    Mastering hovering takes time and practice, so don’t stress if it feels impossible at first. You’re learning a real pilot skill - stick with it!
    Keep practicing, and let me know in the comments how it’s going for you!

    Absolutely amazing video - cant wait to get started in MSFS 2024 thanks a lot.. helicopters have always been a bit of a mystery to me and I sort of avoided them. But with the new missions in MSFS and being swiss, I just have to try some alpine rescue missions...

    Great video. Have been into rotary wing aircraft for my entire life but never got to fly or properly sim. Would a thrustmaster hotas and tobi eye tracker get my foot in the door with immersive simming?

    • @plokkum
      @plokkum  2 дні тому

      @@mantistoboggan6815 Thank you! The Thrustmaster HOTAS is a decent starting point, but for helicopter flying, you might find it a bit limiting due to the fixed centering spring on the joystick. The VIRPIL MongoosT-50CM3, on the other hand, allows you to adjust or completely disable the centering, making it much closer to the feel of a real cyclic. If you’re looking for finer control, VIRPIL might be worth considering!

  • @steppahouse
    @steppahouse 2 дні тому

    Excellent and timely video :) I'm a die-hard space-simmer with a Virpil HOSAS and am now trying to figure out MSFS2024. So I've got two joysticks (left and right, as well as pedals) to work with. Right stick is cyclic, of course, but the left will be collective. My question is about setting up a collective control when I'm dealing with a center-zero joystick. In other words, the normal state of the joystick is unmoving and 0/0 for x and y axis. What's the best way to set this up as a collective?

    • @plokkum
      @plokkum  2 дні тому +1

      @@steppahouse Thanks for the comment! I’m honestly not really sure how to best set up the left stick as a collective in your case. Maybe someone else can chime in.
      One thing I’d recommend, though, is using anti-torque pedals for the tail rotor control. You could map the anti-torque to a mini joystick axis on one of your sticks, but pedals will give you a much more intuitive experience for helicopter flying!

    Awesome video! I already knew how to fly, but I didn't fully understand why things happen the way they do. Thanks for the detailed explanation! By the way, which simulator is used in the video?

    • @plokkum
      @plokkum  4 дні тому +1

      @@Nightspyz1 Thank you! 🙏🏻
      Yeah, it’s a complex system. Understanding why things happen can help understand how to prevent unwanted situations.
      The simulator in the video is DCS world. The helicopter is a free mod, the OH-6A by Tobsen & Eightball. Both are free to play and very realistic.

    • @Nightspyz1
      @Nightspyz1 4 дні тому

      @@plokkum Thank you for the response! Playing DCS has always been frustrating for me, as I felt my joystick/HOTAS didn’t have enough buttons to fully do what I wanted. I love VTOL VR, for example, because everything is accessible with your VR hands, clearly labeled, and not overly complicated, yet still provides the same level of fun with bomb runs or dogfights. What controller setup would you recommend for flying helicopters with the same level of accuracy you demonstrate in this video?

    • @plokkum
      @plokkum  4 дні тому +1

      @@Nightspyz1I'm personally flying with a pretty old setup from 2007-a CH Products Fighterstick and rudder pedals, paired with a Virpil CM3 throttle for the collective. The stick is nothing fancy, and I can't even calibrate it anymore, but it gets the job done!
      If you're aiming for accuracy, though, a joystick with a 20cm extension can make a big difference. Brands like Virpil, WinWing, and VKB are rock solid, but they are on the pricier side. A stick with Force Feedback would make the most difference, as it lets you feel the forces acting on the helicopter, adding a whole new level of immersion.
