The Grooves Of Genesis | Nic Collins
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 лип 2024
- Nic Collins is the son of drumming superstar Phil Collins -- but Nic has earned his place playing drums with Genesis, Mike & The Mechanics, as well as his own project Better Strangers. He has quickly established himself on his own talent and gained praise from longtime Phil Collins band members for his maturity in his playing and work ethic.
In this free hour-long lesson, Nic breaks down some of Genesis’ coolest grooves, talks about Phil Collins’ influences (from Santana to Bonham), shares a Taylor Hawkins story, demos some classic Simmons SDSV pads, and yes - he shows you the fill. The one you’re probably waiting for.

Hey guys where can I watch Nic's
interview with Phil?
@@markuschakra It's not out yet! Stay tuned!
When you do another interview with Nic in the future, can you ask him if there's the possibility of doing a collaboration with his eldest brother Simon, since they both are drummers and Simon can sing, also can play other instruments?
@@DrumeoOfficial Going out of tune here. Any release date?
I totally agree with u!
Phil Collins has lived three lifetimes. One as the one of the greatest rock and progressive musicians of the 70s. The second as one of the most successful and popular solo artists of the 80s and 90s, and now his third life, through his immensely talented son who seems to be able to replicate his parts immaculately, but with a fresh modern sensibility. Nic is awesome, can’t believe how brilliant and professional he is at his age.
He even looks like Phil when playing. He's stance etc
Um…any particular reason we are still pretending Phil’s mainstream, bubblegum POP was “progressive?
@@christopherp.hitchens3902 where did anyone say that?
@@RobTaylorDrums - The comment regarding Phil’s “Three lifetimes” was sufficiently nauseating, never mind inaccurate. These posts ignore the years of damage Phil did to himself and to music in general with his mind numbing SAMENESS. That he’s in a wheelchair now doesn’t change any of that. Of course, we all like what we like but what lay at the core of this echo chamber is personal NOSTALGIA. I am nostalgic for The Monkees because I was a kid when I first heard them. However, that doesn’t mean they were great. And neither was Phil Collins!
@@christopherp.hitchens3902 so much time spent to this reply. Let the others enjoy their time and their favourite musicians, will you?
You can tell how proud Nic is of his dad. Such a beautiful thing. I'm sure Phil is equally as proud of Nic
If you watch any of the Genesis live shows or Phil live shows and see Phil looking back at his son, you will know it for sure.
check out phil's song "Father to Son" off of ...But Seriously. It'll make you cry
@@FrivMusicIt almost made my cry last Friday while listening to this album 😊
Phil is one of the greatest drummers in history. And Nic is such a cool, nice guy, I am so glad he is keeping his dad's legacy alive.
No He's not. He's really good though. Reality
Within 70s prog I agree he was one of the greatest. Few could touch the feel he and Bill Bruford had during their heyday.
Collins was a weirdo
@@morbidmanmusic umm, yes he was one of the greatest. Definitely. You apparently don't know what you are talking about
Couldn’t he sight right??
Possibly the most beautiful father-son relationship/handover in the history of rock music.
Here’s another one: Eddie Van Halen and Wolfgang Van Halen
Yes and Phil is old enough to be his son's grandfather
Jason Bonham? He tells a funny story on Howard Stern about his dad teaching him how to play a Phil Collins song when he was a young boy.
Max Weinberg (E-Street Band, Conan O'Brien) and his son Jay (Against Me, Slipknot) is surely in the running, too. (Thankfully we don't have to pick a winner, all the father/son pairs mentioned here are awesome)
What a treat, Nic is a great drummer, makes you appreciate how brilliant Phil was in his hey day, coming up with all these amazing drum parts. Can't wait to listen to the interview with Phil!
I'm a huge Phil Collins fan and I'm 71 yrs old and watching Phil's son play those drum parts is just awesome. I'm not a musician but I love music
Wow, blown away by his dedication to really learning , understanding the importance of these grooves. No shortcuts , hard work. Smart young man. Dad couldn’t have hired ANYBODY to do as good a job. I love all the love he has for Chester .. Great job Nic .
