I really like the all white cabinets in craft rooms nowadays with all of the color coming in through paper and other craft items, BUT I really like your SO MUCH BETTER! I absolutely LOVE the warmth that the wood countertops brings into your room! It’s by far my favorite craft room I’ve seen on UA-cam!
I have an IKEA about 45 min away and I had shopped for things when I first moved into my current home. This home was perfect because when I bought it the upstairs has 2 bedrooms....I claimed one to sleep in and one to craft in! So, the hallway that connects the 2 rooms was a bare space with window in the middle. I measured and 2 Billy bookcases fit on each end and I found a low TV type unit with drawers that fit perfectly under the window. I mean there is barely a paper width between these furniture pieces! So the piece under the window serves as a window seat! I bought a Dreambox for the main room and have tons of second hand storage pieces scattered all over. One of my main tables I was using was just a table with fold-out legs and it bothered me that I couldn’t put anything under so after watching your last video about the Alex drawers, I found 2 similar units (7 drawers, 4” each) on Amazon for almost half the cost. My manager is re-doing her office so I “trashpicked” an 8 ft. Countertop from her to put over my new drawer units and I’ll be able to store a bunch of stuff underneath!! Ty for the inspiration!! You have a beautiful space! ❤️🦋💜
Holy cow, how big is that room? I would love such a large space. At least it appears large. I went to Ikea today but was quickly overwhelmed. I need to clear out my space and get exact measurements before deciding what to get. Love the inspiration and why's behind some of your choices!
Thanks so much! Yes, the room is pretty big, almost the entirety of our basement area. And yes, IKEA can be quickly overwhelming so it is good to go with a plan.
I love your studio. I live in atlanta suburb so really close to an ikea. I too have bought many items not designed for how I use them. Your renovation series was fun to watch and looks wonderful🥰
I've had Billy bookcases ever since Ikea opened years ago. They work so well for many storage needs. Your room is beautiful. I have several Kalax units because they are just rignt for my fabric storage and sewing books
I so enjoyed your video. You gave so many useful ideas...and things to watch out for. Great video...fantastic craft room!! I also have an IKEA about 10 minutes from my house! I feel so lucky!!
I hear you on the Kallax units. I had them for craft storage but each cubby typically fit 1.5 storage bins of the size that works for my supplies, so I was wasting lots of space. Billy wasn't quite deep enough, so I ended up with two Bestå TV units stacked on top of each other. I love that you have glass doors on your Billy book cases. They look fabulous!
The Bestå line is a great option for something a little deeper! I am really glad I splurged on the glass doors. It feels like it adds a layer of protection, but also makes it feel a little fancier :)
Thank you for the info. I am currently redoing my sewing room with Ikea. Live 4 hours away from one (Yuck). I have one piece now and looking at buying 3 book cases, two with glass and a another desk. Love the idea of wall paper in the back of the shelves. Road trip in 2 weeks.
Love all your Ikea ideas, I just recently redid my smal 10x10 craft room after retiring from nursing w mostly Ikea and The Dream Box. I have so much more organization total game changed have found items I had packed away becuase there was no room before. Now I love creating in my new space. I live quite a distance away from my Ikea so paid to have it delivered. It was not that much and was so worth it to me, not having to load unload all those heavy boxes. They dilivered it right to my garage and I didn't have to hurry to put it all together, so you girls that live far away check on having it shipped to you if available...was so worth it to me. I shopped everything online. I waited and waited like 4 months for the Billy bookcases to come in and they never did so went w a diferent stlye that was more expensive and shelves were adjustable.
My closest IKEA store is 260 miles away (bummer!), but I will get there some day! I LOVE how you put in the gray wall paper on the back of the Billy bookcases. Really gives it a nice look -- classy I think. Thanks for all this great information!
@@anexceleratedlife lol! Exactly!! It is way to much and you can’t find what you need and almost always can’t find your way out! Get IKEA online folks- trust us!!!
I have a 5 x 5 Kallax that I got second hand, like new! I have one row of doors & one row of drawers. I changed the knobs for faux crystal knobs. Warning on buying thrifted inserts: I bought a 2 drawer insert from Facebook marketplace. It fits the Kallax just fine, but was actually from the predecessor of the Kallax, so is a slight shade darker in color. What is holding up your counter top over your Alex drawers? Your craft room looks great! 😊❤
This is one of the best craft room design videos I have seen-thank you for being so detailed with your pros and cons. I do have a question- how did you add the desktop in the space with the wide Alex drawer units and the small one in the middle? Is it attached to the wall? How is it supported? I'm looking at changing my desk area and want it to be a standing desk. I need lots of drawers. Thank you.
