First time I’ve seen these goals since being at the match 41 years ago! Bloody hell seems just like yesterday. Where do all the years go? Better times.
I remember this goal VERY VERY well. Viewed from the Fulwell End, I looked up just in time to see Hawley collect the ball, turn and shoot. It was UNBELIEVABLE. Most Sunderland goals were well-worked with great assists rather than a belter from thirty yards so this like something from the World Cup and sent the crowd into ecstasy. Again, I've not seen this for forty years!! I had no idea until now watching in slow motion in 2020 that he'd backheeled the ball into his path before shooting. I wasn't a massive John Hawley fan to be honest but he scored one of Sunderland's best ever goals that day!
Was in Roker End as soon as JH hit that ball I was jumping goal I could see the ball swerving and Jennings would have no chance, JH said of his goal as he had just come back from a bad injury he was so knackered he couldn't run anymore so he took a chance, what a goal.
John Hawley lived down the road from me in Cleadon Village, used to see him walking to the paper shop smoking like a chimney! How things have changed. I was in the clock stand seats towards the Fulwell end that day, a christmas treat for me and my brother from and with my dad. So i was behind and to the left of his goal. Amongst many football memories this one is still vivid in my mind.

Don Howe (Arsenal manager) bought Hawley not long after to replace Frank Stapleton. Didn't quite work out.
Understatement of the year!
Good goal off me old mate Arnott quality
Is that why we signed Hawley?
