI
Hi I have published my report and used embedded code in sharepoint site, but now I am not getting analyze option where I was able to ask to explain the increase or decrease. Please help.?
Wouldn't be related to publish to Web change. Explain the increase/decrease is contextual. Did you go through the doc? Curious if that doesn't clear it up for you. docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/desktop-insights#using-insights
Thanks for video. But i have a question, i cannot find anything in my admin portal in power bi account. so can you please tell me how can i find power bi admin or who is the admin of a power bi in any organization
Are you asking how to find the Power BI Admin portal? Or finding the settings within the admin portal? It may be that there is no declared owner for your tenant and you may need to take it over in order to adjust the settings.
@@GuyInACube hello sir, actually i cannot see anything in my admin portal section in my power bi account. and i also have little idea about the power bi admin. so how can i find admin portal tanent option or what is the solution to publish in web when i use a organization mail. or in a word who is generally a power bi admin in any organization. i think it is very silly question. but it will be so kind if you have this answer.
Hi to all, I have the same doubt than Tanveer. I have a free Power bi account with a organization email (eg: abc @companyname.com). With that account, I have the “Admin Portal” option but is empty. Thanks in advance for any help you could provide to us @Guy in a cube
There's exactly ONE person in my organization. So, when Microsoft tells me to contact my admin, it's not helpful. And the process for establishing myself as the admin is difficult and complex and involves editing MX records, which are related to email routing, to prove that I own the domain. Is that even possible for a Wordpress hosted site? This is such a draconian change that could have been sooo..... much better designed. Adam, Can you please publish the phone number to the Microsoft support team who can adjust this setting for me?
I know it is a pain. Should be a TXT record to update in your DNS. Has nothing to do with the WordPress site. I'll do a video on this next week. For support, head over to support.microsoft.com.
@@GuyInACube Same situation as jgalt650 here - trying to publish some freely available data we collected. Did you make that video @Guy in a Cube? Link by any chance?
Hii there, new to POWER BI using free desktop i can't find the publish to web option and in admin portal it shows only two options capacity settings refresh summary can you help me to know why this.
Why do you say its is not safe to publish to the web? If you do it, you get a 100+ character link. Who is able to guess what is it? Only people that have that link can open the report, isn't it?
Hey, go put "site:app.powerbi.com confidential" into a google search. Then you'll see that Google (and BING) crawl the pages that have been "published to web". That means they are searchable. That means someone may be able to search for and find your "publish to web" report. That means "publish to web" reports are not secure.
@@HatFullOfData123 OK, I just published to the web RealThings.pbix . Can you find it on internet and tell me one or two phrases/numbers that are in there?
@@HatFullOfData123 I think you should back up your claim! It just isn't so easy find these reports. And searching Google and Bing for "site:app.powerbi.com confidential" produced ZERO results for me. We know from the video that the MIcrosoft investor site uses PowerBI. Please post the google search that links to the URL to app.powerbi.com of that IFRAME. Not so easy.
@@jgalt650 It's not going to become public at the moment when URL created and I don't think brute force attack is possible. But once it has been embedded into a public web site - you have no control over the report anymore, anyone can re-share the link and you won't even get any notification or visitors statistic. But if you shared a link only with a small group of people I think it's * relatively * (any of this people can re-share the URL for some reason and again you won't know about that) safe. I wouldn't trust this feature with confidential data anyway. But if all stakeholders accept the risk - who will stop them? Publish to web works great for open data reports, except some issues with report/data updating.
Is there a way to publish to web and visualize using an specific login? Let's suppose my company has a login for every client and I want to publish the visuals only in that client's account. Is there a way to publish it without compromising the data?
Secure embed can be used that will give an similar to Publish to Web. However, it requires a login. Of note, a license is a named per user item and not meant for shared accounts to bypass paying for the proper licensing.

is there a way to view a "publish to web" report metrics?
Not from a report. I believe it is part of the Audit log though. So, you could collect that and build a report on it.
All you would get is number of views though. As you wouldn't have an end user.
hey someone knows if it is possible to publish to web buy only in mobile design?
I don't have the same windows as in 4:12 "Admin portal", so what am I suppose to do ?
I don't see "tenant settings" ((
Do you need to be a paid user to activate the admin portal? Just stumbled upon Power BI and I think it could solve some of my problems but I cant publish to web since I'm not a system admin....the catch is I'm the only one who signed up for Power BI
Many of the users are requesting the same question..Better he could make a video on that..Who are working independently
¡¡¡Gracias!!!
Thanks for video.
But i have a question,
i cannot find anything in my admin portal in power bi account. so can you please tell me how can i find power bi admin or who is the admin of a power bi in any organization
Are you asking how to find the Power BI Admin portal? Or finding the settings within the admin portal?
It may be that there is no declared owner for your tenant and you may need to take it over in order to adjust the settings.
@@GuyInACube hello sir,
actually i cannot see anything in my admin portal section in my power bi account. and i also have little idea about the power bi admin. so how can i find admin portal tanent option or what is the solution to publish in web when i use a organization mail.
or in a word who is generally a power bi admin in any organization.
i think it is very silly question. but it will be so kind if you have this answer.
Hi to all, I have the same doubt than Tanveer. I have a free Power bi account with a organization email (eg: abc @companyname.com). With that account, I have the “Admin Portal” option but is empty. Thanks in advance for any help you could provide to us
@Guy in a cube
@@denisdeangelo6605 were you able to resolve this issue ? I am working with free version as well and any my admin portal is empty .
@@ashrithananduri6785 let me know if you found this
awesome!
I'm admin and have deployed a report in a workspace but I have only as option SharePoint online and website or portal. Any idea?
Are those the only data sources you have in your report? I had SQL and CSV as those were data sources that I added within Power BI Desktop.
@@GuyInACube yes sql tables.
Link by any chance?
nice
Hii there, new to POWER BI using free desktop i can't find the publish to web option and in admin portal it shows only two options capacity settings refresh summary can you help me to know why this.
Same here, it only shows those 2 options on Admin portal. I'm guessing you gotta have the premium account, right?
Rip power bi, Microsoft never speaks with community before they do smth.
Microsoft help was totally useless and wasted hours of my time.thanks
Man, you dont know how mad i was because this admin rules (thanks to helping me)
Why do you say its is not safe to publish to the web?
I think it's shit for every it department in the world.
Gracias Walter White! :)
jajaja
Until Microsoft decides to support export to Excel from a published to web report, my finance customers have no interest.
Yeah our company threw Power BI out beacause of this. rip
Because of the recent change? Or prior to that? What was the scenario why you were using it and why you opted out of Power BI because of the change?
How much does he pay you to do YOOOOO in beginning. It's very irritating.