I have two Kallax units which measure 4 by 4 cubes. I thought a lot of my space was wasted until I bought the 4 shelf inserts for my 12 by 12 papers. I will now look at the Billy bookcases for my stamp cases since again there is a lot of vertical space wasted. I have 5 of the Skadis peg boards and love how I can add various accessories to hang and store.
Enjoyed your video! I would like to know where you purchased the plastic containers inside your Billy cabinets? They fit perfectly. I like the height of them as well, for my Spellbinders kits, stamps and card stock. Thank you!
Thanks for this detailed description of items you chose and why. I like how the IKEA items look, but I like the Lowe’s items due to the price difference and the fact that they’re assembled. In comparing the Lowe’s vs. IKEA, do you think they both hold up well?
I do think they both hold up pretty well, although I do not have too many pieces from Lowes, except for the cabinetry at the back of my new craft studio.
IKEA is too far away from where I live. I have a non-IKEA craft room. I had a construction man assemble most of my craft room with cabinets from a local cabinetry place even less expensive than Home Depot, plus he installed everything for me…again less expensive than Home Depot. Nothing is perfect, but I’m able to function & live very well with the cabinets. I chose 2 large islands with casters to be able to shift around some. I’m happy however because of health reasons, I need to organize more of my things in the room as of now. Thanks for your craft room tour & tips. Very pretty & functional for you.
that is a good fit for you because your craft room is bigger than mine I have a craft room well I share my craft room with my cat and other things so I had to piece mine together so I can fit it all in
I looked at the Kalax units (completely unavailable) for my craftroom and decided on two of the 4x4 storage units from Target. They were less expensive as well. I ordered two shallow drawer units from Wayfair instead of Ikea for the same reason. I also have them in a desk configuration.
They're soo much cheaper at Target! And honestly i can't tell the difference in the ones I had gotten a while back for like a 4th of the cost of the ikea ones. And that's a fourth the cost for those on the mainland. I don't even know if we could get ikea shipped here but if we can i can guarantee it costs as much for the shipping as the furniture itself lol
I finally have my craft \art room together and ironically, I have a kallax unit I got from marketplace. I would've preferred billy bookcases, but I couldn't find any for when I needed them. I also have Liatorp bookcases that I invested in two years ago with glass doors that I LOVE- but we ended up using them in our bedroom and our living room instead of the craft room that I intended them for lol. I love your setup!
Love that the IKEA pieces can be used in multiple places in your house. And hey, if you get a good deal on them, it is hard to pass up things on Facebook marketplace.
I love that you saved $1,000 by getting cabinetry at Lowe's! Are your countertops the pre-fab butcher block from Lowe's as well and did you install yourself? Also, do you have a floorplan showing the layout of your full room? Thanks for the video!
Do you mind me asking what size are your Billy bookcases please? I look & get overwhelmed & can't visualise whats online with a real space if that makes sense?! I love your craft room. Watched the video ages ago but just revisited it as desperate to sort a craft space! Thank you
Gosh I really really am wishing I had just invested in some really really tall bookcases with the glass doors like that. Ah man. Because 1. My short bookcases do not utilize my space vertically and now with my 16mo old sharing the space as a play room etc. I def. Need to be utilizing all space possible but 2. More importantly is the doors, ahhh man, I really wish I had gotten anything with doors! Brilliant. Not just dust and cat furr protecting but safe and protecting for my 16mo old! Darn. I've been trying to think of some crafty way to cover my bookcases when my sons in the room so he doesn't get into all of my craft supplies.... the best I've come up with was foam boards over the fronts... yeah.. anyways, doors. Very smart. Lol!
Isn't it bizarre that the 2 Alex drawers are different heights? It drives me crazy! I wanted to line mine up as well and realized the difference in height. I've seen where other crafters have used the space at the top as a little cubby instead of raising the height at the bottom. I use different kallax units and have 6 Alex units!

What I hate the most about buying from IKEA is how difficult the instructions are for assembling! Just drives me crazy.
I kind of have gotten use to how they format things, so it has starting making sense to me. Probably a symptom of having SO much IKEA in my house 😂
I think they have some of the easiest
There's usually someone on UA-cam, who does an assembly video. That's how I assembled my Alex 😊
