@@weinerdisc8099 - Couldn’t agree more. I kinda think there shouldn’t be a “house” in sport. Like sure, sports teams and leagues can be profitable and are enormous assets sometimes, but it feels like the notion of “sport” itself and its value is being lost when people’s defense of NASCAR (in this instance) is that it’s privately owned and they can do what they want. A sport’s sanctioning body shouldn’t be motivated by profit, per se, but to advance the sport itself and from that creating profit. It’s absurd to me that NASCAR’s core mission these days, aside from enriching its owners and controlling every part possible of “stock car racing,” is to create an “entertaining racing product.” Sport is inherently entertaining and has organically created so many amazing moments and stories. NASCAR should be fully focused on ensuring that their sport is fair. After that, that it can reach as many people who want to both participate in and observe it. Finally, profits should be used to promote the sport, to compensate those who give so much to it, and to protect the sanctity of sport itself, here Motorsport, by creating and keeping “the playing field” level.

Not because the people are distracted from goings on, but because it allows them to focus on something that isn't a hazard to their wellbeing. The problem is the wealthy continually need new eras to exploit, and now they're exploiting the shields that have kept them from public focus. The France family became filled with hubris thinking it was their Wheeling and dealing business acumen that built the success. They then proceeded to overexpose and oversaturate the market with NASCAR everything. It was inevitable that it would all flame out. It was never built for sustainable success. They don't even know how to do that. Let's add in the fact that the cars are shit and and the oval racing is a drag. They never tried to bring young people into the fold and now that they realize what their demographics are looking like it's too late. Everything's gimmick where they're just throwing shit against the wall at this point

7:44 another side note about why this is a bad bad thing, is that Fanatics/Nascar Authentics/"Action" etc all have stuff like the Nascar die-cast scale model cars produced exclusively through Lionel, instead of the different merch companies buying and producing their own models. Everyone knows that is an expensive process, but because that is now consolidated and monopolized by Nascar, there is no incentive to make high quality models like what used to exist. And worse yet, THEY decided what cars get produced rather than the teams. A lot of really cool looking cars never get produced because they don't think they will be "profitable" enough. 🖕

Fanatics is one of the worst things to happen to official merch. The quality issue is the same with other sports because they'll negotiate a deal with a jersey/uniform company and then produce the uniforms at lower cost because of lower quality. If anyone remembers the issue with the see-through pants in baseball this year, that was because of Fanatics. NBA and NFL jerseys being ripped on the field? Fanatics. And if you go to the official merch store of teams you just get a slightly customized Fanatics store page. And because they have deals with every major sport to be the "exclusive supplier", that means they can do whatever they want with quality.
Oh look, one company going and taking all the money in a business and seizing all the power and making things go downhill. Damn, no wonder why Jim France and NASCAR like them.

As much as I cheer against him on the track for his villian role, there's no coincidence in my mind that the weekend after Denny Hamlin didn't sign, his performance took a nosedive at every track following not signing the charters. There's no way that a triple Daytona 500 winner in top tier equipment couldn't pass on a superspeedway and a top 25 driver of all time started to immediately take hits in performance following the charter disagreement. I'd argue they'll be like MAJORITY of team owners. NASCAR demanding a signature like it did reeks of a bad deal for the teams. The merchandise is probably the worst (if you're MJ or Larson) but

As I understand it, the France family has even been angling to field their own race teams using the unissued charters reserved at the beginning for new teams. Like damn!
Edit - it’d be like the owner of the Yankees also being the commissioner of baseball in a lifetime, hereditary role with the finances of “baseball” itself tied to his own. More, that the commissioner also owns something like half the teams (not a perfect analogy, but using teams as analogues for tracks) and can also call “balls and strikes” from the owner’s box. Is just dumb boomer oversimplification of every problem, in most cases it's never that simple, while it's simple in itself to stop watching NASCAR because it's no longer enjoyable, it's not that simple how it got so bad and to me it got really really bad really really fast, sure stages and playoffs were dumb but usually at least the racing was pretty good, now more often than not races are either really boring or devolve into a shit show or NASCAR makes terrible officiating calls in the name of entertainment.

