Coat of Many Colours
Tennessee Mountain Home
Why'd you come in here looking like that?"
Here You Come Again
Jolene
Dolly was once asked how she felt when Whitney Houston gets credit for “I will always love you”. Her response was classic. “It doesn’t bother me, just as long as I get the check” Gotta love Dolly
Conan O'Brian asked if she was jealous of Whitney's huge success with the song. Dolly's response was ''Jealous? Hell no! Whitney made me so much money I'm gonna name a ride after her at Dollywood''.
Dolly also said she was driving when the radio station played Whitney singing the song. She said she had to pull over. Dolly is a savvy business woman.
She helped a lot of artists .. She is really down to earth!God bless u more, Dolly. U rock my forever fav.
Whitney wanted to buy the publishing rights for the song before she released it, and Dolly refused to sell... most clever move!
Elvis wanted to record it but wanted half ownership Dolly turned it down
Dolly has more talent in her tiny little finger than most artists have in their whole bodies. She is a legend!
Definitely 💯
Wrote only one song worth mentioning
I mean this as acomplement; = Dolly Prton ahse a lot more tallent in her, than some of today's sigers have dirt under their finger nails. Dolly, when we came to the U.S. in the 1960s, I've seen you for thefirst time, when you were in the Porter Wagener Show. We hardly could talk the English than, but my mother was simly charmed. Later on, I came to know, what such a multy tallent you are, and in details, your life. That, tha's what kind of people we need now these days. Pass on the goodness Dolly? - God be with you, on this day - God be with you every day.
Dolly has more talent in her body than I have in my little finger! Wait... 😂
@@TNT-km2eg And what would that be, mister songwriter?
Dolly Parton is a total genius. She wrote Jolene and I will always love you in one evening.
Dolly Part one and two
The people I worked with was totally shocked when I told them that Dolly Parton wrote I Will Always Love You. They didn't believe me. I told them she wrote it for Porter Wagoner when she was leaving his show. They were saying no way and I told them to look it up on the internet. They were totally amazed. They thought that Whitney Houston wrote it. I love Dolly Parton she is the best and I remember watching the Porter Wagoner show when she sang that song. Whitney Houston had an amazing voice but Dolly sang that song better than anyone because that song came from her heart. She is a great singer and a great human being! God bless her!
True! Elvis wanted to sing it but, Col. Parker wanted 50%. Dolly said no!!! I would have loved Elvis version! We'll never know! Love Dolly's coat of many colors, and many more! ❤️ Dolly!
Fun fact: during filming of The Bodyguard another song was going to be used, I'm not sure which one, but it got scrapped so I Will Always Love You was suggested by Kevin Costner. Whitney had never even HEARD it before.
I’ll take Dolly over Whitney any day!
Dolly sings this song with emotion, Whitney sings it with vocals. I prefer Dolly's version.
@@nathalie_desrosiers you gotta have soul to feel Whitney Houston’s version
Dolly Parton must have broken the world record for writing the most songs! An amazing human, who has written a treasure for the world for many many years to come! We adore you dear Dolly!
She probably doesn't break that record. If she breaks any song writing record, it'll be the most emotive songs written.
Guinness book states that Carol King holds this record.
@@katherinetaylor9886 Wow, I was sure it would be Steve Allen. All 3 have written 1000s
In a 2001 article, it was reported that Dolly had written over 5,000 songs. I am pretty sure she has expanded that number in the last 21 years.
Dolly doesn't break any records because if she does, she won't be able to sell them. 😁
When most people look at Dolly's big hair, big personality, and wild costumes they tend to forget or not realize what a beautiful songwriter that she is. She is a true poet. My favorite song of hers is "Tennessee Mountain Home". Her lyrics makes you able to visualize what the song is about. I like her song "Joshua", too. "Coat of Many Colors" just touches my heart. Nobody has ever said anything bad about her. Rather rare in the entertainment business where everyone wants to bring you down.
It's funny when you say that mist people look at Dolly's big hair and personalitty! Most people look her big big...milk company of the US.
A poet and just the sweetest lady.

