In this video I'll show you how to rebuild your saginaw power steering gear box. That means taking it apart, cleaning, inspecting, and replacing all the seals. The saginaw boxes are very common and came in many Jeeps, Chryslers, Chevys, Dodges, and others.

what is the charge to rebuild a gearbox
Corvair owner with huge 80 degrees of steering wheel play - column though does wobble! Already this has been helpful (lost half a turn when I loosened the jam nut - so, great catch by you in that prior video!)
G'day from Oz Matty.. Awesome video mate.. I read some of the comments. i'm not sure if anyone has pass this info on. Just wanted to share a little trick with the Ball bearings in the Piston housing. If you remove your Rotary valve (by turning Anti-clockwise) from the Unit keeping the steering box Horizontal you can slide the Piston out with the balls inside. When you pull the piston out have a container underneath to catch any stray ones (They usually stay inside the piston). And when reinstalling use a little grease to hold the balls in place in the guide tube and then pack the piston from one hole only starting with the next color inline to match the way you packed the tube (again with a little grease to help hold them in place). When reinstalling the Piston into the housing have the end plug removed so you can see the magic take place.. Allow the worm gear to pull the piston in and hey presto.. It's a bit easier and allows you more room to play around. Hope that help others when doing the install.. All the best for New Year everyone.. =)
I am familiar with rebuilding various types of steering boxes and have done so in the past. I have also seen various videos and tutorials on Sag box rebuilds, but I must say that this one is really clear and informative for the average person. The explanations are clear and the video itself is as well. I am sure that it will convince many people that they can undertake this project with basic hand tools, confidence and patience. Great job : < )
This was one of the most helpful videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. Thanks!!!
Hey just wanted you guys to know there are 2 seals for the output shaft... first is the oil seal(deepest) and the second(outer) seal is a dust seal.
I'll give it to ya. You never have a boring video. Always something to keep a person entertained and maybe a laugh or two Kep up the great how to videos. I've learned a lot.
well done matt! I have never seen a video so complete on a steering box rebuild
I have watched dozens of technical videos and this is one of the best I have seen. Well done guys!
Awesome job. Infinitely better than a lot of the other automotive "how to" channels I've seen.
Very clear tear down, seal replacement. I wish that you would have touched on steering wheel play, and shaft play.(the bearing you did not take out) I was hoping you where going to talk through it.But you passed on. Which these are my box symptoms. I have very few that leaked. But all have had some degree of play at the steering wheel. And a '72 corvette that had extreme shaft play. You make great videos.
@23:22- didnt know about the size difference, put it back together and it isnt turning freely . thanks for the detailed information.

Doing this rebuild....the guts of a jeep box into my 68 chevelle box that way I achieve faster ratio steering into my chevelle box while retaining my standard line hookups.....jeep box is metric lines
Thanks to this video, thumbs up
Wow! Fantastically clear presentation and explanation of what everything does in there and how to disassemble and reassemble. Thank you!
I ended up buying a rebuilt one but this is really cool to know what’s in it. Makes those diagrams make more sense! (99 dodge ram van 1500 5.2)
Searches "rebuild steering box". Clicks very first link in the results. Doesn't bother looking for any others, because what could possibly be a better tutorial than this one?? Fantastic walk thru, thanks for uploading!! 👌👌
Thanks
God Bless Bleepin Jeep. This will be tomorrows project!
Getting ready to do mine. More than your video available. Watched both. Yours is better in my opinion. Thanks. Ed
this is the BEST you tube how to on all of how to vids out there. thanks a bunch. now i gotta go do mine
I would pay the 2 of you to fix my truck in a heartbeat. After watching this video I’m 100% sure I don’t want to deal with my steering box... 😆😆😆😆
Awesome vid man ✊🏾😎
Excellent video to show all the details of a rebuild. I've got leaky seals but I'll probaly just do the box replacement. Still a very interesting video.
Very well done video. I've never been into a gearbox before. I think I can now. Thanks.
+Jim Addison sure, no problem
Can't thank you enough for sharing this rebuild. I'm just about to start my first box on a f150/94. Looking for incite on the differences. Good Job
Thought about rebuilding mine but after watching your awesome video I changed my mind. Gunna go buy a refurbished one instead.
Just finished the steering box (Delphi) rebuild on my 2004 Silverado 2500 HD 4x4, and I couldn't have done it without Matt's help (and your channel, too)!! The ball bearings were the toughest part, and I watched, then paused, then watched, and paused the video 20 times, to get it right!
Thank you both for posting this video!!
I subscribed just because of that info!