Good point that was made about 45 minutes in. Phil listened to what his bandmates were doing and his playing is always planted firmly in the melody. Between the basic 3-2-1 groove of "Apocalypse" and Tony playing at his own pace, there was a lot of improvisation going on.
This young guy should appreciate his father did to him
My father used to drink all the time and tried to kill me many times when he was high.
That's why I spend my life involved in darkest shit. I took some drumming lessons in local church from great drumming teacher 💜
But couldn't continue cause couldn't afford a drum kit.
And now I live at war zone 🇺🇦 Ukraine
All my life I didn't get nothing good from this life only music giving fresh breathe to my harmed soul.
I wish you all the best.
Hope I survive all this 💩

I think Genesis and Phil Collins are one of the most genius bands ever and it’s so awesome to see Phil’s son following in his footsteps.
While so much has been made about Nic's dad's live drumming prowess, people tend to forget how Nic's dad possessed and expended so much energy singing, doing tambourine dancing, and playing piano/keys (in his solo tour) in addition to playing drums for 2 hours in thousands of shows in one lifetime. The fact that his other "activities" on stage didn't affect his drumming (at least until the end of the 2007 Genesis tour). Bottom line is, energy-wise, Nic's dad was a BEAST, hands down. Mad respect.
Yeah, he's pretty much in a class of his own.
What happened at the end of that tour?
Wow, what a surprisingly enjoyable video this was! It’s so refreshing to see a celebrity’s kid grow up to be grounded, hardworking, down-to-earth, and just an all around cool person… so many don’t. And a superb drummer too! 🥁
On tour with Mike and the Mechanics too. Good on you Nic. Deserves every gig he has, the man can play.
Oh man, nice.
Hard to believe this guy is just 20 years old. He's a really mature musician and person.
Just like his dad’s band back in the days.
And he's so calm about it. He makes it look easy.
Interestingly, Phil was 19-years old when he joined Genesis.
is he really? he is so poised and articulate!
He is 23 now
Thank you Phil, Nic, Brandon & drumeo for making this, Phil is a truly incredible drummer, Nic is definitely a chip off the old block, playing his dads parts with incredible precision, and bringing a little of his own flair to the parts. Phil is the reason I’m a drummer and I’m sure there’s many more who were inspired by his work.
There aren’t enough thanks to extend to you all for putting this together
Phil was most certainly a master at coming up with complex/innovative and yet inspired/infectious grooves. His musicality is wild. He moves you. One of the true prog greats of the era, and absolutely timeless.
Not only do we appreciate Nicks playing, but we get a chance to appreciate the music of Genesis and their brilliant talents.
lets not forget how amazing Chester Thompson was as well he played all this stuff to perfection for years
Yes indeed. Seconds Out - Dance on a Volcano/Los Endos
The linkin park singer really did it all huh
@@mattlogan1that's Chester Bennington
I watched this again tonight, as I skimmed it the first time. Anyone who thinks Nic Collins is some sort of lite-beer drummer, who was some sort of expedient PR choice, doesn’t know what they are talking about. He is a PHENOMENAL drummer, and the way he breaks down these complex odd time parts - including slowing them down - shows how technically proficient he is. Brandon did great with this walk through, and I’ve had to completely reappraise my view of this young man. Very very impressive..
Watched him live with Genesis last year. One of the best experiences of my life
Me too, definitely one to watch for the future!
Cela s appelle le talent et grâce à son père de génie ! Quel bonheur de pouvoir les entendre encore longtemps par les CD et vidéos !
Nic is such a talented young man and I love that he's letting his dad's amazing legacy live on.
This kid is just too awesome for words! Great player, and a good heart. ☺❤
Possibly one of the best drumming videos on UA-cam in the past four or five years. Nic absolutely kills it on Fading Lights instrumental section and I’m glad he finally got to play it rather than suffer the drumming blue balls of sitting through the opening section only on the tour.
A genuine pleasure to hear you talk about some of my favorite drum parts in Prog. You guys absolutely nailed it.
THIS^ when he talked about the expression of Genesis and the drumming his father did, you can feel and see nic absolutely enjoying being able to express himself through it
Gosh, he’s so terrific on the drums! Makes so much fun watching him doing what he loves. I guess Phil’s heart must have overflowed with love and pride when he saw how much fun Nic had playing his songs. Thanks for making this happen drumeo!!!!!!!