@@mixaliskokkinos1496 One of my favourite Dolly quotes: "They're all mine - and I have the receipts to prove it!" Got to love a lady who can say things like that!
Dolly is a legendary storyteller in her songs.
Dolly is one of those rare celebrities that are extremely talented, genuinely a lovely person, and no one who has interacted with her seems to have an unkind thing to say about her.
Plus her singing just seems effortless
I agree with all you said about MISS Dolly Parton 1❗❗❗❗❤💕💞🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🇨🇦
This is the best thing
Not to mention she was so naturally pretty- she looked the best in the 70s. Idk if it was the hairstyles? Much more flattering than her 80s hair
Dolly Parton is a timeless songwriting machine.
Dolly is a music genius. She is amazing. God gave us a gem!
I love all her songs 'Like a butterfly ' & 'Two doors down', & 'He's Alive' & '9 to 5', 'Jolene' and goodness just so many.
Youngest of four, 1970s my Mother giggled as I bossed her around (age 4) to put the radio in the window, on the right station and then let me just swing & sing in our backyard for hours until lunch. 😊
My favorite Dolly Parton song is "Hard Candy Christmas". The song had special meaning for me because it's about loss. I know it's about the women at the chicken ranch singing about what they'll do with their lives once the ranch was closed but it's also about the end of an era. I remember hearing it played on the radio the Christmas after my mother died. I didn't know what to do with myself--I just wanted to run away and hide somewhere because nothing was ever going to be the same. It truly was like the door had closed on my past.
Dolly does a wonderful version of the song, but she didn’t write the music nor the lyrics.
It was written by Carol Hall.
thats another really good one!
I love Hard Candy Christmas too. It’s my favorite Christmas song.
She’s an exceptional human being and a legend in music
"My Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. We love you, Dolly!
I love coat of many colours and here you come again...... absolutely brilliant songs 😇
Just a mediocre song with diabetic lyrics
If you're religious then yeah it's pretty fantastic
My grandfather loved that song and used to sing it to me while I followed him doing chores on the farm.
@@bj.reo87 You might want to listen to the song before commenting on it. It's a story from her childhood.
Dolly is a National Treasure, I just love her. ❤️
@ashley1994 national like she or he said who cares if she was so beautiful she wouldn’t be plastic
For me, I can't pick just one. "I Will Always Love You", "Here You Come Again", and "Heartbreaker" are my favorites. She is a national treasure for sure. As someone already mentioned, no one has had anything bad to say about her. She is a pure soul and an amazing songwriter and singer.
Actually, of the three songs you mention, Dolly only wrote one of them. "Here You Come Again" was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill and "Heartbreaker" was written by Carole Bayer Sager and David Wolfert.
Her version of 'Go tell it on the mountain and 'Mary did you know' are my favs as well as "He's Alive"...
Dolly, as many have noted here, is a genuine national treasure. She’s a phenomenal poet, which is why her lyrics can pierce your very soul. I absolutely love her.

Don Henley from the Eagles said that too. He was talking about the Duet they did of When I Stop Dreaming originally from the Louvin Brothers.
Some people come to this earth to do what they're meant to do, period. Dolly is one of those people. Amazing! 👏 👏 👏
Everyone does what they're meant.
Amazing woman, songwriter, singer, patriot, and standard-bearer of love for all.
I feel she is underestimated and sometimes even ignored by people of her talent. The stereotype of bombshell does her no justice. But she's super chill with all her songs as long as she got paid for the copyrights haha, and she did a lot of charity for her town!!
I grew up listening to Dolly, and to me she has always transcend genres. She's done so much for society and the world is better because of Dolly.
Me too! I have always loved Dolly. It's gotten to the point that when I see her I begin to tear up. I adore Dolly!

