Nice video, I can't believe helicopters aren't more popular in sims. Flying them is way more fun and much more interesting than the GA planes and the learning curve is really satisfying.
Thanks. Absolutely, I enjoy fixed wing as well but the dyanmics of flying a helicopter and versatility for exploring the world available in MSFS is so much more satifying.
Cause they're much harder to learn than putting engines to full power and pulling back on the yoke. They are terrible in bad weather and high winds especially if you are new to flying rotor craft can ruin the experience. Then also MSFS doesn't offer autopilot for rotor craft which honestly should have been added the day of release so you always need to be paying attention and on the controls at all times so it's not great for sightseeing plus visible waypoint markers can't be seen when flying unlike when flying fixed wing and the GPS screen is too small to be looking at to figure out where you are going making them terrible for long or unfamiliar flights. I'm new to rotor craft and bought a couple HEMS DLCs with a couple hours of flight time on both and are fun to fly but only when the weather is good and only fly around areas I don't need waypoints to follow.
I have recently started flying helicopters in msfs in Vr and it's one of the best VR experiences i have found. it took me a few flights to be able to get myself around but even with my old cheap flight stick now i'm dodging buildings in NewYork and flying under bridges. I am now ready to upgrade my sim gear!
Great stuff! I keep hoping with the growing popularity of Helicopters in Flight Sims that we'll start seeing some affordable dedicated helicopter controllers. There are some specialist ones but I think I'd have to sell a kidney to get them so am working on building my own.
@@flightsoficarus absolutely! i can do with entry level stick and adapt a throttle quadrant to act like a collective, but then any pedal i see cost as much as the stick and throttle together! plus i have one more pc component to upgrade for max results which is a $400 cpu. when i'm done all that i will want to upgrade my VR goggles.. and it goes on an on until i'm sitting in a fully enclosed motion simulator in my living room and my wife lives in a different house!
@@walley2637a big upgrade would be anti torque pedals if you really enjoy helos. I’ve been flying with them in DCS since I bought my Winwing pedals and just got the idea of checking them out MSFS
Very useful beginner tips. Thank you for putting this guide together for newbie sim heli pilots. Flying a heli is the best way to see the world. I was amazed to see the London Eye start to spin as I hovered closely.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Exploring by helicopter is absolutely the best way to see the world. You miss so much in a plane when you just zoom by but with a helicopter you can slow down and take close look.
I have been flying recently with VR as well, and I have to say my helicopter flying abilities have gotten hundred times better than what I used to be like. Most importantly, helicopters require very gentle and very precise inputs and they will look after you really well during the flight.
VR definitely provides a better sense of situational awareness when flying. I've tried on a flat screen, and I just can't get on with it. VR puts you right inside the helicopter.
Excellent tutorial! Loved the comment about holding your breath, I know exactly what you mean. I think I have about 200 hours flying helicopters in MSFS now, and it still is a wonderful challenge.
I find them easy to fly however, as some may know, my 407 or MD500e flys like its piloted by a drunk. Despite trying sensitivities at 0, or higher response. I even checked my in cockpit trim control, it was centered and still, whooooo owhhooooohooooo all over the place. I just dont know what Im doing wrong. What are your sensitivities set around?
My sensitivity settings are at the default. The 407 and 500e can both be a bit twitchy but with practice should fly ok. Maybe check your pedal bindings to make sure they set up right. Also experiment with the helicopter rudder assist in the settings. Sometimes it can help smooth things out although it can have an undesirable effect with some 3rd party helicopters.
@@flightsoficarus I have twist axis but ya, now just gotta find the right spot. I could not get anything right until I went into airplane choice, then after livery it says customization and wow, that did it right there for my choppers! I still have to refix the trim cuz I have to push forward and then my hand goes numb lol
Awesome - as a beginner who bought it today - I was able to fly by keyboard which worked really well and in the same way (Numpad + F2 and F3) I found out by trial and error 🙂, till I have a joystick 🙂 I had some experience before from VTOL (VR). But what i don't understand in MSFS, if I choose a target airfield, where do I have normal to land? First on the runway and then taxi, or can I fly directly to the helicopter landing spot?
Typically you'd land on the runway unless otherwise directed. If you're using the in game ATC, it's really only geared up for planes so it'll tell you land on the runway. However from a practical perspective (and because in the in games ATC isn't great) when landing in MSFS you can land wherever you feel is suitable. I'll usually decend to ground effect along the runway then turn off at a taxi way without acutally touching down till I reach where I want to park.
@@flightsoficarus hi, thanks for your great description. That's how I did it, because that's what I saw in the video. However, I noticed there was no log entry for it in MSFS. Only when the heli is switched off and on the airfield, the logbook is confirmed with a landing I found out :-) Now I have to find out how and in what order to do that. Thanks for your feedback 🙂) Great channel you have. Have therefore also already subscribed.
If you're using the pedals to compensate for the torque correctly and still spinning I'd check the bindings to make sure you have the axis bound correctly and also check that you haven't got anything bound your tail rotor/rudder axis that might be causing a conflict. Also what, helicopter are you using? Some can be more squirrely (pretty sure that's a word) than others. You might also want to reset the trim just to be sure.
I'm currently using an old Thrustmaster Hotas X and the basic Saitek rudder pedals. I'm hoping to upgrade at some point but what I've got works for now.

Glad it was helpful! After a while it all becomes second nature. Enjoy!
Great information here described in simple terms. Best I've seen for helicopters.

Once you get the grip of the helicopter you will love it
Too right. I can see how they can be little intimidating to the new pilot but at some point everything clicks and they become a lot of fun.

When I push forward on the stick I just spin like crazy

Helis are rough on controller, but after buying a joystick I find myself flying them nearly as much as the 83629 bush planes I've downloaded lol 😅
I've not tried it with a games controller but I'd imagine it's pretty awkward. Having a proper HOTAS definitely helps.
What HOTAS and rudder pedals do you use?

Don't blame the UA-cam guy, named Icarus, if I crash?
