Hello operators.
Todays we are discussing my favorite configuration for the Super Antenna MP1, portable ham radio antenna. The mp1 is a portable quarter wave vertical antenna, which is lightweight, and has a small breakdown size. It can be deployed in many different configurations but for this video, we are mostly interested in its "no antenna tuner required" attributes.

I've been using a motor driven screwdriver antenna for a while now. I spend most of my time on 40 meters and 80 meters. Granted, I have also noticed that with a longer whip (102"), I do not need to expose as many coil turns as I do with a shorter one (66"). Have I noticed all that much of a difference in signal reports. Well, it really depends on conditions on the day in question. I operate on certain low band nets regularly with members spread out over the South West USA. Some days are better than others. My overall best operating scenario was when I put up a clandestine end fed long wire. But since I live in an apartment i had to take it down before the sun began to shine and before anyone could see it. At the same time I should add that just a few years ago, I could load up the proverbial mattress spring and operate without any issues. These days, there are folks with 100 foot towers and beams who shut the radio off in complete disgust and instead spend the evening watching television. I believe that the things we are learning now--with propagation conditions in such a poor state--will be lessons learned for the rest of our lives. Without question, the time that one spends to be heard in conditions such as these while operating QRP will pay dividends. Don't ever give up--just keep on experimenting and going forward!

I also have an MP-1. When I replaced the stock whip with the Buddipole long whip, I needed about half the coil loading for 40 meters and had well below 2:1 SWR across the entire band. I was able to reach up and down most of the mid-Atlantic (US) with just a single counterpoise (wrapped around because I have a "postage stamp" back yard). I look forward to taking it out in the field where I can stretch everything out. So far, I seem to have better performance on mine with the spike mount over the clamp mount. 73.
I can verify your findings David. The spike performance, is definitely better than the clamp. And if you can get more counterpoise wires attached, you'll see an even better Improvement. Thanks for the comment, and the feedback. It's very much appreciated.
My idea of a counterpoise is clamping the antenna to a great piece of metal. I had one of those old B&W AP-10 apartment antennas. I clamped it onto a metal railing of 2nd story balcony. Ran a Ten-Tec Century 21 at 35W CW into it from Massachusetts. Worked Japan from over Europe & Asia. While in Hawaii, I had my Hustler 5BTV mounted on a post on a chainlink fence. Worked the world that way.

The MP1 is a great antenna. I have used a wire in lieu of a whip to good effect in the past . I have been working on a kulikov whip for it. At low height lots of radials helped me tremendously - I used ribbon cable to add surface area. IIRC elevating the antenna feedoint. to greater than 8' lowers ground losses considerably. Thanks for sharing !

@@OH8STN I am an over achiever The most I used at once was 24 cut for 40 and it was a good 1 s-unit increase. Honestly I have not found the need to have shorter than 40m counterpoises at close to ground level. You can use all kinds of cool multiconductor wire for counter poises too. brush it out at the ends like roots of a tree.
I'll give this a try Brett. I think your counterpoise setup with my longer whip might take the Super Antenna to a new level.