Dolly as a human being...... you're such a "class" act. You are soooo loved!
She is a musical genius, one of a handful of people who can claim this. ❤❤❤
5:02 - - "If you want the rainbow - you've got to part with the rain." Wow - I like that.
One thing not advertised was that, after the heartbreaking & devastating fires the wiped out many TN homes a few yrs ago, not only did Dolly rebuild Dollywood and the surrounding resort areas to keep the economy for her people, she also gave EACH FAMILY a large amt to rebuild their homes. All without fanfare and with great Love.
Growing up in Nashville we loved Dolly and watched her for decades! She's a multi-talented superstar!!! A real gift to the world!!!
I've loved Dolly Parton since the first time I saw her on her show way back in the 70's. She never disappoints.

Dolly Parton has written over 3000 songs! What a prolific person!
Dolly is an amazing person. Smart, humble and kind hearted woman!
Hey how are you doing today..?
Dolly is like the only artist that can make me ball my eyes out at how beautiful the lyrics are.
@ashley1994 nah duh idiot you are complaining over a word who cares
@ashley1994 bro I was just saying... Like, its not a big deal. I wouldnt have comented that if I knew my improper grammer would offend you so much. Plus, im dyslexic so I have a VERY hard time spelling words correctly and I often mix up which words are correct to use in the right context.
Okay, whatever you say Ashley ashy skin. Sounds like someone got rejected by the writing academy so they decided to become a grammar police.
I feel the same way about The Judds and I'm not a country fan in general. But I love them and Dolly.
Yea, Patches made me cry my eyes out!
There are not enough words to describe Dolly Parton. She is an extremely talented song writer. She is strong in her faith. She is kind, compassionate, and loving. You never hear anyone saying an unkind word about Dolly.
Well, the tabloids have said very cruel things about Dolly, but not the people who love her from afar, and those who know her in person. Tabloids are just jealous and have to sell stories.
I did know Dolly wrote all of these. I am nearly 57 years old, and she was one of the only female artists my mother really lived. She was always a staple in my life.
Dolly and Carole King honestly wrote every single song ever
Don't forget Neil Diamond.
….and Willie Nelson
And Diane Warren
And Elton John.
...and Barry Gibb.
I love Dolly..... She just radiates energy.

She is a National treasure! Extraordinary and proficient singer-songwriter, and a fine actress. Faced so many trials and yet coming out triumphant every time.
@ashley1994 you are so weird
The land of national treasures
I've always loved "I Will Always Love You". If I want to cry, I listen to Dolly's version. If I want to belt out in my car, I listen to Whitney's version. Joleen is also one of my favorites... the fact they were written practically the same night, stuns me.
@ashley1994 joleen they can spell it how they want to
@ashley1994 Aren't you a little ball of sunshine... Sorry, I didn't spell it right. "Shitney." Um, is that supposed to be clever? It's not, but nice try, though. Yes, her version is terrible... that's why it was NUMBER ONE on the Billboard Hot 100 for an unprecedented 14 weeks and sold over 20 million copies and was the number one song internationally... but it was the "worst version" according to you. Right. I can't wait to see where else you've got the pulse of entertainment so surely locked in.
@ashley1994 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@ashley1994 Oh, honey... no. Just... no. No one is obsessed with you besides you.
@ashley1994 Oh Karen...
I love Dolly and everything that she has ever done. But, my absolute favorite is her "Coat of Many Colors" and it makes me cry every time I hear it.
Yes. Coat of many colours i just can't hear that song without crying .
I am not a country music fan but that song just breaks me.
One of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time!
My favourite Dolly song is Light Of A Clear Blue Morning - it is helping me through my cancer treatments.
💜 PLEASE TAKE GOOD CARE, SENDING YOU HEALING HUG'S & PRAYER'S 🙏☺️✝️💜💜💜
Light of a Clear Blue Morning is my favorite too! It has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever. Praying for you during this time. I hope you can feel the light.
May God bless and heal you.
I hope you are well and thriving 🕊
Want to know how strong Dolly's music is? Just the little snippets still get a tear from me. She is a treasure to music.
The Coat of Many Colors is my all time favorite of Miss Dolly. I knew all these songs were hers, but then I have listened to all her music throughout my life and have followed all the songs she has written. Just like Johnny Cash.
I have to say my favorite song of Dolly’s is Jolene. I remember hearing it in the car and thinking that the singer had the voice of an Angel!
Mine too!!
💗🦋I love that y’all put her Uncle Billy on here. I got to see him play and my Daddy loved camping along side him. We just liked living and are fans of all her work. Everyone in the south is so thankful for our raising and all the lyrics she wrote and how she told the story of so many of us then and now.
Dolly Parton = National Treasure.

