Dalmatia is s historical region of croatia and not a "gift" it was conquered by venice once yes but the population spoked always croatian and italian, also in the croatian kingdom in 925 dalmatia was a part of it and later the union with hungary too in 1848 dalmatia was connected with the croatian slavonian kingdom. And there was a letter in 1821 that was.m counting all ethnic groups in dalmatia snd croatians where the largest ethnic group in that region.

Dalmatia has a very diverse history. The name itself comes from the Dalmatae, an Illyrian tribe which was conquered by the Roman Republic, which evolved into the Roman Empire, it was again taken over by Odoacer´s Kingdom of Italy, then conquered by the Ostrogothic Kingdom ruled by Theoderic the Great, the Eastern Roman Empire, Kingdom of Croatia, Kingdom of Hungary, Kingdom of Bosnia (parts of it for a short period), Republic of Venice which Split it with the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Ragusa / Dubrovnik, then the French Empire´s Illyrian provinces, Empire of Austria, Austria-Hungary, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Fascist Italy, Socialist Yugoslavia and finally the modern Republic of Croatia. Few regions in the world have changed hands as often as Dalmatia and throughout a history spanning 2500 years.

Dalmatia wasn't a gift, the "Slavs" you mention living there were Croats and they were living there since 7th century. In fact, Dalmatia is where original medieval Croatia was located and it was THE Croatia until Venetians and Ottomans conquered it and what was left of Croatia was only around Zagreb and it elected Habsburgs as kings to save Croatia from Ottoman conquest. Venetians then took the coast from Ottomans, and Dalmatia was merely returned to Croatia after centuries of separation. Italians were only majority in several cities and their population is always overstated because of their historic territorial pretentions, specially under fascists.
Entry of Croatia to Schengen will not accelerate emigration because Schengen is irrelevant in that respect. Schengen only allows one to cross the border without showing the ID. I doesn't make emigration easier, it only makes it you don't have to wait in line at the border crossing. Nothing else. How is this so hard to understand to Europeans? It just removes border crossings. Ease of moving, working and living elsewhere in the EU is part of just being in EU. Schengen does not affect it at all.
Dubrovnik wasn't part of Venice for centuries by the time they gave Neum to Ottomans. It is not typically Venetian city, it's entire history is based on opposition to Venice. It's wealth came from being the main trade port between Balkans and Mediterranean, so it was very focused on inland trade and had trade colonies even on the Danube in Ilok, easternmost town in Croatia. It just wasn't expansionist.
One alternative to the bridge was building a closed motorway behind Neum, but the problem isn't just that Bosnia is an independent state that is in the way, it's the nature of Bosnian politics. A country constantly on the edge of civil war with 3 nations who can't agree on even what is the colour of clear sky at noon. It is near impossible to agree anything with them and political instability makes any investment risky. It was safer to avoid them.

To add, Croatia wasn't always this shape. Back in midevil times modern day Bosnia and Herzegovina was mostly Croatian all the way until the Ottomans came. Then Croats emigrated and the demographics changed through wars to todays borders.

Dalmatia was definitely never homogeneous area, having in mind a large population of Orthodox Serbs (before genocide in ww2), Catholic Serbs, and Roman population.

D'ailleurs, on trouve encore maintenant des zones majoritairement peuplées de croates en Bosnie, même si après la conquête ottomane une majorité de croates a émigré vers la Croatie actuelle.

Dubrovnik was a subject of Venice for a very short time, it was much longer under the Byzantium, from 1358 it was de fecto independent after Hungarian king granted them autonomy. It was an independent state till 1808. when marshall Auguste Marmont arrived with the French army (450 years of independence).

- Neum was given by Republic of Ragusa to Ottomans to prevent having a land border with Venice after Ottomans were defeated in 1699, since Dubrovnik was an Ottoman ally and profited from trade with Islamic world and felt less threatened by Ottomans than by Venice which wanted to be the sole power in this area, so basically they wanted to be landlocked at that point in history, but it obviously created new problems in a new political landscape after both maritime republics were gone
- Dalmatia doesn't border Istria, there is a region called Croatian Littoral between, it's roughly the coast of Primorje-Gorski kotar and Lika-Senj counties, and it can also be considered a part of central Croatia, it historically remained a part of Croatian Kingdom througout the centuries of Habsburg rule

Republic of Ragusa has nothing to do with Croatia, until late XIX century. Ragusa/ Dubrovnik became part of Croatia only in 1939.