Stay safe, stay well, and wear a mask!! We'll get through this virus, eventually..., God willing, and the creek don't rise!
Thanks! That's everything I needed to know. With the Year, Make and Model, I was able to look it up on Omega's site, and then when I finally found a picture of it, it matches what I'm looking for.
For future reference, it was (most likely) kit # 2780.
Thank You This Helped Alot I Have A 2000 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 Sport And I Was Struggling With The Ball Bearing For The Worm And Putting Them Into The Piston
Great video, great job....after seeing how much is involved i might just buy a remanufactured box for $150
Great video. Worked perfect for my rebuild! Keep on the good work guys!
Thanks guys! Needed the seal kit and found your link in description! Will be on my porch in 3 days!
HAHA, love the unexpected hilarity at 10:00, reminds me to have fun in between bleeping at my Jeep!
The Matt Narrating the video & rebuilding the steering box sounds like Travis Haley from Haley Strategic to me...Anyone else think so? lol Also thank you for the video I am currently rebuilding a steering box for my Dodge Ram 2500 & this video proved to be very helpful.
if I ever saw a perfect demo vid its this one ..........thumbs up ..........im from Trinidad an Tobago ..........hope your other vids are a blast
yep, they are great as exercise stairs too!
Very well done----- I liked the "Intermission" Part
Great vid. OMG teh lulz at 10:00 when you freestyled the jacks +25 street cred.
Stay gold.
You said that was your first time You rebuild it like a BOSS. Lol
Nice video, thanks!
Great vid and thanks for the help this would have sucked doing blind or on the crapping instruction sheet in the rebuild kit lol
I had no clue about the balls being 2 different size and colors. Thank you!
Just finished the job using this video!! Thanks!!
Yes Is all correct, with cold engine power steering works great!
Thanks a bunch , I got my ol warshin machine back up to par it's got a rather similar "steering" box between the engine and transmission.
I imagine many will read this with a super perplexed facial expression...and I'm good with that, Thanks!!
damn i got a used box for 20 bucks. im impressed that you will go through all this work to save a few bucks, well done
Great video. Lots of details on what to do and not do. You made it look easy, I'll find out tonight.
Excellent video. ! Very good explanation of the rebuild!!
Thanks
Great video , what if the adjustment screw has been adjusted?? How do you get it back too spec prior to rebuild ????
Hi Matt, Damn I screwed up. Put the collar on the casing of pit shaft for the box brace. also did the jcr strengthening plate. Got it all back together and pulled out of my garage and boom...Leaking now! ....Pretty sure I tightened the collar too tight and blew the seal.
Great job with the video guys, clear and concise!
Well done video. Thanks for showing us how it's done.
Я всё еще смотрю тебя🎉🎉 еще начиная с твоего маленького гаража❤
Great video.. instead off transmission fluid.. why not use power steering fluid...
The jacks are pretty neat. You need a piece of pipe to put on the handle that comes toward you.
the only thing we didnt take apart was the top cap assembly which you can see at 2:30. As mentioned if you take that apart it will be hell getting it adjusted right again. Other than that we didnt skip anything.
sweet thanks...helped me with a saginaw dual piston 710 box
Ya know... the more I look into this the more I think I'm probably going to be better off just having someone else do it...
+ilovethelegend if interested we can do it for you and tap the box for hydro assist at the same time. Check the website store.
Same bro 💀🤦♂️
Hi there, I have movement between the output shaft and the housing. So the needle bearing and shaft are worn? Adjustment on top of box won’t help, right? Thanks
Thank you soo much for making this video!! It was super helpful!!
Need to do this with a 68 Pontiac. Box is probably very similar.
Very helpful vid, although I did cringe a little when you were turning the input shaft with pliers. :)
You made it look simple! I think I could have done this instead of buying one for $300. Now I know!
I have a friend who’s dad is rebuilding mine but said he will make it a fixed steer gear box instead of a variable speed steer. He said there will be zero play in the box off of center so I am very interested in how it will drive when I get it back. He’s rebuilt thousands of these and from reading a variable speed box is better on heavier vehicle so I hope it has a race car feel of steering to it. I never liked how the Jeep steered
Excellent: Complete instructions; would have messed it up without the video!
Good video. The closest I ever came to rebuilding a box is replacing the pitman shaft seals in my AGR box. The seals had failed because AGR re-engineered the seal system without realizing that they are not actual engineers, lol. I just put an OEM seal kit in it.
At least now I know I'm not the only one who does that with their jack
Why would you not use power steering fluid to lube up the casing instead of Trans Fluid?
