Great videos. I'm a middle-aged mom who, for a variety of reasons/life situations, is a very out-of-practice and somewhat phobic highway driver. I'm forcing myself to get back out there regularly these days but it's really hard to force yourself to do something you're scared of. I get especially anxious around complex interchanges where entering and exiting traffic is using the same exit. The crossover traffic pattern freaks me out. Any videos that address this specific configuration? Thank you so much for all the great tips!

Hey Rick, I watch your videos from all the way India, moving to ontario soon, my question is that i didn't find the white sedans action particularly wrong as infact he/she braked and remained in the lane instead of cutting too close to you, am i right? , plz reply to clear my doubt. Cheers .
Driving on a multi-lane freeway, how do you prevent changing into the same lane with other car ? i.e. I am on the outer lane and the other car is on the inner and we both try to merge to middle lane. Shoulder check is pretty difficult to see that...
Hi Harrison Chou - Thank you for your comment and query. Mirror, signal, shoulder check, and shoulder check again before moving. Have a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/xLQ8lkwvR5E/v-deo.html&list=PL0x-bChcUvwH3H8P-p2oneBQ6l7ZSQ1es If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. The tactic I use, I call either proactive driving, or fault-tolerant driving. When I'm on a multi-lane highway, I space myself such that I am at least 3-5 car lengths behind the car in front of me in my lane, and position myself such that there is no car to my left or right. If this means I have to speed up briefly, I do that. If this means I have to slow down briefly, I do that instead. You need to treat multi-lane roads more or less like single-lane roads with an option to pass or be passed. The traffic flow capacity of a given road is not dependent directly on the number of lanes, rather it is a product of the average speed of traffic. To the degree a multi-lane road allows higher-speed traffic to overtake slower-speed traffic, overall traffic flow capacity of a road increases. Cars in adjacent lanes should not be travelling at the same speed. If they do, this creates lateral gridlock and plants the seeds for a potential slowdown or traffic jam.
Hi Aiden F - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and query. After 2 or 3 days of driving my friend, you should be able to go out onto the freeway with a qualified mentor. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Great video about driving on freeways. Actually I never really took too much note about the on and off-ramp thing until watching this. I kinda knew yes, that you gotta watch out at those areas , however never really thought about it too much. After watching this, I will be more cautious about driving near off and on-ramps. As a matter of fact, this happened to me while driving back home from Ottawa to Toronto a couple weeks ago. I was approaching an on-ramp with me in the left lane passing a truck in the right. The distance was about the same as you and the Acura in the vid. There was a car on the on-ramp about to merge. This truck cuts me off extremely dangerously that I had to brake going from about 120 k/hr to about at least around 70. From the whole trip, that was surely the most scariest. Also, just wanted to mention, I wish more people could lane change like the pick-up at 4:05. That's one of the best lane changes I have seen in a long time haha. He asked if he could lane change with three flashes first and kept the signal on all the way until he was completely in the lane, very well executed.
Hey Kyle - glad to hear you still here to tell the story about the truck cutting you off. It's always good when it just a near miss. And yes, that was a good lane merge; it is an exemplary example for all. Maybe the driver was a driving instructor. Take care my friend. Interesting, as I'm typing this, I'm waiting in the Vancouver Airport for a flight to Toronto. All the best, Cheers Rick
Oh that's great!! You are probably back from Toronto by now. Hope you had a great time! I'm guessing you did some driving? Did you see our "not-so-courteous" drivers haha?
What if as your get on the ramp and you try to merge over to the left lane but you have an 18 wheeler or another type of heavy vehicle already on that left lane where you're trying to merge to... what do you do??
Hi thegodess - Thank you for your comment and query. Adjust your speed so that you either merge in front or in behind the larger vehicle. On most on-ramps and merging lanes you're going to see the traffic as you're coming out and will be able to adjust your speed accordingly. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest maybe you should upload a video about it to show us the right way of doing it. I'm terrified of not merging over to the left lane accordingly when I get on the ramp and there's a very large vehicle. Thanks for the reply 🖤💜
Hi thegodess - Thank you for your comment and feedback. This video may help you out: ua-cam.com/video/0T_m5FT_txo/v-deo.html&list=PL0x-bChcUvwFZC-_2LIavmqjUMNgj_jpq&index=3 If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
A word of caution about merging in front of the bigger vehicle, watch out for other vehicles trying to merge in front of them into the same lane as you are going into. A lot of drivers like to pass trucks and cut over in front of them, if you are trying to merge into that lane at the same time it can be bad for everyone.

Unfortunately i have been watching your videos and writing down all your great tips before my highway road test then i did my test and i faild :( I am vey comfident with my driving but the instructor was suck she told me to turn right when its red and i didnt i wait for the green light
Hi Candis Killebrew - If there is a regulatory sign that states "keep right unless passing" than yes it is. However, the challenge with laws is policing these. Therefore, it is recommended that you travel in the right lane unless travelling faster than the traffic flow or passing other vehicles. The best advice I can give to remain crash free is to be as predictable as possible and communicate your intentions early to give other drivers and road users ample notice. All the best Cheers Rick
Hi Carlos C - Thank you for your comment and concer. I was standing on the end of a bridge, and there was a railing between me and the traffic.
