Ukrainian Food Taste Test - 5 Dishes to Eat in Kiev, Ukraine
Вставка

- Join us in Kiev, Ukraine for Ukrainian Food taste test as we sample 5 different dishes to eat at Katyusha restaurant (Катюша). As we're not too familiar with Ukrainian cuisine many of these dishes we're sampling for the first time and it is really exciting to be trying something new. The Katyusha restaurant (Катюша) had a really quirky retro vibe with decorations from the 70s and 80s including old cameras, televisions and video game consoles. The Ukrainian meal itself was delicious and considering we ordered a lot of food it didn't cost that much. The five Ukrainian dishes we ended up ordering are as follows:
1) Borscht (борщ) Ukrainian Soup
2) Olivier Salad (салат "Оливье)
3) Deruny (деруни) Ukrainian Potato Pancakes
4) Varenyky (Вареники) Ukrainian Dumplings
5) Medovik (Медовик) Ukrainian Cake

Ukrainian Food Taste Test - 5 Dishes to Eat in Kiev, Ukraine travel cuisine video transcript:
Well good day from a chilly summer day here in Kiev (Kyiv -
Київ - Киев). It is lunchtime and today we are going in search of food. What are we going to have?
We're going to be having a whole bunch of different Ukrainian dishes (українські страви). Yes. And this is a cuisine we're not too familiar with. Not at all. So we're just hoping to order a whole bunch of different things and try most of them for the first time. Let's go.
Alright guys, so we've made it inside the restaurant. This place is called Katyusha (Катюша) and we were actually here yesterday and we ordered so much food and it was really good so we decided to come back and show you guys what Ukrainian food (українська кухня) is all about.
So we've gone all out once again today and we've ordered like four different mains and dessert and drinks. Yeah. So yeah, this is going to be a fun little introduction to Ukrainian food for both us and you guys watching because this is basically our first time you know getting acquainted with Ukrainian dishes (українські страви). So it should be tasty.
Sam is loving the vibe. Yeah, I know. This restaurant is so cool. It is like stuck in a time warp. I mean it has got so many different retro things going on from old tvs to old video game consoles and just like the paintings, the wall hangings and the different decorations in the restaurant.
It is kind of a fabulous place I have to say. Yeah, it kind of looks like the 70s but with lots of antiques. Yes. Yeah, it has a very 70s 80s type of feel.
Okay, so first up we are starting with Borscht (борщ) which is a sour soup.
So Sam here went for salad. Yeah, I wanted to try the think it is called the Olivier Salad (Оливковий салат). Olivier. Olivier. And it is just a very it is very visible. You can see exactly what is in it. Yep. You've got like eggs and carrots and peas and then I think like little cubes of ham and it looks like it is kind of like in a type of a mayonnaise type of sauce.
Moving on to our 4th dish. We believe this is called Varenyky (Вареники) or pyrohy (Вареники). Yeah, we're not entirely sure. And having just traveled in Poland these are these look awfully similar to the pierogi.
Time for dessert. Viola.
We believe this is called Medovik (Медовик). If we've deciphered the menu correctly. And if you take a closer look it basically looks like a whole bunch of like little pancakes stacked on top of each other with layers of cream and honey in between.
So basically this came to ₴349 Ukrainian Hryvnia or $13.71 USD.
This is part of our Travel in Ukraine video series showcasing Ukrainian food, Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian cuisine.

Welcome to Ukraine! Bon appétit!
Thank you very much!
Actually “Polish perogi” are not polish, originally they are the variation of ukrainian varenyky which is very old traditional ukrainian meal. Just a fun fact🙂
Yeah, and the whole dumpling tradition came to us from Tatars, who got it from Mongolia, who got it way from China :)
And from Ukraine dumplings went into Poland (pierogi), Italy (tortellini) etc.
@@ZoomReverseFlash tatars and dumplings traditions? Ahaha. You are kidding boy.