Enjoy the video, a lot of great information.
One thing about the pre-2001 tv deal. Many people think it was difficult to keep up with races on different channels each weekend. It really wasn't. All the channels were on your cable or satellite provider. You had 40-50 channels tops and if you knew which of the six networks carried races that year, you had six channels to look for. Next year, you may need three or four different apps/subscriptions to catch all the racing, just more money in someone else's pockets.
At the end of the day as you stated, teams come and go, money changes hands and the cycle starts over.
Lastly, with fewer races on network tv in the past, fewer races got bumped off the air if an overrun happened. On the cable stations, an Andy Griffith rerun, a lot rolling tournament or some other odd show was preempted. Today, it gets bumped off the network to a secondary station that maybe not everyone has. The tv situation could be much better.

Regarding the bit at 12:55, Nascar also owns IMSA, and actually does field their own team there. You might know them as Action Express racing, who field the number 31 whelen car most notably with Pipo Derani. They've won 6 championships in their class, although as we've seen despite being ran by the same person, IMSA is ran much tighter compared to Nascar. Should Nascar revoke the 23XI and FRM charters we'll probably see an expansion of Action Express into Nascar, don't know who'd drive for them (Ben Kennedy returns?), but knowing how much nascar loves to manipulate races nowadays I can't imagine they'd do any worse than be borderline playoff contenders. Anything to push the agenda

IMSA's already fucked up if you look close enough, between the never-ending plague of late-race restarts and Dan Binks's offhand comments about not even being able to drill a hole in a C7.R unless it was on the FIA paperwork. The days of taking an old Firebird, throwing all the go-fast bits at it that the rules will let you get away with, buying a small stack of old racing tires and bringing a bunch of beer buddies to the Rolex 24 are gone too.
The one good thing about IMSA is that there's so much car variety that things can still look, for all the world, as though they're A-OK.

I miss old NASCAR and I think alot of fans will agree with me. Ever since NASCAR blew up in popularity it has made some questionable decisions and ever since 2003 NASCAR has gone downhill from the car development, new gens sucking the first year to two, injuries are now becoming a thing, the sport becoming so expensive that drivers with real talent aren't going towards NASCAR, bad officiating becoming a common occurrence, abandoning legacy tracks and replacing them with terrible tracks, etc. NASCAR is just trying to kill itself at this point and soon one of those bullets will hit some serious and NASCAR will go down the drain. There needs to be a big change in the leadership in NASCAR or else it could die. I mean just look at all the defunct sports/motorsports leagues some were doing really well and made bad decisions and went bankrupt. Everything has a beginning and an end and NASCAR isn't exempt from this. Obviously this will take a along time to happen but with each year and each bad decision it's really becoming a possibility. I mean remember when NASCAR was thinking about replacing Cup Cars with full electric cars. I just hope NASCAR gets it together.

As an Indycar fan in addition to NASCAR, it is absolutely stupid & mind boggling that Indycar has followed NASCAR in adopting the charter system for 2025 onwards especially considering the fact Roger Penske has seen firsthand what the charter system has done in NASCAR. In my view a lot of the problems that are associated with the charter system in NASCAR will be 100 times worse in the Indycar charter system considering the fact that it is more expensive to operate an Indycar team than a NASCAR one. Indycar says that the charter system will grow /sustain the sport when I actually think it will have the opposite effect because teams like Prema (who are joining Indycar next year) are basically banned from the shared revenue that is split among the teams in Indycar for the first 3 years they are a team & they are not guaranteed a spot on the grid & have to qualify for each race. However Prema had to agree to these terms to even be allowed to enter Indycar for next season. The only good thing to come out of the charter system in Indycar is that the traditional qualifying format for the Indy 500 (aka Bump Day) will remain for now though I would expect the big teams like Ganassi, Penske & Andretti to push for all of their entries into that race (not just the chartered ones) to be guaranteed a spot, making it even harder for the smaller teams & the teams that only do the Indy 500 to get in.