I get great performance out of my MP-1, but I have indeed found that for 40 meters (with the standard slider) I can’t extend the sleeve long enough to achieve resonance on the band. For 30 meters or below it’s great - though it does need to be extended farther than the tuning card would suggest.
I do use an SWR meter to ensure that I’ve got the lowest SWR in the center of the desired band.
I use both the titanium whip and the standard telescoping whip, with the standard counterpoise wires. I mount the antenna to a lightweight Amazon Basics 60” camera tripod, with a sandbag hanging from the tripod’s hook to weigh it down (VERY IMPORTANT to avoid the tripod tipping over); up until now I’ve only been testing it in my back yard - it will be great for portable ops/SOTA activations.
I like that antenna setup especially for portable operation. I’m using an EFHW antenna in my attic, due to HOA restrictions, with my G90 and have gotten good results so far. Planning more antenna builds for HF and SATCOM usage and enjoy seeing the content of what people are using. Thanks for the information. 73
I remember using the 80m coil once with the MP1 at night and making a contact 1000 miles away, I was impressed, shame there isn't a remote function for the MP1, some kind of wireless remote would be amazing.
I have had great success with the MP1 and supplied radials. I've even clamped it to the gate of a field and made loads of contacts when it was too windy to use the tripod.
What's really remarkable about the MP1 is it's break down size is incredibly small, you could easily fit it in a small bag and take it on a bicycle with a small QRP rig such as the Xiegu X5105, Kx2 etc.
I haven't used it in a while but I intend to soon.
I had one for a while that I used with my IC-7200 for JT-65 years back. With homemade radials it was slaying it on 10 meters back in 2014 when I was super active.
Thanks for another fine video, Julian. I appreciate you pointing out the way the band-changing function is superior to that of the (much less expensive) Wolf River Coils implementation. In response to your question about what we're using, For portable use, I'm experimenting with the QRPguys tri-band vertical, Pacific Antenna 20 & 40 m trapped vertical, the KX2 recommended 25' radiator and 25' counterpoint, and a QRPguys DS1 40-10 meter vertical. At home I use a Hustler 6BTV.
Great video. I use the same configuration for doing parks on the air and I built a Lifepo4 battery similar to what you built. Looks like I will need to add the Chameleon MIL WHIP 2.0 to my setup. Thanks for posting your videos they are great for those of us that are new to Amateur Radio.

I also use the MFJ telescopic whip 12 foot on top of the slider coil, collapses down to 2 foot, have to be careful of any wind and SA mobile recommendation is that it can be used but not whilst actually moving probably due to the stress on the coil from windage.
I’m using a super antenna MP1 as is currently, and it’s a get bit of kit. Got a longer (5m long) whip on the way, which I’m hoping will really boost the performance of the antenna.
It's a great antenna! Three ways to improve performance.
1. More 1/4 wave counterpoise wires eg 3x, 6x, 9x, ... for each band you're using.
2. Add longer vertical element (reduces loading).
3. Get it higher in the air.
Performance will suffer if only using the coax as a counterpoise.

This is the only one of your you pieces of advice that I took and it did not work out well. I was never able to make contacts on the stock configuration of the MP1DXMAX on Field Day last year. I never added additional counterpoises other than the ones provided in the kit so that might have been the issue. I sold my MP1, licked my wounds from the purchase and went in on your other recommendation, the Chameleon MPAS 2.0. It worked right out of the bag and I have not looked back. The only thing I purchased from Superantenna is their universal mount which I still use.
We have to go with what works for us. I've had good results with both, but not without experimentation. The additional counterpoise wires will improve any configuration.

Hello and thanks for sharing this video. I absolutely agree that installing a foldable antenna on top makes much more sense. I also do it that way.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes I presented the idea of the folding antenna to Super Antenna over a year ago. I had the impression they would release their own but have not seen one yet. I prefer the folding whip because it packs smaller and is much longer than the titainium whip. It also doesn't have that stored spring tension which can easily put out an eye.
Anyway, it is nice to mix and match the best from all around.

Julian, tnx for the input to change the MP-1 radiator. For vertical antenna op I use a Slidewinder-DX coil (from M0ECC) and the same foldable mil whip. The principle is really the same. 73 de oe7ftj
Yes agreed. The M0ECC is a 3d printed copy of the Wolf River coil, which is a loose copy of the MP1. All great concepts for shortened 1/4w verts. The MIL seems to be the best collapsible whip at the moment.

Outstanding video! I dig my Super Antenna MP1. Looking at getting another MP1 to make a dipole. Like the idea of adding the longer whip. Keep up the great work!
WJ6F ...You’d be better off with the vertical.How high can you get that dipole above ground level to be effective will be your biggest hurdle to clear.

I use the original Super Antenna with either the newer titanium whip or a 155" Easton aluminum shock corded tent pole with a quick connect 3/8" x 24 threaded coupler. Works great. I have all the ground radial kits that were available and the clamp. Also use the Super Antenna on my SG-2020 backpack frame. See it here on UA-cam under my callsign, K5TED. It's a 360 video so you have to spin me into view.

