  • Come join us as we sample Chicken Kiev (котлета по-київськи) and a host of other Ukrainian food dishes at Pervak restaurant in Kyiv, Ukraine. Chicken Kiev (котлета по-киевски), a stuffed chicken breast was definitely the star of the meal but we also got to try eating Salo (сало) pork fat and Ukrainian vodka (горілка) as well for the first time. This sadly was our final meal in Kiev, Ukraine but heading to Pervak for the first time was a great grand finale as the food was delicious, the service excellent and the complimentary appetizers and drinks a most pleasant surprise. Here is our complete food list from our dinner in Kiev, Ukraine:
    1) Ukrainian dry red wine and Vodka (Horilka - горілка)
    2) Complimentary bread with pork fat (salo - сало) and butter
    3) Ukrainian pickled herring (маринована оселедець)
    4) Ukrainian potato pancakes (Deruny - Деруни)
    5) Chicken Kiev (котлета по-київськи - котлета по-киевски)
    6) Varenyky Ukrainian dessert dumplings (Вареники)

Chicken Kiev (котлета по-київськи) - Eating Ukrainian Food in Kyiv, Ukraine travel food video transcript:
Alright Mister Foodie it is time for dinner. When in Kiev there is one dish you have to get for sure that being Chicken Kiev (котлета по-київськи). Oh yeah. So we've ordered this and we've ordered a whole bunch of other different things and we're just waiting for it to come. And it is always that exciting moment because I'm hungry.
Yes, so the complimentary appetizer is basically brown bread and it comes with pork fat (salo - сало) and pickle. Alright. Pork fat and pickle. A one-biter.
Alright, so I too am kick-starting the evening with some Ukrainian vodka (Horilka - горілка).
So I thought this was butter but no this is a salty cheese and then I thought this was butter but no apparently it is pork fat (salo - сало) with like garlic and some chives.
The wine has arrived. The wine. The cool thing about this wine is that it is a Ukrainian wine. It is a dry red and I'm really excited to try this because I did get to try an Odessa dry red at a wine bar the other night.
Nice salty herring (маринована оселедець). Wow. That is a really smooth fish.
For something that is pickled it is surprisingly juicy too.
I ordered some potato pancakes (Deruny - Деруни). Yeah. Fried potato pancakes (Deruny - Деруни). We're going to add a little bit of sour cream there.
So the main has arrived. This is what you came here for. The star of the meal. Yeah. Yeah. Chicken Kiev (котлета по-київськи).
This is basically breaded chicken and inside sometimes it can be stuffed. Every restaurant has a different way of preparing it. Stuffed with some goodness. It looks buttery. Yeah, it usually has like butter inside.
Trying my first Chicken Kiev (котлета по-киевски) in Kyiv (Киев). Haha.
First Chicken Kiev (котлета по-київськи) in Kiev (Київ).
Dessert has arrived. We arrived. We ordered Varenyky (Вареники) which are these little dumplings and we got two kinds. So I know we ordered the cherry kind and the other one is kind of a surprise.
Well, it is time for price point. That was 560 in the local currency what is just under $22 US dollars at the moment. Really good value. $11 per person. We feasted. It was really good.
That was just an awesome Ukrainian meal (українські страви). We've been really enjoying Ukrainian food (українська кухня) here in Kiev (Київ) and we are leaving tomorrow so it is a little bit sad. So this is our officially our last dinner here in Kyiv (Киев).
This is part of our Travel in Ukraine video series showcasing Ukrainian food (українська кухня), Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian cuisine (українські страви).

Нескорений, Neither vodka nor "gorilka" but rather Horilka : with the root word of it being [ horil ] meaning to burn.
"Gorilka" is the way Russians say it.

If you're interested in Ukrainian cuisine you really should visit Lviv and, maybe, Odessa (night in train in any direction). There are many original places of interest at these cities, and Kiev residents themselves often travel to Lviv on weekends. :)

Can't help but chuckle. At 6:58, Audrey says, ''and a glass of wine, what else do you need''. Pause it at 7:00 whilst Audrey looks at her glass and in the background on the tv screen it say's ''I want to vomit''. I love little gifts from the universe like that :D.

Sour cream is like god of all souses in UA. You can it with anything: dumplings, salads, borch, pancakes, you can mix it with any jam, honey. You can add some oil and salt to get healthy equivalent of mayonnaise. And of course you can have cake "Smetannik" for desert.

