    I love the rendering and compression of longer focal lengths. I have a 90mm Zeiss Sonnar which is amazing. Also, I shoot lots of vintage glass on my Fuji digitals, most of them 50mm, with the crop sensor, that equals 75mm. For portraits, I often shoot with a Jupiter-11, which is a 135mm prime.

    You say at 02:34: "Even at f/1.25 the lens is resolving 40 lp/mm at over 60% contrast";
    nope: as you can see on the MTF chart, the transferred modulation at the spacial frequency of 40 cycles per mm is *under* 60% at every picture height for both sagittal and tangential split orientations. So nowhere in the frame you see a contrast of over 60% for 40 lp/mm at f/1.25, according to Leica itself.
    On the other hand, this Noctilux-M 1,25/75mm at f/2.0 becomes - MTF-wise - kind of comparable to the Zeiss Otus 85mm at f/1.4, which is quite an achievement indeed given its relatively compact size. Compact for a 1,25/75mm, of course :)

    forgot one point in my earlier comment: the foot is also necessary if you use the visoflex 3 on the camera, remember on these any acc. added after the visoflex has a foot on it, so the rig is balanced aka when using older bellows or the telyt telephoto lenses on this system.
    Also if the foot is used the lens is not going to 'crash' into the tripod knobs or body, as the reduced clearance between them if the camera socket is used for mounting the tripod, but if the lens one is used instead; the camera is higher, and everything is "safe" from potential collisions, and lens / camera weight on the tripod adapter screw is balanced giving a more balanced rig.

    Great review. I'm glad you emphasized that accurate rangefinder focusing with the lens wide open (f/1.25) will be a challenge at best.

      Yeah, Live View and focus aids will help greatly in this area.

    *NOCTILUX-M 1:1.25/75 ASPH.* is written in a strange way on the front of the lens. Usually, it's oriented outwards from the center of the element.

    great video, very professionally done, nice description, show us it on a body, put the foot on, nice, just guessing; but that foot might be to be used on Leica's own tabletop tripod system for using this lens in it's close_up range in macro work, hell of a lot easier to focus when on a tripod like this one,( you move the OBJECT , NOT the camera, and use the focus knob as a magnification adjuster ( 1/2 life size etc.) and move the object to focus it, using live view).Very beautiful looking lens.

    Nice but 12k for a lens is insane. I could get an SL and the 50 Lux SL or a used S and an S lens for that kinda money. Beautiful lens though.

    LOL David, the only way to assess the awesomeness of optics is with pictures, not by looking into the front element. Just put this thing on SL, will you? :)

      This is a first look overview, not a full review as I would do on Red Dot Forum. I shot and edited the video the day I got the lens and didn't have time to go out shooting at the time of recording.

    David, I'm a fan of your writing -in particular that long piece you did comparing the color between the M9 and M240. However, I found this video unwatchable due to the music bed. Have you ever asked yourself what is the purpose of that? I feel the music bed is something that everyone does because...everyone does it. But would you independently add 12 minutes of bad music to your video if no one else was doing it? It's so distracting and frankly unbearable (to me) and I'm always shocked that more people don't complain about it. And if we look at this from another angle, have you ever watched a video that DID NOT have music and thought to yourself, "If only there were some bad music playing right now, this video would be more enjoyable." I didn't think so....

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for your feedback and I'm sorry you felt that the soundtrack detracts from the video. I drop the music down to about -36 dB, while the dialog is at -6 to -12 dB, so it should be pretty subtle.
      As to why, the music serves three purposes:
      1) Videos with underlying music do tend to be more professional, just like those shot with lighting, good color grading, proper miking, or with animation graphics.
      2) Music prevents the video from being too monotonous or boring, and creates an upbeat mood.
      3) Music in the background helps make the editing process easier, by covering up slightly imperfect audio cuts.
      Almost any movie or TV show has a soundtrack, why should UA-cam videos be any different?

    • @JohnRicard
      @JohnRicard 6 років тому

      RedDotForum 3 reasons why You Tube is different to me. 1) On TV, a segment is literally 2 minutes, so the music isn’t as annoying as it is on a 12 minute or longer(!) You Tube video. 2) when we watch TV we tend to do so with good speakers and the underlying music fades into the background better. With You Tube videos we are more likely to be listening through a small phone speaker, small iPad speaker, cheap headphones or on a train or in some other noisy environment and we really don’t need yet another sound as we struggle to hear the person speaking. 3) again, looking at our You Tube viewing habits, we are more likely to already be listening to music when we play the You Tube video. Everyone has multiple windows open regularly and it is very common to watch a video while you are already playing music. But thank you for the intelligent response no matter what you decide to do for future videos.

      @marc6652 5 років тому +1

      Yes. M lenses are all compatible with Sony A7 series with adaptors. But at 12.000$, you have thousands of options... even a GFX 50 S (or R) + 100mm f:2

    On page EN (English) 23 of the 75mm Noctilux instruction manual there is the recommendation (?): "In the case of freehand shots, always hold the combination of camera and lens with both hands, i.e. with one hand under the lens. When carrying the equipment with just one hand, always hold the equipment by the lens." Wasn't the Leica M10 designed to support the weight of the 75mm Noctilux? I was somewhat shocked to see those recommendations.

    • @thomastuorto9929

      I believe most camera manufactures don’t recommend hanging the a heavier lens off the camera body. I can understand you wanting to carry it by the camera being the M10 compact size.

  • @jameslenney
    @jameslenney 6 років тому +1

    It's very beautiful but like the 50mm Noctilux, the additional half-stop is a gimmick. Like its predecessor, it seems virtually impossible to focus accurately wide-open without an EVF, which begs the question of why you would design one for a rangefinder system.
    I love Leica's minimalism and I can tolerate them pandering to rich people, but there's something obscene about the idea of someone actually owning something like this.
