Remember Mahito can't touch Yuji's soul without pissing off Sukuna, and Yuji can actually hit Mahito's soul with his cursed energy directly damaging him so he's actually one of the few sorcerers able to take on Mahito in a fight

There's also a fan theory that "You take it from here" were the exact same last words Haibara said to Nanami, 10 years prior. That's why Nanami had that imaginary dialogue and hesitated before saying it to Yuji. Especially considering Haibara and Yuji have very similar personalities, so Nanami didn't want to project the image of his friend onto Yuji
