Best advice I ever got was if you size up a jump three times and it still feels sketchy, just wait for another day. One day you will be confident and grease it perfectly. It's not worth getting hurt.
😂😂 I was at the track yesterday and sized up the at least 30 times that day and finally hit last practice session of the day lol ( wasn't a small triple either about 110ft )
#1 tip: use a higher gear until you get a feel for jumping. First time on a track with my CR250R, I was struggling, going nose high, getting kicked sideways. A fellow rider said hit it 4th instead of 3rd. Made world of difference in the smoothness of the jump and landing.
My old man and my buddy told me this the other day except we race quads. After 16 years off a machine I have to learn to jump again cause I have speed everywhere else on the track lol. They saw me nose diving told me pop it into 3rd out of the corner and don't let all the way off the throttle and I instantly started clearing the bigger tables I was landing short on
34 yo and getting into dirtbikes, jumping is sketchy as hell. Just landed my first 34 cm lol. Squeezing with the knees and staying on the throttle were MASSIVE tips for me. Thank you
Once I was riding a track with my best friend that he had ridden and I had not. I was keeping pace with him as we approached a jump that turned out to be a double. I was totally unprepared but cleared it easily because he knew what he was doing. If you want to make a challenging jump, ride with someone who knows what they’re doing.
THANK YOU for this vid. It must of been directed at me, cause I am everything you described, new, scared to jump, dont know what Im doing AND had crash's before, trying and now, I'm afraid to try again. I avoid ALL jumps. Watching your vids is really helping me to learn. Thanks again.
If you leave the jump in the right body position and with your body balanced front to rear you'll fly level. I've discovered that if I pay attention to my arms as I leave the jump face it'll let me know what to expect. If you're carrying weight with your arms (think push up) you'll be nose down, if you're pulling on the bars you may loop out. Leave the jump face with all of your weight in your feet and no pressure in your arms.
@@benjaminnielsen5265 my problem is when i approach the jump i kind of leaning backwards and all my weight is on the rear wheel. It's kind of scary to fight the fear😉. How do you overcome the fear?
As for the mistakes I am making, I noticed that when jumping I tend to bend my knees bringing most of my weight back usually happens at the jump face, I guessing it’s just a lack of strength and getting used to, but as soon as I can I’ll correct it, maybe get stronger in the lower body, as for the other common mistakes, I’m try to avoid them as much, like before I actually tried jumping, I was already working on gripping the bike, proper gear selection and keeping a nice steady throttle input, I’ve already worked on those but there can still be improvements. Thank you for the tips and for making this video in general, it is very helpful.
That congratulations at the beginning, I really felt that, thank you so much, here’s a little story, after jumping the very first time successfully back in December of 2023 before last year ended, I was so happy to somehow manage to overcome my fear, I thought it would take me at most 10 years to learn since I started getting into motocross when I was 17 but surprisingly it only took me about 2 years. So thank you, and I am watching this now to correct my mistakes when jumping, although my bike is not really a motocross production bike, it’s just a little 125 dual sport from Yamaha, I believe I can apply some of the tricks mentioned here.
I used to ride a lot as a kid. Now 10 years later I got back on a bike and let me tell you I'm learning again. I went out for the first time last week and I'm still a beginner. I noticed I wasn't squeezing my knees to the bike so I was basically coming off the bike trying to hit smaller jumps. I'm gonna upload my last ride if anyone has any tips that would be great!
Great video... slow wheelies and jumps are my white unicorn. Though, learning these things on a YZ250 2 stroke coming from a lethargic KLX250 has been intimidating.. and unsuccessful

2:11 ''Rocket Ship'' (if not 'generally' in the neut position, too far back) another interesting result of this undesirable position and attitude of the bike is that when you land rear tire first, the possibility of your handle bars being jerked out of your grip is high. Landing well and safely is a science all by itself, I'm sure they have videos on this as well. Advanced tip for avoiding serious injury if you're about to loop or endo, you're in the air and freaking out; If your front wheel is scary high, you can hit the brake just a millisecond and bring some of the high front bac toward level, and conversely, if you're front of bike is too low and you might endo, you can nearly whiskey throttle for a blip/millisecond, to bring that front back up toward level. Neither of these methods is a guarantee, but they have helped a lot of riders.