I am Ukrainian and that's quite a good representation though the restaurant you chose is not the best :) The dessert is called Medovik, which literally means Honey-fied and the cream is done with honey as Audrey noticed. As for place specializing in cakes comment - it's not quite true, it's just common to have a dessert display in plenty of Ukrainian restaurants. In any case - good video as always, thank you.
Thank you very much! Ah, Medovik is sure delicious :) Thanks for letting us know about that. We noticed after visiting more restaurants the dessert menu is usually quite impressive.
You are most welcome. I hope you enjoyed Ukraine :)
я вообще не знаю как там по своей воле обедать))) катюша это фу
и гыдота
I think the dough is done with honey, and the cream usually done with sugar. As for desserts in Ukrainian restaurants, i agree.
What good national dish restaurant would you recommend? (anything but пузата хата please)
I am very glad that you liked our city! Welcome in Ukraine! Welcome in Kyiv!
Thank you very much! We had a great time :)
> Welcome in Ukraine! Welcome in Kyiv!
I hope you intentionally used *in* instead of *to* just for fun. I hope you is not like a dumbass ex-president Yanukovych. :)
TishSerg in Slavic languages, like Czech which I speak some of, ”welcome in (somewhere)” is actually how the phrase is written, although it translates to “welcome to” in English.
Vítejte v České Republice = “welcome in the Czech Republic” but really “to”
Ukrainian cuisine looks very interesting!!!
Thanks! We've really enjoyed it so far.
OMG! I'm going to Kiev next summer! Thanks for featuring all this great food. My grandmother's family lived in Ukraine at one time and picked up the food habits. She used to make borscht for us when we visited her.
That is so awesome to hear! I hope you have a great time. We loved visiting.
You should definitely visit it!
And Lviv as well)
but this russian food
Mitty Smu Russians call it their own food, as well as Crimea their peninsula. Search schi, pelmeni and so on
+Олег Кунецкий Yes, I hear that is a nice city too.
Two little breads called Pampuska, always tastes with garlic and borsch. Potato pancakes are great thing. In Belarus they achieved higher level of potato pancakes. They add meat inside, those called kalduny :) First time I comment so actively. Just I like to see you eat Ukrainian food :)
Thank you very much! It was all really tasty :)
I actually discovered a recipe called Деруни по-Ярославськи in a 19th century recipe book, it had deruny baked, with an amazing mushroom sauce between potato pancakes, and also some when the meat is between the pancakes, god all of those were delicious! Think every area and country could surely have amazing food secrets, if only we could dig them out... :-)
Katyusha is nice place. I recommend you to check fast food restaurant Puzata Hata :) There lots of national food, good quality and cheap.
Liubov Bevz yes. Its true. I Recomend to visit Puzata Hata for testing true ukrainian dishes
Sounds great. Nothing like good quality and cheap prices :)
That is awesome to know! We'll recommend others to go there.
I would not recommend anyone to go Katyusha nor Puzata Hata. Both of them are network restaurants so they do not really care about quality. Maybe the guys were impressed because they tried these dishes for the first time. But seriously - if you want really tasty food then go west :)
Liubov Bevz yes, but "Puzata Hata" is the best)))
I'm so happy to see you in Ukraine.
We're very happy to be here!
Love this video !! Ukrainian food is amazing 🇺🇦 🇺🇦

Traveller - Trip Reports & Travel Videos so what's the best ,popular dishes in Ukraine?
Guys, so sad, katyusha is a soviet style cafe, not a ukranian one.
Please watch our Opanas and Pervak videos from Kyiv. I think those are more traditional places.
tnx guys. If i were your adviser, i would reccomend you to visit Kanapa ;)
Perogies, borscht and potato pancakes are all considered Ukrainian food too though.
The cake was German, no?
What would be the difference between Russian and Ukrainian cuisine/meals?
Would luv to visit there soon. Thanks for all the foodie tips guys. - Trevor
Thank you! Recommend visiting for sure :)
Finally!!! You are here!!!! I'm your subscriber from Kyiv. Let's meet.
Thank you very much! We're so happy to have a chance to visit Ukraine. Unfortunately, we're so far behind on publishing videos we've already left Kiev. I think we need to announce meetups on social media. Sorry, we would have loved to have one in Kiev.