Very useful man, thanks! My box has been leaking for a bit so I'll be doing this soon.
Great video guys, very professional and informative. Keep up the good work.
😘
nicely done! feels like I can do it :) good details . Could you pls tell me if there is a place where I can buy those ball bearings. 24 of them right
Thanks! Nice video! But... in the video you did replace just 1 oil seal in the pitman shaft, Correct? Can you confirm that there are in fact 2 oil seals? upper superior oil seal (followed by a washer) and a lower inferior oil seal (again followed by a washer)?Thx
Great video! Very thorough and well done. Thanks!
What about timing the sector shaft grear to the rack gear to get equals turns right to left
Excellent video. BleepinJeep, I am a new jeeper and I recently bought my first Wrangler TJ. I have been to trails two times so far. Can you please do a video which covers the maintenance we should after a trail run ? Just to make sure everything is good?
-Thanks so much.
Thanks! After watching this, I'm just going to replace mine! 😄
What year is your car? I've got a 79 Elco, and could use all the same. Thanks. Great work!
HAAAA! You are so friggin' entertaining and such a great teacher! Thanks for this vid!
For the output shaft bearing can it come out through the bottom or you need to drive it out upwards through the gearbox?
Thank you very much for the video 👍👍
This is a great video but I need to know if i can just replace jam nut on the adjustment for play and where can I get one? My play adjustment is rusted on i cant adjust play at all.
I need to swap housing , this does help .
On 16:04 at the worm gear there is O Ring that you're showing us, is that the new O Ring or old O Ring ? That mean you didn't replace it to the new one...
That being said, I just looked at this durango swap. I do not need hyro assist. I am only running 33s 456 gears 99xj all the works..sye..etc and I don't rock climb..It's a DD and I tow a Cargo trailer time and time ...78,000 original miles...never had a problem with this steering box till now. never any play. Just fluid coming out of the seals after the jcr plate and box brace. I do have a winch bumper on there so that extra space on the bolts might be a issue. It was a bitch getting in. The longer bolts thread to the end of the box tapping so don't think that's a issue. I have to take this box out and see exactly where this leak is. It is either the top seal, bottom seal from what I can see. Hoses and flare fittings are still intact. I might have cracked this box tightening the bolts on the re-install. I will learn this vid if I decide to rebuild so thanks Matt for all of these great videos. I am from Rockland County NY and far from you guys. I wanted to come see you for the Jamboree but can't make it. Maybe some day. Thanks again. Sincerely. Ricky G.
Why did we tear apart the entire box to do that seal? You pull the snap ring start the engine and turn the steering wheel to full lock it will blow the old one right out. I would have replaced the teflon power piston seal as well.
Looks easy, thanks for the advice
This is the most very good video. thaks
Matt,
What is the pin diameter on that homemade spanner wrench? I want to make one of my own before I remove my gearbox. Thanks.
maybe so, before you take it back make sure you have it centered... to check it now make sure your tires turn from lock to lock.
Hey, great video! Very thorough, and I like the way you explain things in more detail...thanks!
Quick question: What is the model number for that steering box unit? What did it come out of?
I've got a leaky steering box in my 05 Duramax, and it looks a lot like that...
Very well done informative video!
Thanks Ya'll!
I have an 88 S10 Blazer . My steering box is leaking from the input shaft . Is it possible to just change the seal and fix it without breaking it down ? And will this stop the leak or is it that the o rings need to be replaced on the piston input ?
Where can we find repair kit ? Thanks for this great video !
I have steering play and when you turn the shaft that comes from the wheel and goes into the box it turns partially with ease.
Does this rebuild get rid of ALL play in the steering?
Dewalt is also like to know how to get rid of steering box slop.
The nut on top he said not to turn is how you adjust the play. 1/4 turn tighter at a time and then take it for a test run
good information and nice presentation.
Is it possible to just remove piston to replace teflon rings ? Working on 2003 dodge ram 2500 turns hard to left only no leaks no binding.
Bleepin Jeep. Thanks for your reply.I will try.
if the bearing is bad it should be replaced. the nut on top only adjusts the backlash of the gears inside.
Wow you convinced me to buy a new one.
Really nice job man
Very well done video and critically helpful. Thanks! It would be useful to know the total number of ball bearings. What was the total count, 24?
Yes
I'm not sure I can give you a part number at this point. I got the kit from orielleys and just asked for a complete rebuild seal kit for a 88 jeep cherokee steering box.
Dang dude!!! You were young!
Great video bro
Im matt watching matt n matt fix some shit that i gotta fix.
.....interesting