Nic is awesome. I saw the Genesis tour in 2021, and Nic did his father proud. Love this breakdown of the tracks. Phil to this day doesn’t get the credit he deserves; he was a phenomenal drummer.
I saw them in Boston, Nic didn't skip a beat! It was an absolute joy to watch.
Phil gets the credit he deserves from MUSICIANS, but since the overwhelming majority of people know him from his 80s pop rather than his brilliant 70s drumming, well - there you go.
Seen him live 4 times. So happy he’s holding the torch. I’m extremely sad Phil quit but it was clear it was over, also as a singer. One of the best songwriters EVER.
I watched this LIVE the first time. I have been waiting for the video! Amazing that these grooves are still played and appreciated in 2023. Thanks Drumeo and Nic for doing this. Looking forward to the interview with your dad #philcollins
Phil Collins is one of the best musicians in rock and pop music. Great song writing, great drumming, great singing. Talent, hard work, will. Nicolas was born into this music world, he likes it and is drumming wonderful! This is just great!
His drumming on the early Genesis albums was just something else, phenomenal.
Some of those camera angles make him look like Phil in the early days... scary. And he looks so relaxed playing all that.
Fenomenal, incredible. It makes you understand how fundamental the role of the drums is even in "classic Genesis"' songs and how complex is writing and playing them. Nic is really a perfect heir to his father, one of the greates drummers of rock music
Totally.
Fading Lights. Wow. Tears in my eyes. Thank you Nic. Thank you Drumeo. Love from Central Scotland.
34:42 Superb. The cymbals sounded like Phil and no-ones cymbals ever sounded like Phil's. It does bring a tear to the eye because the subject matter of the song fits Phil's handing over to Nick.
One of the recent concert highlights for me was seeing Nic playing with both Genesis and his Father’s band. Looking forward to seeing what he does with Mike and the Mechanics, as well as his own band!
I was blessed to see Genesis at Madison Square Garden during the Invisible Touch tour. Phils 15 minute drum solo was beyond amazing. Nic is so talented and reminds me of his dad but with his own flair.
So cool to see Nic honoring his father and Genesis like this. Saw him perform both on his dad’s final solo tour and the final Genesis tour and he is such a talent. Can’t wait to watch his career unfold. Bravo!
Like father like son. A brilliant young man,a talented drummer.
It's great to see that Nic appreciates what his Dad has done, offspring usually want to move away from their parents influence, like Jason Bonham, with his Dads legacy, Nic has taken it full on, and loves playing those amazing songs.
Great Video 👍👍👍
Nic will/is doing his own thing but I’m really thankful he’s able to teach us all about Phil.. he’s definitely in a unique situation. Thanks to the Collins family for sharing!
Thanks so much for this, followed Genesis for 43 years and Nick was brilliant on tour, he was the glue from the old to the new. His dad must be very proud - well done Nick
Wow, it's hard for me to describe the amazement and joy I get from seeing the incredible super stud Nic cover some of dad's most iconic and masterful drummer. These songs I've loved forever and had no clue what the heck Phil was doing some of the time. So to see it fascinates me like mad. Drumeo rules.
This was a treat. Thank you, Nic. Your father means so much to so many, and from the bottom of my heart I want to tell you how much I appreciate you playing your fathers music with the same love and passion, that he always perform with. Your father solo work, and his work with Genesis will live on.
This is so cool to see Nic playing these songs on the drums. I've been a Genesis fan most of my life, I can say that because I'm only 18😂 it's unfortunate I never got to see a concert back in the 80s, thank god for youtube clips and bootleg videos online. I only got to see Genesis this last tour. Much respect for Nic following in his father's footsteps and doing great!
We can really appreciate a son's love for what his father did, and it is not at all trivial that Nic has not only succeeded in picking up his father's legacy, but that he wants to make an effort not to make his drumming a mere repetition, perhaps even a simplified one, of what his father did.