OMG, Dalamtia is historical region of Croatia anexed in history and it is defenitly not a gift! But the answer why does Croatia geographically look like this is because modern day Bosnia and Herzegovina used to be a part of Croatian Kingdom,, Ottoman empire is responsible for the modern day shape of Croatia and cultural diffusion of Bosnia and Herzegovina
The coast of lika yes, we can agree on. But the islands and zadar were 100% venetian, they identified as venetians and they spoke only venetian. Furthermore the architecture and cities were built entirely by venetians. When austria annexed the lands they favored croatians because they were scared of italian nationalism and revolts, while croatians were smaller and all inside their empire thus easy to control. That's why the Austrians helped the croatians to slavify the regions changing italian names and surnames to croatian and forcing them to learn croatian.
What Venetia has with Italians? Funny how iredentistic ideas are all around Croatia while we have none, or half assed ones born out of reaction to formers.

Thank you for your video. You understood correctly that the shape of today's Croatia is odd.
There are three points, I would like to highlight:
1. The share of tourism in the Croatian GDP, even by very generous measurements of the Croatian Ministry of Tourism - which encompasses all indirect effects too - exceeded at no time 19.6% of the GDP.
2. Croatia did not get a "gift" with Dalmatia being a part of it. Dalmatia is the cradle of Croatia's statehood. That's the territory were Croatian kings were crowned and where historically was the seat of the "Primas Croatiae". I think, historical sources are very rich about this and there is no need to elaborate further.
3. The historical reasons for the shape of today's Croatia:
Basically, the borders to Slovenia and Hungary as well as Serbia run along the ethnic line of divisions. The borders with Slovenia and Hungary, with some minor exceptions at times, are roughly thousand years old and go along to a good part with natural obstacles such as the rivers Mur, Drava and Danube (with today's Serbia) in the north or Sutla and Kupa in the west.
However, the borders with Bosnia and Herzegovina are a legacy of the centuries long Ottoman conquests. During the Turco-Croatian wars, the Kingdom of Croatia (at that time Croatian kings belonged first to the Anjou and from the 16th century to the Habsburg dynasties) lost territories to the Ottomans.
The peace treaties in the early 18th century between the Catholic powers of the Habsburg Empire and the Republic of Venice on one side and the Sublime Porte on the other, have cemented Croatia's borders there until the end of the Great War.
Why was Croatia under the Habsburg king not able to reclaim lost Croatian lands after the withdrawal of Ottoman forces from the provinces of Herzegovina, Bosnia and the Sanjak of Novi Pazar?
After all, as a consequence of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877/78 the situation looked favourable for the Habsburgs to kick out the Ottomans from the historical lands of the Kingdom of Croatia, whose rightful rulers they have been continuously since 1527.
At the Congress of Berlin in 1878 the Habsburgs obtained the right to administer the provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina and to man a garrison in the Sanjak of Novi Pazar, while those provinces remained formally Ottoman.
This, and the Hungarian ambitions to have the main say in the new provinces, were the main reason why a territorial reorganisation was not envisaged.
Croatian demands to unite those provinces with Croatia in spite of a strengthened Russian influence in the Balkan peninsula seemed not advisable at the time, although the historical Croatian claim was considered to be valid. Instead, the Habsburgs decided to disestablish the Croatian and the Slavonian Military Frontier and to reunite those lands with the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
During the Ottoman rule the ethnic structure of Bosnia and Herzegovina underwent considerable changes. Croats sought refuge in the non-occupied parts of Croatia, and survived the Ottoman expansion in greater numbers only in Central Bosnia and Western Herzegovina. The Serbs, who formerly mainly existed in the eastern and southern parts of the two provinces migrated to western and northern Bosnia.
However, a third distinctive group came into being. During the Turkish occupation a considerable part of Croats and Serbs converted to Islam and became this, what at the end of the 20th century would evolve into a Bosniak ethnicity.
The Bosnian Serb assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary ignited the Great War and meant the end of the Habsburgs as a great European dynasty.
In the interwar period the provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina were first reorganised in the new South Slavic state without an attempt to satisfy the national aspirations.
But in the face of the threat of Hitler's new European world order, an attempt to solve the Croatian question was contemplated, resulting in a new territorial organisation which meant that the lands with a Croatian majority were largely integrated into the autonomous province of Banovina of Croatia.
In Hitler's new European order, all of former Bosnia and Herzegovina was allotted to the war-time creation of the Independent State of Croatia.
After 1945, the Yugoslav communists decided simply to re-enact the Habsburg protectorate of Bosnia and Herzegovina as an administrative unit in the same way like the other socialist republics. The national identities were thought to be of subordinate importance for the politically conscious in a social-class based system.
When Yugoslavia collapsed, Bosnia and Herzegovina became the battle ground of three national aspirations, each of them fighting - at times - against each other.
The war ended inconclusive, with no nation satisfied with its outcome. The Dayton/Paris peace treaty established a de facto international protectorate, in nature even more complicated and experimental than the Habsburg administration, solving nothing, just freezing a conflict and leaving it to brew into the next war.
But if you are interested to know where the majority of Croats (or Serbs or Bosniaks) live in Bosnia and Herzegovina today, just find a map from the end of 1995 with the areas of control between Croatian, Serbian and Muslim forces after the signing of the Dayton/Paris Accords.