So close to 100k! I am so proud of you guys! Keep up the good work!
Ah, thank you very much!

Another great vlog with AWESOME greatness. Thanks for sharing 👀📸👍👍👍👍📸
Thank you! We sure enjoyed this place.
Try also varenyky with blueberry)) Friend of mine from New Zealand felt in love with them)
That sounds sooo good!
So many people commenting about the wrong spelling of our capital - Kyiv, but nobody mentioned that it is actually Ukraine, not The Ukraine, there's no "the" before the title, and somehow it is really insulting to hear. So while you are here - try re-learning) But anyway thanks for coming, shooting this great video and popularizing Ukrainian cuisine!
Thanks! We're making an effort to not use 'the' but sometimes we forget. And for our city guide we used the spelling Kyiv first.
We Ukrainians take it as compliment when foreigners praise our national dishes. It's so much pleasant for me that your overall impression about it is positive :) Pleasant travels for you
Thank you! We sure had some great meals in Kyiv and Lviv. Fond memories.
Guys, let me advice you one of the best Ukrainian restaurant "Ostannya Barykada".Its directly in the center of Kyiv. They have everything authentic (I mean even Ukrainian whiskey).this place is the best for foreigners !!
Thank you very much for sharing that!
Kateryna Romanchuk Going for my birthday this summer, thanks for the advice
I'm making борщ tonight :) The food looks very good! Thank you for sharing!
Ooooohhhhh... sounds awesome! What do you put in yours?
I used beets, a carrot, a tomato, lemon juice, salt, potatoes, cabbage, a sauteed onion, whole black peppers
bay leaves, dried parsley, many garlic cloves and some sour cream on top to make it extra delicious :) (you could make the broth with a piece of beef but I avoid it)
Looks delicious! I've never tried Ukrainian food before but I did once try borsch soup as a kid once at a friends house if I remember.
Thanks! Ah, how did it taste? Borscht is something we've been ordering a lot.
So, go to Kyiv and "Puzata Hata")))
Nice to see you guys enjoying your time. Welcome to Ukraine, happy to have you.

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos
Olivier salad (Russian: салат Оливье Salat Olivye) is a traditional salad dish in Russian cuisine, which is also popular in many other European countries, Iran, Israel, Mongolia and also throughout Latin America. In different modern recipes, it is usually made with diced boiled potatoes, carrots, brined dill pickles, green peas, eggs, celeriac, onions, diced boiled chicken (or sometimes ham or bologna sausage), tart apples, with salt, pepper, and mustard added to enhance flavor, dressed with mayonnaise. In many countries, the dish is commonly referred to as Russian salad.
And the cake is medovik (honey cake )
It was so good. Thanks for letting us know.
Ukraine is greate wonderful countr.People there are so friendly and kind))))))))))))))
Thanks!
I’m from Canada and have been craving Ukrainian food!
Hope you can try some soon Rael!
in the New World there are many Ukrainians in Canada and Argentina. Looking forward to visiting
And the varenuki is the same thing as the perogi, u can make them all kinds of sizes and any filling .
Did the ones we try look about normal size?
Audrey, your borscht was made with beetroot for sure! When you cook beetroot for a long time it loses its color and becomes white. The color goes into the soup. There is also cabbage in the soup. My borscht looks exactly like the one in the resataurant and I always add beets;-)
Thank you for explaining that!
Ah, we learned something today :)
Wow, that’s cool that you liked Ukrainian dishes:) By the way, the bread you ate with borshch is called “pampushki”:)
Thank you! We sure had some great meals in Kyiv. Thanks for letting us know.
Usually people try the wrong Ukrainian food but you guys tried like the best of the best and it's so cool you guys liked it a lot and I eat that food homemade weekly
Thank you very much! That is really cool to hear.
I'm from KIEV!!!💓💓💓
Oh, that is really cool to hear!
So interesting video, i love it :)
Thanks!
