A quick look at the three big 50mm lenses from Leica. The 50 Summilux ASPH, the 50 Summicron APO and the 50 Noctilux ASPH. Three amazing and amazingly expensive lenses!

These are all sharper wide open that any Canon, Nikon or any other 35mm format lens I have ever used, and I have used just about all of them.

As I stated in the video, the APO is not mine. The Noct and Lux were mine but I have been shooting Leica for many many years. I have a 5 year old blog that is hugely Leica based and I am not married :)

I'm getting the 50 Lux ASPH tomorrow! For a long time my main 50s were the Rigid Summicron and the German vIII Summicron. These are all amazing, as is the 50 Lux pre-ASPH. A friend of mine owns one and it is very smooth but a bit soft wide open. I had been keeping an eye out for one and for the first time in a long time I found quite a few at reasonable prices. After much consideration I decided to go with the ASPH because I already own so many of the classic 50s. Bravo. Thanks for the peek and the info!

when I was in Berlin in 2010 I was able to get my hands on an M9 with Summilux 1.4 and I have to say it is a stunning lens!

Just a couple of months ago I picked up a Pre-ASH chrome Summilux with a throw away bid on ebay. Auction said it had a scratch. Chrome was rough but with pristine glass. $1000 + $250 for a CLA. Stunning results. Even the Noctilux is small compared to a Canon f/1.2

marktupper1959, Leica lenses have always looked like this. What you see as brass is the helicoid that moves the elements during focusing. It is damped with grease and needs to be raw brass to operate smoothly for many years. Also, the end of the helicoid is raw brass because this is what contacts the sensitive viewfinder arm that enables you to achieve critical focus. Be assured that everything in the imaging area is blacked out. If either of those surfaces were painted, normal use would quickly chip it away and it would clog the threads leading to premature wear to the lens and your focusing arm and you'd end up with tiny paint chips inside the camera. That wouldn't be very good.

Leo Laporte was talking about the middle lens on his Tech Guy podcast today. He said he ordered it from B&H after watching this video. Was surprised that it shipped just days after ordering it.He will use it with A7S

If you want to buy in to Leica on a budget you can get an Elmar 90 or 135mm lens in a LTM mount in good condition for under $200. Mounted mine on a Fuji X - they render nicely.

Great video. Off topic a bit, but what kind of watch are you wearing in this video? I like it.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by the "medium format" look? Thanks.

Sweet. I'm really excited about working my way up to a Leica system one day. Maybe when I graduate. Who needs a nice car, right? Right now I'm just happy to be waiting on the Fuji X100.

Hm, they may be both great and expensive, but look quite boring. I Think I am pulling the trigger on a vintage one, heck maybe even a LTM lens, the vintage lenses look so much nicer (and they also work quite well and they only cost you a finger or two)

I'll stack my Minolta-Rokkor 58mm f1.2 & 1.4 against anything. They made their own glass for their lenses. Amazing bokkeh.
Leica too expensive, but a good investment.

So with a Leica lens you can get more then new, but even better buy a secondhand? That is Leica logic. ???

Nice review as always and lens porn at its most pure. I wonder if there is $10000 worth of difference between the Noctilux and an equivalent lens front another manufacturer. Leica fanboys/girls I am sure will say that there is no equivalent but really it's $11000, come on!