You seem to be quite pessimistic as to the future. I have the impression that you fear that war will break out again sooner or later. With Croatia already in the E.U. and with the prospect of Serbia and Bosnia joining them in the years to come, economic and cultural exchanges may eventually increase and, with goodwill on the 3 sides, peace may last. What does any of the three countries have to gain from war?
Obviously, the wounds of war take a long time to heal and I understand that hatred is still brewing, with ultra-nationalists, particularly in Serbia, adding fuel to the fire. But as EU member states have lived in peace so far, I hope and I believe that common sense will prevail.
@@paulsec8852 there will be no war in Balkan anymore. To talk about the possibility of war, you have to understand the circumstances the war took place first. Croatia is now part of NATO, have its's own military, it is internationally recognized which wasn't a case in 1991. Serbia (just as BiH) is also internationally recognized which means that other countries can also define its teritory just as what is not serbian teritory. Even if you look the criminal rate in these countries, you would find that it is pretty low. Only country with possibility of devoping some nationalistic tensions is BiH because it is multinacional but I strongly belive and know that there is not possible for war to be developed. Any war, of any kind, would destabilize economic situation and dispersed investments in all region, in which demographic and economic situation already ain't so pretty. And politicians with hands in power understand that.
Most of young people in our countries dgaf about nationalism anymore, only patriotism (like when our footbal represetation plays) and are proud to be what they are (or not haha). Also, many people living abroad calls anyone which language thay can understand "our" or "Balkan". In short - NO, there won't be wars in Balkan anymore.

Eh bien tu as de la chance parce que personnellement j'ai été arrêté 15 minutes à la frontière pour que l'on me fouille ma voiture jusque dans les enceintes et qu'on me déplie tout mes vêtements pour voir si il n'y avait pas de la drogue dedans. Après je ne suis pas passé exactement par la même route, je voulais aller voir un peu en Bosnie. Le truc c'est que c'est théoriquement la partie croate de la Bosnie et qu'il sont de base plutôt sympa.

je confirme ,il y a quelques années dans une liaison réguliere autocar entre dubrovnik mostar et sarajevo meme constat au niveau de la localié litorale bosniaque de neum( aucun controle)......seul un relatif arret de plusieurs minutes pour l 'entrée en bosnie herzégovine en direction de mostar( les douaniers n 'ont meme pas regardé les passport union européenne)

You hit the jackpot when you made connection betwean former Austrian and turkish boarder, but you failed to mention that it had normal shape prior to that in medieval times when it was independent kingdom with most of Bosnia and Herzegovina inside. And the fact that turks were there is the reason that those are now separate states. Quite a crucial part. And that Croatia got Dalmatia and Ragusa as a gift? Far fetched, it is way mor logicaly explained with what I just wrote up there.
b&h wasn't 'inside' croatia for any significant period of time lmfao. both croatia was a part of the bosnian medieval kingdom and bosnia a part of the croatian/croato-hungarian kingdom for short periods as these kingdoms shrunk and expanded. normal thing that happenned between bordering countries, especially with overlapping noble families that wouldn't care for national identity or borders over power, even if they lived in times where national identity was remotely relevant. such was the case all over europe.
arrival of turks had as much of an impact on bosnian borders/national identity only because there was already a distinct situation in bosnia before their arrival, religiously, geographically, politically, making the population more likely to accept islam than other areas that saw long-term occupation without nearly as much conversion.