Julian, thanks for this vid. I always learn so much from you! This vid is timely, as I'm currently wrestling with an antenna to use for JS8 and PSK31 portable. Your expertise in working these digital modes and the antenna systems you deploy is what keeps me coming back. So, here's the question... since I know you also have Chameleon's mag loops with power compensator, ... how do you choose which to deploy... the mag loop or this Super Antenna MP1 hybrid? For my considerations, it's a matter of performance (interested bands for me would be 20m, 30m, and 40m)... cost....and ease of setup/take down.
One comment, I setup the same frankentenna but with the Mp1 stake. Ended up having to make more radials and once I did I got a great match on 40m.
That day with the IC705 my longest contact was 385 Miles with 10w SSB.

This antenna kept me sane in the lock down I actually clamped to the arm bracket on my apartment window like the collapsible whip selection I have the standard telescopic whip also G clamp to picnic tables but also have bought a disco lighting tripod to stand it on I find the standard tripod is useless in long grass tends to flip over when the coax is fitted keep up the good work M0YCQ

Ive been using a very similar setup for some time now, but with the addition of a second MP1c in place of the counterpoise wires (a suggestion from OH8STN) and I agree that it makes a perfect portable but also easy to deploy antenna system.
I also use that configuration sometimes Mark. I like it very much.
This is interesting; I’d like to learn more about this. The radials/counterpoise wires are annoying to set up.
I added a hustler quick disconnect adapter at base so i could quickly lower antenna to make adjustments to the coil, much faster then unscrewing it when its out of reach.. Significantly better gain when the counter poise is raised above ground a few feet vs laying it on ground.
Im using the Wolf River Coil with the standard radials. But i did also get the extra colars so i could quickly change bands. Specifically for 80, 40 and 20. Like the vid. Thanks. 73. KK4BK
As i'm mulling over the best portable antenna configuration for my manpack, the timing of this video is super helpful. Currently going round in circles regarding cost v's weight/portability, bands & resonantcy (??) considerations. I am bizarely wondering if an Atas-120 could work portably as would also give me 2m/70cm capability in addition to HF to 40m ? Bonus there would be using the same antenna for vehicle mobile and portable if desired. More ideas now to factor in 😎👍. Awesome job as ever. Thank you Julian.
The MP1 also enables 70cm/2m operations.

I’ve actually not yet tried it. I don’t use it with my vhf/uhf radios. Simply saw it in the manual.

I can already tell you, you're going to have a blast for sure. In my previous video how to ham radio off grid, I used g90. The low receive current and built-in antenna tuner make it a really fun radio for an end fed.

The MP1 is a great antenna. It's easy to deploy, and I find that I am able to transmit/receive easily on 20 m and 40 m. I haven't worked much with other bands .... but I will. 73. KI5KET

Excellent video and good information about the Super Antenna. I've been using a Chameleon Antenna for a couple of years and have always liked that it's so very versatile allowing for both vertical and wire configurations. However it does need a tuner. I must admit that the Super Antenna is attractive because of the tuner-less multi-band capabilities and ease of deployment. I suppose that to have the option of using a wire for NVIS one could also carry a Packtenna or something similar. along with a portable mast. As the old saying goes, there's a solution to every problem, all that's required is a little imagination.
It is a great antenna but rather costly. I have reliably used a Wolf River Coils Silver Bullet antenna TIA while operating field portable. I enjoy your videos Julian, keep up the good work! 73, de KX4EZ
Awesome off the grid setup. From the bicycle, to the solar power supply. And that antenna is amazing. Speaking of adding more Counterpoise antenna wires. How well would that work for a standard HT? (People usually have the 1 wire, counterpoise, to create a dipole antenna.

I have the Super Antenna MP1 as well. Your collapsible whip looks very much like a military AT-271 A/PRC? That antenna used to be used for the PRC-77 series and others. Thanks for the excellent content!
Like a manual tarheel antenna. With the antenna whip used it would make a great antenna for scouts to use on a trip.
I am about to make a 5 band folded fan dipole, an old morgain design. But this antenna intrigues me, I may have to try this.

I'm guessing the blue water is salt water so one elevated ground plane out toward the water will work wonders for a vertical. Same for an elevated counterpoise below a horizontal, etc.
Reflecting the signal has always saved the day when I'm portable, plus it requires less output power to make contacts. That's been my experience any way.

