    Greatly appreciate you posting this video. I am rebuilding this same caliper. At 1:44, you make a glaring mistake. You point at the hole that the rear wheel axle passes through, saying that was where the "swing arm pivot" goes. At 5:05 you talk about not wanting to gouge the metal with the O-ring hook. I suggest the use of wooden toothpicks for this sort of work, and for digging crud out of crevices, to prevent scratching and gouging the metal and / or finish.

    Awesome video! Seems pretty straightforward. I've got a piston on my 16 road king that will not slide back in, even when using a spreader tool.

    Thanks Shane , I did my brothers breaks today the pistons are stuck I have done caliper rebuilds in the past on the single pistons . I told my brother it has to be the same on the 4 piston . I just ordered a kit , now I will order new brake shoe pins and anti vib clip . they looked ok , but had burs and chafing. ordered a new rotor his was 30 thousands out guess that is why his pads wore funny . 50,000 miles on a twin cam it is just now falling apart or well broke in .

    • @How2Wrench

      These brakes (old and new designs) really have and unfair advantage. Their small size and super exposed design (as compared to an auto/truck being tucked in under the wheel more) have a big job and surely don't last long. They are often over looked maintenance item too...

    Great video...I'm having some rear brake issues on my 06 street glide...i recently replaced my master cylinder and bleed the lines till the fluid was crystal clear on the way out with no air bubbles...took it for a ride, when left the house the brake was rock solid right when I pressed the pedal, then it got softer after parking the bike for a few hours, then during the next ride I lost pressure completely right after pulling away from the driveway...i went back and didnt see fluid on the pavement and felt the line and didnt feel any fluid leaks...any idea what might be the issue?

    Video makes total sense, and has worked well for my factory calipers, however, on my 2020 FLHX w/ABS, If I am installing a new set of front (chrome) calipers would I follow the following procedure to bleed the brakes? THANK YOU ! !
    1. Remove existing front left caliper
    2. Install new front left caliper
    3. Remove front master cylinder cap
    4. Squeeze front brake lever to push caliper cups towards rotor
    5. Now bleed front left caliper
    The above sequence makes sense (my assumption) because Im trying to fill the caliper with fluid prior to bleeding.
    Make sense?
    Thanks again!
    Love your videos!!

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  4 роки тому

      I'll be honest...I don't have access to 2020 model manuals and would want to look into for sure. When it comes to ABS, I've seen procedures where the ABS motor must be locked (or computor bypassed) to bleed properly. You have me curious...😀Its on my list now...

      @How2Wrench  2 роки тому +1

      I'm the intern studying under Shane. I grabbed Shane quick and he said that they are reusable at times. The two things he said to consider are:
      1. How old are they? And just because the bike 2000 doesn't mean their that old as it was most likely worked on before.
      2. They are cheap compared to no brakes when needed. 😁

    Are the high-pressure seals directional? I was told there is a lip on the hp seal and it goes to the inside towards the fluid but when I did mine yesterday I couldn’t tell a difference either way. Another thing if you don’t have the lubricant from Harley Davidson is there anything else you can use besides brake fluid? I use brake fluid in my Pistons were very difficult to get back in.

      Alex Lynch tricky question.,.. add about 1 hour too brake pad replacement... At about 15 minutes for bleeding depending on your equipment... Add about 30 minutes for complete flush,.. at about 15 minutes for cleaning Reservoir.... At about. ???? If it has abs. If you haven't done them lately or a bunch of them... Add about 1 hour.??? If you're actually learning on the job do it cheap... Considering you're getting paid for practicing..??? Use a stopwatch but you can't charge for parts soaking. !!! You will not know if you have bad slide pins bad Pistons Bad boars
      .. heavy corrosion till after your way into it.??? This is why people do it their selves... And shops will only install a new caliper. !!! But if you have to do it 2 or 3 times it's cheaper than the shop and a new caliper Plus you get your experience for free.....

      I'm the intern studying under Shane. I'm going to watch this video right now and learn what he said as to why! One of these days I hope to move from the office to the shop!
      He has a few other tricks up his sleeve he plans on making videos on. If you need help sooner choose and option below!
      That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily!
      He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones.
      There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. Links to each are below. Hope this message makes sense to you as a decent human being that also works for a living and gets it!
      Make it a great day!

    I have a 2000 sportster with the same style caliper, I dont know why but the the manual said to loosen but not remove the caliper body bolts prior to removing the back wheel for a tire change, so I did. now I'm not able to get pressure. I checked the master cylinder per one of your videos and I have pressure all the way to the back banjo bolt, but no brakes. I also pushed the pistons back in to help with wheel installation. what gives?

      Just a thought, is there any fluid leaking around your brake pads? If so, remove your caliper, disassemble it and check the cross over o-rings. Refer to video at 7:23. If even one fell out, and isn't seated properly, will cause the caliper to fail.

      @@BayouOgre I got it I went about bleeding them with just a hose on the bleeder. I bought a simple catch canister, put a a little fluid in the canister and finally got brakes! The fluid in the canister must have helped create a little more vacuum. Thanks for your reply!

      Ahhh, you had air in your line. The catch cannister with fluid in it, makes sure that the line doesn't suck air back into the line. You must have released the brake lever before locking down the bleeder screw. Common mistake for first timers. Now, they have Russell Speed Bleeders, every one I've asked, who use these, have high praise for them.
