- I'm honored to share my conversation with legendary video game composer, Grant Kirkhope - whose work ranges from Goldeneye 007 to Perfect Dark to Sparks of Hope to, of course, the Banjo Kazooie franchise.
We spoke about the music that inspired him throughout his career (Queen, Sinatra, Elton John) and how some of it may have snuck its way into his compositions, specifically in 1998's Banjo Kazooie. Enjoy!

I played the heck out of “Banjo Kazooie” when I was a little girl! Congrats to a great interview with the legendary, Grant Kirkhope!!! 🎶🎹🥁🎸🎵👏🏽💯
Truly a classic - thanks for checking out the chat!
No offense but it's WILD that someone with 97 subs could get an interview with Grant. Just shows how much of a genuinely cool dude he is
I’m a music journalist by day - so that helped! And he certainly is a cool dude. Thanks a ton for watching!
I think Grant single-handedly shaped my tonal understanding of music when I was young lol
Yes! Right! I am in my thirty 's and still humming and listening too!
Forever stuck in our heads - thanks for watching!
Good questions, letting him talk without interrupting - great interview, thanks! Funny how he grew up with all those bands and then later wrote great music himself...that I grew up with and then later I became a big Queen, Rainbow and Deep Purple fan as well. 😄
Appreciate your kindness and the view! Glad you could connect here too
During the AGDQ 2016 run of BK, Grant called in to talk about the soundtrack. Grant's son was playing BK on the Xbox but Grant didn't tell his son that he did the soundtrack until the end. And I remember he described hearing it again as like finding your favorite, worn out pair of slippers and they're just so comfortable.
Man that’s beautiful stuff, appreciate you sharing & thank you for watching!
Grant being a massive Queen fan is not a shocker, but it also makes me very happy. I absolutely love 70s Queen.
The best of the best. Thanks for watching!
This randomly showed up in my feed this morning, and I'm so glad I watched! I played both Banjo games nonstop (along with Goldeneye) as a kid, so Grant's songs are permanently drilled into my subconscious, lol. Very cool to hear his reflections on his evolution as a songwriter and musician.
Thanks for watching! And totally agreed - Grant has really left us with melodies that’ll last forever.
DK64 for me but same effin boat
As amazing as BK's soundtrack in particular is, what really elevates it to true greatness is just how well it captures the ambiance, environments, and themes of each world. The fact he said he was just going off his mental interpretation of whatever they told him that area's theme would be is incredible. I would've wholly expected the team to have tightly developed the world and ost in concert to achieve the amazing symmetry in areas like Treasure Trove Cove, Clanker's Cavern, Freezeezy Peak, Gobi's Valley, and Mad Monster Mansion.
While he was certainly correct about himself and contemporaries being at the right place and the right time to develop the masterpieces they did, I hope he doesn't discount his essential role in that. It almost doesn't make sense how well BK in particular (even though honestly I prefer Tooie) was put together by all involved. Everything fit together just right, like a jigsaw if you will.
So well put! What a beautiful soundtrack, excellent game and great legacy - and Grant played such a special role in it all. Appreciate you watching & your comment!
Thanks to Banjo-Kazooie it got me into videogames, first played it at a Kmart having so much fun in Mumbo's Mountain, amazing song and level that got me hooked on the game.
And after buying the game I as greeted by amazing music wherever new place I go, thank you Grant Kirkhope and everyone that worked at Rare and in the game.
Glad to hear it still resonates with you - thanks for watching!
Awesome video. Glad you got the opportunity to speak to the legendary Grant Kirkhope. He is my favorite video game composer. I listen to his soundtracks over and over for a very long time. I wish he composed many more of my favorite video game series like he got to do with Donkey Kong & Mario. He’s absolutely incredible at his work of art.
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed it & his wonderful work
Wonderful video! Grant Kirkhope is a treasure and I'm so glad you got to talk to him about his work and influences! Instant subscribe!
Thanks so much for watching & great to have you following along!
Glad you were able to make this happen! I love Banjo-Kazooie, that was my childhood growing up! Hearing how Grant was able to make these musical masterpieces in the first place was beautiful! I wouldn’t realize that he some inspiration from Queen and other musical talented people! Grant Kurkhope you have made the world seem a little smaller than I thought!
So appreciate you watching & leaving a comment! 🤝
Mr. Kirkhope!
The best there is!
That was fantastic to hear.
Appreciate you listening!
Thank you grant !
Love the Banjo Kazooie soundtrack! Great interview, and insight into the music!
So glad you enjoyed!
was waiting to see this for a long time
Thanks for checking it out!
Great and inspiring video! Very good with getting straight to his answers. My only recommendation if you do more of these, is to have a voice-over read the question that the interviewee is answering, so it's easier for people who can't watch to video to get all the essential details.
Thanks for watching & so appreciate the feedback! That's a great point for those just listening. I'll work on that in the next one!
Thx for this interview !! And Grant you're such a wonderful person !!!
Thank you for watching! Hopefully some more to come soon!
I'm sitting here wondering if I've been wearing my Sennheiser headphones wrong for years after seeing how Mr. Kirkhope wears them.
the guy who wrote DK64 & B-T songs that i can be addicted to listening to...FAILED some music test(s) before he wrote those??? & the guy who also has a pretty huge influence on Gooseworx (TADC) to boot??
maaaan, school is so wacky. Also, the order at which you guys are going over B-K's bgm is similar to from my most-favorite ones lol
So nuts isn’t it? Thanks for the view and glad you enjoyed watching!
Nice!