Yes the MP1 requires 1/4w radisls for each band. They should have been included in the package.
This looks like the antenna I use with a 24 inch base rod, a wolf river coil, and at-271 whip but with different parts. I found the Wolfriver coil loading up better than my other coils. The MFJ coli seems t work better but its more fragile
Second that. Wolf River and similar extensions half the price if not less and perform as well or better. Some of these antenna setups are more for bragging rights than anything else. Both the mp1 and chameleon are cashing in on the herd. "But dude Its titanium"
I am sorry but I failed to hear what whip is above the coil. Would you please identify the manufacturer and model of the whip. I also heard, with my old age ears, that you had to use the coil adjustment differently from the supplied adjustment card. I was impressed with the performance of this current modification that you have made. I am going to piece out my purchase, so is there any point to purchase the supplied whip in the kit version of this antenna? Thank you for your help in advance. The MP1 kit version is nice, but sometimes a whip with smaller breakdown size is preferred. Super Antenna doesn't currently offer that option so I looked at the MIL whip from chameleon. That's what was used in this video.
Julian, have you tried the MC-705 by Chelegance? I'm curious about your impression if you have one. I own the MP1 but find tuning it more challenging than the MC-750. Also, can you share how you tune the MP1 on 40m with the extended whip on top? This configuration renders the configuration card that ships with the antenna inaccurate. So, I'm curious about your method for efficient and effective tuning.
On the motor bike: Does it charge your LFePO4 battery every time the antenna tip hits a powerline 😂? I know its only 2.2 meters tall - but the perspective on your video makes it look close to those cables

Nice video. I do have a question Julian, you mentioned when using the longer whip you used less of the coil than with the standard whip or titanium whip. I use the FG1 SWR ruler with those items, did you create new ruler settings for the longer whip? Thanks and 73 Steve KB3JC
Hello Steve. Actually I forgot to mention this in the video. I don't use the frequency guide with this configuration. I use my micro SWR meter, carried with my go kit.

You're not ignorant! I was doing a phased vertical test with two super antennas trying to get some directivity towards North America.

Hey Julian...seriously considering adding the MP-1 to IC-705/7300 kit for hi-speed, simple, portable deployment...I suspect your kit is still of solid value to you?
Definitely. For my radios without a tuner, the mp1 is my number one choice. The only thing I've done differently, is added a collapsible whip instead of the titanium whip which comes with the kit.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us, I have the super antenna system, and, I am wanting to add the folding whip. How can I figure out what the length of the exposed coil should be using the new taller folding antenna, what you are saying makes so much sense, but how do I figure it out. The little plastic gauge the supply with the kit, isn't going to be right, like you said, you will need less coil showing for th given frequency, is there a ratio or a formula a guy can try who does not have a tone of extra equipment, or antenna tuner to use to get in the ball park.

First of all, thanks for the kindness. As far as getting the right measurement on the coil, you'll have to test it with either a handheld antenna analyzer, or antenna analyzer built into your radio. If using your radio, do that using very low power. Once I found the right points on the slider for 40, 30, 20, I marked those spots with a Sharpie marker on the plastic between the coil turns, where I had best swr on that band. This way you have a visual reference of each band directly on the coil. The awesome thing about doing it this way as you only have to do it once, and you don't have to remember to take the frequency guide with you whenever you operate.
Another great video Julian, I love the portability and the flexibility of the antenna but I do wonder how efficient it is in comparison to a full size 1/4 wave? Have you done a comparison or know of one? On the lower bands the vertical element is a fraction of full size as well as total radial length being way less than than ideal. I understand why people use it and it has its place. I suppose in a nutshell if you were in a real life emergency situation, would a full size 1/4 wave antenna make the critical communication where the MP1 may not? Don't freak out Barry. 👍 What we're doing here has little to do with the exam. The exam make sure you understand how not to hurt yourself and where you should operate. The types of things we're doing in this video are the practical things we begin to think about in the field. Don't take stress, just do one thing at a time :-)
New ham here. I just unboxed and set up the MP1. What happens if I leave off the radials/groundplane/counterpoise wires?
It won't be as efficient and it won't tune up according to the tuning guide. In theory you can use the mp1 without the radials if you have a long enough coax cable. It won't work very well though. Definitely use the radials for the most efficient setup
I realize this is 3 years old now, but I just came across it. I'm looking to duplicate parts of your setup, but I noticed something and had some questions
I see in parts of the video, both poles for the MP1 (base to coil) are used, whereas in others only 1 was used. Did you find one configuration better than the other? I also wanted to know if the measurement tool Superantenna includes (for the coil) was still useful with your modification. Thanks!
When you use 2 poles under the coil, cour antenna can develop more current, helping efficiency. Sometimes a more portable setup is desired, so a single pole will do.
Naturally the frequency guide from super Antenna won't ve precise anymore. Just tune the slider for a highest noise on the frequency, and you'll be close.

