    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 років тому +8

      Hi Edwin - thank you for your comment and confession. Yes, merging is intimidating--I believe--because you're relying on other drivers to help you out. And in our culture of "everyone for him/herself" it is counter-intuitive - especially when it comes to driving. My suggestion is to practice in town where speeds are lower; however, know that if you match the speed on the highway and signal early - you're going to be OK. And lots of shoulder checks and looking and studying the traffic patterns as you're coming out onto the highway. All the best, Cheers Rick

    To Rick from Smart Drive Test,
    My name is Tony Gallegos (the last name is Ga-yay-Goes), and I have a disability, which is Autism. I enjoyed your driving videos, because I got my driver's permit since January 26th, 2018; last year, I had my driver's permit after taking the written test for driving twice (one is the computer, and the second time is on physical paper). Right now, I drove 30 hours of driving; My appointment to take behind-the-wheel test is on January 18th, 2019 at 2 o' clock p.m. at the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) near my house in Chula Vista, California.
    I have a question in regards to driving on a freeway or an interstate. Just last week with my dad, I am driving on a freeway, heading to home (I am from Chula Vista, California, USA by the way), and I got freaked out by a small bus changing lanes when I am in my 2nd lane (the lane to the far right). Plus, I am scared if I am enclosed by the truck(s) {As I saw from 4:30 - 4:40}. What should I do the next time I am on the freeway if I am beside or in-between two large trucks?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 років тому

      Hi Tony Gallegos - Thank you for your comment. You're going to do awesome on your upcoming test. When you're on the freeway, it is good to be uncomfortable when you are near large vehicles and they take your space buffer. Simply adjust your speed so you're either in front or behind the large vehicle. Or you can change lanes too if that's an option. Now most of the time when you're on the freeway--in preparation for your test--you're going to be in the far right lane because you're travelling slower than the traffic flow. Remember to breath on test day; that will cause your body to relax. Good luck on your road test! Be sure to let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Yay! The new merging video! :D
    So to my previous inquiry on merging, I take from this video, that unless the accel lane is exceedingly short/almost nonexistent as shown @6:00, and as you were talking about @8:15: slowing and stopping before the acceleration lane is "not recommended" and/or "unnecessary".
    Is this a safe takeaway, Rick?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 років тому +1

      Hi Cory - thanks for your comment and query. Yes - once you're on that acceleration lane, you must match the speed of the flow of traffic and be prepared to merge. If you slow or stop, you are at high risk of being rear-ended!! All the best, Cheers Rick

    I have a question, what should you do if no one allows you merge on the highway. Would it then be a logical decision to stop on the acceleration lane?

  • @scottdilley2962
    @scottdilley2962 5 років тому +1

    People have no clue what YIELDING means in many states. When you do the proper thing by waiting for the traffic to have a break in it people behind you start beeping. YIELD IS NOT MERGE. The proper way of Yielding for all parties is for the oncoming traffic to either get over into the next lane if possible, give a signal that they are gettting off that off ramp as a driver is coming up the on ramp or go a moderate speed for that driver to get into the lane. I am a truck driver and it's really amazing how people don't even look into the lane to see if anybody is coming or they look to late. I had people speed up on the right of me just to get in front of me as I am about to get off the exit. I always show my blinker so they know I am getting off but again they non chalantly look as they are just about to get into the other lane.

      Hi Scott Dilley - Thank you for your comment and information. I tend to agree with you my friend. There was a situation today with my friend where I was unsure how to handle it correctly or if there had been a better solution. My friend drove, we went up the acceleration lane and there was a car, moving very slow in front of us. We kept our fair distance and slowed down. the car didn't speed up whatsoever and we already reached the broken lines, even if we tried to stay back as much as we could. the car- still in front of us, blinker on, but not doing anything, going 50 or 60 an hour. My friend eventually merged and still kept slow for a second, in the attempt of letting that car merge in front of us, but then, as there were cars behind us speeding up to us, he decided to speed up in order not to make the other cars slam the brakes. We so to speak closed this car's gap and passed it. The lane to the left was full so no option to move over there and make space. My friend and I were left a bit confused and helpless about what would have been the most cooperative way to go about this. If we would have waited more, we would have been eventually so slow that we could have caused sort of a traffic jam at the acceleration lane. thoughts?