When do you think I should try to jump my bike? I got it about 7 weeks ago I know the basics and im going 5th gear now. I have a honda 80cc 4 stroke and 5th it the highest gear. I dont have jumps at my house and I never whent to a track.
My whole life i've never been able to jump a dirt bike for some reason (quads/snowmobiles are no problem) & I've owned a DS80, KX125, KX250F.. Now at 42 years old, I recently used these tips to jump my KLR650 on some trails in Colorado & I DID IT , YEA !!!!! Haha.,...
Using a taller gear also helps because if you do need to make a correction mid air the throttle blip will be more effective in a higher gear. If you already at the top of a gear and blip the throttle mid air it's not as effective
You only need to pull up on the handlebars when you're giving everything you got to get over the jump i.e. seat bounce out of a corner or when you see the 250 guys trying to clear LaRacco's Leap at RedBud. The vast majority of jumps you don't want to pull up as you take off, this will cause the classic "boner air" and make it hard to level the bike in the air. I would say that for most jumps as you're learning, you want to have steady throttle all the way off the jump face, this will keep your bike as level as possible. - Chase
Tip # 6, get confident on table jumps 1st, then try small doubles and work your way up! Seat time is the BEST teacher! Doubles are unforgiving if you come up short! Tables are VERY forgiving! #7 the "smoother" you are in the jump approach, the more fun you will have! Smooth is safe, smooth is fast, and after your confidence builds up, youll learn to move your bike around a bit while in the air so you get used to its behaviour while airborne. #8 do NOT death gripp your bars! That makes you too rigid and your body will absorb much more of the landing impact that it should.
LOL being a new ATV Rider, the first thing I learned was squeezed a bike with my knees LOL my first couple of times off a jump I wasn't really squeezing small jobs was all good hit a big jump with some confidence in my feet came off the pegs and I thought of a f*** LOL. Needless to say I figured out real quick okay I need to squeeze the hell out of this bike with my niece and my feet do not come off the pegs
The taller the gear you're in, the less the bike will want to pitch forward off the jump face if you aren't on the gas as you take off. For those learning, I always tell riders to go one gear higher than they think they need to help prevent an endo. - Chase
So I’m a new rider I’ve only taken my bike out 3 times and when I’m jumping I’m landing and getting wobbles should I be squeezing my bike harder or let a little loose?
Ok uhh dont trottle chop Put your weigh a little to the back of the bike but dont go full trottle on the jump Land back tire first and that will straighten up the landing If its way to much and you almost sideways in mid air Body front im mid air and rev it a bit and it will try to straighten in mid air like a mini whip But be sure to have a either a coach or someone teaching you for that one

The rest of the day I was gun shy to hit it again so I avoided the tabletop!
Dang! Don't do that haha. Are you staying level in the air? If your front end is high then you're probably too far back. Something else that some riders do that isn't necessarily and bad thing but will cause you to go higher is pulling up as they leave the jump face. You should be able to carry enough speed/momentum off a jump that you don't need to feel like you should pull up. Did you have someone else tow you in to get the right speed? - Chase
One thing it may just feel like you're higher but sitting down on the take off or dropping a gear or even knees straight or bouncing into the face will do that also, and suspension set-up even
@@rmatvmc yeah it’s rideable. Me and the buddy see it every day. There was some fresh tracks on it. I want to say I know the owner but I’m not positive. Definitely a track I want to ride tho. Been trying to figure out how to get into it all season.

