Leaving the RC scene in the early 90's as a teenager, and starting it again in my 40's with my daughter, it's super interesting to learn what happened to all these companies in the industry over the years I was gone.

"And a Hydra-Drive, whatever that is." - The Hydra Drive was a fluid dynamic slipper clutch. There were some other brands that made similar systems for both Losi and AE cars.
Think of how a slipper works, you have the spur gear being divorced from the transmission layshaft, and only transmitting power through the clutch pads. The Hydra-Drive works in the same way, only instead of a friction pressure clutch, it used a dynamic fluid coupling. Like a torque converter on an automatic transmission.
In the XX, the drive layout was pretty straightforward. The spur gear was lose on the layshaft, and keyed into the outer housing of the Hydra-Drive. Which was two clamshell halves with a series of radial fins on the inside. Looking kind of like a bicycle wheel inside. The outer housing which was spun by the spur gear, rode on an inner impeller which was keyed into the layshaft, just like the plates of a slipper clutch.
When you applied throttle through spur, it would spin the outer case of the Hydra-Drive, at which point the internal fluid (similar to diff fluid we use now in gear diffs) would dynamically fluid couple with the impeller, which would in turn drive the layshaft on the transmission input.
There was a single small friction disk on the back side of the spur gear, and you could adjust the engagement point of the Hydra-Drive by tightening down the adjustment spring.
Most of the team guys ended up running the Hydra-Drive eliminator included with the kit, that basically turned it into a standard friction slipper clutch. Primarily for feel, by reducing the mass of the Hydra-Drive from the drivetrain. And the few that did occasionally run the Hydra-Drive would use the longer and stronger clamping slipper spring, to tighten the engagement point of the Hydra-Drive to where it only ever came in at extreme full throttle.
The primary benefits of the Hydra-Drive was to really smooth out the power delivery on blown out, loamy dirt tracks, which were very common conditions at many of the bigger outdoor races at the time. It would greatly improve traction on starts by softening the wheel speed increase on starts, and also help to reduce the skipping and wagging that was common on rear motor cars. By using the inertia of the drive like a flywheel, along with it's ability to soak up wheel speed differences from bouncing a wheel off the ground, it would help the car maintain on throttle speed, and not get into the violent tank slappers that would happen on rutted tracks. See a lot of Masamis cars in this time period to see what I mean.
As slipper designs improved, and the quest for lighter weight drivetrains became more desirable, the Hydra-Drive and it's handful of similar designs, all went the way of the dodo, and where quickly killed off, never to be seen again. That said, I am surprised that in the current day and age of instant torque brushless motors, that we haven't seen a resurgence of a Hydra-Drive like device over the standard slipper clutch. Especially in 4WD where fluid filled gear diffs are the norm, and some form of fluid coupling at the drive input, combined with a fluid filled gear diff, would seem to make a lot of sense.
Here is a cool video about the Hydra-Drive, and one of the other viscous coupling solutions.

Great vid! Losi actually started importing the Yokomo C4 about the same time as the JRX2 came out. Jack Johnson was a driver for them and raced locally here in Vegas at Circus Hobbies. He raced his prototype JRX2s for years before it actually came out in 1988 and raced the C4 in 4whl until shortly after the JRX2 came out, then Losi wasn't importing them and Jack had switched to Kyosho for 4whl. Within a few months Team Associated began importing the YZ-10, read into that what you will lol And because there has to be at lease one in every comment section...the JRX-Pro SE didn't have the same molded chassis as the Junior 2. The Junior 2 chassis had provisions for the 5 link while the Pro SE chassis didn't and had a narrower body because of this. Also, the Pro SE had an extra set of holes for the rear suspension and transmission since the chassis was shared with the LXT stadium truck which ran a longer wheelbase. The XX-4 weak spots were the front shock tower (which would pretty much break every time it flipped on the track, at least until the revised tower came out) and the front bulkhead. 4 wheels BITD weren't the most robust vehicles so you pretty much had to hold your breath every time you got out of shape in midair 😆

7:20 the double x was an almost clean sheet design from the JRXpro SE. The only thing it really had in common was shock bore diameter and bearing sizes in the rear. You must be thinking of the LXT, which had many parts in common with the Pro SE

Really interesting stuff. Would love to hear about more classes too, like Gas Truck, which I never got to experience because it wasn't popular here, Touring Car, which I never heard anything from Losi about and 8th scale where they were quite innovative in the beginning and then somehow disappeared from my local market while apparently still booming in the US.
Also, little but important thing: AE kits are made in Taiwan (not China) and current Losi kits are made there too (not sure about older ones though).

I think that many JRX2 prototypes were converted to dirt oval race cars, and the JRX2 was strongly associated with dirt oval racing early on. One magazine actually made the mistake of calling the JRX2 a dirt oval car. Later on it was officially released as an off road buggy.