The whip is from chameleon, it's called the MIL WHIP 2.0. The rails are 3D printed from thingiverse. 👍
Julian, love your videos. They are chock full of great information! I’m a novice at all of this, and I’m trying to setup a Raspberry Pi. Your videos are a great help! Just a question, as I’m looking at this setup, I noticed a yellow coil or choke between the radio and the antenna. Could you let us know what that is.
Have you had any trouble with corrosion between your Super Antenna and Chameleon Antenna whip? I read that aluminum and brass will corrode when put together.
None at all. On the chameleon I use non conductive anti seize compound between dissimilar metals. The super antenna is and titanium so there's no problem there. If you're worried though, just use a little bit of that non-conductive anti-seize compound. It's in the chameleon user manual 👍

I have a question on how your checking the tuning on the antenna. I see you hooking up a Tee connector on the back of the radio. Are you temporarily hooking up the minivna via coax and un-connecting the coax and leaving the connector open or putting a cap on it? Yeah, setting up next to the water doesn’t hurt. The MP1C isn’t nearly that effective otherwise. I haven’t set up my sectional whip on top of my MP1C, but I’m willing to give it a shot.
Counterpoise is key. More is better.

Is this a Chameleon clamp (CHA-UCM) you're using on the table?
I've just tried to use a brand new one today, and as soon as I start to tighten it (to a wooden table)... it starts to bend!!!...
I've emailed Chameleon and their reply is... I'm using it wrong!
I'm really feeling stupid, as there's only one thing the clamp does: tighten or loosen...
And I assure you I'm not forcing anything, as soon as I do half a turn of the knob, you literally see the frame bend outwards...
How many turns do you tighten yours?...
Apologies for the random questions but I know I don't have super-strength, so I'm at a loss here.
Plus, at £99.00 ($125.00) a piece, I'm rather unimpressed by the poor quality of the "military-approved aluminium" ...

You can choose the best one for your setup. In this vid the shorter MIL whip was used, rather than the telescopic whip. The table mount also comes from the @chameleonantenna website.

Hi. I am set up to an Icom 7300 with internal tuner. A useable swr can only be had on 10 meters??
Counterpoise wire are out. Flexible whip in place. Wire were on my deck and then out on the lawn, no change.
I am at a lose. Any help is appreciated.

Curious how this hybrid compares with the MPAS 2.0 using stock configuration with the mil whip extension? That is, how much does the extra length using the mil whip extension compensate for the inefficiency, compared with the MP1 hybrid , which is shorter but more efficient? Again, another great vid.
Excellent question, one which I've been waiting for someone to bring up. I think comparative testing could answer this question, most interesting for me would be a test to measure the performance on 20, 30 & 40M.

@@OH8STN, I do enjoy how you break down your systems for different operating conditions. I think showing how the different components come together based on the given operating scenario. 1) here are all the parts a-g; 2) I use parts a,b,c for this setup, and parts a,b, f for this setup.
Let's see what I can come up with. It might be better served in a video rather than a blog post. But I promise, one or the other.

I'm a fulltime RVer and use an MP1 with my 891. My MP1 is used without mods and I've had great success with it. I'd like to try the mods you shared in the video and eliminate my tuner. I'm assuming that the included band adjustment scale is no longer used with your mods. Did you need an analyzer to adjust the coil? Thanks, 73 - K6SPA
Yes that's right the FG is out of adjustment, so I used a hand analyser to tune up. It's really excellent hearing how others use the mp1. Thanks for watching.