  • @tica2006

    Great video... unfortunately in NY city they seldom let you merge so you will have to stop. And they speed up when you signal to change lanes; even if you signal early. Go figure 😩

      This is *exactly* what I’m struggling with in my Highway lessons. They make me learn how to highway drive on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn. I really thought I was being crazy and nervous doing the merge on that short ramp, but that thing is really short! My instructor is telling me push the gas, but I always wonder how I can do it if a car is literally speeding past in the right lane not giving me a chance.
      I would love to see a video on how to merge on a short on-ramp and when people don’t let you in on the right.

    Tips on switching lanes in wild or congested traffic? do I keep constant speed or do I slow down ? this is the only thing I'm scared of while driving because I don't want to be rear ended. I also don't want to hold up traffic behind me. Also if you can if you have videos on accelerating smoothly can you leave it in the reply

    • @smartdrivetest

      Hi Emmanuel - thanks for your comment and query. When changing lanes--almost every time--you're going to speed up slightly because you're covering more distance. By accelerating slightly you maintain as constant speed as you're moving from one lane to the other. And for accelerating smoothly, look at these videos: ua-cam.com/video/I19WKgoQqxY/v-deo.html and this one: ua-cam.com/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/v-deo.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. In Missouri, I was driving to work and merging onto the 291 when the idiot in front of me rode the brakes the whole way down the acceleration ramp. Personally, I typically floor it on these ramps (my vehicle only has 78 horsepower) and disregard what the book says about "do not exceed the speed limit" as Missouri drivers tend to go about 20MPH over. I personally do not, but I am not trying to get rear-ended so I saw a gap and crossed the solid white line to merge before the idiot in front of me did. Had I obeyed every law, this moron would have got me killed.

      Hi Nesseight - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, there are a number of drivers that simply don't get up to speed on the acceleration lane. And when that happens, they put other drivers at risk: both those behind and those on the highway. Drivers need to get up to speed on the acceleration lane, pick the gap and merge into traffic. Near my test center their is a merge lane that is pretty short and I find it hard to get up to the speed limit of 80km/h should i fully step on it or can I enter at 70 and get up to 80 after?

      Hi Biggity boys Diggity dogs - Thank you for your comment and query. Unless you're behind another vehicle, put the "pedal to the metal". In other words, put the accelerator on the floor and get it going as much as possible. Most vehicles will accelerate to speed, even in a short distance. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Does usage of cell phones at gas stations can cause explosions?

      Hi Amtul Asra - thank you for your comment and query. I would say you're probably pretty safe using a cell phone while pumping fuel. All the best, Cheers Rick

    I merged on the freeway for the first time a couple of days ago. When I merged, a bus behind me blew his horn at me cuz I cut in front a bit too close. I deserved that honk🙄

    Here's what everyone needs to know. I'm sorry if you were driving on the beach smoking pot the day Mr.T was teaching this in H.S. Drivers Ed.
    Drivers in the on ramp have the right of way. This because their acceleration lane is limited and ends soon! They are supposed to get up to the speed of the cars on the slow lane, so they can smoothly enter without causing them to hard brake or preferably not at all.
    It is your duty dear driver already on the highway to examine the on ramps as they come up to your right as you progress down the highway. They are pretty damn obvious usually as you approach them. So you should be thinking "Oh, there's a big-you-name-it that will have to accelerate slow because of it's heavy mass, or there's an especially slow you-name-it looking like by the time I get to his on-ramp I am going to need to accommodate them so they can get on safely and as smoothly as I can create for them.
    It does not matter if they are in fact going about it in the wrong way and even being timid and slowing up. Not everyone is as clever as you are and they need to get somewhere too. So suck it up damn it and work with them. If they are hesitant create a safe distance that even Wally Cox at his most timid when he was learning to drive would say to himself "I guess it's OK to enter" or better yet get over one lane to try to keep that guy moving! Driving is all about traffic flow in a safe and smooth manner and we all play a big part for the road environment even though we are just driving one vehicle and thinking about how many more reps we will try at the gym today.