I suggest you look up the Ottoman Turkish "Devshirme" policy translated as "child levy" or "blood tax". The Ottoman Turks took small Christian children away from their parents and converted them. This practice went on for centuries in Bosnia.

The muslim population in Greece was 50% in the 19th century. So Greece had a bigger muslim population than Bosnia then.
Bosnia was still a majority Christian country into the 18th century.
Even Sarajevo had a big Roman Catholic population until Prince Eugene of Savoy (Prinz Eugen) burnt it down in 1697 AD, during his great raid into Bosnia.
About 40,000 Catholics left Sarajevo & the surrounding area as they feared Ottoman Turkish revenge and went with Prince Eugene back into Croatia.

Well actually it was majority of serbs protecting the borders and thats where they ultimately settled before they got ethnically cleansed
Serbs came in run from Ottomans to what we call millitary frontier and yes they defended those places near border. It was not ethnic cleansing simply cause Serbian krajina authorities gave order to people to leave Croatia. Tuđman call them to stay but to be honest, after operation Storm our people made crimes in revenge so it may be smarter for them to leave. But it doesn't make whole operation crime and it wasn't ethnic cleansing. There is a lot videos, documents and Serbian conffesions claimed that civilians were ordered to leave. They even killed their own civilians while escaping in tanks... And now accusing us for ethnic cleansing. Transkript of Milošević talking goes: "less then 6000Croats defended Vukovar for three months and you can't defend Krajina for 24h with 30000 soldiers. Instead of that you run away and asking Yugo army for help. Even if we send you a help, army could not get there on time cause all roads are locked with civilians in run that you order. After Martić asked him what should he do cause Croatians forces coming, Milošević answered:"kill yourself". You know that this is true, this been played in Haggue and it is not some kind of secret. Everyone inerested can see this, and you still lying and accusing us. Ok, now fxxx off.

Just a note that further explains Croatia's peculiar shape - the historical "Croatia proper", now centered around Zagreb, has actually migrated to where it is now from the south during the country's thousand years of history. Originally, the core of Croatia lay in Lika and the hinterlands behind Zadar and Split, encompassing parts of today's Bosnia. As the kingdom developed and grew it first reached the Sava river, and then later the Drava river where contact with the Hungarians was established, thus delineating the broadest scope of the country as laying between Drava and the Adriatic.
The core of the country then started a slow migration from Dalmatia and its hinterlands up further into Lika and Bihać (today the northwesternmost part of Bosnia and Herzegovina), and later during the long wars with the Ottomans, Croatia came to lose its territories in the hinterlands of Dalmatia and Bihać (then capital) so the core of the country moved closer to Austria, settling in the area between Karlovac and Varaždin. With Zagreb the last remaining unconquered urban area of any economic, political and clerical importance, it naturally assumed the role of capital over the next couple of hundred years.

Cette incongruité remonte à 1699, date à laquelle la république de Raguse (aujourd’hui Dubrovnik) cède le port de Neum à l’empire Ottoman (alors suzerain de la Bosnie-Herzégovine) pour se protéger des ambitions de la république de Venise (qui possédait le Nord de la côte).
Donc c’est une frontière tout à fait artificielle à laquelle la Bosnie s’accroche dur comme fer alors que le port de Neum ne lui donne même pas accès aux eaux internationales…

Je trouve que les dégats géo-politiques causés par les Ottomans ne vont pas s'arranger avec des populations aussi perdues dans une floue idéntité réligieuse. La Yougoslavie était éssentiellement faible précisement par sa diversité culturelle..Sans Tito, les musulmans salafistes installés dans l'Albanie ont pu faire leur guèrre civile préparée facilement contre les serbes, les défénseurs de "l'union slave du süd".
Rectification, Neum n'est pas un port mais juste une station balneaire peuple a quasiment 95-100% de croates.