I see a humble, passionate person, adept at communicating and curious about exploring his own limits in order to overcome them and achieve new goals. Nic can be an inspiration to many new drummers and I hope he will bring new lustre to the immortal Collins brand and build something totally personal with which to be remembered by anyone who loves music and drums.
Thank you Drumeo for this wonderful contribution.
Thanks Guys! Nick, your father is a genius! I love him. And I really really thanks you for what you are doing to keep Genesis alive.
Respect to all of you guys! ❤
what an honor must be... Phil Collins was a special one very special what a great musician , a complete one, with so many iconic songs
I remember when I was 16 years old and listened to Mr Phil Collins on his brilliant album with GENESIS, ABACAB live . Uff I knew It was going to be the BEST ALBUM of my Life ❤❤. Love you guys .
AMAZING!!! Drumeo this is a masterstroke that you have put this together with Nic. Having the chance to listen again and relish these amazing grooves conceived by Genesis, but now with Phil's Son behind the kit, is as a life long Genesis lover, an amazing (and somewhat emotional!) treat. LOVE IT NIC AND DRUMEO!!!
Superb playing. Such a great drummer and Phil will always be one of the all time greats. ❤
Enjoyed every minute of this. Nic is a top notch drummer and it’s great to see him carrying the torch and making new music.
Been waiting about 20 years to finally get insight like this into Phil's key grooves and patterns. Thanks so much! Particulalry Wot gorilla which I've been trying to master for years and finally starting to get on that snare...
It’s a joy watching him play and carrying on his dad’s legacy.
Nic is so passionate and knowledgeable with his stuff..great to hear the history of Genesis!
Finally have had time to view this, and what a legacy Phil has. All the best legend! Thank you for everything, and the future looks bright for Nic, Thank you for inspiring many. One of the greatest to ever do it, and truly one of a kind. 💙👑
FANTASTIC!! 👏👏🤜🏻🤛🏼💥❤
Nic is very impressive with his instruction, directions, background explanations and so down to earth. ❤
I'm with Nic regarding "Fading Lights" in the tour. It has always been a favorite song, so beautiful & bittersweet. The instrumental section is one of my favorite Genesis instrumentals (along with "The Brazilian") . I'm with Nic in the disappointment that the full song wasn't part of Last Domino set list. That song always brings me to tears so I guess it was a good thing 🥺, being their last tour. I did cry but had they played the whole song, I would have been sobbing. That instrumental section is the musical version of the song's lyrics, a life. With it's highs, lows, thunderous moments and reflections. 🥰👏🥺❤
This video was fascinating to see & hear. Thank you Nic, Brandon & Drumeo.
I also love the video ending, with Phil's Oscar & Golden Globe winning song, "You'll be in My Heart".
Thanks again. 👏🌟
Happy New Year to everyone and wishing much success to Nic & Better Strangers. "Raincheck" is such a crushing song, in every way. 🌟🌟
Look forward to seeing Nic & his band reach the stars of success. 🙌🌟
Like father..like son..👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This is why, when people say John Bonham, I say Phil Collins. Nic really can show how interesting and complex Phil's drumming was.
I just simply love Jason Bonham. Saw him play live with UFO. Awesome drummer as well !
@@progrunner3094 He is really good.
Fueron, son y serán lo mejor de una época dorada de la música, John, Phill, Neil, Stewart, Ian, Cozy, Carl
Phil's Peter Gabirel Era drumming was unsurpassed. It is every bit the level of Neil Peart, certainly equals. I still wonder why he stuck a 15 tom in the mix of the other even interval concert toms?? A 14 rack tom would've made more sense melodically and take up less room.
@@bretonwescott5983Don't forget about Brand X !! I wonder if Phil used a totally different kit with Brand X or his Jazz band live ?
Absolutely amazing interview. Nic you’re such a great drummer. Thank you so much for breaking down these iconic songs. Phil is my favorite drummer of all time. Also thank you Drumeo
Love this..
I grew up listening to Genesis. Best band ever..,and Phil's drumming was a massive part of the band.
Thanks for this.❤️
Perfect video. Perfect song for the ending. God bless this young man and thank you to all who had a part in putting this together.