More reasons to admire & respect Dolly Parton. She is a national treasure.
Dolly is a national treasure.
“ coats of Many Colors “.. , yet always my favorite by Dolly Parton, “ I Will Always Love You “
I Love ❤ all your songs Dolly Parton.
Here’s a memory “ Say Forever You’ll be Mine “ sang with Porter Wagoner. And she also sings it solo. Dolly Parton’s song “ I Will Always Love You “ is a song written for Porter Wagoner when Dolly fulfilled her contract, which she is very grateful for having the opportunity to perform with Porter Wagoner; and the time came for Dolly Parton to move on to become an amazingly stunning solo singer artist.
Dolly is my favourite entertainer of all time and I especially love her Blue Grass music. Dolly is a masterful song writer and a beautiful soul. God Bless You Dolly and thankyou for providing the soundtrack for so many lives.
@ashley1994 you are literally so annoying it’s weird acting like the grammar police it’s blue grass and thankyou
If you really, truly listen to these songs you will know they are Dolly. Dolly has a slow easy feel to her songs. A voice that no on can duplicate.
Throghthe decades, only one, just one country singer came close, to your style humane passionate feeling and abilities. Reba Mcentire. Talk about aa millone to 1?? Now that's what I call, rare tallent!
My favorite Dolly song is off of her "Treasures" album from 1996.. The song is Just when i needed you most.. It will get you every time..
Dolly Parton is an icon - living legend / I love Jolene 💛💛💛💛
Dolly Parton: “You never do a whole lot unless you’re brave enough to try.”
What people who don't know her, the striking thing is the quality of the singers that picked her to write a song for them or for the movie they'll appear in. Her songs by Emmylou Harris, Tina, Hank Williams Jr and even the one by Sinead was perfect.
What also needs to be a standout is that no matter the caliber of those singing her songs, including 'I Will Always Love You', she was brilliant enough to never give up the rights and royalties to it. Besides her huge vocals it has to be noted her savy and brilliance as a business woman. It's been estimated that $200 million of her nearly $600 million net worth are the monies strictly earned through rights and royalties. 🎶🎶🎶
Dolly really is a very smart business woman! As well as a brilliant song writer!
She writes songs for who she thinks best fits the song they don’t ask her to write song they presents the song to the artist and the artist choose if they want the song or not
Love Dolly's (w/Nickel Creek) cover of Collective Soul's Shine.
Favorite written by her: Love is Like a Butterfly
Anyone remeber her Breeze detergent commercials....there's a towel in every box...? I was a little kid and wanted my Mom to buy it so bad 🤣 to get a towel.

