  • As a Leica M user for the last few years, those crazy bokeh monster lenses like the Canon 85mm f/1.2L II are the things I've been most missing out on. Of course, Leica makes a 50mm f/0.95, a 75mm f/1.25, and a 90mm f/1.5 Noctilux and Summilux lenses but those are all well over $10k and completely out of my price range. When I saw that the 7Artisans 75mm f/1.25 was announced at $449, I just had to give it a try. I was both disappointed and pleasantly surprised by the results.

Great vid Ben. I compared this lens side by side with the new Voigtlander 75 f/1.5. Although the 7artisans is an enjoyable lens to shoot, I end up keeping the Voigtlander for being more consistent. The video is still available on my channel

Thats what i found, the glow at 1.25 - 2 can be edited away with the dehaze revealing quite a bit of detail.

I have the TTA 50mm f0.95, 7A 75mm f1.25 and TTA 90mm f1.25, all for my SL. I prefer 50 summicron, 75 summarit and 90 summicron for my M10P. All about the smaller lenses on the rangefinder and brilliant EVF on the SL for faster apertures

Optimistic review :). I have played with this lens on an M9 for about a week , in my experience it's hopelessly soft and useless for portraits when it's wide open... and I wonder why would you buy a F1.2 lens if you can only use it from 2.8 ? I hope that the Artisans will next focus on a 50mm F2.0 ( a cheap little "cron" ). Cheers !

Ben, I also have a 90 Summicron and picked up one of these 75's to use. I found that what you said is right on but, and there is always a but I now only use it on my Sigma fp so I can focus it properly. It took me a couple of months before I started to be able to hit focus on a reg basis with it wide open and the other thing is at six feet and further I am having great luck. But that distance from 3ft to 6ft wide open is a no go region if you want sharpness

People really are sleeping on 7artisans M Mount lenses. I got the 28mm 1.4 and love it but it's just too big and heavy for everyday use. If you're doing photography as a hobby, 7artisans are awesome.

  • @johnnybombas1685

You should trade your 90 for the 75 APO Summicron or try it. Closer focusing distance and a tad easier to focus on the rangefinder. Plus you can shoot it at f2 all day long. Now focusing is still hard to me on my M10-P and it didn't't get much use until I recently picked up an SL2-S and it's magic. So much better to focus on a SL and the SL will work better with M lenses than Canon etc. Now to contradict myself I find myself considering selling my 75 M for a 75 APO SL lens. first world problems lol...:)

Thanks for the review of the lens. I love to have a 70ish mm lens at 1.4 or smaller to use on both a M and a Z7 camera that is great lens as my main lens. I like your wedding photographs, nice job. I wonder if the bride and groom will like the images with a mask in 20 years?

Have you thought of the 75mm APO F2 if you want to stay in the Leica family? I use that as my primary portrait lens and its a lot cheaper than an old 75mm Summilux or Noctilux.

I bought this lens after viewing this and other reviews and i have really enjoyed using it,,,,,,,,,,maybe i was just lucky but i have sharp eyes at f1.25 and lovely bokeh with my copy.......there is a video on youtube that says its based on a 1940.s biotar tele but with modern coatings which does make sense.
I do own a 50mm summicrom V5 and the TT artisans 50mm f0.95 which are clearly sharper at every aperture but i honestly believe the 7 artisans 75mm f1.25 is a valid and enjoyable lens in actual use, especially with people images.

@@benjhaisch interesting! Pity you didn't do a review on it before selling - there's not much good info you can find on YT about the 90 f/2 I believe )= am considering it as a compact tele for the M3 as well as to be a manual alternative for the E-Mount Batis 85 f/1.8
Voigtlander seems to be a solid brand, Zeiss lenses (E-Mount manual Loxia line and most probably Batis line as well) are produced in the same Cosina Japan factories (Cosina owns Voigtlander).
I just got a Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 M-Mount, to be adapted to our Sony a7S III mainly - but the built quality and handling is great! The image is also nice to balance out the clinical digital look :D

    Benj,
First, I have to say beautiful images from your January wedding. Any client would be delighted with the result. Shame that so much PP was necessary to achieve the look. Second, perhaps you need an original SL (601) for fast glass. They never need RF adjustment! Maybe an SL2-S is your perfect camera? Thirdly, (you knew it was coming) I would watch you review plastic dog excrement. The end.

Cheaper, yes - but the imagery it produces will not quite be what is expected of a modern wedding photographer. Every photo does not have to be at F1.25 or filled with out of focus Christmas lights. For the enthusiast this lens is a gift to create special, old world images. The clues are in Its design.