Had the pleasure of seeing Genesis live several times and found this absolutely fascinating. It's great to see that Nic is carrying on Phil's legacy and he must be immensely proud.
I am so thankful you guys invited Nic to demo these classic live Genesis songs! I’ve seen them so many times live, but there are certain parts (especially In The Cage medley) I’ve been playing wrong all these years. Genesis was my first live concert back in 1978 and I was completely blown away. Side stage lower balcony front row right by Phil Collins. You guys have no idea how much I appreciate this! Thank you Nic and Brandon! 👏 👏 👏

It's absolutely incredible that he managed to learn all these complex rhythms and drum parts! Amazing! Well done!
I saw The Last Domino tour. Nic you did an incredible job. This was a real treat of a video, and as a massive fan of the prog side of Genesis, I loved your choices of what to play and breakdown. You hit the nail on the head when you talked about Phil's emotiveness behind the kit. It really set him out from the crowd of some intensely skilled drummers back in the 70s. He'd make you feel the music of the drums, not just the beat. It's no wonder he took to singing so well too, as that's really what separates the good singers from the great, at least in my book.
This is just outstanding to watch and learn how some of the most iconic music of my life and has been made by Nic Phil's son is just out of this world thank you
Much respect on creating this fabulous video. I’ve followed Phil for 50 years and I thought an opportunity to hear and learn the grooves from source had been lost. Exquisite in every way, from the playing to the mature level-headed personalities and presentation involved. Very well done indeed and thank you so much.
What Nic has mentioned around explaining Supper's Ready - how Phil played with Tony and reacted to the keybords. This sort of lesson in prog improvisation would've been a gold mine, Hope you bring Nic back for another week to record that!
What a lovely young man! A credit to his parents and such a talented drummer! ❤
Never realized how incredibly talented Phil was as a drummer until watching Nic.
I wonder if Nic can sing like his dad. Really impressed with this young man. I grew up with Genesis and he is nailing these songs!
Simon can!
@schumannbeing I really hope Drumeo can actually invite Simon one day, given he also plays drums! Though he hasn't been active that much lately, I'm sure he can answer questions!
@@IAmInfinitus208 I enjoyed his old music as well as his recent album from 2020 and I agree, he has a lot of potential and sings just like his dad. Not that I have any expectation that he should follow in his dad's footsteps but I also feel like his kids are just as talented and deserve their own chance in the spotlight as well
I saw Nic in a solo concert with his father and was immediately impressed by him. What a great young talent. Listening to you both at this drum clinic is fantastic. I really enjoyed every minute of you two sympaths. Best wishes Lothar Massmann
I love how humble and grounded Nick is. He really works hard to honor the music. He knows how lucky he is, but has clearly worked his ass off. His playing has improved so much. Love it. Was Phil overexposed in the ‘’80’s and ‘90’s? Maybe. He was a workaholic and obviously a hugely creative period for him. He was unbelievably talented as a writer, player and arranger. He was everywhere because he was a hit maker. It was both a blessing and a curse for him. The dude is as complete and exceptional of a musician as there has ever been while at the same time, humble and insecure, in many ways. No disrespect to Tony
and Mike….both great musicians. But Phil was
just a force of nature.
I'm old and I'm a Genesis fan since long long time ago: I thank Nic for keeping my favorite music still alive.
P.S. Collins surname means "a person who belongs to the family of Nicolas": mind about it.
This was just wonderful. Take away the drumming…Nic just seems like such a nice guy! And … a superb drummer! I can’t imagine how proud Phil is of him to not only follow in his footsteps…but to literally learn all of these songs and perform with the band his Dad formed many years ago. I’ve been a Genesis fan for a very long time and have tried to play some of these grooves, but couldn’t wrap my arms around the beats. It is great to have him showcase so much of his dads incredible playing, and for Nic to pull off every one like a boss. Well done to Nic and for the Drumeo team 💪👍👌

Awesome….in your own right…….what talent……to have two Collins drummers on the planet, how blessed we all are….best drummers ever…Phil simply a wonderful human being……and now the Phoenix flies once more
35:00 Man, what a great performance of ‘Fading Lights’!! One of my favourite Genesis tracks. The live version from Earls Court in the 90’s is truely awesome 🔥 Love the triplet kinda Tom and Cymbal fills that I think of as synonymous with Phil Collins.