Je vois pas en quoi ce pont est illégitime. La Croatie n’a pas construit au dessus des zone maritimes bosnienne. Le pont est entièrement en Croatie et ne touche en aucun cas la Bosnie.
La Croatie est un pays souverain, ils ont le droit de construire ce qu’ils veulent, où il le veulent.

La seule raison pour laquelle le pont dérange les bosnien c’est que ca les arrange de récupérer un peu d’argent des touristes qui sont forcés de passer par la Bosnie.

The bridge bothers the bosnian unitarists who believe they would one day push the Bosnian Croats aside and build a freight port there to trade with islamic countries. Le pont pour aller à Dubrobnik m'a surpris vu le sujet de la frontière entre deux anciens pays de la Yougoslavie. La guèrre organisée depuis le Royaume-Uni et l'OTAN a fait une grosse casse sociale entre ce deux pays Croatie et Bosnie-Herzegovina autrefois, unis.
Mdr, origine Croate, jamais appris la langue malheureusement, mais j'ai toujours vu ce pont depuis tout petit a la plage juste à coté lors de nos vacances, me demandant pourquoi ça prenait autant de temps !
Update : j'y suis actuellement, j'ai pu voir et même touché le pont par au-dessus et en dessous x)
Le coin a l'air sympa pour faire du vélo, dommage que j'ai pas le mien de route sous la main, par contre depuis la plage de Komarna, j'ai nagé jusqu'aux piliers, ça s'adapte vite là-dessous, y a déjà des moules et autres coquillages partout sur la partie immergée ! xD
Tu as quel âge?? Le projet de pont a été d'abord initié en 2007 par les autorités croates avant d'être interrompu en 2012 en raison de la crise économique. En 2015, le premier ministre croate Zoran Milanovic annonce que le projet est relancé.
Cependant, le projet suscite l'opposition des autorités bosniennes, qui craignent que le pont gêne ou empêche le passage de navires à fort tonnage vers le port de Neum, un argument réfuté par le gouvernement croate qui assure que les caractéristiques techniques du pont sont faites de façon à permettre le passage de tout navire. Le gouvernement bosnien affirme, de position constante, que la construction du pont n'est pas possible tant que les deux pays n'ont pas réglé la question de façon bilatérale. La Bosnie-Herzégovine en a informé la Commission européenne dans une lettre en septembre 2017.
En juin 2017, malgré la controverse sur le sujet, la Commission européenne annonce qu'elle financera le pont de Pelješac à hauteur de 85 % de son coût.
En janvier 2018, la présidente croate Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic réaffirme que le pont présente une grande importance pour la Croatie et qu'il n'est pas dirigé contre les intérêts de la Bosnie-Herzégovine.
Le contrat pour la construction du pont est signé en avril 2018 entre le gouvernement croate et le consortium chinois China Road and Bridge Corporation . En réponse, le président du conseil des ministres de Bosnie-Herzégovine, Denis Zvizdic, annonce qu'il enverra une nouvelle lettre aux autorités européennes pour tenter d'empêcher la construction du pont.
Le Premier ministre croate Andrej Plenkovic a assisté le 29 juillet 2021 à l'inauguration du pont. l'ouverture à la circulation devrait se faire le 26 juillet 2022

Le pkus curieux c'est que les gens qui vivent dans ce petit morceau de téritoire bosnien sont des croates.
De part et d autres c est peuples de slaves catholiques qu on a assimilés aux croates par la suite puisque sans différences ethniques la religion a servi de différenciation.
Les slaves catholiques se sont définis comme croates surtout au XXeme siècle dans cette zone du sud et Tito à créé la nationalité "bosniaque" en partant des Serbes islamisés de Bosnie et du Sandjak serbe à côté

Croatia ( then part of Hungary & later Austria ) was invaded by the Ottoman Turkish Empire and after about 200 years of warfare the "Treaty of Karlowitz" of 1699 AD was signed after the Great Turkish war.
After 1945 the Yugoslav communist party decided to use Croatia war borders of 1699 AD as the basis of the Socialist Republic of Croatia ( some parts of Croatia ( & Dalmatia) from 1699 AD were annexed by Serbia and Montenegro after 1945).
After the fall of Yugoslavia the internal Yugoslav republic borders become the international borders.
Real reason is because Croatia lost Bosnia and Hercegovina during Otoman war in Europe. Bosnian muslim have Croatian origins.
