I wonder why British design dieselloco engines were not equipped with pre- heaters for both coolant and engine oil. Just like incorporated in most large engines designed in the same era in Germany. Never seen such clagging, popping and flames with German dieselloco’s. Explosions in the exhaust might pose a serious risk for the engine, let alone the waste of fuel and the effects on the environment. At that time this was of no concern, I know. Today, however, we think differently and it surprises me they still are allowed to be operated, museum status or not.

Yes, I remember only to well ! Slipped to a stand in park street tunnel on the postal ecs one morning just after we got them as replacements for the 25s. @@peterkwakman7440 they start with another engine called a donkey engine. There's no key to be used like your car these engines are far to big for a battery and starter motor. That tiny donkey engine sounds like something out of a moped and it builds up oil pressure eventually turning the main engine and pumping fuel at the same time. These locos will not be in everyday use so they will be harder to start compared to everyday locomotives.
Wish i could go back to the era of diesel locos like these, so unique!

Yeah. I miss the filthy stations, having to close windows in tunnels and trains breaking down.
Nah, Greta ruined all that!

No smoke no poke
Right! I think VW are envious about that 🙄

@SpeedbirdConcorde Indeed Brush built loco, but if memory serves me correctly the engine is an EE 12svt. Takes a while to get to twelve though.
@@metalwraith6162 Yes. They ripped out the original Mirlees engines pretty quickly.
Amazing what happens when the second bank starts firing.

I remember leaving Sheffield for Derby on a cold winters night with a 31/4 up front with Sparks coming out mid eighties.
I believe you BR boys never switched them off while away from depots because of the preparation and hassle starting these up
Great video
Chuga Choo Choo! I'm a train and I approve this video :D
I love the heritage locos, the 31's are amongst my favourites. But must admit to being biased to the original Brunswick Green livery

It would be interesting to read a comparison between this and a steam loco for true toxic emissions and carcinogenics.
I understand that any pollution from steam locomotives falls out of the air because it's heavy.
This: lots of crap comes out when it's starting.
Steam: lots of crap comes out the whole time it's running.
@@beeble2003 So why have diesel vehicles all been fitted with DPFs? Diesel particulates are harmful. why do you think modern networks are electrified?
It is far worse. Studies were done many years ago.

No risk to the engine. Like most things it is cultural and fiscal. It is what it is.