Hey guys, what I like about your clips is that you got the Canadian vibe (i.e., being easy going, polite, not too aggressive or showy or feeling entitled); the reason I say this is coz I lived in Toronto for over nine years and for the last 17 yrs I am back in Tehran :)

    • @ARS-vs6kx
      @ARS-vs6kx 6 років тому

Honestly, I am not a foodie but for some strange reason I love food related UA-cam clips and food shows; that said for now I don't recommend you to come here coz although it's 100% safe, after all I have been back for the last 17 yrs and gone back to Canada for more than 5 times for a visit; the reason I say this is coz there are no diplomatic ties between Iran and Canada at the moment; on top of it, you can surely get a visa but you gotta go/be on a guided tour (i.e., some governmental official will be with you at all times); as someone who watches UA-cam more than 20hrs a week :) I guess I have too much time on my hand, I would recommend you both, should you have the time or money PLEASE cover some countries in Africa or South American, coz they are truly underrepresented on YouTude in terms of food, they are even barely covered by well-known food/travel UA-camrs like Mark Wiens or the guy from "Simply Dumpling".......I wish you both all the best and have a fabulous summer

fat-is salo?ok) but "fat" and "salo" and "bekon" and "smalets" is different things, smalets like butter but spread on bread made of salo, salo is served in slices made of pig,and the bacon is in composition closer to the subtree"pidcherevok" but with a large percentage of meat and is not served in such thin pieces.it's so difficult to explain, I imagine how difficult it is to look for these products on the market and explain it

Sour cream is very similar to Colombian "suero", maybe the diference is that sour takes more elaboration after prime material is done but I hope it tastes the same when I travel to Ukranie. With that I'll only be missing "patacones" "tajadas de maduro y verde" and "fritos" to feel just like home. Also some warm weather and a beach.

I am surprised that when you two were in the German and Austrian alps, you didn’t have pork fat (schmaltz) with different kinds of herbs. It always comes with the basket of breads. I even had it on a Polish restaurant in Brooklyn. It sounds unappetizing but actually it tastes very good. Schmaltz was easier to produce in the alps then butter.

Not sure if train from Kiev to Moldova. I took overnight train to Odessa (2nd class sleeper was only about $9 200-250 grivnas). Spent a few days in Odessa, then there is a train few days a week and a few Mashuka's everyday. Know one will speak English and you will likely go thru Transnistria. But I had no problems. You won't get a stamp in your passport. Get a Migration card, then they take it back when you exit around Bendry. When you cross into real Moldova, if they don't give you a card, then you must to to Migration office in cishinau to get one. I had no problems and went back later in the week to look around. Daily train and multiple Marshukas daily from Cishinau to Trisapol. Busses go to train station. Important to stop at migration window in station to get migration card, which will allow you 10 hours in Transistria. Then stop at exchange window. No credit cards excepted anywhere and no ATMs. You must chance US dollars or Euros for Transistrian rubles. Just don't get to much, can't exchange back anywhere out side of the country. But hey, you'll want to keep a few plastic tokens. Have fun. Be careful. (Technically is US citizen state department advises against going there. As they are not recognized the US has no diplomatic relations)

Hey same here ;) I've always been drawn more towards countries belonging to the former Soviet bloc, basically European countries off the beaten path for most people in my country. I've visited Poland (twice), Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Hungary & I'll be visiting Russia at the end of the year. For some reason France hasn't really been at the top of my bucket list. I've visited the UK (England & Scotland), Switzerland & Finland before as well, sure they are nice countries to visit but I do prefer exotic European countries that have preserved more of their own distinct culture and uniqueness, rather than the global metropolis, big cities like Paris or London where it is a medley of people from all around the world.
I'll definitely visit Ukraine again in the future, as I've only been to Kyiv the last time. The other cities like Lviv, Odesa and the Carpathian Mountains are definitely still quite high on my bucket list

Bailey20, If you do go to Ukraine, remember that the term "the Ukraine" apart from being grammatically incorrect is also offensive for Ukrainians, for Ukraine is no longer a Russian colony.

I think the more appropriate name is pork lard, not pork fat. Either way it's not as bad as some make it sound. It's actually quite delicious especially when there are layers of meat (kinda like bacon)

Their few different cuts of Salo ( pork fat/ pork belly or pork lard as you said....its all means the same....fat from the belly part of the pig). Their is Salo cut with just fat and skin part, then with half fat and half meat (yep, like bacon ). My favorite was with half fat and half meat fried with potatoes or eggs.

My business trip to Kyiv is approaching fast! :)). I was wondering if you noticed if in restaurants they use pasteurized milk? And if the fresh fruit juices are safe? And lastly tap water? I see conflicting information about it online.. I won’t drink it but can I brush my teeth with it? And eat fruits washed with it? Sorry for all the ?? I was really sick in the Dominican Republic once and have been a little paranoid since! Haha!! Thank you and keep up the good work!! Can’t wait for your Granada vidéo! :)

Pork fat could be a lard too. Also pork belly sounds so much better and used in gastronomy . I would say a salt cured pork belly.
