    Have a pair of Bose 301seris IIs that I had laying around and a pair of orange Advent fried eggs from a large Advent. Yeah the fried eggs ended up in the front of the bose with a new crossover ( first oder at 2600 hertz) so the light bulbs are gone. Used a nice L-Pad to attenuate the highs a few decibels. The original tweeters still fire backwards. They do sound better and I'm using a sub. I actually like the large sound stage they put out . There is a sweet spot but I can still be sitting in front of one and here the sound stage pan over to the othet side. There is a pair of small directional speakers just inside them that I can blend in as desired on a second amp....I know that shouldn't work, but it does ...compounding things that shouldn't work are a third set of speakers on the floor sealed in paint cans with the tweeters sitting along side sitting on tobacco cans aimed at the ceiling on the other side of the room powered by another amplifier. Many broken rules with enjoyable results . Non of my amplifiers need to work hard either. Had an interesting space in the basement too work with all the walls were covered with 10" 7 ply 3/4 " red oak plywood boards...the ceiling is pine tongue and groove...got to do something about those loose ends...it's pretty loud before they rattle. Anything under a watt is wonderful.

      @@Blowncapacitor84 thanks...it's all eighties and some nineties equipment. A Yamaha RX'V850 that I'm using as the preamp and powering the Bose . A Pioneer SA-520 and MCS 2255(Technics integrated that uses some SU power packs that are connected to a freon tube going to the heat sink) powering the other speakers. An Onkio DX-710 CD player. JVC DD-7 cassette deck...going on 20,000 hours....probably the most reliable deck they made...direct drive capstan and Sendust Alloy Heads ,,,makes a nice tape with TDK D series. Oh yeah a Technics SL-7 close"n"play linear tracking turntable that I pulled out of a dumpster by the power cord in good working condition. I just picked up a Stanton L747S cartridge with a good Steriohedron stylus that appears to be nude mounted so it's basically a 681 Steriohedron...a bargain because L747S is a p-mount .A little Infiniti sub ...looking for something a little bigger though. I'm glad that all that stuff was found decades ago when it was free or dirt cheap. I don't see anything in thrift stores anymore and now the stuff gets recycled instead of curbside and dumpsters. Next is get my Sansui AU-7900 up and running the preamp in it is lovely.

    I used to dislike Bose back in the days, pretty much because what I read about them.
    What material they use and all of that.
    I have had many different speaker brands pretty much searching for the right type of sound, but to my surprise at the end of the day it was the Bose type of sound I ended up with liking the most😄😄

      I'm in the exact same boat. Honestly, these 601's sound pretty good!!
      I can kinda see the bait and switch thing that JA was talking about but it seems to me that their products are well made with good components.

    These aren't a patch on the 601s series that came before. These are very boomy with none of the 'air' that the original 4 tweeter arrangement provided. This series lacks enough poly fill (anti-resonance) for two active woofers.

    • @Blowncapacitor84
      @Blowncapacitor84  7 місяців тому

      They are definitely boomy. Would you suggest adding more poly fill? They are currently being used in the living room and work fine for the situation (I don't use them for music)

      @@Blowncapacitor84 whenever I've built speakers in the past I used 3/4in thick wool-felt carpet padding in leu of poly fill but it'd be easier for you to add poly fill

      @@Blowncapacitor84 the design of the series 4 is basically a quasi-Voigt Pipe (or a tuned quarter wavelength tube) with its own set of resonances. It's also a bi-polar configuration since it has a woofer on both front and rear baffles, wired in-phase with each other (if the rear driver were wired out of Phase it'd be a di-pole). A bi-polar configuration also enhances bass and makes room placement a bit more critical.
      I'm not sure what the crossover points are but previous series had an overlapping crossover point: 2500hz for the woofers and 1500 for the tweeters. Not sure if the series 4 are the same or not but a high crossover point on both woofers in a Voigt pipe would make for a lot of boom. Lowering the crossover point on the rear facing woofer might alleviate some of that mid-bass bloat.
      You be interested in reading up on Paul Voigt, an innovator in acoustic research and was a major influence in the field for decades (including JBL and Klipsch) and pretty much the shoulders of which Amar Bose stood upon.

      They honestly do have a "live" sound. And I really do enjoy the sound they make. I actually have a good video coming up on a nice little Realistic amplifier I found in San Antonio!. But I would recommend these. Also, thank you, and happy Thanksgiving to you! 👍