Guys! This "restaurant" katyusha is in USSR style and has nothing at all to Ukraine except some dishes. And as to the borsch, we all adore it! :)
Welcome to Ukraine and try to use foursquare or tripadvisor next time you`ll gonna choose Ukrainian restaurants ;)
Thanks! Ah, we went a place called O'Panas and really enjoyed it. What is your favorite spot?
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos well, o'panas is way more of a traditional place 😊
But as you could see, it's historical traditions that are keeping only in some villages) as to the cousins, yes, we all love varenyky and borshch ☺☺yummy yummy
Medovik - (Med - transl. as honey) means made with honey cake
Oh, thank you for letting us know!
i’m from Ukraine, but i live in Paris right now, so it gave me a nostalgic feel 💞
Thank you! Will you visit home again soon?
Love you and your videos Samule & Audrey God bless .
Thank you very much!
im Ukrainian and potatoe pankakes are my soulfood
You should try Kiev cake))
Oh, what is that like?
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos it’s like waffle with lots of nuts and cream)) every person who comes to Ukraine try it first of all!!))
2 Samuel and Audrey. Kyiv cake (Київський торт) look like this and it consist special kind of meringue as base with nuts (usually peanuts) and butter cream. Best brand in ukrainian supermarket is BKK Kyiv cake (БКК Київський торт) (merringue base in BKK cake is better then Roschen (оwner of Roshen is current Ukraine president Petro PoROSHENko :) ), also Roshen price is higher. Anomaly! But BKK is local and sells mostly in Kyiv, instead of Roshen kind of Kyiv cake across all country)))) But Roschen cake is good too, definitely not bad!
ladyvenus.ru/uploads/uploaded_images/users/user15108/osobq0si4xw.jpg
And "Napoleon" from Roshen
Roshen -is the best of the world))))) I love all sweet things from Roshen))))))) I felt in love true Roshen many years ago.I can change country just for ukrainian food)))))
Chilly summer..... lol like it ...
Definitely better than too hot :)
Enjoy your videos - how do you compare Kiev to Lviv?
They are such different cities. Both are well worth a visit.
Great representation of Ukrainian food! I was in Kiev in 2009 visiting my family, loved it there!
Thank you very much! Ah, that is cool to hear. It sure is an underrated city. We'd love to explore more of the country next year :)
Really funny seeing #2 served in a ring-form but all looked great. Try some Vinaigrette if you liked #2.
Thanks for the tip!
Pierogies and Varenyki are the same food, just called differently..
Thanks for letting us know.
Actually, pyrogy it is an old not common name of varenyky sounds like polish pierogy.
I love the gun chillin behind the Gaming console.
Eric's grandmother was born in a small town that was in (Mezokasony) Hungary but it's in Ukraine now (and know called Kasony). It is interesting seeing some stuff that reminded us to food from other countries like Hungary, Georgia, etc.
Have you had any situation during your trips where you didn't like the food at all? What did you do in that case?
Oh, that is fascinating to hear! We've noticed researching some cities in Europe that they have a history of like 5-6 different names reflecting different time periods and borders, etc. We actually have a Georgian meal soon in Kiev :) Honestly, most of the time we enjoy the food wherever we go. Off the top of my head, Bolivia is a country where we didn't have too many amazing meals though I must say.
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos yes it is very interesting. That is great that you like the food in most of the places you have been to.
On top of the cake is one of those layers just crumbled and sifted on there :)
Oh, cool.
by the way, a dessert calls medovyk
I love this soup,my wife makes it often.
Oh, that is cool! Such yummy food.
The best vareniki are the ones with cherries. Another great option is with blackberries) try next time
omg it was so nice to watch guys. I'm Ukrainian and currently live in kiev and I was sitting just like awwaw cuteness cause everybody keeps complaining about Ukrainian cuisine and you just were enjoying it soooo ya
lysm
You guys have to try holubtsi - cabbage rolls in tomato sauce (with sour cream)
Oh, that sounds so good! Thanks for recommending it :)
I just started using Google Maps today and learned to use it. There are 192 images taken inside and outside that restaurant including some of the dishes you ordered. They are reviewed 339 times and the rating is very good. I also use a VR headset so I get "immersed" in the 360 degree shots.
