Thanks for this video! I’m tackling my gear box this weekend. I’m also replacing the pump and fluid lines as well. If you see me on the side of the road, it’s not going to be because of my steering! 👍🏼
Thanks for the video I bought a 86 Wagoneer that was in a backyard for 16 years and the previous owner disconnected the steering I didn't know what part went in there. I can see it's a normal rag joint I should be able to get one for it.
I got a reman gear box for my grand wagoneer. (Didn't do the rag joint at the same time) but the amount of play before and after is almost exactly the same. Even the redhead you got had some play in it. Is some play just inherent in the system?
I believe it’s inherent of the gear box system. In other cars I’ve driven with rack and pinion design there’s significantly less slop. On the surface my rag joint looked ok but only after I removed it, I noticed that it should be replaced. The key is to pin point where the movement is coming from. With the jeep parked, I turned the steering wheel side to side while my phone below was filming the steering components. With two people it’s a lot simpler and easier to find the slop in the system. I’d look closer at your rag joint. Older rag joints are made of rubber(an organic compound) once exposed to oil and other petroleum products, that rubber starts breaking down. I’d say a little play is ok but I would still try to confirm that it’s just the inherent play in the gearbox and not some other component.
That could be a piece of plastic from the power steering bottle cap. You know the one you tear away old school type maybe a little piece fell in there when the PO poured fluid directly from the bottle. Great Video, please keep them coming. BTW - How did you know the rag joint was good? BTW what part # did you order I could not find anything for jeeps on their website. - Thx
Oh ya from an old school power steering fluid bottle. If the old power steering gear wasn’t so worn and loose, a bad worn rag joint would flex and move as you turned the steering wheel. Mine had maybe 30% life left but they’re so cheap that I went a head and replaced it too. If you poke your rag joint with a pick and it’s squishy, replace it. Or if it abnormally flexes as you turn it’s bad. On a new one the rubber is relatively solid. In there Product Search field, type in “Jeep” and all their Jeep steering gears come up.
Thanks man. I think at that time I was trying to burn through all my flat black rustoleum rattle cans. It was probably the primer plus paint in one rustoleum can.
I feel you. It’s funny because whenever I rent a car I check for play and there’s always some. Even in a modern car. That kinda makes me feel better lol
@@JeepArmyUSA its funny, i actually had to just warranty out the box for another one. Sector shaft developed in and out play. New one is good. The gearbox was only on my cj for 7 months with maybe 700-800 miles on it....

You did great clean work sir 👍🏼

For sure. That should be an easy find

Great video my man!! What did you use to paint that frame? It looks real clean.

What coating did you apply the those surfaces??
The gearbox came coated
Where did you get your steering gearbox sir?
From Red head steering gears
I have a redhead too and that "tiny bit" bugs me. it should be zero. not half an inch.

I put a red head box in my CJ5 and it really tightened the steering up.
Mines definitely been nice but the outside body of the steering gear box is already starting to show rust, so we’ll see...

I should’ve got a blue top LOL. I don’t know if they’re better or worse.
@@JeepArmyUSA yeh when i get a new one for my dodge im going with blue top.
Elbow grease? Where do you buy that at?
It depends. What year, make and model?
Thanks for the video this saved my ass 😂