I have a question? How do I stop getting side cramps when Im hitting the burm/turning? I sometimes get it 2:13 I went back to far and loop it into a ditch. How? Uh I was flyin and I hit a step up or a double Idk and I flew off the track smack a tree and landed in thorns. Im good tho also ima say I kept casing it so I wanted to go faster 🤷🏻♂️ I learned my mistake everything is good and I got back to riding
I heard my dad told me when you’re like dirtbike is like the front wheel it’s up in the air you hit the break and then it’ll be light flat and then you hit then I’ll just go for
Man, tough to hear that. I dislocated my shoulder a couple seasons ago and it sucked. Some of the worst pain I've felt riding my dirt bike. Had to have my rotator cuff repaired after that which was 6 month rehab, so I feel ya. Hopefully you learned a little from that mistake and as you build confidence you can correct it. Good luck out there - Chase
Had anybody found some stick on foam pads. 1 inch thick or so... (form fitted to match contours of inside of knees with knee brace or knee pads...) to apply to the area on bike where your knees will normally squeeze. In the area infront of seat but up towards gas tank squeeze area? Would be great to have this produced!
Best advice I ever got was if you size up a jump three times and it still feels sketchy, just wait for another day. One day you will be confident and grease it perfectly. It's not worth getting hurt.

Right when you’re about to launch off a ramp/jump should you pull back on your handlebars a bit to bring the front wheel up?
You only need to pull up on the handlebars when you're giving everything you got to get over the jump i.e. seat bounce out of a corner or when you see the 250 guys trying to clear LaRacco's Leap at RedBud. The vast majority of jumps you don't want to pull up as you take off, this will cause the classic "boner air" and make it hard to level the bike in the air. This is a private track. I haven't been back since and have no idea if the track is still rideable or not. - Chase
@@rmatvmc yeah it’s rideable. Me and the buddy see it every day. There was some fresh tracks on it. I want to say I know the owner but I’m not positive. Definitely a track I want to ride tho. Been trying to figure out how to get into it all season.
Some of that footage is Delta. Some is LACR. Is the golf course track in Utah? What town?
That is a private track near Orem/Provo Utah.
@@rmatvmc Todd’s golf course?
hey that looks a little bit like Utah, where is that?
Does this apply to quads
Sure does.
Do a 2 stroke jumping video
I know I'm a random creep on internet,so why should you listen but...
*DON'T RUSH IT!*
If you don't feel comfortable enough - don't!
Jump when you feel ready you have the confidence and of course these tips will help you...TAKE YOUR TIME & GO SLOW,PROGRESS SLOWLY..!
Good luck and be safe!
Sounds like my hippie parents... I wanna send it, I’ll learn being rushed into it 😅 but I check UA-cam after I fail miserably and walk crooked for a week from being all bruised up 😂
Great video guys
Just got my first big bike
KTM 250 and I wanna jump, but it’s sure scary 🔥💨💨💨💨🤞😫
Squeeze that bike with those knees bro!!! Your pants should have wear on them from you squeezing I have to get new pants alot lmao but i know im squeezing😂. Ride safe 🤙🏼
I don't know how you moto x dudes do it! Jumping little stuff in the woods is enough for me!
You just gotta send it man
I have a question? How do I stop getting side cramps when Im hitting the burm/turning? I sometimes get it
2:13 I went back to far and loop it into a ditch. How? Uh I was flyin and I hit a step up or a double Idk and I flew off the track smack a tree and landed in thorns. Im good tho also ima say I kept casing it so I wanted to go faster 🤷🏻♂️ I learned my mistake everything is good and I got back to riding
I'm new to riding what is chopping
letting off the gas abruptly. - Chase
I heard my dad told me when you’re like dirtbike is like the front wheel it’s up in the air you hit the break and then it’ll be light flat and then you hit then I’ll just go for
I hit a double years ago and caught whiskey throttle coming off the second jump. Dislocated my shoulder, been nervous ever since 🤣🤦🏻♂️
Man, tough to hear that.
What track is this
Had anybody found some stick on foam pads. 1 inch thick or so... (form fitted to match contours of inside of knees with knee brace or knee pads...) to apply to the area on bike where your knees will normally squeeze. In the area infront of seat but up towards gas tank squeeze area? Would be great to have this produced!