Woah, that is awesome to hear! We'll have to check that out :) It is a really good spot to have Korean food.
I love borscht so much (sorry if I spelled that wrong) my baba (grandma) makes it. It doesn't rally look like that tho, it's more red and has more vegetables in it
Oh that sounds incredible! Nothing like home cooked food.
The cake looks really nice, and the potato pancake looks similar to one we have in Korea.
Thank you! Ah, it does remind us of that. Like the gamjajeon or pajeon. Actually our next video is us tracking down a Korean restaurant in Kiev..haha
lived in Korea and there are no such pancakes
The place you've been at is not of a Ukrainian, but of Soviet cuisine. Borsh is from Ukraine but we make it all over former Soviet union, Olivier salad has been introduced by a French cook in Moscow at the middle of XIX century and became a national dish of Soviet Union, potato pancakes came from Belorussia and has also become national dish of Soviet Union. Honey cake is an improvisation of Soviet housewives due to lack of sweets in Soviet shops. And you are correct - those cabbage dumplings in Poland are called "pierogi ruskie", which means Russian pies. This gives you an idea part of what Ukraine actually is:)
Thanks for the thorough explanation. I think the next two videos we made at O'Panas and Pervak maybe were more Ukrainian dishes.
OK Vareniki. Potatoes is just some type of eat. Traditional is with black cherry and is sweet. It has nothing to do with perogi as a totally different way of cooking. It is also has nothing to do with Poland that girl from video mentioned. Vareniki came from Turkey our neighbors through the black see. Enjoy.
Thank you for letting us know about that!
Nr.4 is dumplings (pierogi). The big ones arent popular in slav countries. And Medovic is just a layered cake made with honey and beetween the layers were probably been cream mixes with condense milk
Thanks for letting us know!
Welcome to Ukraine!
we mix sour cream with borscht because it's more tasty!)
P.S. u should try conservation vegetables with gorilka (ukrainian vodka) and Cabbage Rolls( Golubtsi )
Thank you! Oh, that sounds delicious :)
Never call Borsh soup. Soup is soup but as Ukrainians we see borsh as a special dish. Ukraine knows 180 recepies of Borsh. We add beets to borsh sometimes but is mostly cabbage dish. You expected beet dish. Beet borsh they make in Russia and it is totally different, it is has nothing to do with traditional Ukrainian borsh. Enjoy.
Ah, that is good to know! Woah, over 180! That is incredible. How many do you think you've personally tried?
Ukrainian food is the best. You should visit Lviv in Western Ukraine. The food variety is great there and very traditional :)
Thank you! Ah, we just visited and we have a few videos out already. We really enjoyed Banosh out there.
You are always welcome !
Thank you!
I've only had this kind of food in Korea! haha I thought it was so homey and delicious.
Thank you! Ah, Korean food. We so miss it :)
Yep) this borscht is with beetroot, but it gives such color in combination with tomatoes and long boiling.
we eat traditional borscht with sour cream and garlicky bread. Borscht can be with or without meat, but it always has cabbage and beetroot.
Thank you for letting us know! It is so tasty.
My dear borshch is borshch it is not a soup))))
Ah, good point! :)
Андрей Мамай Okay but as a food in a category, it’s a soup. It is regularly referenced in English speaking countries as a soup.
crissy4445 it is not soup. You never call it soup
Borscht is a lot tastier with beet. It makes it sweet and a lot more rich. In my opinion it tastes a lot better. Put thay sour cream straight into it. Yaaaa buddy! DRANIKI 😍😍😍 Those potato pancakes are amazing (they're called draniki). I need to make some. Olivye (potato salad) is amazing and we usually make it on special occasions. Voreniki (dumplings) can contain different ingredients. Some have jam, others have cheese, mushrooms, and potatoes. There are the rounder ones called Pilmenyi which contain meat. It's pronounced HU-rivnya.
Thank you for all of that background information! We sure had some good meals in Kiev :)
Glad to see so cute and nice peolpe in our county)
Thank you!