She also wrote "Kentucky Gambler" by Merle Haggard.
I love Dolly Parton and my favorite song by her is “ Coat of many colors” ✨💙✨
Dolly Parton is a phenomenal artist and multi talented.i love her music and vivacity.❤
These past few year she has been getting her just recognition as a writer. For the longest time when the phrase singer-songwriter was applied to a woman it was all about pop stars, or rockers. But Dolly, and to a lesser extent Loretta, were doing it in the 69s and 70s.
Dolly Parton in incredibly talented
My favorite is "Wildwood Flower." It's a song that clearly vocalizes my spiritual aspirations and longing to be free.
Dolly didn't write wildwood flower.
I love all Dolly's songs! They bring tears to my eyes!
This is the second time I've heard Hank Williams Jr. sing "I'm in No Condition" and his voice still blows me away!!! it's LOVELY!!
She is a goddess. Would never say she is, but IS none the less. If I was able to meet any person on earth, Dolly would be #1!
My most favorite Dolly Parton song is "Coat Of Many Colors" from her early years.
I love Sinead O'Connor's version of "Like a Dagger Through the Heart" and Emmylou's version of "To Daddy." Not included here are "The Grass is Blue" by Norah Jones and "Little Sparrow" by Bettye Lavette.
You guys could do an episode on Dolly's duets/trios as well. Her recordings with Porter Waggoner, Kenny Rogers, and Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt are legendary but there are many more.
I grew up near where Dolly was from. I was born at home and half raised in a coal camp. My Daddy was a miner, and Mommy was a stay at home Mom who worked every bit as hard as Daddy raising six kids. If we were poor we never knew it. We also were happy and although we didn't get many fancy toys, we cherished the love our parents gave more than anything. We made our own toys and i think it helped us all throughout our lives. Dolly is one of the greatest talents ever and i am glad she made it big.
My favourite Parton song is still I Will Always Love You. I loved Dolly's original recording and learned it off by heart long before Whitney covered it. Dolly's version came up on the radio this evening and I was struck by how much meaning and sincerity she puts into the lyrics - way more than Whitney does in her powerful recording, although I admit she certainly sings it beautifully.
I agree, Dolly’s original version far surpasses Whitney’s for me, it’s haunting and full of emotion whereas Whitney’s cover was way overblown.
Me too. I loved Dolly's long before Bodyguard was even a twinkle in the stars of it could be cast. What's also lost is that Whitney Houston wasn't the original want by producers to do the show. They wanted Diana Ross. They(including Costner) voiced concerns about Whitney's lack of acting on her resume.
Nothing against Whitney but as many have said Dolly and also Linda Ronstadt’s versions capture the plaintive emotions of the song better. It’s a tender moment, not a screeching for the world to hear moment.
Yes. Dolly's original version is very good and haunting. But Whitney's version knocks it out of the park. Even Dolly has said so.
@@jeffreylindahl5895 Purely vocally, yes.
I like the Butterflies song. It was on a very very famous sitcom in the UK in the seventies. I didn't know Partin wrote it till decades later but it's so very pretty.
My favorite song is Coat of Many Colors, duet Islands in the Stream, and soundtrack song 9 to 5 (boy did I live that song in the late 90s).
My favorite song is Jolene
It kinda rhymes with my first name 😄
There are very few or any like Dolly in all aspects of her song writing, singing, the way she has lived her life ……she is a American treasure and all my respect to her
Dolly is so phenomenally talented. Songwriting is superb right along with her personality and singing. She is one smart lady.
Hey how are you doing….?
I'd describe her as a modern-day 'Renaissance Woman'. I heard that she gets up at some unGodly hour, and the first thing that she does is say a prayer of Thanksgiving to the Lord. Then she writes, writes, and writes some more. She is incredibly prolific. I think I read that she wrote no less than THREE top-selling songs in one day! She is also an incredibly generous philanthropist, a genius of a businesswoman, and has a keen eye for investment. Don't judge a book by its cover; Dolly is indeed "one smart lady"!!!
Smoky mountain memories is my favorite. Hits the tear ducts each time!
More reasons to love Dolly Parton. 😊

She is so talented and seems to actually be a decent human being
I met Dolly at a country music venue many years ago, and she was so sweet and gracious to a shy kid. We talked for about 15 minutes. She had to

She built her theme park, Dollywood, to take care of her family. Most of the employees are her direct family.
Excellent choice!!!
Jolene will always be one of my favorites.