Nick seems like a genuinely great guy too!
In no way is Nic just "carrying on the Collins name". He's living proof that he is very talented. It's very difficult to play to many of the older Genesis tunes. Phil was also in Brand X, (Fusion band). Nic has a great father who taught him well at a very young age.
Excellent video!
Genesis is one of the best bands in the history of music with some of the best drum parts ever, so this is awesome is awesome to see.
Phil Collins Legacy will live on forever because his son Nicholas is the spitting image of him. Absolutely a superb drummer just like his father Phil
I wonder if Nic could get into those natty shorts Phil wore on the bataclan film concert?! 😂
Have you ever seen Phil's older son, Simon?? Crazy likeness!!!
This is so awesome and Nic is so talented! Genesis is really legendary in progressive rock and Phil is integral part of that. So glad Phil passed that down to Nic!
Very easy to forget Nic is only 20 or 21. Amazing drummer
Amazing person and drummer you are, Nic, congrats and keep the family tradition going! We wish you only the best in your career!
It's cool that Nic is using the same set up his dad has used for decades. Bottom-headless shells. Very unique sound. Good attack with not a lot of sustain.
Oh damn, he's a bad ass drummer. I had no idea that he was that skilled on the kit 😳 💯
Behind the Lines is such a musical drum part. One of Phil's most memorable, IMO, even up there with Cinema Show and Firth of Fifth.
The 3SL version had me completely hooked. So precise and pretty fast too.
Phil Collins was a Drum God when I started to learn how to play. My teacher at age 13 was a fan & set me sections of his songs to learn / play, they weren’t always played right but I wanted more and loved it.. Phil to me is the best I ever heard & saw live only once, drumming versatility & timing unparalleled! And amazing that Nic has taken it to next level - so cool!!
His son’s actions and performance is a spitting image of his extremely talented, famous dad. What a wonderful young man he is!
Best drumming performance from Phil IMHO is Driving The Last Spike from Genesis. Phil wrote that 10 minutes song. Amazing stuff
I think that that is one of the most underrated Genesis songs out there, I love that song. I'm so happy that I got to see it live on the We Can't Dance Tour.
He even wears the sweatbands like Phil used to in the 70s and 80s.
I agree with Nic, Wind and Wuthering is one of their best albums. One for the Vine is a top 5 song for me.
This was just GREAT! I thoroughly enjoyed the interview/lesson and 'walk down memory lane' of classic Genesis songs. Thanks so much!
Fantastic session. Nic is a brilliant drummer. Phil must be so proud. Great to hear the legacy line following on from Bonham, Collins Snr, Peart, Hawkins!
I grew up listening to Genesis and other prog rock bands.
I love the music. Genesis will always be my favorite! Phil will always be my favorite drummer!
He's the reason I started playing when I was 10 years old!
Phil is a true legend! Nic you're pretty good yourself! Keep it up.
Thanks for the awesome video!
Cinema Show was one of my favorite songs of the Last Domino tour! Wonderful to see Nic playing it here, brings back great memories of seeing that masterpiece played live.
How nice... Phil was something ❤️ can't wait to see the interview.
Like most people watching this, I'm mostly a Genesis fan, but the You'll be in my heart ending gave me goosebumps.
Wow. This interview, the stories and, of course, the actual play-through's and demonstrations... I've wanted to understand how to play ALL of these songs correctly over the years. This was a wonderful tutorial. Thank you, Nic, for doing the walkdowns and for carrying the banner for this amazing music.
the legacy is there and will be alive with us for a very longtime...go on Nic...keep drumming with passion...!
Absolute gentleman and a hell of a drummer!
Would be nice to see Nic drum the groove of Do They Know It's Christmas. Whatever you think of the song itself, the drum part is incredible I think.
Some of the BEST stuff I've ever heard relating to how Genesis operates, especially, Legend/s, when it comes to drumming. Good stuff.
This was so fun to watch! Thank you. I’ll be watching for you out in the road Nic. Your maturity is refreshing. Keep up the great work.
