- Here is a great demo on how to get on HF ham radio using a very small antenna and making contacts. Rodger was able to talk to several locations around the world. A must see video. This video was taken at NX0P's location near Glenville and Albert Lea, Minnesota.

I've used two of the hamsticks in a dipole configuration. Right now I'm using my 25' "flag pole" and having a lot of luck with 40- 10 meters with several ground radials. thanks for the video, Greg.

I just got a used yeasu 757gx, if I setup a dipole arbitrarily without a tuner, say 20,30,40' just to try to make some of my first contacts, will it burn it out? Thanks

Congrats on the antenna, however it's all about the solar cycle and where you are in it... 20 years ago, I remember to make a DX to Australia (I was in Portugal) using a 15cm portable antenna and 5 watts of power. Among thousands of contacts... that one I will remember forever ;) enjoy DXing de CT1HZU

Hey guys. I'll try to answer a couple of the questions. I buy the attennas through MFJ Enterprizes. The part number for the 20 meter antenna is MFJ-1620T and I also had to buy the adapter MFJ-7707 because I had a NMO mount on the plate. The plate is just a piece of 12 guage metal about 10 inches square. I added three ground radials. I cut them at different lengths to cover the whole band. 16' 6.4" - 16' 5.0" - 16' 3.7" We were also running 100 watts. We did not play with the vhf/uhf contest. And yes the pizza and beer was good!
It actually looks like the MFJ-2320T which is the mini ham stick that is only a little over 2 feet tall. The 1620T is around 4 feet tall without the whip. Either way, it's a very successful setup.

I did something similar on 40m and 75m using ProAm? mobile whips. Unlike the Hamstick brand, the stinger could be fully retracted for storage. I think MFJ sells similar antennas. It worked much better than expected. I did roll my own matching coil at the base to get a better impedance match and used quick disconnect mounts to change pre-tuned antennas quickly. I should try this with my ATAS-120.
I used the pricey Cushcraft MA6V OCFD for 6-20 meters-no radials required. For a limited space antenna it exceeded my expectations.
Thanks for sharing this video. I have a transceiver & was looking to sell it on as I don't want to invest in getting an expensive antenna necessary to make contacts. But looking at this might change my mind. I will have to get a HAM license first but seeing this video will give me more incentive. 73s!
+mutezone For sure, you really can get by with a lot less of an antenna system than you might think, just get a wire outside in the clear or up in the attic and you will be surprised. Might not be the strongest signal on the band but you will make contacts and have fun!

This antenna looks like a winner!! Small enough for a portable application, yet strong enough for a good signal. Although I only listen, I've been looking for something that isn't a simple long wire antenna. I run an SDR Play RSP2pro, and have been looking for an antenna I can use with my Travel trailer when I go camping. I would be interested to find out the number of radials and the length to get this type of reception.
Nice to see a "simple" rig getting the job done. Now, to form the capacitors on all my old "boat anchors".

Any chance nearby resonant antennas are passively assisting this situation. Are the driven elements of nearby HF antennas earthed?
I've got one of those and they do work great.
Seems like a hamstick on 20M is not all that much of a compromise. A full quarter wave is only like 16' so the hamstick should be pretty efficient if sufficient radials are provided. Probably have less success on 80M with a hamstick - though I have made 80M contacts from my mobile in the past. Nevertheless, you give hope to those who are stuck in HOA hell. Hard for the HOA nazis to complain about something they never see. Keep up the good work!

Agreeing with Radio Wild's comment. I've done quite a bit of testing with radials of different lengths and quantities. For many locations, I'm not sure that 3 or 4 of that length will provide that performance. I'm guessing that you are benefiting from good ground conduction. But glad to see it work! 73's K7NXT
William, I would love to see your radial length findings. I have begun to acquire 1 Ham Stick for each band. The Ham Stick is 1/2 of a dipole right? For a 20M Ham Stick you should need 1 radial about 33'3" in length right? 73 de K5CCG

The counterpoise is like half a dipole. If you removed the full sized counterpoise the efficiency will go way down. If you live in a condo or apartment wihtout a yard and can run a long wire for a counterpoise, the magnetic loop santenna is about the only truly efficient smal antenna (without requiring a counterpoise0.

Dipole are my favorite. Are you talking 2 wires coming of an insulator of some lknd ad tuned to 11 meters? It was always a quick thing to make if my rooftop antenna blew down. And It was always horizontal in my attic. The people in town said I had an real week signal strength. But the people in other countries said I was blowing smoke .LOL
Did your antenna need any tuning for this?

I'd like to make contact with you, I think we might be a bit too close for HF, maybe. So I'll have to cross my fingers for next year during a tropo opening. I'm up in NW Iowa about 60 miles east of Sioux City.
I have talked DX on an even smaller antenna on 11 meters. My wife talked to a fell in Georgia once he was sitting on his doorstep using a walkie talkie.

It proves the adage that "Any antenna is better then no antenna". When the conditions are there you don't need big antennas and when the conditions aren't there big antennas don't make much difference anyhow. A Hamstick is still pretty efficient on 20m. If this is all a ham can manage put one up and GET ON THE AIR!

the plate plays a key role in this antenna config. its acts like a aircapacitor around the radiator and helps in tuning to the required frequency + capacitance you get from each radial.... its all about L & C ;)

One question I have is this: the setup shows an MFJ tuner on top of the rig, next to the speaker. I noticed only one cable going into the tuner, but none coming out. Was that tuner even online, or is that some other type of equipment?

That was just an SWR/power/field strength meter but we were just playing around with it as a field strength meter, it has that function also, so just the center pin of a short piece of coax was hooked up since it was handy so the meter would move with our transmitted signal. It was really not part of the system, just for fun to play around with.

how long are the radials?
+Larry Hromowyk They are a quarter wave length long, so on this band they were about 33 feet long I guess it would be for 20 meter band.

There is nothing amazing about this. You have a minimal antenna that is capable of working the strongest signals on the band. There are many more signals there to be worked, if you had more antenna with which to do it.

try this on 160..... lol
You can easily load up an aluminum tube... Say a cb stationmaster with a coil and have a wire running down to the feed point at the roof (if your house has a corrugated iron roof) using it as the ground. Such an arrangement works smashing on 160m. I know as I recently did similar to make an 8 meter high vertical for an experiment on 1640 khz (the antennas resonant frequency). I ran only a 50mW carrier in and still had a strong signal to a transistor radio at 300 meters distance.
I didn't actually use a cb base station antenna for the experiment however. That was an example. I used an aluminum tube top section the same length as a 27mhz half wave with a coil connected to it with taps to adjust the resonant frequency

The fact is it's actually the contesters who subsidise the whole hobby. Contestants are solely responsible for the vast evolutions in ham radio technology. Radios like the K3 and Flex are the direct result of contesters demanding better performance. If it was up to the rag chewers we'd all still be using radios that drifted 200hz during every transmission and with less than 60db of blocking dynamic range.
